View Full Version : China Open 2007 : Random news from the arena.

since i am here in the Tian He Stadium, i will post some regular news and tidbits from what's happening around here. i won't be posting results as you can get those from other news sources as well as tournamentsoftware.com

- anyway, last night during the BC server crash, i was actually at dinner. apologies about the crash. the server ran out of disk space and then choked on itself. Murphy law dictates that it have to happen during a big tournament. i have cleared up a lot of junk and now it is up and running again.

- oh about the dinner... HuangKwokHau and I had dinner with Hendrawan and SDK at a Chinese restaurant. Hendrawan and SDK are both very friendly. Hendrawan's English is pretty good! SDK surprising didn't eat that much, i thought he would need to eat more as he will be burning a lot of energy.

- the audience turn out is pretty good for a weekday, i am surprise how many people are there. i think maybe 40% occupied during the day, and 60+% during the evening. that's not bad for 2nd round. i wonder how many people took vacation days to come watch??

there are a lot of MAS supporters among the crowd, people cheer when LCW was announced. and of course a lot of cheers for Chinese player. the crowd was really cheering for the Xie/Guo vs. Hendra/Joko match. i can't wait for even more thundering atmosphere during the final.

- sitting down and kneeling down on the floor whole day to take photos is getting quite tiring. i should've brought more comfortable shoes.

- i always have this warm fussy and surreal feeling when i come to a tournament like this and be able to see these international players. we talk and chat about them everyday here in BC but to be able to stand among them is like a dream come true. i walked passed Zhu Lin right after her match against Zhou Mi. i was able to hear her huffing and puffing like she just finished a marathon. she really worked hard during the match.

that's it for now. the media room is still quite empty but journalists and photographers are starting to arrive. i will post more random tidbits as the day goes on.

Kwun, correct me if I am wrong : this site is hosted out of Florida. It is all run by Asian Americans. You generate revenues through advertisements but it is not fully there yet. With the membership (once it gets to thousands), you will go IPO coz you have the numbers to show that people genuinely come into your website.

Once up (and that is the members are comfortable), you will offer membership fees (small ones at first :) ). But I guess that will depend on the advertisements that you get. You want to be the 'GATEWAY TO BADMINTON' or the badminton 'FACEBOOK'.

i wonder if anybody noticed that during the Choong/Lee and Chia/Chung match, there was a long delay at around 4-3 on the first game. the umpire really dozed off that match. firstly he got the TPE/MAS names mixed up, then later on he got their scores mixed up. after nearly 5 mins of back and forth plus the interference of the tournament referee, he finally got the scores and names correctly and the match could proceed.

the Chinese crowd is really very sporting. they will cheer for any good rallies regardless of where the players are from. you will hear whole stadium cheering and clapping when they see a long a hard fought rally. of course, in times when Chinese are behind they will always goes for the JIA YOU! routine but that's very understandable.

Li Yongbo finally shows up today. he hasn't been sitting on the coaches chair during a match, but we know that he is around and have seen his face many times. he can hardly walk from point A to point B without being stopped by a journalist. so he is behind the curtain "getting right to work at what he is good at" (i got this quote from a fellow journalist's mouth.. ;) )

my personal kudos to Sudket/Saralee, Zheng/Gao is not easy meet and S/S played very well. they were a bit affected by some call objections (some are questionable, but there are at least one that i know and saw is a good call) on the 2nd game, but they kept on the pressure and won the 3rd game very closely.

taking photos are time consuming process. besides sitting there and actually taking the photos, also need to download, filter, rate, and then convert and upload.

the arena itself has lots of spot lights and very warm. but here in the media room it is quite cool. unfortunately, they have some sort of concert going on outside and it is really loud and annoying.

would u mind telling us what are the coaches' thoughts on china's match fixing?

well, the setting was a light fun joking type of setting, so they took it quite jokingly. Rexy mentioned that once his older brother slapped the linejudge on the head when he thought he was biased.

Rexy also went to talk to the service judge after one match during this China Open and tried to talk any sense into him. but he believe the judge don't understand much English.

my feeling is that they honestly do not like it. (duh, isn't that obvious?) they have a very righteous attitude towards it and that is if one care about badminton and understand badminton, then one should understand that badminton should be played fairly. i have a lot of respect for that.

yeah usually i sit very close. if you see a not too old, nerdy looking, tall skinny Chinese guy with glasses and short hair, then it is probably me! i wear the official ugly dark green vest, white t-shirt and blue jeans. ;)

some more tidbits. there are a lot of photojournalists in the arena, i believe 20 if not 30 of us. some of them sit next to the court like what i usually do. some have huge lenses and shoot from up high among the audience. some choose to use huge lens but sit at court level. usually i sit next to the court side or at the rear end of the court as i don't have those $$$ big lenses. the court side seems to be popular though and sometimes we have 2 rows of photojournalists packed in front there.

If I were a player for example LCW and I had just beaten BCL in the final and I had a few biased line calls or any other ridiculous excuse against me (Sudket got faulted for lifting his racket up) I would definitely voice it out loud during the interview after my game....somethin like "I'm very happy I won my game...blah blah...I hope I'll be back next year but I hope the China Open next year would be free from biased judging and would be a fairer tournament than this year"......I don't care if they boo I'll still wave and smile...

another interesting tidbit from where i was sitting.

- i was at one point sitting next to Rexy/Misbun and they were coaching Choong/Lee. Rexy i believe spoke either Indonesian or Malaysian to Choong/Lee.

- at the other end of the court, Chinese coach was shouting out instructions to Guo/Xie, "slow down your speed, slow down your speed"

Kwun,

Malaysian Language and Indonesian Language has alot of similarities and they are from the same roots. All Malaysian knows "Bahasa Melayu" regardless of either they are Malaysian Chinese, Malaysian Indian, or the Malays. I believe that one time in a Chinese commentary in one of the game(i forgotten) says that the Malaysian Badminton team has very unique players and the most striking of all is that they know multiple languages even multiple dialects of chinese which includes hokkien, teochew, hakka, hainam, cantonese, mandarin...... english and malay..... should visit malaysia one time if you haven't !:D

It will be hard to Malaysianize Kwun, he have learn how to eat Durian, Lojak, Pak Kuk Teh, Rendang, ... Not "Dim Sum" or "Wan Tan Mee" :D

And yes is u... I do have recorded the match between LCW vs CJ.Guys, take a clear look of our Boss. He is so engross into the game..That is one slow motion play the capture u.. Your head is following the shuttle till it drop on court...

By the way, all the coaches know u? How come they can eat breakfast with u and chit chat with u? And is all the player & coaches aware of www.badmintoncentral.com??

yeah usually i sit very close. if you see a not too old, nerdy looking, tall skinny Chinese guy with glasses and short hair, then it is probably me! i wear the official ugly dark green vest, white t-shirt and blue jeans. ;)

lots of fans waits outside the officials entrance for their favorite players, armed with autographing materials, they starts to line up right after the match finishes. these ones are already waiting for BCL long before he got out and by the time BCL leaves, there must be 30+ girls out there screaming and cheering!

Doesn't matter how many reporters, we know you're the one who provide unbiased and "WYSIWYG" report, thanks for all effort.

thanks Han.

naturally, 90% of the journalists are local Chinese. by their affiliation their reports are going to be more Chinese oriented.

i just write what i see and hear. but unfortunately what i see is limited by how much time i have. i just don't have time to go interview players like other journalists do.

i had breakfast with ... Rexy, Hendrawan and of course HuangKwokHau, in the middle, TonyG stopped by and said Hi. and then all the time we were talking about match fixing and bad line calls and Saralee was just happening to be sitting behind us!

how lucky:eek::eek:
I wonder if I could get some players signing the petition:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

rumors has it that quite a few teams got together and complained about how the tournament is being carried out, and as a result, we see very few incident on the semi-final day. let's hope that will continue for the finals.

Fellas, fellas. Calm down. Don't throw stereotypes around like they are baseballs.

The umpire have erred (depending on which side you're on) so the focus should be on how to increase the quality of judging.

Regardless of whether it is externally influenced or a genuine human error, shouldn't it be more worthwhile to look at the avenues that allow for the recurrence of such incidents not to happen again, or at least reduce it to the most minimal of occurences?

Here's a fact though, one umpire didn't win China the MS medal - BaoCL played a good game today as well. He might have pointed out or whatsoever, but it is still the umpire or line judges who gave him the points.

Better still, none of those hardworking peasants and factory wage earners in Wuhan had anything to do with LCW losing today.

Get a grip.
