A big congratulations to WMC, we now have a full fledged World Class WS player, 30 years after our last one (Sylvia Ng).

But this is not about winning titles, or beating all the best players on their home soil, or even going through the most difficult draw ever possible. It is mainly about working hard and not giving up.

When players maintain that attitude, they will get the breakthrough eventually, as did WMC today. Our other top sportswoman, Nicol David flopped in Asian Games 2002, migrated her training ground to Holland, and is now World No 1 and twice World Champion. Mew Choo's victory should give her extra motivation to maintain consistency and achieve future glory.

I am so proud of you WMC!! All Malaysian are proud of you!! You are the first foreign female player to win an open tournament in China in 12 years!! Except a korean did it in 1994, all open tournaments woman single were won by a Chinese untill this year. Bravo WMC. I am one of the skeptic that WMC would not advance to SF let alone win the whole thing and happy she proved me wrong. Choo not only broke the ladies Great Wall of China but she done something nobody in baddy history has ever done before including Susi and Camilla...i.e. overcome CHN top 3 in a row (with a combined resume of 4 WC and 1 OLY title) and entire CHN spectators and homecourt and Yes! match fixing...Choo should be proud that CHN needs XXF/LL to match fixed their game to play an unseeded MAS player who has never won a title outside of MAS of any significance.:)

Susi is in a class all on her own...my favorite WS player of all time...there is no non-CHN players since Susi retired that can take her place...WMC just achieved a milestone in her career that most people incuding 'yours truly' did not expect her to do, and to do it in an unfavourable arena as CHN is simply amazing...so let her enjoy her day...and did it occur to you that this is WMC first Open title of any kind...so great no....but the rest of the world needs to give some challenge to CHN, whether it is from DEN, MAS, KOR, INA, etc. for us fans to enjoy and the game itself to grow.:)

WMC's style demonstrates sportsmanship ... she always tried her best to save those "incredible" shots, unlike XXF who plays a lazy game (literally, "half-alive-half-dead"). Now that WMC's skills, speed and patience are gradually overtaking PHY and XHW, she's going to be a dangerous opponent should she continue to grow. You should know that MAS' athlete training is far behind us. Most families do not want their daugthers to play badminton. Mew Choo "MM" is a hardworking Chinese girl ... and a well-mannered one. I have faith on her.

I think WMC's win made bigger impact among CHN fans (a few Chinese postings who compared WMC and Tine could imply that) because the title she won was CHINA SS, not japan SS. She was only the second non-Chinese WS winner in the history of China Open. So, we will see ...

WMC's style demonstrates sportsmanship ... she always tried her best to save those "incredible" shots, unlike XXF who plays a lazy game (literally, "half-alive-half-dead"). Now that WMC's skills, speed and patience are gradually overtaking PHY and XHW, she's going to be a dangerous opponent should she continue to grow. She may become the next Gong Zhichao or Susi Susanti.

You should know that MAS' athlete training is far behind us. Most families do not want their daugthers to play badminton. Mew Choo "MM" is a hardworking Chinese girl ... and a well-mannered one. I have faith on her.

Now it's normal that any other country's WS player wins a title. With Tang Xuehua's (their coach?) "torture", Chn WS' standard has been dropping till beyond recognition. Albeit being tall, the players "have no weapon and are unable to adapt".

I am an old man but definitely an ardent badminton-lover. I am not shy to say that when she got her winning point, my eyes went bleary with tears welling inside! Especially when I saw her facial expression when she bagged the title as if she for a while was overcome with unexpected happiness. I thought she was going to cry too!

WMC has the proper fighting spirit that shows what a champion is all about. no matter when she is winning or losing, she still keep playing and keep working very hard and never let down. i believe many players need to learn that from her.

Actually WMC would have already been assured of a place even before CO as there are 3 CHN players among top-8 and only 2 of them could participate. Of course the worry was that if she was or will be eliminated at early rounds of CO and HKO, Tine, who is one rung below her, might overtake her.

Now that with CHN likely to skip the event, WMC didn't even need to win the title to be assured of a place.

WMC now brings so much excitement to the badminton game. Previously it was just LCW now it is her as well. I have to spend more time looking at games ..... taking more of my time.:D;) But it was worth it in the CO FINALS.

we all hope WMC will keep improving and winning for sure. But we also need to remember winning and losing is normal in sports and in life. Expecting her to do the same in HK open may be is a little to harsh. She won the CHN open title by beating a whole team of top Chinese players shows that she is one of the top players in the world now. However, I think we need to give her time and space to go one level up to high consistency. Please remember that even the legendary Zhang Ning really start to blossom at the age of 26 or so. Wang Chen also become more consistent at the later part of ther career. Even current world number one XXF often experience up and down in form.Also look at Zhung Lin, who had just won World Champion in KL and got eliminated at learly rounds in following opens. And these are the mighty chinese team who has the best of every thing in training and coaching . Most importantly, they have world class teammate to spar with( also to compete with!). Whereas for WMC she has to spar with players that is weaker than her. Why do you think BAM brought in Zhou Mi to spar with her in order to prepare for major tournament? You can see how important the role of sparring partner. But she doesn't have one strong one. Besides, she is fighting alone in international tournatments. The Chinese has group advantage. And after she won the title in China, you can bet with your last dime the chinese will make full use of whatever advantage against her. They will start to watch her matches hundreds of time.

So don't be surprise there will be stronger challenges or even faillure for her in future. But this is part of the game.

Most importantly we MAS and WMC fans need to understand the situations and support our players good time and bad time.

Also someone ealier implied that her win may be due to luck. If you see the way she won the matches you will know that is not luck. Besides she has the record of beating top Chinese players and " non chinese players" many times, not just one time.Even the Chinese coahces admitted WMC has her own strenghts and has regarded her as one of the top challengers to the Chinese team.

Hope that WMC's success could inspire her teammates CEH/WPT. The duo was at one stage (2 years back?) showing their potential to be nemeses of CHN but look at where they are now - on the verge of falling out of WR top-10.

i agree on all counts.

at this point in time, WS professional players are all pretty even in terms of skill. it is impossible and totally unwise to expect your favorite player to win every single tournament, we cannot even say that for XXF, ZN, ZL, so the same can be said for WMC. if she wins a couple of titles a year it is already pretty darn good achievement.

Hope she can. She has beaten the top players so far in other tournaments. She just need to sharpen her speed and gameplans. I would say her stamina has definately improved alot. And she did has some improvement from playing with LCW.

Errrr, in case you dont know, it's an open secret that LCW is her boyfriend. They prefer to keep that low profile - I never see LCW carrying WMC's bag, sitting close to her during tournaments, not on camera at least.

Apparently China's media asked her how she and LCW going to celebrate if both of them win titles in China Open. After LCW won Semis against CJ, RTM commentator said 'LCW is waving to WMC'.

I suppose LCW give her tips on their own time since they have different coaches and train at different venues.

And don't worry, Hafiz & WMC dont train together, Hafiz's 'aura' wont get to her. I see that Wong Choon Hann's fighting spirit has gotten to her - they have same coach, so she's learning positive things from seniors, not -ve things, he he.

I guess most player will have their own style. Tat Meng didn't show much during his days as all the lime light was taken up by Rashid, Soon Kit and Yoke Meng. He certainly has got a more bushy hair during the younger days.:D Now looked very innocent and decent.:D He certainly did well to guide WMC to this 'CLASSIC' win. Wonder if this can be repeated. All right for the benefit of all those who miss out on Wong Tat Mings playing career I will feel you all in.

Some time in 1987, Wong Tat ming caused a stir when he beat Misbun in the Malaysian closed championship. Every one then thought Tat Ming would be the next m'sian hope.

Tat Ming's game then was similar to Heryanto Arbi later, very powerful legs and he just love to play net shop to lokk for lifts to smash down.

When Fang Kai Xiang (now Djarum club coach) coach M'sia, he wanted to change Tat Ming Style into a more complete package as those type of high octane game would make his career very short given that M'sia dont have many talented players and we need palyers to stay playing longer.

From then on his game suffered. With injury creeping in as well as some favouritism shown to the Sideks, Tat ming retired before his career even began but now he had proven to be a good coach in so far as WS is concerned.

WMC's game does look similar to LCW. BAM has came up with a innovative idea of having the men spar with the women on a weekly basis.

According to Rexy, he would get the MD players to tease the WD whenever they cant cope during the game and he would encourage the women players not to be affected by that and return the insults when they win a point, all done in good spirits.

What amazes me these days is WMC's footwork which looks so graceful. She has won alot of fans in China because of her humbleness and the way she carries herself in the media which come across as a little more personality esp when she complained that it was very painful when fell on the floor to retrieve the shuttle in the 3rd game.

All right for the benefit of all those who miss out on Wong Tat Mings playing career I will feel you all in.

Some time in 1987, Wong Tat ming caused a stir when he beat Misbun in the Malaysian closed championship. Every one then thought Tat Ming would be the next m'sian hope.

Tat Ming's game then was similar to Heryanto Arbi later, very powerful legs and he just love to play net shop to lokk for lifts to smash down.

When Fang Kai Xiang (now Djarum club coach) coach M'sia, he wanted to change Tat Ming Style into a more complete package as those type of high octane game would make his career very short given that M'sia dont have many talented players and we need palyers to stay playing longer.

3) From then on his game suffered. With injury creeping in as well as some favouritism shown to the Sideks, Tat ming retired before his career even began but now he had proven to be a good coach in so far as WS is concerned.

2) WMC's game does look similar to LCW. BAM has came up with a innovative idea of having the men spar with the women on a weekly basis.

1) According to Rexy, he would get the MD players to tease the WD whenever they cant cope during the game and he would encourage the women players not to be affected by that and return the insults when they win a point, all done in good spirits.

What amazes me these days is WMC's footwork which looks so graceful. She has won alot of fans in China because of her humbleness and the way she carries herself in the media which come across as a little more personality esp when she complained that it was very painful when fell on the floor to retrieve the shuttle in the 3rd game.

Firstly, thanks a lot for filling us on, good to know someone knows the history of our badminton players.

2) He he that 's more because LCW is her other half cos on normal days they train in different venues with different coaches. LCW in "My Olympic"
said when his game was down, he did his own extra training on Sat and Sun. Looks like WMC did a lot of homework.
Also Wong CH's fighting spirit rubbed on to her, both have same coach.

If I remember correctly Cheah Soon Kit was the first to push for it to improve the Wd's game. Rexy was agreeable, finally they got BAM and NSC to approve. I said finally cos Cheah SK was complaining why took so long to approve since all coaches are agreeable - he was sending messages to the "higher authorities" to move it fast.

Of course, they made it across the board, WS players also spar with the MS players.

3) Wong Tat Meng did say that he wasnt very successful during his playing days but have big goals for WMC, like winning the Olympics.

Good for him, at least his career as a coach has taken a good turn. Many were doubful about him cos he didnt make much waves as a player,Rashid Sidek wanted the post too. Somehow, between the lines, I think BAM dont like Rashid's outspoken character, gave the post to Tat Meng.

hmmm... that sounds about right..when his game is down, only WMC can lift his game up with their own training sessions on weekends and where 'love is all around...'

Btw, I played one sessionsof social badminton with Rexy a year ago, it was humble of him to come and play with us on the invitation of a friend who goes to the same church as Rexy. When he smash (and I think he was using half the force he is capable even now) you can only hear the swosh of the racket
the shuttle was so fast your eyes cant even pick it up.

Back to WMC, so cute, in the interview with Chinese media she looked like a little girl giggling all over and i bet she charmed the Chn media and Chinese fans with her squeaky voice. She should be called mighty Minnie Mouse.

If anyone didnt think she played like LCW, looked at the cross court smash she mabe. head away from the opponent, left shoulder turning towards the right and then swosh the shuttle to her left.

Only Zhu Lin paid WMC compliment and she attributed her lostto 1) she was tired 2) WMC was returning every shot, even those which Zhu lin thought was impossible to return.

Congrats to wmc. Her hard-work has paid off. She will definitely be the hot favourite to grab the gold in the upcoming sea games

I'm very happy with Mew Choo's performance....
I watched the whole match, the moment she won, it was so touching, I felt tears in my eyes.... LOLzzzz....

maybe she want to get rest for SEA games in korat starting 7 Dec.

As much as I wished WMC could repeat the same feat at HK, I seriously doubt so. CHN team (esp the scumbag) will repeatedly read the videotape of WMC again and again. He will come up with some tactics to immune WMC's stubborness on court. Remember Tine when she won the Japan Open 07 by beating 2-3 CHN (ex-CHN) players? Where does she stand now? Not at the podium anymore... I hope it wont happen to our WMC... add oil, ya :)
