View Full Version : Hong Kong Open 2007 : Day 7 (Dec 2nd) Final
sumbadder 12-02-2007, 02:48 AM even though ZYW/WYL are #1 in the world and have grabbed 3 (possibly 4 SS titles), they don't really have that many assets to their game. WYL's defense is pretty weak and ZYW isn't that good at the net. They're sort of like the GZD/XZB of CHN's women's squad: fast cannons.
oh and tjun tjun np about the comment. no harm no foul =)
KlasseE 12-02-2007, 02:48 AM what a sore loser !!!!!!!!!
agree, so what, surely our referee n linemen will help our master to win the title...win is win....congrat to our master

Pemuda 12-02-2007, 02:50 AM damn,..................... Lin Dan won...... From the linecalls, Hong Kong is also Li Yongbo's territory.......... That cheating *********
Come on! Dont you know how to accept defeat graciously?
Dude, even if you change all the line judges, make LCW's court smaller, tie LD up, LCW will still lose to a top rate LD today.

Pemuda 12-02-2007, 02:56 AM Come on TG/CW!! Show the younger pairs how to do it on a long term basis.
I like this TG/CW, simply because they are down to earth. You wont see any show boating, bracelets, chains etc. They just get down and do their business.
Jessica 12-02-2007, 02:57 AM Anyone who watch the rtm1,why the commentator express his condolence???What happened???

pjswift 12-02-2007, 03:06 AM Absolutely true ! totally agree.
I've been working as linesman before, believe me, sometimes it is hard to judge..
Getting into a linesman's mind..even when in doubt ,you still have to make a call ,right? How do you decide then? By reflex?
Erwin Kyoto 12-02-2007, 03:07 AM GDTV back on badminton game..stay put.

Smichz 12-02-2007, 03:12 AM 11-6..kido/hendra leading..just like usual..hendra control the game..
madbad 12-02-2007, 03:12 AM Pretty one-sided in the 1st game. Let's see if the veterans can adjust
samuel882 12-02-2007, 03:12 AM cmon markis/hendra.. show to your senior that you are ready to replace them
Come on ToneDra.. Teach ur juniors a good lesson
dannyang 12-02-2007, 03:13 AM Some things I observed during LD vs LCW.
Whenever LD lose 1 point or gets a setback, he walks around a lot and waste a lot of time. e.g. asking for floor wipes and removal of name tags. LCW's momentum is then lost and he makes mistakes due to loss of patience. I can say this happen on almost every rally where LD lost.
LCW on the other hand always want to get the game moving and is already waiting for the go. However he always had to wait for LD to be ready, hence LD controls the flow of the game.
This way LD forces his presence onto the court. LCW fails to recover his control and style and is forced to adjust to LD's style. This is very crucial to LCW becoz his play method is very sharp and needs a lot of concentration. (Look at all those very high quality shot LCW makes.) Therefore, LCW has very little mental strength to lose before he starts to make a lot of mistakes and lose the game.
Another way LD force his 'prowess' on to LCW is to shout across the court for removing of name tags and also calls the umpire to undo a linecall.
If it is skill vs skill LCW clearly is better, however LD incorporates psychological tricks into the game where LCW choose not to join or is less capable of. IMO, I think LCW lives in a more simple and innocent part of the world.
Although it is less honorable this way, it is a factor in the real world and hence it is LCW responsiblity as a pro. player to take that into account. No matter how hard you train, or how skilled you are, if u ignore that, you lose.
Look at the last match point where LD keeps interrupting the serves.
In short if you think this world is perfect and honest you will lose. You must expect sh!t, eat sh!t, and give sh!t otherwise you are just denying the real world and living in a dream.
speechless...
there is another sore loser
samuel882 12-02-2007, 03:14 AM This games looks suspicious...

wilfredlgf 12-02-2007, 03:46 AM Lovely match this.
The old farts had shown the boys that speed and power is not everything - skills and intelligence is just as important.
It seems to me that the old boys haven't lost it - skill-wise and court awareness seemed to have not diminished with age.
And the crowd was funny - when the oldies win points, there were cheers; when it's the other way around, you hear mostly groans. :)
The day CW/TG retire is the day an era ends.

More interestingly, GD sports commentator said When this last tourney is over, LCw and girlfriend will have holiday back in Penang. And they immediately mentioned WMC. Very direct, China media, here it's never mentioned, just hinted.
CLELY 12-02-2007, 04:32 AM Back-to-back SS title for both INA World Champions, well done to end this year! Very interesting match in XD when Nova/Lilyana perform their best to beat the most successful XD pair in SS tour. Yeah, only INA pair can troubling them beside Sudket/Saralee, seems the rivalry between INA-CHN in this division will continue next year...
pjswift 12-02-2007, 04:33 AM I totally agreed with you. I just have one question to ask: Has there any disputed linescalls, including China Open, that were made in favour of LCW. If there is, even once, then the dispute should stop. If none, then I think those persons who suspect of foul play have the right to voice their discontents.
Good point.Unless someone can point out otherwise, all disputed calls had favoured CHN in both CO and HKO.
However it would be foolish for non-CHN players to expect otherwise. It is still possible to win as THA XD proved it in CO, though almost impossible in the horrific MSF conditions of CO.
But players have choices. There are 14 major tournaments. In the run to maximise OG08 ranking points, it makes sense to play all the SS.After that it makes sense to be highly selective.
For example, if LCW were to win at least 4 SS titles next year before CO08 and HKO08,he should have the privilege of skipping definitely CO08 and maybe HKO08. Resting would reduce burnout and help recharge him so his career is not shortened. Why go to CO08 to try and spoil the party and be a victim of much nasty intrigue if he can avoid it?
Today's MSF is civilised.LD behaved gracious and showed much maturity. But he proved how much concentration is needed to win. In G1, he complained of many distractions and that probably led to many unforced errors and his washout score.(Now you know why LCW lost in CO). Once LD started to focus, so did his game. But LCW can be proud of his performance despite his slower speed.I expected him to go out tamely in 2 games but he managed to give the crowd great value for money.
It's great to know that so many believe LCW can still defeat LD even under less favourable conditions. They certainly think very highly of LCW.
Hope LCW gets to heal his knees completely. Playing with pain is no joke and not the way to win.

badMania 12-02-2007, 08:01 AM MD:
Tony/Candra vs Kido/Setiawan: TONYG and CANDRA can and will win it. They have been very impressive playing against TAN/Koo as well as against their INA counterpart during the Semis. Kido/Setiawan may be good, but i dont think they enough Fire to win compare to the Oldies. See if they can prove to Tony/Candra that they are the worthy current World Champs.
Look's like Kido/Hendra HAVE PROVEN that they are the worthy Current World Champions, having beaten the 2005 All England and 2006 World Champions Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun and now the 2000 Sydney Olympics Gold Medallists Tony Gunawan/Candra Wijaya, who are both World Champions themselves with Halim Heryanto and Sigit Budiarto respectively.
Not enough Fire to win ???
They had 16 smashes compared to 12 for Tony/Candra in today's Final.
They had 16 smashes compared to 7 for Fu/Cai in yesterday's Semi-Final.
Add the 20 odds smashes for the lesser opponents in the past 3 matches.

badMania 12-02-2007, 08:10 AM MD:
Tony/Candra vs Kido/Setiawan, Difficult to say who's gonna win this one, last time they met, the grand old men were thrashed quite significantly. But with added belief, Kido/Setiawan may just find the going tough, unless the match drags on to 3 games.
abedeng's comments are always the fairest :) Indeed, Kido/Hendra did find the going slightly tougher today than yesterday, esp in the second set when they were in the less favoured court  Hendra did make a fair number of mistakes and looked a bit hesitant at times. And yes, your prediction went true....the match did go to rubber-set (to the crowds' delight) and Kido/Hendra did manage to establish a healthy 11-5 advantage before returning back to the "nightmare" court.
badMania 12-02-2007, 08:13 AM wow chinese threads praising this pair....as much as I love this pair I think Cai and Fu gave it to them for free cos they are like...come on Fu we have more than 4 they only have one so let them have this one...honestly Kido_hendra doesn't know how to kill like Tony-Chandra...tomorrow's match would prove it
Fu/Cai gave it to them for free??? LOL...this must be the funniest comments I have read recently
Ok....so today's match have proven that they CAN KILL!
z3048018 12-02-2007, 08:16 AM what MK/HS did to FHF/CY was grissly MURDER!!!
badMania 12-02-2007, 08:16 AM You didn't see their quarter final game. Although they won, they really struggled. Macau does have other distractions though!
FYI, I DID WATCH the QF game. Yes, the game was littered with errors, but, like what I explained in the other thread, once the World Champion upped their tempo and started to play their fast breaks, the Japanese pair was troubled and it was all over very quickly.
Did u watch the game between Flandy/Vita vs the Hongkong pair ? The scoreline might suggested that they struggled...but in reality, it was more of a practice match
badMania 12-02-2007, 08:18 AM what MK/HS did to FHF/CY was grissly MURDER!!!
That is more like it. It has been a long time since I saw them killing their opponents so quickly. Past few SS have seen them struggling against the lesser pairs, killing them only marginally.
Yesterday, they were up for the match and DID NOT ALLOW the Chinese pair to play the game FROM THE START! That's why the scoreline was kinda surprising to many ppl.

badMania 12-02-2007, 08:26 AM Sorry, I wasn;t being clear - I was referring to the QF in Macau Open.
Was it even relevant to today's match ? They struggled many times in recent months against many pairs....I am not surprised
These are the matches they have struggled against recently:
Chinese Taipei Open R16 against Sakamoto/Ikeda -- 21-17 in rubber-set
The above-mentioned match in Macau Open against Gan/Lin -- 23-21 in rubber-set
Denmark Open R16 against Guo/Xie -- 21-19 in rubber-set
French Open R16 against Logosz/Mateusiak -- 21-18 in rubber-set
China Open QF against Eriksen/Hansen -- 21-16 in rubber-set
What was more relevant was the way they killed off Fu/Cai's challenge so efficiently yesterday and yet many ppl seemed to have disregarded that match and blamed Fu/Cai's indifferent form to a number of excuses

Badmania, congrats again to your heros. Thought you wouldnt come in here tonite, busy celebrating with your favourite MD players. :D
And yes, looks like in HK Open, Kdio/Setiawan decided to really really go out, it's the last SS of year. In my humble opinion, they even played better than WC Semis & Finals cos Tony & Chandra were all over the court.
The 2 veterans improved much too.

Kido & Setiawan have had the luxury and benefit of watching innumerable matches featuring Tony & Candra... and it's certainly to Tony's and Candra's credit that they could still put up such a stiff fight.
However, it must be said that the younger Indonesians played their heart out.
They played brilliantly. :)
badMania 12-02-2007, 08:59 AM What a fortnight it has been for Team INA and the fans (including me, Hau-Ge and many others watching on TV). The World Champions in MD and XD: Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan and Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir eventually managed to win a Super Series title and they ended the season in style, winning back-to-back titles in Guangzhou and Hong Kong, beating some of their most feared opponents enroute to the titles.
Let's start with Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir. Yes, I personally think that this partnership is not perfect, but after looking at so many matches over the past few years, I realised that ALL XD pairs have their weaklinks after all  It's a matter of who performed better on the courts in the crucial matches. Nova/Butet have been in indifferent form since their World Championships title in August this year, losing in early rounds of the Denmark Open to Sudket/Saralee, losing twice to Laybourn/Rytter-Juhl in the Chinese-Taipei and French Opens, and losing in the Japan Open Final to Zheng Bo/Gao Ling. They seem to have been overshadowed by their team mates, Flandy Limpele/Vita Marissa, who have won two Super Series titles in Singapore and Paris and another GP Gold title in Taipei.
The roads to the titles were not easy either and they managed to clear all the tough hurdles being presented to them in the past 2 weeks! They have beaten the World No 1 (Zheng Bo/Gao Ling in the Hong Kong Open Final), World No 3 (Flandy Limpele/Vita Marissa, twice in the China and Hong Kong Opens), World No 5 (Nathan Robertson/Gail Emms in the China Open Semi-Final), World No 7 (Thomas Laybourn/Kamilla Rytter-Juhl in the Hong Kong Open Quarter-Final), and World No 8 (Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thoungthongkam in the China Open Final). That's 5 of the top 8 pairs (which include themselves)!
Today's match against their nemesis, the World No 1 Zheng Bo/Gao Ling was filled with nail-biting moments. The scores were tight from the start and both pairs made many errors. The INA pair was quick to establish a 4 points advantage at 11-7 at the interval of the first set, but was levelled at 12-12. Then, the INA pair surged ahead again at 14-14 to find themselves holding 4 game points at 20-16, only for the serve to change hands to the Chinese pair, and Gao Ling's serves rattled the INA pair  Zheng/Gao eventually managed to level it at 20-20 and even had a game point at 21-21. The first game point was saved by the INA pair, but, Nova made a crucial service error (at least 3-4 times this set in the less favoured court) and that resulted in another game point for the Chinese pair. They did not let slip of this advantage and finished the first set off 23-21 :crying:
The pattern pretty much similar in the second set as the INA pair always found themselves leading a few points only for the Chinese pair to level it at 7-7, 8-8 and then 18-18 in the crucial stage. Luckily for Nova/Butet, they did not let Zheng/Gao win anymore points as they took the second set 21-18.
In the rubber-set, it was the Chinese pair who had the early advantage at 6-3 and then 8-6. Nova/Butet did not give up and turned the situation into a slender lead at 11-9. Now, they switched to the more favoured court and continued to maintain the 2-points lead at 16-14 and then 19-17. The Chinese pair again levelled it at 19-19 to make it a real tense affair for the supporters of both teams. Eventually, the INA pair pulled it off with the final 2 points of the match. Nova/Butet won in three tight sets 20-22, 21-18, 21-19. Congrats!

Thanks....it was hard-fought game indeed and Tony/Candra DID GIVE their best!
badMania 12-02-2007, 09:33 AM No. I am one of INA want Tony-Chandra win... Both from INA...The coach not help them for this final I think... I don't like kido-hendra coach--Sigit Pamungkas.
CORRECTION: Tony/Candra is not a Pelatnas pair, so, no coach. Sigit Pamungkas is a nice guy  He has certainly helped Kido/Hendra become a better pair this year.

The tactical part were demonstrated during WC 07 when they played CTF/LWW in Semis. changed strategy midway thru Game 2.
But like what Badmania says, they always seem to lose confidence when playing KKK/TBH (or Rexy found the way the beat them & KKK/TBH perfected it), so we didnt get to see much of their prowness lately.
Anyway, with this win, they'll be World no 1 again next week.
badMania 12-02-2007, 10:04 AM Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan HAVE WON 4 titles this year, including a World Championships, 2 back-to-back Super Series, and 1 GP Gold titles. The number is the same as Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun (4 Super Series titles) and still inferior to Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong (4 Super Series and 2 GP Gold titles), arguably their 2 most feared opponents in the past 2 years.
Many people are still yet to be convinced that they are a WORTHY WORLD CHAMPION. I hope Kido/Hendra's successful defense of BOTH the China and Hong Kong Opens titles will have silenced the critics  They have an almost flawless record in Greater China region in the past 2 years, losing only 2 matches: both to Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun (1 in the inconsequential Group stage of the Invitational World Cup 2006 which Kido/Hendra eventually won and the other one was in the controversial China Masters Final in Chengdu this year).
Nevertheless, they show that they can also beat the pair which is regarded as the most consistent pair in recent years, Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun, TWICE in straight sets! In both matches, Fu/Cai were made to play so uncomfortably and become so frustrated at the end that they were not unable to play their normal game
In the past two weeks, Kido/Hendra have beaten the World No 2 (Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun in the Hong Kong Open Semi-Final), World No 6 (Tony Gunawan/Candra Wijaya in the Hong Kong Open Final), World No 7 (Jens Eriksen/Martin Lundgaard Hansen in the China Open Quarter-Final), World No 9 (Guo Zhendong/Xie Zhongbo in the China Open Final), World No 12 (Tadashi Ohtsuka/Keita Masuda in the Hong Kong Open Quarter-Final).
Today's match against Tony/Candra was a match of two halves. In the first set, Kido/Hendra was the dominant pair from the beginning and they led 11-6 at the interval as they were in the favoured court. The gap increased from 5 to 10 points at 19-10 as the veteran pair could not cope with Kido/Hendra's strategy. Kido/Hendra eventually won the set 21-12.
Once they changed courts, the problems which we saw in Nova/Butet's earlier match started to appear in Kido/Hendra. Tony/Candra gained more confidence as the match wore on. Meanwhile, Hendra started to make a number of uncharacteristics errors, such as serving to the net (like Nova).Kido/Hendra were never leading in the second set, only managing to level the scores at 8-8 before Tony/Candra find their rhtym and extend their lead to 15-10. The younger pair staged a mini-comeback to narrow the gap to 16-18, but, it was not enough and Tony/Candra managed to force a rubber-game.
Knowing that they have to win as many points as possible as they were once again in the favoured court, Kido/Hendra attacked their seniors relentlessly and had a pretty comfortabe 11-6 lead at the interval. Back to the less favoured court, they played more cautiously and eventually they were not troubled at all. Kido/Hendra won the rubber-set 21-13.
So, overall, it's a perfect fortnight for fans of Kido/Hendra, being able to defend their titles against all odds and showing to the others that they are one of the strong contender for the Gold Medal in the Beijing Olympics 2008. The good record in China will further help their cause

These 3 r the ones who deserved to be in the top rank in MD.So,whoever be the no 1,it's not really important.Their level,play..are the top form of the current MD game. They deserved some credits, regardless which country they r representing.:):)
