Badminton: Tough for shuttlers
By RAJES PAUL
PETALING JAYA: Indonesia will be at full strength for badminton in the SEA Games. And the draw is unfavourable to the Malaysians.
With the odds stacked against them, Malaysia can only expect one gold medal from their top women's singles player Wong Mew Choo in the Korat Games next month.
From the draw released by the Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC) in Bangkok on Wednesday, only Mew Choo has reason to smile.
The 2003 gold medallist at the Games in Hanoi is the top seed and she is drawn to meet Singaporean Li Li in the semi-finals. The other half of the draw has second seed Maria Kristin Yulianti of Indonesia, Singaporean Xing Aiying and Malaysian Julia Wong.
It will be tough for Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty to retain the women's doubles title. How the pair would fare would very much depend on the condition of Eei Hui, who is carrying back and knee injuries.
They are seeded second behind China-born Singaporeans Li Yujia-Jiang Yanmei and the biggest threat in their path to the final are Indonesians Polii Greysia-Jo Novita, who have been drawn in their quarter.
The men's singles and doubles gold medals are as good in Indonesia's bag.
The top two seeds – Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat and World Championships runner-up Sony Dwi Kuncoro – are expected to make it a 1-2 finish in the men's singles.
Malaysia's Yeoh Kay Bin is expected to meet Taufik in the quarter-finals while top back-up shuttler Tan Chun Seang is likely to meet Sony at the same stage.
In the men's doubles, world champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan are expected to live up to their top billings in the biennial Games. Malaysia's best bets – Gan Teik Chai-Lin Woon Fui – are expected to meet them in the semi-finals.
In the lower half of the draw, Mohd Razif Abdul Latif-Khoo Chung Chiat will have to overcome two pairs – Singaporeans Hendra Wijaya-Hendri Kurniawan Saputra and second seeds Joko Riyadi-Hendra Gunawan of Indonesia – to make it to the final.
In the team events, Malaysia are the third and top seeds in the men's and women's competitions respectively and Indonesia are the favourites to take both the titles.
The team competitions are scheduled for Dec 8-10 and the individual events will be held from Dec 11-14.
At the last Games in Manila in 2005, a stronger Malaysian team, led by Lee Chong Wei, won three of the seven gold medals at stake.

If you have reading the Msian news, you will know that it is to give exposure to the
1) juniors (for the men). Always they are in the background, senior squad 1st, when is their chance, that sort of feeling.
2) Seniors like KBH, Gan/Lin - to boost their morale and to lead the juniors. KBH as you know, not much in terms of performance.
Gan/Lin supposed to be the weakest senior MD pair(this was before CCM announce retirement). With selection trials for SS, being the weakest pair, when will they ever get to go, with 4 pairs better than them. At least they have a role to play, they're not that bad actually.
At least they can feel proud to represent the country - they are very excited and grateful for their 1st call to play such a role, especially the juniors. Both BAM and NSC are not putting high hopes in the men's department.
The medals are supposed to come from the women this time, i.e. WMC, WongPT/ChinEH. They are supposed to lead the way for Malaysia to win the Women's team event.

HIGH hopes are on the men's doubles shuttlers Gan Teik Chai-Lin Woon Fui to save the day for Malaysia in the SEA Games men's badminton competition.
They are the only Malaysian players with a shot to prevent an Indonesian team at full strength from making a clean sweep of the three men's gold medals at stake.
Despite the odds against them, Teik Chai-Woon Fui are determined to use the Games as a stepping-stone for bigger opportunities in the national team.
“We have a fighting chance to win a medal and our hope is to nail the gold,” said Teik Chai, who will be making his Games debut.
“Our future as a pair will depend very much on our results in the SEA Games.
“If we do well, there is a better chance for us to be considered for other major tournaments like the Thomas Cup Finals.
“There will also be a review of the players in the national team and we will certainly retain our place in the squad with a good showing.”
If the world number 35 pair can play with consistency, they can be counted on to give the top two seeded Indonesians – reigning world champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan and Joko Riyadi-Hendra Gunawan – a run for their money.
The Malaysians are expected to cross swords with Markis-Hendra in the semi-finals, who they came close to beating in the Macau Open quarter-finals last month.
But they grew complacent in the Vietnam Open and the Malaysian International Challenge this month, losing to Chien Yu-hsun-Lin Yu-lang of Taiwan in the last eight and Mohd Razif Abdul Latif-Khoo Chung Chiat in the semi-finals respectively.
Razif-Chung Chiat, who are also inconsistent, are in the lower half of the draw with Joko-Hendra and Singaporeans Hendra Wijaya-Hendri Kurniawan Saputra.
“We (Woon Fui and I) know that we have a chance but sometimes, we get distracted. Hopefully, we will rise to the occasion,” said Teik Chai.
The men's singles and team gold medals are as good as in Indonesian hands.
Barring any upsets, Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat and Sony Dwi Kuncoro are set to make it an all-Indonesian affair in the men's singles. But Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana could spoil their party.
It will be difficult for Malaysia to land even the bronze. Yeoh Kay Bin is likely to meet Taufik in the quarter-finals while the country's top back-up shuttler Tan Chun Seang is set to face Sony at the same stage. With Simon Santoso at third singles, Indonesia look invincible in the men's team competition and Malaysia can forget about retaining the title.

from the star online...
BAM depend on women shuttlers to deliver their two-gold target
THEY have beaten world number one Chinese players. They have made it among the top 10 ranked shuttlers in the world. And they have won gold medals at the Commonwealth Games.
And at the Korat SEA Games, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty as well as Wong Mew Choo will be out to win the women's doubles and singles titles for the second time in the biennial series.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) are banking on Eei Hui-Pei Tty and Mew Choo to meet their two-gold target at the Games. Eei Hui-Pei Tty are the defending champions while Mew Choo was the winner in the 2003 Games in Vietnam.
“I am no longer troubled by my knee injury. And my back injury is getting better. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the injuries do not act up during the Games,” said Eei Hui, who picked the back injury at the Danish Open last month.
“Our best performance this year is a win over China's Zhang Yawen-Wei Yili (at the Danish Open). It has given us more confidence.”
Currently ranked at number 10 in the world, Eei Hui-Pei Tty, who won the gold medal in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games last year, are likely to take on Indonesians Greysia Polii-Jo Novita in the quarter-finals at Korat.
In the lower half of the draw are top seeds Li Yujia-Jiang Yanmei of Singapore, China Masters champions Vita Marissa-Lilyana Natsir of Indonesia and the Malaysian back-up squad pair of Ng Hui Lin-Goh Liu Ying.
“We defeated Greysia-Novita in the final at 2005 Manila SEA Games. They will be out for revenge. It will be a close affair because the standard of all these players are about the same. It will be a great end for the year if Malaysia can win both the women's doubles and singles events,” said Eei Hui.
Malaysia's top women's singles shuttler Mew Choo, who played a pivotal role to help Malaysia win the mixed team gold medal in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, has a good chance to regain the title.
The world number eight is the top seed and her first real challenge will probably be against Singapore's Li Li in the semi-finals.
Second seed Maria Yulianti of Indonesia is in the other half of the draw with Singapore's Xing Aiying and Malaysia's Julia Wong.
After beating China's world number one Xie Xingfang in the third round of the World Championships in Kuala Lumpur in August, Mew Choo is certainly looking good to claim the gold medal in Korat.

Sea Games: Blow to Mew Choo
MALAYSIA's hopes on Wong Mew Choo winning a gold medal in the SEA Games badminton competition has taken a severe blow.
The top women's singles shuttler is down with a recurring knee injury and she has been ruled out of the team competition. And her participation in the individual event, where she is the top seed, now hangs in the balance.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) general manager, Kenny Goh, said yesterday that the injury to Mew Choo was serious.
“She is certainly out of the team event (which begins on Saturday). But we will wait for a report from the NSI (National Sports Institute) before making a decision on her participation in the individual event (next week),” he said.
The 24-year-old Mew Choo aggravated the injury en route to a sensational victory at the China Open in Guangzhou last month where she chalked up victories over the world's top players three players from China – Xie Xingfang, Zhang Ning and Zhu Lin.
It was her first ever win over the Olympic champion Zhang Ning and reigning world champion Zhu Lin. And she was also the only second non-China player to win the China Open women's singles title.
Coach Wong Tat Meng said that the 2003 Vietnam SEA Games gold medallist was not in her best condition.
“She was already playing with knee pains during the China Open. It was more painful for her after the tournament. On top of that, her toe nail had also came off,” he said.
“She went on to play in the Hong Kong Open but could not give her best (she was beaten by Salakjit Ponsana of Thailand in the first round).
“I wanted to gauge her condition after the Hong Kong Open. I made her run on the treadmill. She just could not cope. She could hardly put pressure on her leg. She went to see the doctors today and has been told that she needs further treatment.
“This is just unfortunate. Mew Choo was really looking forward to regaining the SEA Games title. We cannot take risks as she has a more important task – the Beijing Olympics.”
Without Mew Choo, Malaysia will be hard-pressed to land a badminton gold medal. It is difficult for women's top pair Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty to stamp their mark in Korat because much would depend on the former, who is recovering from back and ankle injuries.
Malaysia have an under-strength men's team spearheaded by Yeoh Kay Bin. It will be an uphill task for them in the company of a full-strength Indonesia, led by Taufik Hidayat.

On top of that, her toe nail had also came off ,” he said.

Oh, is it? Looks more like a cat to me. But Louisa also likes mouse (remember she offers rodents, cooked in a variety of styles to some PAWers?) and likes to play the cat and mouse game. So not much diff! :D

MS
Gold: Taufik or Sony. Unless they were too tired after too many tournaments in this past few weeks. Boonsak still had small chanmce to win if he raise his level very high and hope Taufik and Sony play below their normal game.
WS
Assumed WMC is injures. Gold will be fight amongst Maria Kristin, Salakjit and Firdasari.
MD
Gold: 100 % absolutely Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan. Unless they suddenly freeze at Sea Games level which is impossible.
WD
Gold: If they are not tired playing XD and WD, Vita and Liliyana Natsir will win. Others pairs still below their level.
XD
Gold; Nova and Lilyana Natsir or Flandi/Vita.
Indonesia at least will win 3 gold medal here or maybe 4 or even all of 5 if the women singles play 110%.

For team events, in men team, Indonesia will win the gold. In women team, without Wong Mew Choo, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand had the same chance to win gold with Indonesia leading a little bit just because they had 2 good WD where Singapore only had 1 good WD and Thailand none.

from Berita Harian
Jejas peluang negara raih emas
WMC is out, WD also maybe cannot play. Poor BAM, send back-up players, being critized. Send top players but dont win, also get blasting.
LCW is also injured for MS, so even if BAM had listed him, he may have to sit out too. Only left MD.
Overall, Thailand & Spore dont see themselves as strong contenders for OG, so SEA Games is main aim. Some Spore players didnt go HK Open, just to prepare for SEA Games.
Badmania was mad Indonesia tire out their top players by sending them to SEA Games. Maybe he can put this BH writer straight, he he.

Msia WS & half WD - WMC & Chin EH is out of action due to injury, doctors say they must rest at least 2 weeks.
from New Straits Times
Sea Games: Good and bad news greets camp
THERE was both good and bad news for the Malaysian camp yesterday.
While it was confirmed that women’s singles shuttler Wong Mew Choo and doubles Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui are out of the Sea Games, diver Bryan Nickson Lomas has been certified fit.
While Mew Choo is nursing a knee injury, Eei Hui is down with a back injury and has been ordered to rest for a minimum two weeks.
Mew Choo, who was the top seed, will be replaced by Lydia Cheah in the individual competition.
Lydia will also join Julia Wong and Anita Raj Kaur as the three singles players for the team event, which begins tomorrow.
“I have received a letter from Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz (National Sports Institute director general) on Mew Choo and Eei Hui’s injuries and both are definitely out,” said Malaysian Chef-de-Mission Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad.
Having opted to keep the top men’s players at home, Malaysia were counting on Mew Choo and Pei Tty-Eei Hui to deliver the targeted two gold.
Mew Choo won gold in Vietnam in 2003 and silver two years ago in Manila while Pei Tty-Eei Hui were to defend their gold in Korat.
Pei Tty will now partner Woon Khe Wei.
It was not all gloom though as Dr Ramlan has given Bryan the green light to compete.
“Bryan will be making the trip and we will provide him full medical assistance to ensure he does not aggravate the injury,” said Dr Ramlan.
Bryan is targeted to deliver the 10m platform and 3m springboard gold medals.

INA looks likely to take all the golds, but there will be challenge from SIN (Women's Team), XD (Sudket/Saralee) and WS (SIN/THA, maybe MAS youngsters). Otherwise, I would say it's all INA, might even be all-INA affairs.
But it would be interesting to see how MAS juniors fare, they haven't been exposed much, esp the girls.

taufik said he shouldn't play in Sea games.. but he can't refuse to play if his country 'calls' him ... what a patriotic he is :D :D
he's mature already and need more time with his wife, daughter, and family actually..I think Tommy, Alamsyah, Ari Yuli, and Andre Tedjono should already well performed next year after OG 2008 for sake of INA MS regeneration
Taufik didn't share rooms with any of the Team members. He have a hotel room to stay.

Unless the wife & baby came along, like Nova's wife, then must stay with family. Funny though, we are not Indonesian, yet... Maybe the fans dont realise it when they give out all this info.

Me?..no...in many tournaments, TH got his own room, mostly provided by organizers....hm...I do not think I make him bad...even Ants knows that..;);)
remember that TH still draws the crowd.....so Ants also make TH look bad too?
Its ok for me to make him look bad... hehehe.. he took alot of money from me. Not that i loaned him any money.. we had bets between each other.

Not intentionally. I know you very supportive of Indonesia. No need to tell all and sundry - cos I didnt know that info. Like Taufik got special treatment, other players 2nd class.
If Taufik wants he can decline to stay in own room, for team spirit sake stay with everyone else. Anyway, that's just my PR side talking, Taufik is not one to care about image.
Ants is not Indonesian, so he can make Taufik look bad all he wants (which he doesnt);)
And of course, if a Msia player did that(assuming has credentials like Taufik), teruk kena called arrogant, big-headed, prima donna, lupa daratan, and a host of other labels I'm sure they'll come up with.
So you are not good in betting then???:D:D
Well depend on what kind of bet. I have my own luck as well... or i would say calculated risks.

Anyway...I just confirmed what Ants say....I do not know your intention as I did not make TH look bad at all...we ,INA fans, never say bad things about our players....so Ants can make TH look bad?? and it is okay????
TH has a right not to decline the offer...we cant judge him and tell him what to do....he is a mature player...leave it is to him to make his own decision.....
Taufik actually don't mind staying with the gang. They are teammates afterall. But he is offered to stay in a hotel. So you can't just say no when everything is already prepared for you.
Just to clarify that "Ants make TH look Bad" is just a joke hah.. i don't want to create a mess here.
Another example.. during the WorldChampionship in Kuala Lumpur recently. Taufik even have his own driver to send him places and even to the tournament venue from the Hotel. Well he did took the bus from time to time. About the driver... there is already people arrange it for him. If i were him i would just accept it. If i were to reject.. i might offend the person who have everything arranged for me.

Yes, Yes, SEA Games, preparing my next installment of 'adventures of mighty mouse & mighty pillar' for their win in MD(hopefully).
Our Gan/Lin, hopefully a medal to prove their worthiness in MD senior squad.
I do hope Lin/Gan can make an impact. Both of them are rather inconsistent. Hope they will take advantage of this SEAGAMES since their other teammates are not around. Show them what you can do guys.

Yes, she is the daughter of the Crown Prince, ie grand-daughter of the Thai King.
She is very supportive of badminton and has even played in Singapore where I have the unique chance of seeing her up close in person and in action on the courts, playing XD.
I think her crowning glory was during the last SEA Games in Manila where the Thai women's team won gold and she was in that team.

thanks for the info Loh. you even have a picture with her :D. i think it is beneficial when royalty are interested in sports. more so if they love to play it. My state's Sultan loves field hockey and he was good at it when he was younger. the current Agong loves horse riding and he has even represented Malaysia in competitions. :D

What? Is she really the grand daughter of the Great Rama 9, Maharaja Bhumibol Aduljadej? She must be very well respected in the team then.
Remind me of the King himself who also took part in the Sea games before and even got a gold if Im not mistaken.

I'd say she has certainly improved much over the last year.
It's also nice to see the Malaysian girl 'apologising' for a body smash.

If u guys think Taufik participated in SEA for the sake of S$31,000, i think that's a big joke. For his status (on and off court), he is sorta like a superstar and no lack of endorsements. His wife is from a wealthy family, so Taufik doesnt need the $31k at all.
