Games-Fiery Taufik ordered off courts after outburst
Reuters via Yahoo!Malaysia News (http://http://malaysia.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/20071212/tap-games-asia-taufik-c3bb44c.html)
NAKHON RATCHASIMA, Thailand, Dec 12 - Olympic badminton champion Taufik Hidayat was ordered off the courts by security staff after a heated stand-off with match officials at the Southeast Asian Games on Wednesday.
After beating Malaysian Yeoh Kay Bin to scrape through to the semi-finals, the irate Indonesian gestured angrily at a line judge and waved his racket in the umpire's face before reluctantly shaking his hand and marching off the court.
Moments later, when he returned to the courts to calm down, a shirtless Taufik began remonstrating with worried-looking volunteers and officials before security guards surrounded him and told him to leave.
Taufik, 26, was unhappy with Thai officials' handling of his game, seeing a link with the title chances of fellow semi-finalist and home favourite Boonsak Ponsana.
"If the Thais want to win the gold medal so much, I'll just give it to them," a furious Taufik told Reuters after being sent to the stands.
"The judging was terrible, bad calls happened to me so many times. I told him never to do that to another player."
The former world champion added: "I don't know what happened there, I don't know why they had to call security.
"They said I wasn't allowed to sit in these seats because they're VIP seats, but all the Thai players have been sitting here for days."
Taufik is one of badminton's most colourful characters and is as famous for his speed and deadly backhand as he is his passion and fiery temperament.
Some 5,000 athletes from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, East Timor, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Brunei, Myanmar and the Philippines, are contesting the SEA Games -- famed for fierce rivalry, accusations of bias and tit-for-tat squabbles -- with 475 gold medals up for grabs in 43 sports.
Hosts Thailand are runaway leaders in the medals standings with 116 golds, 59 more than second-placed Vietnam. The Games conclude on Saturday.

"They said I wasn't allowed to sit in these seats because they're VIP seats, but all the Thai players have been sitting here for days."
..the funny thing i noticed was, if Taufik was offered to stay in a nicer hotel unlike his teammates, shouldn't he be offered to sit in those VIP seats??....
Actually in the SEA Individual Event Semifinals thread, the article (not sure how accurate it is) posted by IieSumirat (post #19), mentioned that Taufik actually was escorted away when he sat in one of the line-judge's chair, whilst he was still furious and emotional over the dubious calls. He also complained why he couldn't sit in one of those chairs; rather was asked not to sit there, i guess, to cool off.:p

It appears in today's Singapore's Straits Times too. And for a moment when I read the header this morning, I thought TH was disqualified (ordered off court!) by the match officials - I thought oh no this will create a big drama, but fortunately the incident happened after the match.
But you can imagine this sets a pretty tense prelude if TH and Boosak proceed further to the final.
did anyone watch the match? was the objections from Taufik justified?

TH also complained about unfair line judging in Busan Asian Games 2002 when INA met KOR in Men's Team Final and KOR won gold. Nakhon Ratchasima 2007, once again TH can't control his emotion properly, maybe he needs anger therapy to minimize his temperamental attitude particularly to face the most important event next year in Beijing.

I partially agree with you there, Taufik needs some control over his emotions. Then again, we all feel aggrieved if not treated fairly, even more so for players who represent their countries for glory.
So while Taufik's actions are not quite right, I must say that I feel for him and all players who undergo this "handicap".

why Taufik said like that...yeah...as we know he is holder many titles of badminton tournaments and has also many gold medals...Olympic gold medal, Asean Games Gold medal (Busan and Doha), Sea Games 2001 gold medal (Team and individual events), World Champ Gold medal, Thomas cup 2000-2002 Gold medal....so one gold medal...no meaning for him if any unfair judgment in Badminton tournament. Surely, he just trying to do his best and doing the best for his country in this Sea Games...
If so many umpire' mistakes...it would give his opponents 'bonus points' and then can win the match...:confused:

One or two bad line calls in a game was just normal. But let say there is more than that & the line judges never been removed, that is totally unacceptable  Enough of tolerate from baddy players in the current circuit, from CO to HKO to SEA Games, its already started to become a "trend" , which may harm the sport. I believe if LCW , TH, PG , Sony or any top players start to walk out in protest, BWF can't do anything much.. Just to fine them.
I don't think they will get banned or any other disciplinary actions.. BWF knows the current circuit needs them, just as they need China players..

Bad calls not only happen in badminton.. i heard there is many bias calls toward's Thai opponents thruout some Seagame's events. Some competitor's even walk out "boycott" their GOLD medal  match and give it to Thailand instead.
That make headline today when the Philippines boxing team boycotts all their finals (maybe 8-9 golds at stake) protesting the alleged biased result in another boxing match whereby the opponent (against a Thai boxer) was not awarded a single point in the whole match.
Boxing (and the likes of gymnastic, figure skating, diving etc) is still using a very subjective point scoring system (unless it is a T.K.O.) that give rise to numerous disputes, that may need a overhaul to the judging criteria.
But badminton's disputes are mainly on bad line calls, that in my opinion, can be relatively easy to overcome, if BWF really want to improve the game.

woh. being biased is one thing but being obviously biased is another. this is not good for boxing in particular and sports in general. that is sad. imagine training your whole life, fighting with all your might and not being awarded a single point for your efforts.

How to fix the situation:
1. Hire linesman/women, umpires, service judges professionally. They are entitled to pay for their services. NO MORE VOLUNTEERS. Volunteerism in professional sports only do more harm than good in the long term.
2. Provide a camera on every corner/ side of the court.
3. Replace any linesman/woman, umpire, service judge who makes a bad call more than once as evidenced by the on-the-spot replayed camera. This is NON NEGOTIABLE....
4. Ban any players who is involved in any match fixing for at least 1 year. If the match fixing is ordered by the coach, ban the coach from accompanying the players while playing for at least 10 years.

:p..Point no. 3 seems to be somewhat contradicting point #1 though. If they hire "neutral", professional linesmen/women, umpires and service judges, what are the chances they will make a bad call more than once??....If they make bad calls more than once, would they be called "neutral" & "professional"??;)..What is the no. of limit, of bad calls, they are allowed??..:p
My advice:
NO match involving judges....No gymnastics, no boxing, no karate, no taek kwondo, no wushu, and the likes....
:p:D..in other words, the players will call whatever they please??..If that happens, wait til the fans, watching the matches, really go berserk..;)
