View Full Version : Heads set to roll after disappointing show by shuttlers in Korat

from The Star Online

IT ended as though the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) did themselves a favour by sending the back-up team to the Korat SEA Games.
The team were totally out of depth against the Indonesian, Thai and Singaporean sides, who were at full strength. And it laid bare the sorry state of the future echelon of our national players.

In the competitions, which ended at the Vongchavalitkul University in Korat yesterday, Malaysia took four bronze medals as losing semi-finalists – their worst-ever performance in the SEA Games series since competing in the sport at the 1961 SEAP Games in Rangoon.

Malaysia had been finalists in at least one of the events, team or individual, over the last four decades.

The absence of top women’s single shuttler Wong Mew Choo and doubles specialist Chin Eei Hui further diluted the strength of the women’s team.
The bronze medallists in Korat were Gan Teik Chai-Lin Woon Fui (men’s doubles), Julia Wong (women’s singles) and the men’s and women’s teams.

Top male back-up shuttler Tan Chun Seang had to pull out because of a wrist injury; Chan Kwong Beng crumbled under pressure; Julia and Lydia Cheah failed to make breakthrough performances; and doubles players Mohd Razif Abdul Latif-Khoo Chung Chiat continued with their inconsistency.

Is the Project 2010-2012 squad’s chief coach Rashid Sidek doing a good job with his two-year-old team? Or does he not have the material to work with?
Rashid agreed that it was a bit of both and added that the future was not as bleak as indicated by the showing in the SEA Games.

“I am as disappointed as anyone else but I am glad my players were given the exposure here. They know where they stand ... not close at all against the top players from other countries in the region,” he said.

“I have ordinary players in my team. The good ones, among them Tan Boon Heong and Hoon Thien How, had already been promoted to the senior team.
“The current batch have the talent and some of them have showed progress but it has been gradual. I am hoping for more time to make them special.”

Rashid agreed that it had been a learning experience for him too as a coach responsible for grooming a solid team for the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2012 Olympics.

“Sometimes, players take advantage when the coach is not too strict. I will no longer tolerate indiscipline. I will crack the whip next year. There have been several incidents this year but I have let the errant players off the hook with just warnings,” he said.

At the Hong Kong Open two months ago, several of his players who were eliminated went to Macau without even informing him. They chose to have a good time elsewhere even though their team-mate, Lim Kenn, was still playing in the competition.

“Some of the players, among them Mohd Arif (Abdul Latif) and Lydia, will be dropped to accommodate those from BJSS (Bukit Jalil Sports School). Hopefully, there will be more quality performances next year.”

The writing is also on the wall for two senior players who featured in the Korat Games. Yeoh Kay Bin and Kuan Beng Hong certainly could have done much better.
But they have made themselves look as though they are now just good to serve as sparring partners for the national team and not to carry the challenges for honours.

1) In the 1st place, isnt Arif & Lydia with BJSS ? Lydia said in the interview that next year she will be promoted to back-up squad, i.e. Rashid Sidek's squad. Isnt Arif the best MS player from BJSS? He lost Chen Long in World Junior finals(or is it Asia Junior). I think the reporter misquoted Rashid.
So, why should they be dropped ? There are other players who havent havent made much headway as junior players, they should be dropped 1st.

2) Between YKB, KBH & K Yogendran, YKB is the better one. At least he gave a good fight to Taufik.

3) Our senior MD Gan/Lin? They didnt do well either. Lost tamely to Hendra/Hendri in team event. Lost also straight sets to Kido/Setiawan.

What does this means? Kicking out both of them or wat?
Both of them still look promising to me. Rashid's boys like TCS, Kenn Lim, Beryno wong.... should be the ones to get kicked, they r really gotta get stagnant and rot there, how old r they btw? Ard CJ's age right?

Are you serious?? Drop TCS? At the moment, I think TCS is our hope from the squad (others would join him I'm very sure). Can you name anyone else if they were dropped? Arif and Lydia are very promising too. But they have a long way to go. To drop TCS, Kenn etc now is quite rubbish?
As yannie said, they are the only promising players that we have now.

So please, give them some time. They'll make it. Besides, (I said this sooooo many times already), the team's name is Project 2010-2012..ok?
Two years more. Please support them. Don't only praise when they won tournaments and curse them when they didn't perform.

And what do you expect from junior team when INA, Thai and SIN sent their senior team. We know from the start our juniors can't win the gold. At least they get good exposure.

Btw, I fully support Rashid's decision: crack the whip!! If they don't have discipline, then useless lah to be in the national team.

Imagine if the other MS players were dropped.
Then, in Thomas Cup 2008:

1st singles: Lee Chong Wei
2nd singles: Lee Chong Wei
3rd singles: Lee Chong Wei

Cheh...

Yannie, not all news stories have byline i.e. reporter's name. Only comments have, I've checked, hard copy of The Star also dont have name. I dont think it's the regular sports reporter.

Should be Arif & Lydia Cheah promoted to Project 2010-2012. If they're out, should be promoted straight to senior team , not dropped. Weird comment, since Arif & Lydia still in BJSS.

Cos there are others...... you know them better, the non-performing ones.

LOL Thomas Cup 2008
1st Singles : LCW
2nd Singles : WCH
3rd Singles : Lee CS, Roslin Hashim.

Mr yoyo Hafiz better stay at home.

zqloy, Tan CS is most promising MS player in Rashid's squad, winning satellite events. The others, ziltch, nothing.
He's hard working and knows where he stand. Cant compare China with Msia, Msia have system. After 18 yrs old, then only enter back-up squad.
Only if very good, then promote to senior. TBH/Hoon are exception to the rule.

MD- Mohd Razif/Khoo are improving but currently senior MD already have 6 pairs. Maybe Chan PS/Chang PH, one will be roped in to partner Hoon.

3rd singles: Chong Li Qun

Nope still not convinced hey hv what it takes, or maybe Rashid is the 1 needs to get dropped .
All of the 2010-2012 boys r still struggling to get past qualifying round, while CJ is winning titles already. Either they r that bad or Rashid is the one failing to get the job done.

No need to drop lah. Depends on Azalina lor... they all should know if the seniors didn't go, cannot expect much from the young boys. How to win? What record they have against the likes of Indonesian? Only 1 or 2 may perhaps give a fight but expecting 100% hit rate miracle is crazy la... Maybe should try to change coach.MJs have benn under Rashid for a few years but not much results seen, so should try to give other coach handle maybe will produce something different, some eye-opener results and also results that can keep certain people mouth shut.

Its difficult for Rashid to focus on a single player as there's a bunch of kids need the attention. So, when there's no focus on an individual player, its very difficult to find 'the one' to come up the ranks. Its just being fair to Rashid. If he gets to focus on an individual, then perhaps, he can groom whoever 'the one' is. If you look at Misbun's focus on LCW, that's the result you'll get. Ie. better results. I mean in terms of reaching top 5 or even top 10. Faham? or Bisa?

To meiying,

It is not easy to get new coaches to train them. It is because we are shortage of local coaches to train them. We cannot blame coaches because they have so many shuttlers under their wings to train. Most importantly, give these young Malaysia juniors to learn from experience beside that it is the first time they played in the Sea Game. I agreed with you that maybe Rashid Sidek will drop 1 of the project 2010 players to accommodate Arif and Lydia. Arif and Lydia are potential players whom the country should groom.

Dear George,

I agreed with you. According to BAM, they are sending this second team to Korat because they want to expose the players to the high level competition like Sea Game. They even do not target any medals for this outings. Even at first, they wanted to send women second team but after the discussion with MSN, they include WMC and WPT name into the list as the two woman shuttlers have opportunity to win gold. Unfortunately, they were injured. I believe that MSN will look on this matter before making any decision. If we want to win gold, I believe BAM will send the 1st team instead of 2nd team.

Dear members,

I hope that we do not speculate this issue until we get the confirmation from the coach and BAM. Definitely, there will be a meeting before they axed down players like happened before. Let's wait and see the outcome. I read the paper yesterday and I agreed with you that there is no reporter name on the article. I believe that the serious article like this should have the reporters name.

Dear extremenanpowe,

I believe that MSN or even Malaysia Sports Minister will view the case in a fair way before passing judgement. This is because that they are already been informed that Malaysia ( BAM) are sending juniors to the Sea Game. In the interview with RTM, Datok Azalina had said that it is good to give exposure to the young as it is a good asset for the future of the country and not only depend on the seniors. Even she gave examples that we cannot always depend to LCW, KKK & TBH, WMC and other seniors to wiin gold for us. It is a good exposure for my juniors. Badminton is better than silat compare to medal tally as silat have 7 world champions compare to us.

Talking about our youngster Arif Latif, I dont think he has the talent to make a great player. I watched the Youth Final (Arif vs Chen Long, the tall CHN guy). Arif is good defensively but he lacks of powerful smashing and height. I believe that he will be a msia top player but not as good as LCW or Taufik.

Give Rashid more time to train the juniors, and I'm sure Msia is no lack of resources to search for the next LCW :)

We have to show more tolerance towards Rashid becoz he is caught in the middle of war. In his roles, he has to find the hidden gem among the juniors and once he has identified the next LCW, poooffff... he/she is recruited or promoted to the senior team. KKK and TBH are good examples, but good ones :)

It takes time to train the next LCW and we should give him more time to polish the juniors. BAM is doing the right thing to prioritize the juniors over the "back-up seniors" (YKB, KBH, etc...). In fact, those "seniors" should be demoted to be sparring players ONLY. BAM should send the juniors for GP or even SS tourneys, if budget allows.

Remember, Taufik isnt a world champ overnite. We should be proud of our own resources, unlike certain country, they go other countries to scout for young talents (at very young age) and recruit them under their banner.:rolleyes: Not a joke, neither humiliating, but aint proud either ;)

Not to make fun or anything, but you actually believe what they say to the press? Of course Rashid must say we can win gold, that was when WMC, ChinEH was not injured.

When it comes to dealing with the press, there's the real truth, the PR truth (what we tell the press). The real truth and PR truth are 2 different things. Take the PR truth with lots of salt.

Suggestion for BAM :
Who should be dropped from the Elite Team :
1. K.Yogendran
2. Kuan Beng Hong
3. Yeoh Kay Bin
They have been occupying the slots here for too long, yet no results and even bring disaster for MAS in team events before as in the case of KBH in TC.

Who to be promoted into Elite Team from Backup Team
1. Tan Chun Seang - The only player capable of producing some results for MAS in VERY NEAR FUTURE
2. Chong Wei Feng - need to be sparring along with the seniors more frequently for grooming into excel ASAP
3. Chong Li Qun - Same as CWF as above
4. Mohd Arif Latif (his style is more like LCW -- with strong defensive skills but need to polish up his smashing power ; it can be done by training regularly with the seniors)

Who to be promoted from BJSS into Backup Team
1. Kuan Kam Chung
2. Teo Kok Siang:cool:
3. Tan Aik Quan:cool:

BJSS students and teachers pass with flying colours

SOME of the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) athletes were busy with their examinations in the one month leading to the Korat SEA Games. But they still achieved good results......

The BJSS' badminton players – Mohd Arif Abdul Latif and Lydia Cheah – will be promoted to the back-up squad under the charge of Rashid Sidek next year and there is hope that the duo will make great progress to become top players in the country.
With BJSS being the catalyst to nurture potential talent for the country, Malaysia will continue to shine in the coming SEA Games.

Contradictory eh? Anyway, this info should be correct. the previous one is misquoting Rashid Sidek.
