View Full Version : Malaysian Open 2008 - Day 2 - Jan 16 - First Round
vching 01-15-2008, 03:24 AM Malaysian Open Day 1 Predictions (http://thebadmintonblog.blogspot.com/2008/01/malaysian-open-day-1-predictions.html)
The start of the first Super Series in 2008 has some pretty interesting encounters
Zhu Lin vs. Yip Pui Yin
The reigning world champion Zhu Lin takes on big smasher Yip Pui Yin. While Zhu Lin has failed to reproduce the form that got her her crown in Kuala Lumpur, Yip Pui Yin has also failed to live up to her reputation. She easily lost the first round match in Hong Kong last year to the little known Canadian Anna Rice. However, all the statistics I have to work with are woefully out of date, and both Zhu and Yip might be on opposite sides of the spectrum. Its hard to write predictions for the first round match of the first tournament of the year, and we'll see what happens tomorrow. However, Zhu Lin should be able to continue defending her title. and defeat Yip in a 2 set match, and Yip would do well to stretch the Chinese to a third.
Taufik Hidayat vs. Park Sung Hwan
Taufik Hidayat today commented that the Malaysian Open title is not something he is eying for this year. However, one would be foolish to dismiss Taufik. While Park, Korea's top rated Men's Singles player hs been quite impressive lately, Hidayat would most probably claim this match in 2 tight sets.
Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong vs. Joko Riyadi/Hendra Gunawan
A tough opening match for Malaysian hotshots Koo and Tan. The first seed and the world number 1 Malaysians are out to please their loyal fans, and Koo and Tan should easily sweep past the Indonesians in 2 sets. I predict that Koo and Tan will face no difficulties (hopefully, I won't jinx them) until the meet Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng in the semifinals.

leonardklh 01-15-2008, 08:40 AM why xie xing fang give an walkover to cheng shao chieh?????
badMania 01-15-2008, 09:21 AM Matches involving Team INA (including Djarum's sole representative)
MEN'S SINGLES
Taufik Hidayat [6]vs Park Sung Hwan -- another early round match against Park Sung Hwan...and I think Taufik should take this one again.
Andrew Smith vs Simon Santoso -- Simon should also progress, but, he will face either Taufik or Park on Thursday.
Andre Kurniawan Tedjono vs Eric Pang -- Andre has increasingly become more matured in his game and a first round win tomorrow will serve to boost his confidence in this new season.
Lee Hyun Il vs Sony Dwi Kuncoro [5] -- a tough match for both players and I fear Sony might go out.
WOMEN'S SINGLES
Pia Bernadet Zebadiah vs Kanako Yonekura -- Pia has done the hard job of qualifying for the main draw and 2220 valuable ranking points in her coffer which means she will go up to the top 60. Another win will be a bonus for her.
MEN'S DOUBLES
Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong [1] vs Hendra Gunawan/Joko Riyadi -- a terrible draw yet again for AG/Joko (and next week too), so, they might go out in R32 for the coming forthnight.
Luluk Hadiyanto/Alvent Yulianto vs Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari/Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif -- probably the match of the round and it will be an exciting match. The MAS pair has an edge.
Fang Chieh-Min/Lee Sheng-Mu vs Tony Gunawan/Candra Wijaya [4] -- a tricky match against the fast-improving Chinese-Taipei pair. But, Tony/Candra should take this one.
Hoon Thien How/Tan Wee Kiong vs Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan [2] -- a tricky one too for the World Champion after an astonishing year-end for them.
WOMEN'S DOUBLES
Vita Marissa/Lilyana Natsir [8]vs Johanna Persson/Elin Berglom -- a breeze for the 8th seed.
Carina Mette/Birgit Overzier vs Rani Mundiasti/Endang Nursugianti -- a tricky one for Rani/Endang as always against the veteran GER pair. Hopefully, they can take this one.
Jo Novita/Greysia Polii vs Nina Vislova/Valeria Sorokina -- ditto for Jo/Greysia...the Russian is improving very fast.
MIXED DOUBLES
David Lindley/Suzanne Rayappan vs Mohd Rijal/Greysia Polii -- Rijal/Greysia are finally back after a 5 mths absence since the WC 2007 (which was also held in KL last year). A tough match against the improving ENG pair and with Greysia's experience, they should edge out a win in rubber-set.
Flandy Limpele/Vita Marissa [4] vs Joachim Fischer Nielsen/Britta Andersen -- with Zheng Bo/Gao Ling's withdrawal, the path is opened for Flandy/Vita to progress to the Final.
Devin Lahardi/Lita Nurlita vs Kristof Hopp/Birgit Overzier -- a tough match is in store for Devin/Lita. It will be good if they can win this one.
Fang Chieh-Min/Cheng Wen-Hsing vs Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir [2] -- a tricky match and the last time these two pairs meet, it ended in a rubber-set.
Tommy Susanto 01-15-2008, 03:12 PM Oh no XAY of SIN has done it again.....no not in the 1st round but in the qualifying round:crying::crying::crying:
madbad 01-15-2008, 03:49 PM They've already withdrawn their WS and XD #1 seeds, so why not pull their WS#1 seed too. Reasons genuine or suspicious? Add to that LD never even entered–he would have been the #1 seed in MS...
samuel882 01-15-2008, 05:27 PM MEN'S DOUBLES
Hoon Thien How/Tan Wee Kiong vs Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan [2] -- a tricky one too for the World Champion after an astonishing year-end for them.
I read the draw from tournament software, it indicated that MK/HS will be up against the Brits pair of Robert Adcock/ Robin Middleton in the last match of today.
While Wee Kiong/Thien How somehow were pitted against their senior Choong TF/Lee WW in the first round

Hmm....I thought its Kido/Hendra against Q2, who should be Hoon/Tan
samuel882 01-15-2008, 05:56 PM Couple of exciting matches in today's first round fixtures.
1. Sudket / Pattapol vs Sakamoto/ Ikeda - a very tough opener for the Thais pair, it will be a 3 set triller.
I've ask all my frans who will bumped into stadium today to give FULL support to Sudket :p
2. Chan Chong Ming/Chew Choon Eng vs Lee Jae Jin/ Hwang Ji Man -
- The Korean holds some slight edge over the host "Reformed" pair -- in terms of experince in handling pressure on a Super Series Event.
CCM stamina is in doubt after having to gone through 2 matches in Qualifying -- Especially the one with Bona/ Ahsan. If the match go into decider, my pick will be on the fitter Korean.
3. Gan Teik Chai/ Lin Woon Fui vs Jung Jae Sung/ Lee Yong Dae
- The Korean Pair should have breezed past this "Fragile" MAS Pair - the weakest combination among MAS Elite MD Squad.
- Don't forget Lee Yong Dae gota lots female fans in the stadium to cheered him up every time he is in action ;)
4. Tazari/ Fairuz vs Luluk/ Alven
- Based on recent form, MAS pair should win on this one. However, LL/ALV will be a tough nut to bite. A 50-50 match .
nmy3889 01-15-2008, 07:15 PM why xie xing fang give an walkover to cheng shao chieh?????
newspaper stated that xxf had a freak accident yesterday in her hotel...apparently she fell in the bathroom and injured her elbow...so that's abit of luck for wmc?? path to semi finals is clear thanks to the slippery bathroom...:D:D
V3i HoN6 01-15-2008, 07:21 PM The game started, very tight first game between He HB/YY and Keita/Miyuki
V3i HoN6 01-15-2008, 07:34 PM TWk & WKW need to buckle up a bit.
Many exposure by still never go far to like 3rd round or quater.
eaglehelang 01-15-2008, 07:34 PM Msia young XD pair, TWee Kiong/Woon KW already lost to Denmark, Eriksen/Neilsen, in straight sets.
ronnie14 01-15-2008, 07:51 PM goodluck Taufik!
coops241180 01-15-2008, 07:53 PM i think anthony clark is having a bad year... split with robert blair, paired with one of the up and coming (but not that up and coming) lads, and to top it all - he and donna kellog seem to be freefalling thru the rankings - they were top 10 at some time last year - even making it to the final of the WC (albeit losing to robertson/emms in the final) since then it's all been backwards for them. and tony in particular..
they lost to one of the PFQ's in three!!
ah well
daniel2323 01-15-2008, 08:20 PM OMG... fLAVI LOST...!!
toooo baddddd :(

ah well
I was wondering why Clark/Blair split, they were quite good together.
I think the WC you're talking about is 2005? Back then most prob due to Rexy being there as coach.
coops241180 01-15-2008, 08:27 PM errr yeah what happened there? flandy and vita were 4th seeds! and they lose spectacularly to the relatively unknown joachim fischer nielsen and britta andersen - i know britta has played with most of the top men in denmark - but not seen her with this other dane. well done to them for making an upset :)
coops241180 01-15-2008, 08:30 PM I was wondering why Clark/Blair split, they were quite good together.
I think the WC you're talking about is 2005? Back then most prob due to Rexy being there as coach.
wow - was it really that long ago?
i thought they won it the year after rexy left - cause nathan sprained his ankle while at the anaheim ones (that was 2005 wasn't it?) then it was madrid in 06? i can't remember at all...
badMania 01-15-2008, 08:41 PM What a disastrous start to the Malaysia Open Super Series
Mohd Rijal/Greysia Polii lost in straight sets 20-22, 6-21 to David Lindley/Suzanne Rayappan. The ENG pair has been improving steadily and upsetted Nova/Butet last year.
Meanwhile, Flandy Limpele/Vita Marissa lost unexpectedly to Joachim Fischer Nielsen/Britta Andersen 12-21, 15-21.
Louisa 01-15-2008, 08:47 PM XD between Mas and USA is going crazy...
Louisa 01-15-2008, 08:49 PM finally our junior made it 30:29...
badMania 01-15-2008, 08:50 PM The first match this year to finish in 30-29....as Howard Bach/Eva Lee lost to the stubborn MAS young pair of Mohd Razif Abdul Latif/Chong Sook Chin 21-14, 18-21, 29-30. The US pair threw away 4-5 match pts and was leading 29-28, only to blow it. What a match!
Misty100 01-15-2008, 08:51 PM Amazing, another marathon 30 points in XD which MAS won in the rubber against USA. 14:21, 21:18, 30:29
samuel882 01-15-2008, 08:51 PM Wow ! First sudden death of this tournament.
Razif / Chong Sook Chin beat the experience USA pair Howard Bach/ Eva Lee
14-21, 21-18, 30-29

wow, so early morning so much upset dy, Flavi lost in straight game...
wat happened??
george@chongwei 01-15-2008, 09:17 PM omg, zhou mi thrashed her opponent in the 1st set and now are leading far away...
hcyong 01-15-2008, 09:17 PM The first match this year to finish in 30-29....as Howard Bach/Eva Lee lost to the stubborn MAS young pair of Mohd Razif Abdul Latif/Chong Sook Chin 21-14, 18-21, 29-30. The US pair threw away 4-5 match pts and was leading 29-28, only to blow it. What a match!
An exciting match, I would guess. The first ever match I followed live that ended 30-29. I've still yet to watch one with my own eyes.
To get to 30-29, both sides will have in total at least 12 game points. At 20-(less than 20), that's at least one game point. At 21-20 to 29-28, that's exactly 9 game points. And at 29-29, both sides have game points.
So, if the US pair blew 4-5 match points, the Malaysian pair must have blown even more. But the US pair blew the last 2 which must have hurt a lot.

Not exactly unknown. She was a star player in Europe during her recent junior years. But I did not expect her to trouble Li Li, much less beat her.

V3i HoN6 01-15-2008, 10:21 PM Taufik just gave the first game to PSW.

Well I follow badminton pretty avidly but I live in Canada so I dont really know. Everyone seems to dislike Hafiz... just curious why. I was cheering for Chong Wei too cause he's such a good sportsman and I love how he plays;)

Not likely.

Both TM and Wacha are good players.

V3i HoN6 01-15-2008, 10:45 PM Hashim should have no problem in this round.
He's being quite consistent recently.
spchu 01-15-2008, 10:46 PM I am rooting for underdog Sheun Wan instead since Taufik himself said in today's paper that Malaysian Open isnt his priority.
Come on Korea in the rubber set.
BAR73N 01-15-2008, 10:46 PM Finally,,, Taufik won this set :)
anfan2000 01-15-2008, 10:46 PM 22-20 for Hidayat on game 2. :crying::crying:

prothobs 01-15-2008, 10:58 PM THATS IT YAHH!! Canada vs Korea goes to a 3rd
jasonmarc 01-15-2008, 11:03 PM 11-8 Taufik had the edge during interval.... will Park rise to the occassion?
It will depends on TH stamina.....he used to have stamina problem....usually lost in rubber game.....if he has improve his stamina he will win...this..;)
spchu 01-15-2008, 11:06 PM 18-15. Taufik needs 3 to wrap it up and Park needs 3 to draw level.
spchu 01-15-2008, 11:08 PM It's Taufik's game after all 21-16....
spchu 01-15-2008, 11:10 PM Sorry Prothobs looks like Korea will take the rubber at 17-5 now. Canada need a miracle to win the rubber.
ye333 01-15-2008, 11:15 PM Of course that doesn't mean he has climbed back to top ...
Maximum 01-15-2008, 11:18 PM GL & ZTT match starts... haha... Go Go Go
skunklover 01-15-2008, 11:30 PM GL and ZZT lead 18-12
skunklover 01-15-2008, 11:31 PM set point for GL and ZZT
skunklover 01-15-2008, 11:33 PM 21-14 set GL and ZZT
samuel882 01-15-2008, 11:36 PM Another game over for YOYO sibblings :(
badMania 01-15-2008, 11:36 PM Of course that doesn't mean he has climbed back to top ...
I don't think he can last the distance this week. He has already mentioned that Malaysia Open is "not his target". He's aiming and craving for the All-England title (which has missed for various reasons over the past 2 years).
I hope Simon Santoso can beat Taufik Hidayat tomorrow and face Lee Chong Wei for a place in the last four.
samuel882 01-15-2008, 11:38 PM Watch up for Eric Pang, this guy might go far here..
badMania 01-15-2008, 11:44 PM A tough match for Andre Kurniawan Tedjono as expected as it's 18-18 in the rubber-set now. Nervy moments for both players.
samuel882 01-15-2008, 11:45 PM The game was so tense between Andre & Eric
Another Sudden death match on the making?
Hows ur heartbeat doing, Badmania :p
mAlAn 01-15-2008, 11:48 PM Tedjono take the game
22 : 20 in 3rd set
badMania 01-15-2008, 11:48 PM Yes....Andre Kurniawan Tedjono makes it 3 out of 3 for INA Men's Singles players so far as he beat Eric Pang 18-21, 22-20, 22-20. He will face either Chen Yu or Dicky Palyama for a place in the last eight and he has beaten Chen Yu several times before, so, he stands a chance.
His target this year will be to break into the top 10 (hard one though).
badMania 01-15-2008, 11:49 PM The game was so tense between Andre & Eric
Another Sudden death match on the making?
Hows ur heartbeat doing, Badmania :p
Nervy moments, but not as nervous as when the doubles are playing :p
madbad 01-15-2008, 11:49 PM Watch up for Eric Pang, this guy might go far here..
... as far as the 1st round :D:D;)
ye333 01-15-2008, 11:54 PM Simon has been pretty impressive since last year. Andrew Smith is not a weak opponent, so I guess 21:15, 21:7 means something.
It's actually hard to judge when no video is available. But my impression is that recently Taufik's problem is not his stamina, it's his power, speed and agility.
I would prefer a Taufik - LCW clash though, to see how LCW's new style works against the opponent with arguably the best skill currently.

CLELY 01-16-2008, 12:29 AM Chen Yu beat Dicky Palyama in straight sets, 21-12, 21-17 and this Chinese player will challenge Andre K.Tedjono tomorrow, one interesting match...
skunklover 01-16-2008, 12:35 AM EMMS and KELLOG defeats AUGUSTYN and KOSTIUCZYK 21-19, 14-21, 21-16

badMania 01-16-2008, 12:52 AM It will be a tragedy if AG/Joko were to throw this set away, leading 17-9 now.

skunklover 01-16-2008, 12:58 AM 3 posts............same time twice in a row....KOO/TAN lead 3-0 2nd set
badMania 01-16-2008, 12:58 AM The Swedish pair leads 11-9 at the interval of the second set

carine 01-16-2008, 01:01 AM kkk lost 1st set already???
ya,lost 1st set ady.....
eaglehelang 01-16-2008, 01:01 AM An exciting match, I would guess.
Hiyaaa, 1st set KKK/TBH lost to Joko/Hendra, now only wake up... slow starters as usual.
HCyong, Razif/Chong are Msia back-up XD, young pair, only 20/19 years old I think. + they focus more on MD & WD respectively. Sure exciting, must ask those at the stadium how it went.
madbad 01-16-2008, 01:01 AM Sigh...when will these kinda fans grow up :o
Don't call them "fans" because a true fan will support their heroes through thick and thin.:rolleyes:
robin7 01-16-2008, 01:01 AM Geez, Vita/Butet are still neck-to-neck with the Swedish pair....at 7-7 in the second set.
The tomboys are struggling...
Oldhand 01-16-2008, 01:02 AM koo-fan won't be happy with koo-tan ;)
badMania 01-16-2008, 01:03 AM The tomboys are struggling...
Unexpected really...but Vita lost her XD match this morning
Oh man...they again trailed 15-19, despite leading 15-13
badMania 01-16-2008, 01:04 AM The MAS pair is leading 11-9. I think they will take the second set.
badMania 01-16-2008, 01:04 AM 16-20 again....and its just following the pattern of the first set  And Vita/Butet lost the second set 17-21.
madbad 01-16-2008, 01:05 AM Wow, the Swedish pair took the 2nd game 21-17. What's happening with Vita and Butet??:confused:
ronnie14 01-16-2008, 01:06 AM :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D you muz b new here then.
i agree :) totally.. hafiz can be a disappointment..
madbad 01-16-2008, 01:06 AM Joko and Hendra are keeping within striking distance of KKK/TBH, down 11-15
badMania 01-16-2008, 01:07 AM Joko and Hendra are keeping within striking distance of KKK/TBH, down 11-15
Unless they can win a string of 3-4 straight points, it will be difficult to steal the second set from Koo/Tan. We'll see how they fare in the rubber-set.
carine 01-16-2008, 01:08 AM Koo-Tan leading 17-13 now
gidong 01-16-2008, 01:08 AM ok i c some hope there 17-13 .. AMEN ..
ronnie14 01-16-2008, 01:08 AM kkk/tbh, wake up! d whole nation is hoping la weyh..
spchu 01-16-2008, 01:10 AM Koo Tan, please live up to your top seed billing.
carine 01-16-2008, 01:10 AM Koo-Tan take other 2 pints to end 2nd game
badMania 01-16-2008, 01:10 AM More smash winners from the MAS pair in the second set...and thats the difference.
eaglehelang 01-16-2008, 01:10 AM The Swedish pair leads 11-9 at the interval of the second set
KKK/TBH game tension-lah, wake up Speedy fierce one/Tall lighting
Badmania, the Sweden WD strong kah?? Liliyana/Marissa having prob with them or cos both have to play XD, tired?
madbad 01-16-2008, 01:10 AM No different in the rubber in the INA/SWE encounter. Very tight at 6-6
skunklover 01-16-2008, 01:10 AM Koo/Tan lead 19-16
robin7 01-16-2008, 01:10 AM The first match this year to finish in 30-29....as Howard Bach/Eva Lee lost to the stubborn MAS young pair of Mohd Razif Abdul Latif/Chong Sook Chin 21-14, 18-21, 29-30. The US pair threw away 4-5 match pts and was leading 29-28, only to blow it. What a match!

So, if the US pair blew 4-5 match points, the Malaysian pair must have blown even more. But the US pair blew the last 2 which must have hurt a lot.
From the stats, the US pair wasted 7 match points while Malaysia won at the 5th match point.
carine 01-16-2008, 01:11 AM game point for Koo-Tan
skunklover 01-16-2008, 01:11 AM Koo/Tan win 2nd set 21-17
carine 01-16-2008, 01:12 AM Koo-Tan took 2nd game
V3i HoN6 01-16-2008, 01:12 AM 21-17 force to rubber set
badMania 01-16-2008, 01:12 AM Second set to the MAS pair, 21-17. We will see which pair breaks away first in the rubber-set.
madbad 01-16-2008, 01:12 AM Interesting all-MAS match up between the vets CTF/LWW and HTH with new partner TWK. 3-3
badMania 01-16-2008, 01:13 AM KKK/TBH game tension-lah, wake up Speedy fierce one/Tall lighting
Badmania, the Sweden WD strong kah?? Liliyana/Marissa having prob with them or cos both have to play XD, tired?
I think they were thrashed before. Uncharacteristic for Vita to lose her XD match so easily today and now being tested to the limit  Or it could just be beginning of the year jitters.
badMania 01-16-2008, 01:14 AM Vita/Butet edge in front 11-9 at the interval of the rubber-set.
V3i HoN6 01-16-2008, 01:14 AM The crowd must be shouting hard by now.
4 Malaysian pairs on action now.
Especially one with KKK/TBH.
gidong 01-16-2008, 01:14 AM wow 4 MAS MD on court in da same time ... hmmm
eaglehelang 01-16-2008, 01:14 AM Meanwhile, Tan BS/Ong SC against the dangerous HK pair Albertus/Yohan
badMania 01-16-2008, 01:15 AM It will be too much if Vita/Butet were to lose the 15-9 lead.
gidong 01-16-2008, 01:15 AM come on KOO TAN ... huhuhuhu
madbad 01-16-2008, 01:16 AM INA tomboys finally put some daylight between themselves and the SWE girls 15-10
eaglehelang 01-16-2008, 01:16 AM The oldies CTF/LWW show age is not a factor, trashing Hoon/Wee Kiong, 12-5, 1st set
gidong 01-16-2008, 01:16 AM PLS KOO - TAN .. 5 all now ... omg
V3i HoN6 01-16-2008, 01:17 AM from 3-3 to 11-4,
