I really hope England doesn't make it lets see Denmark is sure to secure a place in the Thomas Cup..

Well England is the next one on the line it seems with Germany and Holland being the only obstacles for them

The official title of this event is 'Bank BRI Thomas-Uber Cup 2008', after Trans Corp as host broadcaster and local bank BRI (Bank Rakyat Indonesia) have signed MoU about sponsorship agreement.

And there's theme song for TUC/08 titled 'Suara Kemenangan' (Voice of Victory) composed and sung by local alternative rock band Cokelat. One lyric of this song, 'Kau Pahlawan Pantang Menyerah Terus Berjuang Untuk Menang' -- 'You the hero who never give up to continue fighting for win'

Venugopal Mahalingam (Events & Development Manager) who inspected Istora GBK four days ago (5/2/08) together with Selvam Supramaniam (Admin & Marketing Manager) said, basically no problem with the arena except journalist facility/media centre that still need improvement, particularly space capacity.

INA Thomas and Uber squad will play simulation match two times, 29 February/08 and 29 March/08 in Bandung and Batam respectively.

Trans Corp will broadcast series of TUC activity to promote this badminton event in INA, here they are :
- Asian Zone Qualifying of TUC/08, 19 - 24 Feb/08
- Simulation match, 29 Feb and 29 March/08
- TUC 2008 Final Draw, 08 March/08
- Quiz and news info around Istora, 11-18 May/08
- LIVE Matches, 11-18 May/08

--- taken from various sources, Tabloid BOLA/Trans7 website/Astaga.com ---

I think Trans Corp is more serious and exclusive to handle this prestigious bdm event than they did four years ago.

Pretty sure they will do a better job than previous times, with lessons learnt from past experiences.

Not to mention that this is the last time Thomas and Uber Cups are contested in the same venue together ......

All players from TUC participating countries will be invited to join gala dinner (welcome party) at National Monument (MoNas), Central Jakarta on May 10 2008. Taken from the Jakarta Post, here's its news article :

Fri, 02/29/2008 11:56 AM | Sports

The Jakarta administration will welcome Thomas Cup and Uber Cup badminton players in a gala dinner at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta on May 10.

"I think the opening (reception) will be interesting as it will be held for the first time at Monas, instead of hotels," head of the committee at the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) G. Sulistiyanto said here Thursday.

He said all players from 14 participating countries would be invited to join the party. The Thomas Cup, the most prestigious world badminton team competition, and its women's version, the Uber Cup, will take place May 11-18.

Chairwoman of the National Sport Council (KONI) Rita Subowo told the association to be well-prepared both as host and contender.

"Please consider the stadium's capacity and tickets and set clear rules on what supporters should not bring inside," she said during a meeting with PBSI officials at her office.

The government has budgeted Rp 15 billion for the biennial tournament. -- JP

The drawing will be held on 12 March... It was going to be held on 8 March, but due to public holiday (Nyepi) on 7 March (long weekend, yay!) and with other consideration that none of the player will attend the drawing (All England Semis n Final), it will be held on 12 March in Studio Trans TV, 3 pm WIB... Trans TV or Trans 7 will broadcast it live...

Here's the news from bolanews.com:

Putaran Final Piala Thomas-Uber
Undian Minta Diundur

Hi Cecelia
Thanks for posting the information about the price of tickets for the Thomas and Uber Cups.

Do you know if overseas visitors can purchase tickets online?

I am enquiring on behalf of supporters from New Zealand.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Hi, Sue! Sorry, no online ticket facility for foreigner supporters who want to buy ticket via internet. Thomas-Uber Cup tickets is only sold at venue (Istora GBK Senayan). I think as TUC host, INA doesn't create huge promotion for this badminton prestigious event, so disappointed to this condition...Better to wait until end of April/early May whether the organizer will design Official Website or not.

Nice to know you plus New Zealand bdm fans will come to Jakarta...

Wow, this is worse than I thought. Not the ticket prices, but the matches. Preliminary rounds only last 2 days. It is possible one team may have to play 2 matches in a day.

Pre-quarterfinals 1 day, 13 May
Quarterfinals 1 day, 14 May.

Good thing I'm arriving on the 14th ...... :D

..what a bargain!!..Looking at the Finals, about US$7.50 for First Class ticket and about US$15.00 for VIP, per person. About the unavailability for an online ticketing purchase, that's too bad. But for those wanting to go & can't get online tickets, i think it's not a bad idea to have one of the INA BCers help out & reserve your tickets; maybe have the same seating for all BCers in the same area?? Perhaps Hau-ge or Krisna can help reserve/purchase tickets for those in need??..:)

2 years ago there were gaps in plays. Now there is only 8 days of competition (7 for Uber Cup), the shortest ever in the history of the Cup since 1984.

Yep, i think thats another way to make Istora crowded with Jak mania... haha, just kidding... Indo need lots of supporter... Cheaper tickets means Istora will be more crowded, noisy, crazy, n like there's earthquake inside...

Tickets are quite cheap, almost the same with Indonesia SS tickets... But some of my uni friends thought it is still too expensive tho ...

Yeah, fanatic supporters of one local football club will come to Istora. And about ticket price, I have read many comments from INA bdm fans through several discussion arenas, said the ticket price is expensive because the organizer doesn't provide season ticket (tiket terusan), only daily ticket so they must think twice to watch all TUC matches every day from preliminary until final day.

Compared with music concert tix which spending hundred thousand even one million rupiahs, of course TUC ticket is so cheap.

From media, it said the TUC tickets will be sold one day before tournament day of each round started (10 - 18 May 2008). You also can get TUC ticket in another way, buy voucher at Mal Artha Gading 1st floor (North Jakarta) or BRI headquarter (Sudirman). BRI call centre : 14017 for further information.

While we're all waiting and counting down towards the opening Thomas & Uber Cup matches, here's a bit of entertainment....Very amusing.Enjoy!!!:):p;)(some of you guys have probably seen this video; taken from a TV show called "Extravaganza")

*Sorry, it's in Indonesian. But since most, if not the majority, of the BCers understand Malay/Indonesian, i'll just share it here.
For those who don't understand their conversations, basically they were talking about the basics of badminton (and history of the Thomas Cup):

-First, they talked about the shuttlecock, the origin of it, the types of materials used in earlier playing days (which included nose hair, armpit's hair).
-The second part, they talked about the racket. The types of rackets used for beginners and intermediates.
-The third part is about how to hold the racket.
-The fourth part is about how to serve. Including Rudy Hartono's famous serve.
-The fifth part is about how to execute a certain shots, ie. clear, dropshots and trick shots etc. The guy explained the main purpose of a trick shot is simply to trick your opponent, eventhough you lose a point to your opponent. It's all about style.
-The sixth part is about the way they call line-shots that are in and out; and why they used certain hand signs to call them.
-The last part is about how to train their agility. But they were introducing a "dangdut" singer...Thomas Gorgi(sp.)?!?!..
...Enjoy!!:):p;)

Hi, so happen that I will be in Jakarta for meetings next week so I will defintely go for the evening matches..especially M'sia vs Korea on the 12/5. Instead of queueing up for the ticket is there any other better way to get ticket? I wanted to buy the VIP seat for 12/5 13/5 and 14/5 if possible.
