Just curious how cold weather affects badminton racquets and strings. I usually play after work and leave my badminton bag in my trunk until then. Should I be concern?

I put my rackets outside of their bags. The temperature in my house is around 10 degrees celcius.Up to today, there's nothing wrong.Neither the strings. But the strings became crispier.Would it affect them, esp the rackets?

What someone told me once is after a change of temperature, leave the racquets to adjust to the court temperature for about 15 minutes to prevent cracking. Not sure if this is true, but I just do it anyways

well, from the time it takes to get changed, stretch properly, then I don't think this advise will be an issue. Thanks GunBlade. On another note, where do you play?

10'C (50+ 'F) is not the greatest condition, but should be fairly safe for the rackets. However, car trunk usually is extreme, whether it's too hot or too cold, especially if live in Canada. Highly NOT recommend. ;)

I would say safest thing to do is to just bring it indoors with you.

I walk to my local gym and lately it's been freezing (-30 something ceclius pre-windchill). By the time I get there my racquet is really really cold. I've definitely been concerned. I usually rub the racquet and strings a bit to help bring them up to temperature and it seems to warm up fairly quickly. I haven't had any problems yet. I would not want to leave them outside all day though.

In Canada they used to sell these pouches that would could put in your coat or gloves that would stay warm for hours. They weren't reusable though so they maybe would not be very practical.

dear SH..don't u think that a racket warmer r somehow just some sort of seasonal business?

The strings might get thermal stress going from extreme cold to room temperature in a few minutes. I have heard of friends who put their gear in the trunk all day in the dead of winter and take them out to play only to snap their strings during warm-up rallies. I would definitely bring them in with me even if I am no longer in Edmonton where it goes down to a crispy cozy -40C:p. You lucky folks, you:D!!!

best way is to leave ur rackets @ ROOM TEMPERATURE..this will keep ur strings from drying up and becoming crisp..this also helps the graphite not to warp

deffinetly would not leave them in your car with that temperature, for the past 3 days here it has been really cold with monday being near -40, tuesday around -30 and same with wednesday, i have had to train and coach each of those days and traveling outside with my racquets has not been to plesent well the only thing i have made sure is that i let them warm up for 15 or 20 minutes before i start training, coaching i dont worry to much cause i use just other random racquets i have for that just a NS6000 lol.

But yes do the safe thing and just bring them inside with you.

I think it's okay if the temperature isn't too cold, it's been -40! At my place xD
If it's been cold for awhile, and it goes into a warmer place, then... It will expand? :P You know... Cuz when your cold... And go to a warmer... Place, it expands.

So if the strings expand, the tension drops, right ? :crying:

Toronto does get cold during winter and leaving the racket in the truck is a no no. The extreme sub-zero temperatures can affect your string and racket frame even if you had them inside a thermal bag. As others mentioned, always remember to let the racket warm back up to room temperature before using it.

yup with wind chill and everything it might have been a little higher here than that even, but yeah it was pretty cold. hum yes i think you are right that when it warms up it will expand and well that could cause problems.
