Probably me too, but not during preliminaries.

Only q-finals onwards. Irrespective of MAS performance.

Anybody can help on best places for accommodation and tickets? The Century Park hotel closest to Senayan is sure to be full.

Hau-ge, indra & taufik-ist!...And proposing our Krisna to be the "main host"..hehe:p :);)

Hmm, my ex-boss's beloved Hotel Mulia is already full, that must be the tournament hotel, then.

Atlet Century Park is still available. I will stay there, easier for food since Plaza Senayan is only walking distance away. Since it is not far, will walk to Istora too.

Anybody anywhere want to share rooms with me? I am planning to be there from 14th onwards. Crossover pre-quarterfinals or Q-finals should start by then.

Really? Hotel Mulia is the tournament hotel? Thats quite surprising, they usually use The Sultan (used to be Hilton) for every international tournament held in Senayan (including the 04 TUC and Indo SS), except during Asian Cup last year...

Hopefully I won't be too busy during the tournament so I'll be able to watch it everyday... :D *nabung, nabung, nabung...*

I don't know for sure if they are using Hotel Mulia, but could be since rooms there are full in May. Makes sense since it is one of the closer hotels within Senayan. Yup, everything that is within my walking distance is close .... :D

azabaz_ipoh, mebbe I will handle the duties to Hau-ge, he has a blackberry too, and it is his country that is hosting the event. I'm a tourist, must act like one. :D

From BWF website announcement (TUC section), the official hotel for upcoming TUC/08 is Hotel Sultan (previously Hilton Hotel). Yeah, the alternative shopping centre near Istora are the high class PS (Plaza Senayan) and SenSi (Senayan City). Hmm, looks like this area is so familiar to u...

Of course, didn't I tell u that I've been here many times. Mainly for work  nowadays.

Always tried to stay within walking distance of my objective. Not too keen on taking drives unless no choice, the drivers in Jakarta are "so exceptional". It just so happened that my previous company has a subsidiary with HQ in Panin Bank Building, so I stayed in Century Park on most occasions.

Azabaz, Hau-ge's illness has given him "divine inspiration" in MO. Now instead of running away, he only needs shake his head and look up ...... or maybe he was just wary of Ants and Fastdrop sitting beside ..... :D

so you used to go there for pleasure before huh? :)

yeah, taking a drive not always a good choice. even in malaysia. taxi drivers tend to charge you exorbitant fees if they know you are not a local or even a KLites.

i hope the divine inspiration helps him. however, it does not help with the running commentary if he decided to take your place. hehehehe. maybe he thought he better stay or he would have missed winning points like he did before. :)

Looking at the duration (11-18 May), it seems to be more compressed than the 2004 and 2006 timetable.

I suppose this is close to the planned event timetable:-

11-13 May - Preliminary group phase (3 teams per group, 4 groups per Cup)
14 May - Crossover pre-q-finals (2nd and 3rd placed teams only)
15 May - Q-finals (crossover winners vs group champs)
16 May - Semifinals, also known as my birthday ;)
17 May - Uber Cup Final
18 May - Thomas Cup Final

Or they could have 17 May as rest day, 18th May afternoon session Uber Cup Final and evening session Thomas Cup Final.

In which case, my target is to arrive by 15 morning. 14 is possible but might be objectionable by my boss. Esp since I plan to be back at the office on Tuesday 20th.

Okay abedeng, no wonder that you really understand about Jakarta including the drivers attitude and don't forget traffic jam. Host Broadcaster is promoting TUC now with countdown display on top-left corner of TV screen (TransTV and Trans7). Hopefully, the TUC/08 will be success since many INA peoples generally don't know/care about this sport event!

So Loh, you coming too? Good, then I don't need to bother about buying a camera, might as well use yours. Will help you carry the tripod, though. :D

I am flying in 15th morning flight(yup, have decided not to bother with X-over pre-quarterfinals, never understood the need for X-overs), should arrive before noon and hopefully before the 1st session of that day.

Going back on Wesak day, Air Asia only has the 8:10 am flight left on "cheap sale". Other flights available but 2 to 3 times more expensive.

Staying at Atlet Century Park Senayan. If anyone wants to share, pls holler. Max occupancy = 3 but extra bed is extra charge.

Taufik-ist, CLELY, and INA forummers, hope to see u there ........ :D

Don't worry about language. Best shopping areas are basically our backyard, from Plaza Senayan all the way to Semanggi via Jendral Sudirman Road ...... but with Loh's tripod around, we can't be expected to walk anymore to Semanggi for a good dinner, do we? :D

I just hope there are no demos planned for that week, in a few of my previous visits, tyres were burning and uni students were demonstrating. Traffic was at a standstill the whole day. Well, that's part of real democracy, alive and well ......

You can check on Air Asia website, prices are depending on bookings. Remember fuel surcharge, admin fee, airport tax in Jakarta is not added in. My grouse is that we are leaving on Vesak Day, therefore Air Asia prices for Vesak Day flights go up accordingly.

2) Hotel is right beside Senayan Sports Complex gates. Walking distance 15-30 minutes, depending on tripod load. Or we can take taxi, but they will go the long way.

Priced at USD 75 for 3 pax, USD 55 for 2 pax. Includes breakfast. And the Hotel can make arrangements for pickup from Airport. Loh and I share one room, can still fit one more.

Mr Loh, u as a Singaporean should experience this, something even Malaysians have not seen on a wide scale since 1974 when our ex-DPM led a massive student crowd against the Government.

INA demonstrations can last for days, and their planning and timing is quite good. Mass protests can be made to happen throughout all INA major cities simultaneously.

Fortunately, my movement plans are based on walking distances, only subject to tripod weight and competition schedule.

Yup, Atlet (that's Bahasa Indonesia for Athletes) Century Park, Senayan. Right beside Senayan Sports Complex, can enter via side entrance and walk to Istora if u and your heavy camera are up to it.

The good thing about this hotel is that it's secluded, out of the busy and demo prone Jendral Sudirman Road (which is INA's version of Orchard Road or Bukit Bintang Golden Triangle). And did I mention only 300 yards from Plaza Senayan?

Eagle, come, come. By all means take another room even for yourself alone, if u don't have enough dough I'm sure Uncle Loh is willing to pay for a "caddy" carrying his tripod. :D

It is not the offloading that is the problem, it's the company that keeps bugging you everyday even on off days ...... one would have thought I was the company. Had to answer no less than 17 phone calls during MO evening sessions.

Unless tripods have gotten heavier the past 10 years, it's long & bulky but carry for 30 min should be ok...

No need VIP card .... yes I do get a bit better than published rate, but that's under my old company's INA-subsidiary-company rate.

Generally I would say the hotel staff in Jakarta are superior to those in KL in the way they treat their guests. Everyone, and that includes the gardener greets you respectfully. Even security is better, all cars are checked and bags scanned.

Only two Malaysian hotels I know enforce this. Hilton and Le Meridien in KL Sentral.

Ants, take note of INA tax, 21%. Those rates exclude tax.

If u wanna pay above USD80 per nite in Jakarta, Hotel Mulia would be worth it, so too JW Marriott. Maybe not the Sultan.

Eagle, cannot compare Medan to Jakarta. This huge metropolis is more than equal to KL and Singapore, bar the traffic.

thanks for the info... kah kah, I thought you all already know. That's why I ask how much is one room and not whether can share room with you guys:D. (tit, tit, tit... count, count...)hmmm, looks like out of budget.

Azabaz, want to go, bring your saudara mara?:)

(tit tit tit, tit tit.....)aiya, out of budget for me too. hahahahaha

alamak (loose translation : oh no!), abedeng tak (no) gentleman la (malaysian favourite add ons) if you let a lady carry the heavy stuff. hehehehe

Hey, Uncle Din, you volunteered to carry the 'heavy' tripod. Now you suggested to Eagle to be your caddy. That means you become Tiger Din, the millionaire paymaster! :D

But having said that, I would still love to have Miss Ipoh and Eagle join us and the rest of the BC gang in Jakarta!

that's what i thought :D

oh how i wish i could join you guys. we could paint the town red. hahahaha and sleep by 10 cause we cannot stay up too late anymore. body does not permit. hahah :)

No joke, a pro photographer like Loh swear by heavy tripods. The heavier, the better. Otherwise your photos will be shaken, not stirred ..... :p

very dashing i must say. but still a stirred photo will also be equally headache inducing to see. :p

Now abedeng talks like a pro, man! :D

hahahaaah :D;)

It is not the offloading that is the problem, it's the company that keeps bugging you everyday even on off days ...... one would have thought I was the company. Had to answer no less than 17 phone calls during MO evening sessions.

The lovely lady hasn't confirmed her attendance, so now gotta do weight training ....

Told u I retired from cheerleading already, MAS Government decided too late to sponsor official cheerleaders. Luckily they had a dedicated man as Mansor. Now I'm more of an, ahem, neutral observer ...... :D

do like the koreans and take off the battery. :)

concentrate on your biseps and triceps. :D

BCL during the German Open & Japan Open 2005:

He looks more matured & classy nowadays, handsome part, me still dont get & dont care. Yup he's in the tall, fair, some would consider quite handsome category.

Let me put it this way, I dont really bother whether they're handsome or not, so long as they play baddy well. I didnt notice KKK wore Phiten bracelet until a KKK fan mentioned it BC. Didnt notice TBH dyed his hair till another fourmer mentioned it. Didnt notice LCW had 2 rings on his hand till a tv commentator mentioned it...

What you mean grocery warehouse?

You need to have grocery warehouses in your travels, otherwise you will be saddled with hefty hotel meal bills. We are there 4 nights + expending lots of energy carrying "heavy loads". Plus need to be more careful of what we eat and drink here (eg. do not drink from hotel tapwater, not even if it is boiled).

So the smart thing is to stay closest to a possible food and snacks source. Again, walking distance applies. About 300 yards to Plaza Senayan.

That makes Century Park superior to The Sultan.

Oic.. i know what you mean. Im not going to dine in the hotel for sure.. except the breakfast they provided. Yes i am aware of the 21% Tax. Well i will consider Century Park then in terms of hotel quality based on what you mentioned. I've never tried both Hotels. So i will still ask around for reviews of the hotel. Sultan however i get a better rate from the published internet rate since its the Official hotel of the TCUC.

Yes, I know about the official hotel booking rates too, so what are you going under, team official or technical official & press? :p Technical official & press need to use the Grand Deluxe room, more expensive.

You can read the reviews here:-
http://www.asiarooms.com/reviews/indonesia/jakarta-hotel-reviews.html

BTW, non-suite rooms at Century Park does not have a tub in the washroom, only showers. In case that is important to you.

I think its common to have Delays for Budget Airlines. AirAsia also have alot of Delays initially, but once they added their fleets.. not much delay anymore. Infact some flights arrive as early as 30mins before ETA.

Why worry about delays? Even full service airlines have 'em. As airlines maximize the usage of their fleet, all it takes is one aircraft to disrupt a day's schedule.

That's right. Once I got to the hotel and meet up with brother abedeng, everything's gonna be all right! Yeah! :D

Btw, does the hotel pick us up from the airport? That will be excellent for then I wouldn't have to stumble around for directions!

Mr Chan, do I meet you in Jakarta this time? We still have space for another gentleman, according to abedeng, unless Eagle or Miss Ipoh decide to join us the last minute. :D If Miss Ipoh can make it, I'm sure abedeng will be able to request for curtains as he is a very special guest to the staff.

Three months away is actually not a very long time, so please decide NOW!

Hope abedeng is able to take care of the TC tickets before long!
Of course, we shouldn't bother busy Krisna for VIP passes, but Taufik-ist is in Bandung, right? Don't know whether Indra will attend? And of course our new found young friend, Almighty! Actually with such a name, anything is possible with him!

Wow, first time to famous Senayan and possible 'peaceful' demonstrations to add much more to the sound and colour! I'm just counting the days... ;)

Yup, 3 months is a very short time for busy folks .... So Chris, come join us.

The hotel has an arrangement with Silverbird/Bluebird Cab company, to pick us old "Atlets" from the Airport.

We will know about the tickets soon enough. Though I think Loh could do with a VIP pass, gives him freedom to roam with the camera.

No problem, that would mean you get to see the pre-quarterfinals. Unless they are scrapping that format (2nd place vs 3rd place, for a place in q-final vs Group champs).

I prefer the format we use for the qualifying tournament, bottom of group gets no chance.

I've touched the Thomas Cup before, almost got into trouble (you can blame our Cheerleader for that). A few of us escorted that brave chap without knowing what he was going to do, fortunately the authorities were much too happy to be strict with us. AVOID LEMON ON DRINKS

Talking about dirty hands, I saw this short video on You-Tube about a warning NEVER TO TAKE A DRINK WITH A SLICE OF LEMON. It was researched that that piece of lemon will contain so much bad bacteria that was passed on from dirty fingers and finger nails that will make you sick if you drank the liquid, particularly so if the lemon should fall into the drink!

It's the Thomas Cup DNA at work, :p forcing the mind, body and other organs to, ahem, make sacrifices so that our pocket is in position to bring us close to the experience. Our only reward, is to brag that we were part of it.

ohh, that shop, yeah already open for more than 20 years, famous chicken rice shop but I very seldom go there. There are a few 'old fashion furniture' type shops there, must the ones at Jonker walk, near the clock tower, i.e. St Paul's hill. I dont often go to tourist areas, too many ppl.

Next time you all pass by Melaka, I'll p/copy the roadmap book for ya all - detailed one from our Melaka Municipal Council, not the tourist one. Or PM me your address, I mail one down, then you can go round without getting lost.

..you'll have a lot of fun in Jakarta (during the Thomas & Uber Cup), Lauren; if you haven't been there, the country is a bit different but i think you'll find it a unique experience:cool:..If you want, you can tag along & you can join the other BCers who will be there. I heard our Hau-ge(huangkwokhau) will be the unofficial host/"tour guide" for the BCers going to Jakarta;)..Visiting Bali is recommended (since it'll be an hr or so flight from Jakarta), although i don't know how long you'll be staying in INA; or if you'll be traveling with your family....

U want Lauren to commentate while playing, izzit? :p Yeah, I can see how it will probably go ..... "Damn, should have smashed that one in." "Erk, that net looks a bit too high." "What's wrong with the service judge, faulting me like nobody's business!!" "Shxx, the bird flies way too fast!!" .......... :D

Other than ringside commentators, we will have quite a few "sharpshooters", supported by "tripod carrying personnel."

Splendid idea! Better setting for "getting to know you" among BC members! ;)Well we can bring our badminton attire and shoes, but badminton rackets...quite cumbersome and not very nice since we might be mistaken for representing our countries for the TC/UC competition! Wonder whether Krisna has enough spare rackets for all of us to have a friendly match!

We have to draw lots to have smashie54 on our side. :D

Best time would be Saturday and Sunday morning or afternoon. U know, pass time while waiting for the finals. Could even play at night after the finals if we are up to it. But need to allocate enough time and energy for showers and change before we hit the road walking to Istora, with your tripod.
