Hi Ayu,

Jessica 02-29-2008, 11:55 PM Hi Ayu,
I'm seriously considering to go. Would you know where the official hotel is? How about tickets? Thanks and hope to see you there.
I think the official hotel is New York hotel which is very near to the stadium. The tickets can get in the stadium when the date is nearer.Hope to see you there.:)
hcyong 03-01-2008, 02:45 AM Usually Loh will go. I will go if nothing else comes up.
pjswift 03-01-2008, 08:12 AM Hi Ayu,
I'm seriously considering to go. Would you know where the official hotel is? How about tickets? Thanks and hope to see you there.
Jessica is right.New York Hotel is just across the road and I mean exactly that.(Not abedeng's definition of 'just across the road' meaning like 0.5 km!!!)
Tickets are easy to get. Just bring money, not credit card.No need to seriously consider. Not efficient like Spore but nicely disorganised and easygoing atmosphere.

That's quite a description :D
By the way, does anyone have pictures of this venue?

We can't escape from 0.5 km walk if the stadium is part of a huge sports complex ..... :p
Whereas the the JB stadium is within the city area, all by itself.

pjswift 03-04-2008, 09:47 PM Yup, but I thought we are talking about avoiding 0.5 km walks .... :D
I'm looking forward to the 0.5 km walks even if the Century Park Hotel has a gym...then can freely enjoy Rudy's great food tour whole day anytime!
pjswift 03-04-2008, 10:00 PM Not that far also. If you walk, at most it will take you 30 mins.
JB is not exactly a walk-friendly place. The most dangerous part about walking in JB is those motorbike cowboys. There's been not a few fatalities and maiming injuries, reported or otherwise, caused by these snatch thieves. It's important to walk with that awareness in mind but for 30 minutes?Taking a taxi, however ,will take care of the problem, no worries.
Usually Loh will go. I will go if nothing else comes up.
Why don't we go together? Maybe stay a night in JB? :)
Dear pjswift,

Yes, it has a gym and swimming pool too. And unlike New York Hotel, it's not reputed to be haunted ......
Louisa, timing is not right, critical point in one of my projects. At most I can probably only go during semis and final day.

Badminton: Time off for Chong Wei
By RAJES PAUL
PETALING JAYA: Top national men’s singles shuttler Lee Chong Wei (pic) can afford to take it easy.
Now that he is in a comfortable position to be seeded second at the Beijing Olympic Games, the shuttler knows he can afford to take a short break.
http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2008/3/20/sports/s_66lee.jpg And that’s why the world No. 2 may skip the Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) from April 15-20 in Johor Baru.
The ABC is the last tournament that offers Olympic qualifying points. The Olympic qualifying period ends on April 30.
Chong Wei said he was mentally tired after competing in three tournaments – Thomas Cup qualifiers, All-England and Swiss Open – in the last 1½ months.
His decision to skip the ABC, however, would depend on his coach Misbun Sidek.
“I would love to compete in the ABC. It is a home tournament and I want to give the home supporters something to cheer about. But I am tired,” said Chong Wei.
“It has been a hectic month. Right now, I feel confident with my position as the world number two player. I should be seeded second for the Olympics.
“If I compete in the ABC, I would definitely want to go all out and that would require me to focus a lot. It could all prove too much – mentally. I’d rather save my energy and give my best in the Thomas Cup Finals.”
Chong Wei is set to play an important role as the first singles player in the Finals which will be held in Jakarta from May 11-18.
“But, having said that, I will let my coach decide. If Misbun wants me to just go there (to the ABC tournament) and sweat it out, then I will be heading south,” he said.
Chong Wei also said that he was satisfied with his performances in the All-England and Swiss Open.
“Last year, I made it to the top eight of the All-England and crashed out in the first round of the Swiss Open. This year, I reached the All-England semi-finals and finished as the Swiss Open runner-up. I have no complaints,” he said.
“In the two tournaments, I defeated the main Asian countries’ top singles players, except for Lin Dan of China. This gives me the psychological edge before the Thomas Cup Finals.”
In the All-England, Chong Wei defeated Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia.
In the Swiss Open, he outplayed top players from South Korea and Denmark – Park Sung-hwan and Kenneth Jonassen respectively.
Although his participation in the ABC hangs in balance, Chong Wei said he was certain to make the trip north to compete in the National Grand Prix Finals in Alor Star next weekend. Chong Wei is aiming to win the national title for a record seventh successive time.
George, what are you doing up in KL?
Your Chong Wei will not compete in JB so you will not have a chance to see him in person.
Come with us to Jakarta for the TC. You can cheer LCW together with me and I will take a pic of you standing side by side with LCW. How about that? :D
LCW might go last minute... :)
cute_tbh 03-20-2008, 07:29 PM sorry to ask..maybe got the wrong thread, but i'm just wondering, before this ABC, there should be another homeground tournament in Kedah (if i'm not mistaken), rite?
when will it be held?
will top shuttlers like LCW, CTF/LWW and KKK/TBH participate?
thanks..

badMania 03-24-2008, 09:21 PM Look's like Team INA is going to send quite a huge contingent, in prepartion of the Thomas Cup and Beijing Olympics points.
From today's Kompas:
Semua Pemain Didaftarkan ke Kejuaraan Asia
"Every Player is listed to be sent to the Badminton Asia Championships" (but not necessarily sent eventually)
Some snippets:
Lius Pongoh stated that the decision of whether or not those players will be sent, esp Sony Dwi Kuncoro, will become important because it will be linked to their World Ranking, which will be an indication of their position in the Thomas Cup team.
After losing in the first round of the Swiss Open earlier this month, Sony is hoped to give his best in the BAC in order to achive the top target: his final ranking to be above Taufik Hidayat (good strategy!). According to the rules, the ranking list as of 24th April will become the eventual barometer of final order of players in the team.
This strategy is to ensure that Indonesia can win the point from MS2 through Taufik Hidayat. With the quality of men's singles which is just barely similar, Indonesia has to rely on that strategy because it's virtually impossible for them to win the first point from MS1 when facing strong teams like Malaysia and China, including the scenario if Taufik is placedas MS1.
In the last few encounters, both Taufik and Sony could not win their matches against Lin Dan (China) and Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia), who will be the respective MS1 for their own team.
However, if Sony is to compete in the BAC, he has to at least reach the Final in order to boost his ranking, added Lius. He also admitted that the best strategy for Team INA in the Thomas Cup will be to field Sony Dwi Kuncoro, Taufik Hidayat and Simon Santoso as MS1, MS2 and MS3 respectively.
Flandy Limpele/Vita Marissa have a different objective in the BAC. Their task is to wreck Team China's chance of fielding 3 XD pairs in the Olympics.
The WBF rules states that China can have 3 representatives if Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen (ranked 5th) somehow managed to get into the last 4 through the BAC. This is something that has to be prevented by Flandy/Vita, especially since their ranking points differ by a mere 1420 pts!
tjl_vanguard 03-24-2008, 11:17 PM hmm, looks like i havent plan yet:rolleyes:;)
hehe:p
u had better be quick! :D
george@chongwei 03-26-2008, 09:31 AM anyone have the official website of this tournament?
Jessica 03-28-2008, 08:20 PM Good news...LCW will compete in the ABC.This is the news from the star online..
Chong Wei to compete in ABC championships after all
PETALING JAYA: Top national men’s singles shuttler Lee Chong Wei will compete in the Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) in Johor Baru from April 15-20 after all.
The world No. 2 had been hoping to get a break from a hectic schedule but coach Misbun Sidek decided that Chong Wei's presence would lift the profile of the Asian meet.
The Asian meet is the last tournament for shuttlers to gain valuable Olympic ranking points. The qualifiers for the Beijing Olympic Games will be finalised after the April 30 deadline.
Chong Wei had hoped to skip the tournament claiming he was mentally tired after competing in the Thomas Cup qualifiers in Vietnam, the All-England and the Swiss Open.
He is currently in Alor Star bidding to win his sixth national title.
Based on the Malaysian entries, Chong Wei is still the country’s best bet to win the Asian title again, after having won it in 2006.
The other men’s singles in the fray are Wong Choong Hann, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Yeoh Kay Bin, Tan Chun Seang and Mohd Arif Abdul Latif.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) general manager Kenny Goh said: “We have also named some (players) under the reserve list. These players will take part in the ABC if there are last-minute withdrawals or lack of entries in a particular event.”
A country is allowed to field six men’s singles, six women’s singles, three men’s pairs, three women’s pairs and six mixed doubles pairs for the ABC.

hFang 03-29-2008, 12:59 AM Hi all,
I might be going too. :)
hcyong and Loh, see u all there if i can make it...
jimbo 03-29-2008, 06:00 AM What is Misbun's strategy for sending LCW to participate in ABC? As we all know, ThomasCup and OG08 are around the corner, and most importantly, LCW has already secured No.2 spot. Why Misbun decided to send LCW for ABC? Shouldnt LCW be given good rest and focus on more impt tourneys?
Dreamzz 03-29-2008, 06:19 AM are you suggesting that the ABC is not an important tournament?
some good ranking points on offer, even if he won't be able to overtake LD it's still good to keep close.
plus, it's on home ground so i think LCW going is a good idea.
as for INA's strategy of keeping SDK ahead of TH in the rankings for the TC, why don't they just not send TH? his place in the OG is already secure as well, unless he wants to boost his seeding.
Hi all,
I might be going too. :)

eaglehelang 03-29-2008, 11:24 AM What is Misbun's strategy for sending LCW to participate in ABC? As we all know, ThomasCup and OG08 are around the corner, and most importantly, LCW has already secured No.2 spot. Why Misbun decided to send LCW for ABC? Shouldnt LCW be given good rest and focus on more impt tourneys?
1) It's the last tourney of OG qualifiying, if LCW doesnt go, he lose ranking points, he played last year. BCL, CJ, are also going for India Open & ABC, both. They will gain some ranking pts in India. Wouldnt they need to rest too since they're also playing for TC & OG?
2) It's held on home ground, organisers=sponsors would want the best in Msia to go. Sponsors who sponsor BAM players.
LCW can rest after TC finals.

Dear eaglehelang,
I hope that LCW will play in ABC. Without him, the tournament will be bored as Lin Dan will also not participate in this tournament. I also believed that Malaysian fans definitely want to watch LCW play.I think that Misbun wants LCW to gain some points in order to secure the good seeding in the Olympics Games. Especially Bao Chun Lai & Chen Jin is trying to gain OG points too.
I agreed with you that LCW can take a break after Thomas Cup Final and concentrate on his Olympics preparation.
Thank You.

eaglehelang 03-31-2008, 09:00 PM LCW is 100% going to ABC. Misbun's reason for sending LCW :
from The Star, 1 April 2008
http://thestar.com.my/sports/story.asp?file=/2008/4/1/sports/20806441&sec=sports
.............Yesterday, Misbun defended his decision to field Chong Wei in the championships even though the player had hoped to get a short break from competition following a hectic schedule over the last two months.
“Chong Wei is currently very stable as the world number two. He could have taken a break but I felt that his presence in the ABC was important,” said Misbun after meeting among the coaches in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
“It is another platform for Chong Wei to push himself a little more, especially if he were to meet Chinese players.
“Chong Wei won the Asian title in 2006 but he crashed out in the last 16 last year. This time, I hope to see him reaching at least the semi-finals. It will put him in a good stead ahead of the Thomas Cup Finals (in May).”............

Misbun's expecting too much of LCW. ABC's probably his 5th competition in 2 months. In Misbun's times, he probably played 1 tournament in 2 months so he had never experienced the fatigue build up in LCW.
Better for LCW to adopt the attitude of turning up as glitter and just enjoy his badminton. No need to win this one. Win the ones that matter.
LCW should do fine. Don't worry about him.
Pemuda 03-31-2008, 11:14 PM No need to win this one???:confused:
Win the ones that matters??? :(
Is the ABC a lesser title than the NGP???
If LCW is talking about fatigue, then why the NGP?? He should have stayed home instead.
From things are looking for LCW at the ABC, the man already got himself an escape route should he not do well in the tournament - exhausted la.

If you read LCW's intv over at national gp thread, LCW wanted to skip ABC to focus on training for TC finals cos he's 1st player, 1st point for the team is important. Not so much as resting. But he did say whatever Misbun decides is fine with him.
Different coaches/experts have different views.
Exple : Jailani Sidek (in either Harian Metro or Utusan Msia), when asked by the press, had suggested KKK/TBH dont go for tourneys before TC finals but train hard to regain their 'lost' form. Some here would consider it too cowardly a move if Rexy actually did so.

One of the ways to improve your mental toughness and overcome "Kia Su" mentality is to go and compete. If you lose...so what? Keep pressing yourself and move forward! BTW, I found out in many occasions when M'sia players said they want to concentrate / focus on training to prepare for a major tournament; the results normally turn out to be devastating!

Just interesting different points of view, although it's about different players. Same in the forum too - when LCW went for Korea SS, some said why overtax himself. KKK/TBH wasnt sent for the same Korea SS, some said why didnt go, like your view, say must train "mental toughness".
Rexy said in Jan 2008 he only send KKK/TBH to selected tourneys so as not to overtax them like what happened in 2007, but that's coach view(that has produced results too), not player. Rexy is also the type of coach that ground his players if they dont do well in tourney, like punishment-> say they must stay home & train to overcome their weakness, Misbun doesnt do that, different methods.

Oldhand 04-07-2008, 05:11 AM Did you watch the 2008 Swiss Open MD Final?
IMHO, Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan lost not because they were outplayed by Lee Yong Dae and Jung Jae Sung but because they couldn't sustain the attack.
Yes, there were flashes of tremendous brilliance from both Setiawan and Kido.
But Kido's smashes seemed to get progressively weaker once the Koreans began lifting them back. Worse, Setiawan appeared to lose his way in front.
With the pressure mounting, their accuracy dipped to an awful low.
Shots that should have been outright winners went out or into the net.
Perhaps, Indonesia needs to try pairing Candra with Setiawan for the ABC ;)
I wish Sigit Budiarto and Hendra Setiawan could be paired.
Sigh! That would be the mother-of-all-lethal-pairs :D
fd16n 04-07-2008, 05:44 AM Indonesia -- Luluk Hadiyanto/Alvent Yulianto, Hendra A. Gunawan/Joko Riyadi, Candra Wijaya/Nova Widianto :confused::eek:
Regarding to this, there's an article in today KOMPAS edition that maybe give explanation to ur confusement.
Adapun China memiliki Zheng Bo/Gao Ling (2) dan He Hanbin/Yu Yang (3).

In ABC, Limpele & Candra are listed in the list of players although they are not pairing up. Limpele will focus on XD & Chandra will pair up with Nova.
Chandra/Nova will be one of the MD along with Luluk/Alvent & Joko/Hendra.
PBSI's Luis Pongoh said Chandra/Nova's names have been submitted to replace Kido/Setiawan. The World No 1 MD will not play in Msia cos Kido have not been training since his father passed away on 2 April.
On why Chandra is not pairing with Limpele, Luis said Limpele will focus on XD With Marissa. The target is stop China from featuring 3 XD pairs in OG in Beijing.
Adapun China memiliki Zheng Bo/Gao Ling (2) dan He Hanbin/Yu Yang (3).
At this point, Indonesia & China both have 2 XD pairs for OG. Indonesia = Nova/Lilyana, Limpele/Marissa. China = Zheng Bo/Gao Ling, He Hanbin/Yu Yang. China has a chance to get one more XD ticket if Xie/Zhang Yawen(no 5) are able topple Limpele/Marissa cos their ranking pts difference is only 1,420. Therefore, Flandy/Vita are given the task to avoid 3 China XD pairs in OG. Plus, all 3 China XD pairs will be competing in ABC.
Luis said Chandra/Nova are not confirmed to be pairing up for TC. "They are just paired for trial basis. Chandra did say he wants to try to play with Nova & Nova is ready. But the 3rd MD pair are still in discussion."

This ABC would be nice to watch. Infact Among all the ABC's i think this one is worth going for.
madbad 04-07-2008, 05:32 PM The timing is such that this ABC has the quality of a SS tournament (minus the Euros). With out the OG coming up in a few months, it would be the same lacklustre affair it's been the last few years. You lucky people going to watch it!!

Yes, but no top European players in sight, especially the Danes both men and women, unfortunately!

LOL, I assume you are joking ? Limpele/Marissa are no 4, they must do well in ABC so that Xie/Zhang Yawen Cannot move up from no 5 to no 4 in rankings. And apparrently China is sending all 3 XD pairs to ABC.

Kah, kah, Jason, careful, some will say you're speculating.
And no, Fu/Cai and Kido/Setiawan not going. Like the article said, Kido's father just passed away, he hasnt been in training. FU/Cai dunno why, didnt read anywhere in the press about the official reason.

Hi AlanY,
We cannot call wanting to beat your opponents 'match fixing', can we?
All participants should play positively; to play to win.
'Match fixing' occurs when not wanting to beat your opponents or your teammates; to play to lose.

How? It's not like they're predetermining the outcome of a game, they actually have to WORK if they want to achieve their goal. They can't just say "Oh yep alright, you aren't going to the Olympics because we said so..."...
And it's perfectly within the rules to WANT a country to have less pairs :p.
badMania 04-08-2008, 06:51 AM And it's perfectly within the rules to WANT a country to have less pairs :p.
Indeed...China's XD pairs go to Johor with a mission too...to ensure that Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen DO QUALIFY for the Olympics!
It will be an interesting tactical battle between the coaches.
Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir and Zheng Bo/Gao Ling will be seeded 1st and 2nd, while He Hanbin/Yu Yang and Flandy Limpele/Vita Marissa will be seeded 3rd and 4th for sure.
So, Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen will HAVE TO PLAY against either of these 4 pairs in the QF
Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen HAVE TO WIN this championships in order to qualify for the Olympics :o In the meantime, they have to hope that Flandy/Vita DO NOT PROGRESS to the Final.
It will be an interesting 5-days.....

Your calculations are almost exactly correct, badMania. According to BAC website about M/Q report :
Top 16 MS seeding :
1 -- Lin Dan
2 -- Lee Chong Wei
3/4 -- Bao Chunlai ; Chen Jin
5/8 -- Taufik Hidayat ; Sony Dwi Kuncoro ; Lee Hyun Il ; Park Sung Hwan
9/16 -- Chen Yu ; Boonsak Ponsana ; Simon Santoso ; Wong Choong Han ; Ronald Susilo ; Shoji Sato ; Chan Yan Kit ; Ng Wei
Top 8 WS seeding :
1 -- Xie Xingfang
2 -- Zhang Ning
3/4 -- Lu Lan ; Wang Chen
5/8 -- Zhu Lin ; Wong Mew Choo ; Yip Pui Yin ; Eriko Hirose
Several withdrawals of WS disclipine so far are KOR players (Jun Jae Youn, Hwang Hye Youn and Lee Yun Hwa), HKG (Zhou Mi) and INA shuttlers (Adrianti Firdasari, Fransisca Ratnasari).

6) Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Zakry/Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif
7) Shuichi Sakamoto/Shintero Ikeda
8) Tadashi Ohtsuka/Keita Masuda
- Japanese WD pair Ogura/Shiota seems pulled out of the Asian meet and this disclipine only has top-5 seeding due to lack of participants?!
Top 5 WD seeding :
1) Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen
2) Lee Hyo Jung/Lee Kyung Won
3) Chien Yu Chin/Cheng Wen Hsing

One thing that impresses me most about you, Birdwood, is your good manners, which reflects very well on your parents.People with naturally good manners are ,sadly,a diminishing species. So you stand out in a special but positive way.I don't see why I need to rationalise what i visualise but for you, I will oblige.
The reason why I split MS (and WS) into CHN and non-CHN is because CHN MS are big enough as a team to help the chosen CHN MS win in individual events.(Whereas non-CHN do not actually work as a group to favour one non-CHN player to win, so that's just a shorthand.)
Based on seedings, one half will have 2 CHN MS which will have a 50% chance of making the final;the other half will have 1 CHN MS which has a 25% chance of making the same. This ABC is actually tougher for CHN MS than the SS. If you check performance over the last year, indications are CHN MS has a distinct advantage over (top)European MS but none over (top) Asian(non-CHN) MS. So Asian (nC)MS has a good chance of upsetting CHN MS compared to European MS's odd chance. So the chance of LYB deciding one SF outcome is less than in a SS.
When I said 'should', it means the possibility of non-CHN MS winning it is MORE rather than less. And there's no guarantee.(It also assumes that the other 3 CHN MS check out early.)
If the ratio were 5:3 in favour of CHN like it used to be,when CH was playing, then I would say,'CHN sure win.Can guarantee.'
jimbo 04-10-2008, 05:22 AM anyone going to watch ABC in JB over the weekend? Looking for kakis to travel from SG to JB. Uncle Loh, keen to go JB to take photo with Taufik? :D

samuel882 04-10-2008, 05:59 AM Several withdrawals of WS disclipine so far are KOR players (Jun Jae Youn, Hwang Hye Youn and Lee Yun Hwa)
:crying:OH NO ! Why :rolleyes::confused::crying:
- Japanese WD pair Ogura/Shiota seems pulled out of the Asian meet and this disclipine only has top-5 seeding due to lack of participants?!
OH NO , NOT AGAIN :o :crying: :crying: :crying:

That's why you can 'read' abt BCers from Johor & our neighbour down south, Spore, very eagerly awaiting this tourney. This year more exciting than previous years as it's the last tourney for OG qualifications

Thanks for kindly explaining it. Always enjoyed your posts, and it’s reassuring to hear the reasons since I’m rather naive in baddy tourney. I guess it’s a simple math with 5 non-Chn vs 3 Chn, in which everyone would be more for himself than a team effort all the way to the final
As for the manner, I just don’t want to be left behind because most BCers are centrist with distinguished records of politeness. Besides, when in the Uncle category (age-wise), what choices one has :D
btw: I saw posts that LD used to skip MO due to weather or something, but LD is going to be at ABC. Does anyone know if LD went to previous ABC or he changed his mind this time?

Me, I might be going, semis and final only.
:crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
I wish I was there:crying::crying::crying::crying:
I hope my dream come thru
What kind of logic is this?
Then in that case, which country's player will win:rolleyes:... Consider,
Non-Mas MS to Mas MS seeds is 7:1 so Non-Mas MS should win
Non-Ina MS to Ina MS seeds is 6:2 so Non-Ina MS should win
Non-Kor MS to Kor MS seeds is 7:1 so Non-Kor MS should win
Non-Tha MS to Tha MS sees is 7:1 so Non-Tha MS should win
While Non-Chn MS to Chn MS is 5:3?
So nobody stands a chance according to your logic...
Yes, I agree, the analysis of PJSWIFT is getting a bit extreme unless the non-Chinese all gang up to conspire ... Boy, now we have Chinese vs non-Chinese issue. I do agree Chinese sending such a big team in man singles is to protect Chen Jin in 4th position.

singhzico 04-10-2008, 04:15 PM What is Misbun's strategy for sending LCW to participate in ABC? As we all know, ThomasCup and OG08 are around the corner, and most importantly, LCW has already secured No.2 spot. Why Misbun decided to send LCW for ABC? Shouldnt LCW be given good rest and focus on more impt tourneys?
 I totally agree with u LCW should take a break I hope he does not pick up an injury that would really be disasterous:):)
singhzico 04-10-2008, 04:17 PM The tentative list (from the NST) looks to be very impressive:
Men's Singles
China -- Lin Dan, Bao Chunlai, Chen Jin
Indonesia -- Taufik Hidayat, Sony Dwi Kuncoro, Simon Santoso
Malaysia -- all the senior players
Korea -- Park Sung Hwan, Lee Hyun Il
Men's Doubles
Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan, Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun, Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah, Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae, Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong, Hwang Ji Man/Han Sang Hoon (almost 100% if Jung/Lee are included), Luluk Hadiyanto/Alvent Yulianto, Guo Zhendong/Xie Zhongbo -- that's like the top Asian pairs duking it out with each other

Sorry not doing well with Malaysia geography. You are in Bukit Baru, Melaka state, which is even closer to Johore. I hope I got it right this time :)
JB is at the southernmost tip of the Malaysian peninsula with Singapore just a causeway (bridge) away to the south.
If I travel from Singapore towards the northern part of Malaysia, I will arrive at (in order of distance nearer Singapore):
Johor (Johor Bahru)
Melaka (Malacca),
Negeri Sembilan (Seremban)
Selangor (Kuala Lumpur)
Perak (Ipoh)
Penang (George Town)
Kedah (Alor Setar)
Perlis (Kangar)
Perak, Perlis and Kedah share a common border with southern Thailand.
As for badminton, the popular Malaysian venues are JB, KL and Alor Setar.
The eastern part of the peninsula consists of the bigger states of Pahang (Kuantan & Cameron Highlands), Terengganu (Kuala Terengganu) and Kelantan (Kota Bahru) I think abedeng hails from Kelantan and azabaz_ipoh is from Ipoh. :)
azabaz_ipoh 04-10-2008, 11:18 PM except abedeng hails from kelantan but lives in kuala lumpur now whereas i'm from ipoh and lives in ipoh too :D

according to a few of the 'officals' the main reason for LYB sending the full MS team is to help CJ to remain at world No 4 thus qualify for the 3rd MS for olympics. can't see any other reason rather than this, can you?

JB is a tiring place to go. Not about the long distance, but the city traffic lights. They shouldn't have called the stretch between Ulu Tiram and JB City a "highway".

There are many other reasons why LD may go: be with XXF, get more prize, pre-OG 08 conditioning, every other best Asian MS player will be there, etc. The reason you gave could be the main one. But CJ has to be able to win matches by himself. We saw CJ going all the way to AE 08 MSF or losing early in Swiss Open 08 and India Open 08. Mere presence of LD will not guarantee what CJ will achieve.
What I was asking is the facts regarding LD. It's been told LD did not go to MO for some reasons, but did he go to other recent ABC? Simply, I'm trying to assess how LD will fare against other players in an ABC setting.

Yes, LD could be asked by LYB or even CJ. If your friend wants or needs you be there, wouldn't you go? If they are lucky in their draws, LD could win the half and CJ the other. If they are in the same half bracket, even if LD "loses" to CJ, the latter would still have to stand on his own feet to win afterward. As far as I can tell, CJ is in the right place in the World ranking. With some luck, he can reach SF albeit he's injury-free.

It's very near by taxi from Larkin. 5 to 10 mins and RM5 to RM8 depending on taxi driver. If you're gonna be there Fri, Sat or Sun and want good seats, turn up one hour earlier since it's free seating.I'll be there every day, just not sure when I'll turn up.ABC has been an excellent tournament the last 2 years because of the crowd. The crowd's very appreciative of the players. Especially during Finals, all the players get superstar treatment in terms of applause.

Let me share some mind reading.
The last thing LD wants is to turn up for an ABC where all the other top non-CHN MS also sign up.ABC is tougher for LD than an SS.In an SS ,when LD plays an European MS, he's actually getting a match 'break', since no European MS has ever beaten him except PG once (in 2005?).Whereas Asian MS has been taking turns to beat LD in the last year (except fast fuel-leaking INA MS.)So LD can fall to anyone next week. The only reason for LD 's presence is to shore up his own OG08 chances. He's not doing it for CJ.If CJ does not qualify for OG08, LD's chance of winning gold practically evaporates, based on historical conditioning.

The last statement is very bold based on one data point of "historical conditioning". It doesn't make a lot sense in math to me

Well, it's more than math and probabilities, at least for us "veteran critics" .... :D I'm sure you should be able to notice it, based on previous results, looking at how LD fared when all his colleagues fell before semis. Take the AG 2006, for example. And then move forward from then onwards, how many times did LD win while fighting alone? Good as LD is, I still rate Yang Yang and Han Jian better, they won titles without any "assistance or companionship", so to speak.
Not to say that we are not impressed by his consistency, but LD is not invulnerable. You could say he was bundled out by nerves in Athens, but Beijing won't be so kind if he fails again.
abedeng 04-12-2008, 04:02 AM So Bro Din, do we (hcyong and I) including Jessica, Vanguard and others see you for at least the SF (Sat) and F (Sun) before we meet again in Jakarta? ;)
Yup, I will probably reach JB early Sat morning. Night drive. You guys on day trip or bunking somewhere in JB?

I have no problem with any predictions based on facts. I have noticed LD or anyone may have this or that weakness. But "If CJ does not qualify for OG08, LD's chance of winning gold practically evaporates, based on historical conditioning" (post #243) went too far. If you'd agree with this kind logic and prediction, there would be no one left with a chance to win baddy gold medal in OG 08. I take this again as a way pjswift wanted to provocatively challenge our brains.
As "Take the AG 2006, for example. And then move forward from then onwards, how many times did LD win while fighting alone? Good as LD is, I still rate Yang Yang and Han Jian better", isn't the example a little old? What has happened to LD since that time and in comparison to other players? Chn players usually don't fight alone because they are the top ranked players and there are plenty of them entering SS. Besides, LD is not playing Yang Yang and Han Jian. LD will be up against LCW, TH, etc. Have we witnessed much hope from these players lately?
