View Full Version : German Open 2008: Day 6/Finals
madbad 03-01-2008, 06:37 PM OK, here we go:
Mixed Doubles
Yong Dae Lee/Hyo Jung Lee over Hanbin He/Yang Yu
A really tough one to call. On one hand you have the CHN pair that took care of business ruthlessly against Han/Hwang in the SF. On the other you have the irrepressible LYD, who can change a match all by himself. Let's see who's nerves holds best. I have a sneaky feeling LYD will be the difference maker.
Womens Singles
Jae Youn Jun over Yihan Wang.
I must admit Wang Yihan is scarily good and that my beloved (:p) Jun will have her plate full. It will be close and a test of nerves at the end game. I think Jun's experience will see her lift the trophy... just.
Mens Singles
Hyun Il Lee over Sho Sasaki. As well as Sasaki has played, he hasn't come across a player the calibre of Lee. Lee won't take anything for granted and I expect to see a thoroughly professional display from him.
Womens Doubles
Kyung Won Lee/Hyo Jung Lee over Miyuki Maeda/Satoko Suetsuna
Lee/Lee came from a game down to eliminate Gao Ling/ZTT. This is a testament to the Korean fighting spirit. Maeda/Suetsuna created their own upset and I have to say I am impressed. Lee/Lee should have enough to handle the Japanese and justify their #1 seeding.
Mens Doubles
Jae Sung Jung/Yong Dae over Lee/Jae Jin Lee/Ji Man Hwang
I wonder if this will be an exhibition match or will the coach let 'm have a go at each other. If it's the latter, I think it'll be close than many think. If it's the former, then sadly, I suspect LYD/JJS will be "picked" to win. In any case, it's always better to have LYD on your side ;)
Yup, that's right, I'm calling for a Korean sweep.:eek:
huangkwokhau 03-01-2008, 07:48 PM It seems that KOR MD is following China's pattern....WO..:D:D:D saving energy for LYD tomorrow....
abedeng 03-01-2008, 10:09 PM Can you believe it, I fell asleep during the live telecast of the semifinals .... :o Yeah, just great, for a supposedly dedicated and "neutral" badminton fan.
Must be that lousy Astro commentator, plus staying awake the previous night doing work at the office until morning.
Mixed Doubles
Yong Dae Lee/Hyo Jung Lee over Hanbin He/Yang Yu
I will go for China this time, based on their previous win in the Malaysian Open final. If Lee Hyo Jung pulls up her socks, Korea can turn the tables.
Womens Singles
Jae Youn Jun over Yihan Wang.
Jun to take it, but Wang Yihan's progress shows that she's ready to displace Jiang Yanjao and be the backup for the current CHN top 4 (XXF, ZN, ZL, LL). Groomed to take over ZN's place. 3 setter very possible.
Mens Singles
Hyun Il Lee over Sho Sasaki.
Lee all the way ..... Sasaki will be kept guessing.
Womens Doubles
Kyung Won Lee/Hyo Jung Lee over Miyuki Maeda/Satoko Suetsuna
Lee/Lee favoured, but expect the toughest of challenges from Maeda and Suetsuna. Probably the most difficult JPN pair for the Koreans to play against. JPN will be encouraged with last week's win although KOR fielded scratch combination.
Mens Doubles
Jae Sung Jung/Yong Dae over Jae Jin Lee/Ji Man Hwang
Lee/Hwang to win and gain more Olympic points.
ye333 03-01-2008, 11:07 PM Let's hope the MD final will not bring us a Walkover.

george@chongwei 03-02-2008, 12:03 AM does anyone knows wat time astro will broacast live?
badMania 03-02-2008, 12:11 AM My picks:
Men's Singles
Sho Sasaki [13] vs Lee Hyun Il [2] -- the Japanese player created upsets over upsets, since his win over Andre Kurniawan Tedjono on Thursday  I pick Lee to win his 2nd titles in a row.
Men's Doubles
Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae [1] vs Lee Jae Jin/Hwang Ji Man [2] -- all-KOR Final....Jung/Lee to win their first title in a year.
Women's Singles
Wang Yihan vs Jun Jae Yun [2] -- Jun to win!
Women's Doubles
Lee Kyung Won/Lee Hyo Jung [1] vs Satoko Suetsuna/Miyuki Maeda [4] -- Lee/Lee to pick their first title in quite a long time.
Mixed Doubles
He Hanbin/Yu Yang [1] vs Lee Yong Dae/Lee Hyo Jung [4] -- tough to call...the key player will be Lee Yong Dae. If he can play like against the INA pair in the Korea Open Final, this pair should have a chance. But, He/Yu are on a roll right now.
ye333 03-02-2008, 12:18 AM He/Yu won the MAS final using a few perfect serves in a row. Let's see whether Lee/Lee can deal with it this time.
My picks:
Men's Singles
Sho Sasaki [13] vs Lee Hyun Il [2] -- the Japanese player created upsets over upsets, since his win over Andre Kurniawan Tedjono on Thursday  I pick Lee to win his 2nd titles in a row.
Men's Doubles
Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae [1] vs Lee Jae Jin/Hwang Ji Man [2] -- all-KOR Final....Jung/Lee to win their first title in a year.
Women's Singles
Wang Yihan vs Jun Jae Yun [2] -- Jun to win!

sumbadder 03-02-2008, 12:40 AM Men's Singles
Sho Sasaki [13] vs Lee Hyun Il [2] -- I'd like to see Sho take this because he's actually gotten this far but Lee is definitely in a different echelon. Lee ftw!
Men's Doubles
Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae[1] vs Lee Jae Jin/Hwang Ji Man [2] -- World #6 vs World #10. The lower ranked pair to either win or "win".
Women's Singles
Wang Yihan vs Jun Jae Yun [2] -- Jun to win handily or the CHN debutante will make a ruckus and stretch the Korean and maybe even topple her. Kinda begs the question of where Wang Lin is and if she could have made a difference here.
Women's Doubles
Lee Kyung Won/Lee Hyo Jung [1] vs Satoko Suetsuna/Miyuki Maeda [4] -- If the Lee's don't win this for whatever reason, I think their confidence would completely implode given how long they've gone without touching a gold especially after coming close many times. That said, this Japanese pair has proven to be a huge dark-horse, toppling Vita/Lilyana at MO and a few other unexpected results earlier. They might just be able to pull it off.
Mixed Doubles
He Hanbin/Yu Yang [1] vs Lee Yong Dae/Lee Hyo Jung [4] -- Yu Yang is definitely the star of the CHN pair, utilizing great defense and strong anticipation skills at the net. If she keeps the Koreans scrambling then the title will be CHN's.
madbad 03-02-2008, 12:47 AM Kinda begs the question of where Wang Lin is and if she could have made a difference here.
Wang Lin has fallen waaaaay down the CHN depth chart. She's no where on the CHN radar as far as legit successors for their current queens go. As you can see, Wang Yihan is the flavour of the month. With the CHN badminton factory, they can pick and choose ruthlessly. One slip and you're on the back burner. And she showed so much promise only a couple of years ago. :(
jasonmarc 03-02-2008, 01:20 AM I didnit follow Ferman Open until today.....Korean have really dominated this tourney......and will participates in all the finals.....This is the first time Korean be so dominant ...and seems like going to take over from China...GL/ZTT also lost...in Semi....

Yes, but this is Korea's first team and the dominant players of China, Malaysia and Denmark have given this non-SS German Open a miss to concentrate on the forthcoming AE! :)

That's lame. I remember a couple months ago she almost took out ZN at the China Open. I guess that's the peril of being in such a huge pool to sink or swim in though. Hopefully she makes a comeback though. I guess we'll start seeing more of the younglings being sent out with the end of the Olympics so who knows.

Yeah, post Olympics is probably a good time to start another dominating 4-year program for CHN WS. ZN will definitely be done. Not sure if they'll keep Jiang - she's fighting for her life on the team IMHO. Lu Lan is a better prospect than Jiang. Wang Yihan has been widely touted to inherit one of the available spots. Of the seniors, XXF and ZL are safe.

Yes,...of course.....i can see players like LYD/LHJ and LHI are on fire.......and they are the players to watch...in coming AE..

Yep, by the end of the year, CHina will have XXF, ZN, ZL, LL, WYH, possibly JYJ, all in the top 10 of the world, a scary thought.

samuel882 03-02-2008, 07:15 AM samuel..What is your trick again this time???:rolleyes::D
For the sake of ur position in the PAW's game ;)
LEE87 03-02-2008, 07:15 AM 9-1(korea), what happen to LYD?
Jessica 03-02-2008, 07:15 AM i m going to watch live...will be in n out here........stay tune, and support Korea...
Good...Can reduce weight and exercise..:D:D
Jessica 03-02-2008, 07:16 AM For the sake of ur position in the PAW's game ;)
But i want to overtake you..Lets hope LHI will wi later..:p:D
abedeng 03-02-2008, 07:17 AM CHN pair race to a quick lead, and KOR look flustered.
YY even managed to change racquets in mid rally, an still won that rally.
Now 10-4 CHN lead.
samuel882 03-02-2008, 07:17 AM HHB is on fire today... keep it on
abedeng 03-02-2008, 07:20 AM Consultant break done, and KOR rotation still not smooth.
CHN use intelligent placing to force KOR to lift. 16-6
Dreamzz 03-02-2008, 07:23 AM looks like the KOR pair have it all to do in the 2nd game.
abedeng 03-02-2008, 07:24 AM CHN didn't need to break sweat, winning the 1st game 21-9.
LHJ depending too much on LYD, but today LYD is not at his best.
Louisa 03-02-2008, 07:25 AM Good...Can reduce weight and exercise..:D:D
me so skinny liao, no need reduce weight...
But i want to overtake you..Lets hope LHI will wi later..:p:D
I support u......:D
abedeng 03-02-2008, 07:26 AM YY crouch defense is pretty good.
LYD force to run left and right.
2-2 HHB serve is short.
samuel882 03-02-2008, 07:27 AM come on CHN, this is ur only chance to redeem a title here !
abedeng 03-02-2008, 07:28 AM CHN start to pull away, 6-3
samuel882 03-02-2008, 07:29 AM But i want to overtake you..Lets hope LHI will wi later..:p:D
Of course u can overtake me by choosing the safest PAW among all :(
abedeng 03-02-2008, 07:31 AM Disputed line call, KOR pull back 6-6. CHN not happy and fall behind, 6-8
samuel882 03-02-2008, 07:31 AM OMG ! seems gona be a 3 set thriller
eaglehelang 03-02-2008, 07:31 AM eh? What's happening to Korea XD? Got trashed 1st set, and this is not China best XD
abedeng 03-02-2008, 07:32 AM LYD shouts as he takes another pt, 9-6
samuel882 03-02-2008, 07:34 AM eh? What's happening to Korea XD? Got trashed 1st set, and this is not China best XD
Its pretty even game in the second game compare with the 1st.. They both won a title in SS early of this year. CHN in MAS , KOREa on their home SS. Their standards was not too far
abedeng 03-02-2008, 07:35 AM HHB's performance drops a notch as LYD returns to form.
But YY dominates the net, only 10-11 behind at the break.
Jessica 03-02-2008, 07:42 AM Of course u can overtake me by choosing the safest PAW among all :(
DOn't give up yet..Maybe later will have big surprise which Sasaki chop down three Korea tiger...
samuel882 03-02-2008, 07:47 AM come on CHN . u seldom drop at the deuce !
abedeng 03-02-2008, 07:49 AM Game in the balance, pt for pt at 13-13
eaglehelang 03-02-2008, 07:51 AM livescore says 23-23, still at it
samuel882 03-02-2008, 07:51 AM one more please ! CHN !
samuel882 03-02-2008, 07:51 AM endless battle. stuck at 24-24
abedeng 03-02-2008, 07:51 AM Point for point battle continues, KOR save 5 matchpts.
abedeng 03-02-2008, 07:53 AM CHN save gamept, 25-25
samuel882 03-02-2008, 07:53 AM its penalty kick time
THEbaschti 03-02-2008, 07:54 AM Come on LYD one more point!!
abedeng 03-02-2008, 07:55 AM KOR get 2nd chance, and made it count as LYD pressure forces YY to flick the shuttle out, 27-25
samuel882 03-02-2008, 07:55 AM sigh ! how could the CHN missed their big chances to end it in streak game!
every encounter between this two pair end in a thriller
abedeng 03-02-2008, 07:56 AM LHJ straps her right knee ...
eaglehelang 03-02-2008, 07:56 AM 2nd set 27-25, should be interesting, if anyone later uploads the vid
Jessica 03-02-2008, 07:57 AM Wow...Great fighting spirit by the Korea pair despite China pair has a few chances to wrap it up..
abedeng 03-02-2008, 07:57 AM Great opening rally, won by HHB smash.
samuel882 03-02-2008, 07:58 AM korea play a smart tactic to be on offensive rights from the opponent's serve
abedeng 03-02-2008, 07:59 AM YY scratches her head, now that she's 1-3 down
samuel882 03-02-2008, 08:00 AM the chinese totally devasted from the second set setback
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:00 AM CHN break their slump, 3-5
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:01 AM 3rd service fault on YY.
samuel882 03-02-2008, 08:02 AM YY looks so hopeless in the third
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:03 AM KOR back in control as LYD smash finds the mark, 9-4.
samuel882 03-02-2008, 08:03 AM now its the CHN turn for being thrashed
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:04 AM LHJ floors HHB to earn tea break, 11-4
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:06 AM CHN rotation a bit slow, YY failed to set up defence.
But now they close gap from LHJ's mistakes, 7-12
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:08 AM LHJ missed an easy kill, CHN close in 9-12
badMania 03-02-2008, 08:09 AM He/Yu seem able to close down any gap, like when they face Rijal/Grace in the QF :o:cool:
The Korean better be careful as they have only won 2 pts since the break, while the Chinese mustered 7 pts to close the gap to only 2
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:10 AM When LHJ plays like this, even WPT should be able to beat her.
CHN breathing close, 11-13.
samuel882 03-02-2008, 08:10 AM more mistakes from Lee HJ give away some pts to the CHN
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:11 AM Finally, great return by LHJ.
16-12
samuel882 03-02-2008, 08:11 AM it should be the first title for korean today
badMania 03-02-2008, 08:12 AM A slight breathing space for the Korean pair at 17-13....but only just....
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:12 AM LYD not to be denied, 17-13
badMania 03-02-2008, 08:12 AM it should be the first title for korean today
First title for Korea (hopefully), but not for Lee/Lee though ;)
badMania 03-02-2008, 08:13 AM The gap shrinks back to 2 pts at 17-15....thrilling stuffs here.
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:13 AM Couple of KOR smash errors, 15-17
badMania 03-02-2008, 08:14 AM 2 quick pts to make it a 4-pts gap again for the Korean pair, 19-15.
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:15 AM It will take a super effort for CHN to win.
KOR with 4 matchpts.
badMania 03-02-2008, 08:15 AM 4 match pts for Korea, 20-16.
samuel882 03-02-2008, 08:15 AM CHN found the time delaying tactics by LYD more annoying
badMania 03-02-2008, 08:17 AM Lee Yong Dae/Lee Hyo Jung take their 2nd titles this year as they beat He Hanbin/Yu Yang 9-21, 27-25, 21-18; having saved so many match pts in the second set. Congrats!
No title for He Hanbin/Yu Yang here will make it more difficult for them to qualify as China's 3rd pair in the Olympics.
Louisa 03-02-2008, 08:18 AM the morale of this game is - those who refuse to change shuttle too many times will lose...
Jessica 03-02-2008, 08:18 AM Congrat to the Korea pair for winning the match but Lee Hyo Jung always mess up the things...If not LYD always save it,they will sure lost..
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:18 AM KOR wins 21-18. In the end, it was their mental strength in 2nd game (saved 5 matchpts) and big gap in 3rd game that gave them the title.
LHJ almost blew it, though.
Jessica 03-02-2008, 08:19 AM the morale of this game is - those who refuse to change shuttle too many times will lose...
:D:D:D...Hmm..What should i say...;)
Louisa 03-02-2008, 08:22 AM :D:D:D...Hmm..What should i say...;)
:D, if u watch live, u know...;)
samuel882 03-02-2008, 08:23 AM the morale of this game is - those who refuse to change shuttle too many times will lose...
And those keeps applying the time delaying tactics will sure win :o
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:23 AM A lot of mind games from both sides. Today LYD got better as the game progressed. That was the difference.
Jessica 03-02-2008, 08:24 AM :D, if u watch live, u know...;)
I am watching live lar..I know what you mean but just want to tease you..Btw,Yu Yang is so cute...:p:p
Jessica 03-02-2008, 08:24 AM And those keeps applying the time delaying tactics will sure win :o
I think luyi will win the PAW title..:o:rolleyes::cool:
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:25 AM A JPN player (probably Suetsuna) shown to TV setting up "spy camera" for the next match, Jun vs Wang Yihan.
Louisa 03-02-2008, 08:30 AM And those keeps applying the time delaying tactics will sure win :o
hahaha, a bit sour taste here....i think both pairs applying that tactic:p
I am watching live lar..I know what you mean but just want to tease you..Btw,Yu Yang is so cute...:p:p
Yup, Yu Yang is cute, a good player though, smash not bad, too...:D
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:31 AM Jun with both knees heavily strapped. Wonder how she could bend her knees....
Wang Yihan is quite pleasant looking.
Louisa 03-02-2008, 08:32 AM I think luyi will win the PAW title..:o:rolleyes::cool:
I bet djake to take the title this time, still 2 paws to go...
samuel882 03-02-2008, 08:32 AM Jun Jun Jun ! now its ur turn to make sure a KOREAN CLEAN SWEEP !
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:35 AM LYD admiring his trophy.
Jun lead 4-2, a lot of drops keeping Wang flatfooted.
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:37 AM Wang applying quite a bit of pace. 5-5.
kevinboy 03-02-2008, 08:39 AM Jun Jun Jun ! now its ur turn to make sure a KOREAN CLEAN SWEEP !
wang leads 7-6
Come on wang:)
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:39 AM Jun cannot follow this speed, she needs to slow it down.
Level score after Wang returns wide.
kevinboy 03-02-2008, 08:40 AM Jun cannot follow this speed, she needs to slow it down.
Level score after Wang returns wide.
I pick wang in PAW:cool:
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:42 AM Kim Hak Kyun looking concerned.
Despite her speed, Wang gets confused with Jun's drops.
11-9 Wang lead at the break.
Jessica 03-02-2008, 08:42 AM Jun dropshot was amazing...I hope she will win..
abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:44 AM Wang does a LCW style net kill.

abedeng 03-02-2008, 08:55 AM Wang had the game under control with her speed and accuracy. But like other youngsters her age, impatience creeps in once a gap is opened.
Jun did well to take that game, but she expended quite a lot of energy.
samuel882 03-02-2008, 08:55 AM Good Jun ! yes babe ! She just sending the shuttle all over the court and toying around the Chinese! good tactics to exhausted the chinese energy

abedeng 03-02-2008, 09:13 AM Another good defence gives Jun matchpt, converted 21-10.
Wang's game just chaotic.
More headaches for CHN coaches.

robin7 03-02-2008, 09:16 AM sorry for robin7, once again the chinese ruled ur chances to win the PAW :(

abedeng 03-02-2008, 09:18 AM Wang dropped the lid of her trophy, laughing.
samuel882 03-02-2008, 09:18 AM will Sasaki continue his giant killer acts?

Jessica 03-02-2008, 09:55 AM This Sasaki quite good..How old is him???At least better than yesterday Gong Wei Jie...
Louisa 03-02-2008, 09:56 AM em, better than Gong for sure, at least he has answer to Lee's shot...Lee more unforced errors, compared to yesterday
robin7 03-02-2008, 09:57 AM Sasaki would have won the 1st game if he is more careful at the net.
carine 03-02-2008, 10:00 AM I think no upset for it ady...LHI leading 8-2 now
robin7 03-02-2008, 10:00 AM This Sasaki quite good..How old is him???At least better than yesterday Gong Wei Jie...
em, better than Gong for sure, at least he has answer to Lee's shot...Lee more unforced errors, compared to yesterday
It's not fair to judge a player just in a match. Sasaki has more exposure than Gong has. Gong seldom plays SS tourneys compared to Sasaki.
robin7 03-02-2008, 10:01 AM Looks like LHI is gonna win in the same fashion as her compatriot Jun did.
carine 03-02-2008, 10:02 AM LHI leading 11-2...LHI sure win

robin7 03-02-2008, 10:07 AM Sasaki has lost his confidence after losing the 1st game. He looks like a defeated man.

madbad 03-02-2008, 11:08 AM Good morning everyone. what a great morning when you wake up to see who has won the WS :D:D. Thank you all who supported Jun. I'm sure she's totally appreciative of your support! Sounded like a tough 1st game that Wang should have wrapped up but the experience of Jun stole away. We saw who was clearly the better player in the 2nd. Anyway, congrats to my babe and onto the AE!! :):):):):)
Dreamzz 03-02-2008, 11:09 AM Good morning everyone. what a great morning when you wake up to see who has won the WS :D:D. Thank you all who supported Jun. ah, good for you then.
hope she does well when all the 'big' gals are back in town.
badMania 03-02-2008, 11:20 AM You really have to admit that Park Joo Bong's presence has indeed boosted the Japanese doubles.
Tadashi Ohtsuka/Keita Masuda and Shuichi Sakamoto are 2nd rated doubles players previously, but, they are now nearing at least the top 10 pairs' standards. What they need is consistency.
Likewise, Kumiko Ogura/Reiko Shiota use to be the only reliable WD pair, but now, Japan has 2 more improving pairs: Satoko Suetsuna/Miyuki Maeda and Aki Akao/Tomomi Matsuda
robin7 03-02-2008, 11:22 AM LKW/LHJ won it 21-17 21-16.
k-a-n-t 03-02-2008, 11:23 AM korea win again ^_^
