taufik didn't turn up due to 'personal reason' and the doubles' match went to the english pair. i think it was 26-24, 11-21, 21-19 (?!, not sure)
chong wei ended up showing some of his smashes and defencing skills. oh, misbun sidek was there too so there was quite a lot of coaching stuff. the event was just okay, i didn't go for the one last year but apparently the turnout this year was not so good. probably because of the location.

Ho well I was half-expecting it already and didn't put any hopes on him being there. No replacement, of course. I didn't hear any complaints from the people around me but can't be too sure about that.

I hope the Malaysian players will have good 2-day rest. They probably did a lot more than they expected or what they were told beforehand, particularly the doubles' players.

It was a real shame, I went and like everyone else was really looking forward to seeing Taufik, I think lots of people were disappointed. :(

It would have been nice to see LCW play properly but he had no one to play against.

The game between Blair and Clarke and KKK and TBH was good but not too serious, though in the second game the Malaysians did step it up a gear and the score in that game reflected it!

The Malaysian players and Clarke and Blair were really good though and put on a great show for the crowd and played some mini games with some of the juniors. :)

Also Rexy was there which was just superb, he did some coaching, played some games and was his usually jokey self. He was the highlight of the day for me. :D

The other thing which was disappointing was the raffle they organised for the rackets. I went last year and then it wasn't actually the players rackets but brand new versions of the model that they used. But this year I think there was only one racket like this, the rest were just Tactic rackets restrung and stencilled to look like Yonex rackets. :(

If it wasn't for the wonderful efforts of all the players and coaches I would have been a bit disappointed but I feel they all put in the extra effort to try and make sure the fans were not left disappointed by Taufik's no show. They were all a shining examples of how professional badminton players should behave. I now respect them 10 times more than I did before. :D

Did you tell that to the Msian team? If not, ask Ants to relay the message.

Too bad LCW had no one to play with, he can always play with his coach, Misbun or England's MS coach, since this was an exhibition thingy.

He he, you sure will cheer all the way for LCW, KKK/TBH ? If ever you watch England vs Msia ?:D

agree with you about the rackets alaric.. last year it was the players rackets. this year it was tactic rackets in disguise. i won one and made sure to select the right one. i chose the head metallix 6000 instead of the tactics, since i already have a tactic 8000. shame really.

I didn't, but I hope that Ants will read this and pass the message on. They were superb. They signed autographs posed for pictures with any fans that wanted them, they could not do enough to please their fans. They were TRUE stars. :D

Sadly there was no England coaches, but LCW did some training with KKK TBH and Misbun.

I watched KKK and TBH win at the AE last year and cheered for them all the way. I hope they will do it again this year, sadly even though they are very good I don't think Blair and Clarke are good enough to win. :(

And I hope LCW will win the singles, he deserves it he has worked so hard and just seems like such a nice guy. :)

I was shouting "Boleh" last year but I was in the middle of all the Chinese fans who were shouting "Jai You" so I was a bit worried that might beat me up but that didn't stop me. :p

Hopefully this year I will be in with some of the Malaysian fans. :)

disappointed to hear that greed is the factor Taufik didn't show up in the exhibition match. ah well.

The one sad fact is that Taufik Hidayat chose to let me down despite many attempts to get him to honour his agreement to play which he gave me when I asked him and agreed terms on the 16th January in Kuala Lumpur (with Rexy as a witness). For the last week he has demanded that his appearance fee be doubled. He even had the cheek the day before the event (Saturday) to meet up with some Indonesians (I presume living in Birmingham) and told them he wasn't going to play thereby prompting them to e-mail me Saturday eve to say they wouldn't come because he wouldn't be there!!!! I suppose the NSPCC and Help the Aged charities mean nothng to him.

That's no excuse. A man is only as good as his word. TH's arrogance/attitude really stinks.

Oldhand
03-04-2008, 02:10 PM
Assuming George had earlier told Taufik about the charities, it's indeed shameful that the player asked for an appearance fee.

Is he so hard up now that he needs to profit from helping old people?

The subsequent demand for a doubling of the fee is shocking and contemptible :(

This is just one more reason of me being critical about TH. I respect his on court talent but his attitude.....could be alot better. I feel vindicated of what's i've posted about him before. He has the nerve to call some other players arrogant...

I see LCW as the hardest working player around. Hope he can extends his top form into 08 OG. Nice to see kkk/tbh are so relaxed in the AE exhibition. Question is can they switch on the get-serious button when real game start. I think rexy should carry a whipping belt at the court side to remind this MD pair to get serious:p

just some pics from the event. i just want to say that all the players that DID come were simply amazing both in perfromance and in character. they signed so many autographs, gave coaching tips to the audience, PLAYED with audience members and chatted with them. All this with a smile on their face. SPECIALLY Rexy.. he was out of this world with his trickshots and ever so entertaining. Lee chong wei is a genuine nice chap.

Thats me with rexy, and my yonex bag being signed by all the players : )

looking forward to more autographs at the all england :D

It is difficult for us, normal ppl to raise fund, but, it is much more easier for sport celebrities to do so...sigh!!!!

So disappointed to hear that TH is such kind of player!!! Really lost respect on him on court or off court.

I don't know what are his fans' feeling when he do that!!!
..(i'm just speaking as an INA-born person)..i don't know what came about Taufik, but that action/attitude by Taufik was quite appalling, to say the least:o..I hope Taufik can make it up, somehow, someway even without him doing any exhibition (e.g. extended photo/autograph session for those fans who came)..

Oldhand
03-06-2008, 01:38 AM
Comment is one thing and branding is another.

I'd hesitate to brand Taufik Hidayat either positively or negatively based on this incident and the little we actually know about it.

The key issue is what Taufik knew or didn't know about this event ;)

Assuming that he knew it was a charitable event for noble causes, then...
- if he asked for money, that is shameful
- if he asked for more money, that is disgusting
- if he boycotted the exhibition when denied more money, that is despicable.

On the other hand, assuming that he believed it to be a commercial or promotional event, then...
- if he asked for money, that is expected
- if he asked for more money, that is opportunistic
- if he boycotted the exhibition when denied more money, that is inevitable

So, what did Taufik know about this event that we don't?
Perhaps we should wait before reloading any cannons ;)

abedeng
03-06-2008, 01:44 AM
I concur, maybe George as the organizer could provide additional clarification on this.

As flamboyant or stubborn as Taufik is, it is very difficult to believe that he would knowingly ask for more money for a charity exhibition.

Still, my PAW against him for tonight's match stays ...... :D

The way the different posts have stated, looks like :
a) Earlier Organiser told Taufik it's for charity, Taufik agreed
b) Later, Taufik heard from somewhere it's not really charity but for commercial, so pulled out, when pressed, purposely doubled appearance fee so he can get out of it. i.e. he didnt want the $$$, it's just an excuse.

We still wouldnt know till we hear Taufik's side of the story.
Doesnt mean this George guy is a bad guy or anything, could just be misunderstanding.

i say we all hold fire till we hear georges reply guys... im also huge supporter of hidayat. but from what i read on badders.com from george:

"The one sad fact is that Taufik Hidayat chose to let me down despite many attempts to get him to honour his agreement to play which he gave me when I asked him and agreed terms on the 16th January in Kuala Lumpur (with Rexy as a witness). I suppose the NSPCC and Help the Aged charities mean nothng to him."

It doesnt look very good for th at the mo... still.. its best to wait and not speculate even more.

Email reply from george:

Hi Zed,

Thanks for your support mate. It is much appreciated.

I couldn't see the thread you referred to on your e-mail or on Badders.com. But I presume BC is Badminton Central so will look on that.

Could you do me a great favour please?

Could you post something on Badders.com as that is where I have posted the true reason as to why Taufik was not there Sunday.

Incidentally, I saw him yesterday afternoon at the All England and gave him a piece of my mind. He called for his two coaches Lius Pongoh and Mulyo Handoyo for support or maybe he thought I was going to hit him.

Anyway despite me berating him about his appalling lack of concern for all the people who came so far to see him (one chinese group came from Folkestone and were so disappointed as they had come only to see him) he was unconcerned.

What can you say about him? He needs to grow up as you so rightly said.

Keep in touch,

Kind regards,

George

FROM GEORGE ON BADDERS.COM: PLS READ:

I have been reading a lot of comments about this event and Taufik's boycotting of it on Badminton Central. I don't ave an account there so will post my repliy here.

I want to clear this up once and for all.

I MET HIM ON 16 JAN AT THE PUTRA STADIUM. I WAS WITH REXY AS I WAS VISITING HIM ON HOLIDAY. TAUFIK AGREED TO DO THIS EVENT FOR THE SUM OF £500 WITH REXY PRESENT. I TOLD HIM THAT IT WAS FOR CHARITY - INITIALLY I SAID NSPCC AND LOROS (A LEICESTERSHIRE BASED CAHRITY BUT DECIDED TO REPLACE WITH HELP THE AGED AS IT WAS STAGED OUTSIDE LEICESTER) HE ASKED COULD I PAY MORE I SAID I WILL TRY DEPENDING ON TICKET SALES (BUT I NEVER INTENDED DOUBLE!) I SENT HIS COACH LIUS PONGOH AN E-MAIL WHEN I RETURNED FROM MALAYSIA AT THE END OF JANUARYCONFIRMING TAUFIKS PARTICIPATION AND ATTACHING THE PROMO POSTER (WHICH EVERYONE HAS SEEN) IT CLEARLY STATED THE EVENT WAS FOR CHARITY.

LIUS PONGOH E-MAILED ME SEVERAL TIMES DURING FEB ASKING THAT THE FEE BE DOUBLED. LIUS THEN E-MAILED ME IN THE FINAL WEEK BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING ME TAUFIK'S MOBILE NO. AND ASKING I SPEAK DIRECTLY WITH HIM. I SENT TAUFIK AN SMS (OR TEXT AS WE SAY IN UK) ON THE THURSDAY B4 THE SUNDAY EVENT. HE DID NOT RESPOND. I RANG HIM AT 7.30PMON SATURDAY TO HIS HOTEL ROOM IN BIRMINGHAM. HE KEPT REPEATING SPEAK TO LIUS WHEN I ASKED HIM ARE YOU PLAYING? HE THEN PUT THE PHONE DOWN ON ME. I DROVE TO BIRMINGHAM ARRIVING AT AROUND 9.30PM AND RANG HIM FROM RECEPTION. HE ANSWERED AND WAS (UNDERSTANDABLY) TIRED HAVING ARRIVED THAT AFTERNOON. HE SAID HELLO AND THEN THE LINE WENT DEAD - HE PUT THE PHONE DOWN AS I SAID HELLO TAUFIK A COUPLE OF TIMES.

TAUFIK TOLD ME YESTERDAY (WEDS) AT THE ALL ENGLAND THAT I HAD NOT REPLIED TO ANY OF LIUS' E-MAIL REQUESTS FOR THE FEE TO BE DOUBLED. I DENIED THAT. HE CALLD FOR LIUS (WHO ARRIVED WITH MULYO HANDOYO - TAUFIK'S LONG TERM COACH AND MENTOR) WHO CONFIRMED THAT I HAD REPLIED AND THAT HE (LIUS) HAD PASSED ON ALL MY E-MAILS TO TAUFIK.

THE CONVERSTAION WAS GETTING NOWHERE WITH TAUFIK DISAGREEING THAT HE HAD DONE ANY WRONG AND EVEN SAYING THAT IF HE PLAYED EXHIBITIONS HE WOULD GET $2000 AT LEAST.

For the record due to the low attendance figures (268) there is no money to pay to charity so I will wite out personal cheques fro £100 each to the two charities.

You may also wish to know that I had to pay the other players. I couldn't pay what they expected but divided the profit by the 5 of them.

This sort of thing makes me wonder about human nature at a time when eveyone seems out to get what eveer they can and don't care about those less fortunate than themselves. I came from a very poor background almost dying as a very young child. I came to England in 1959 as a 3 year old and adopted by an englaish soldier flourisehd in England. I made my acreer in the Army encouraged by my father who served for 26 years and now coach badminton professionally and retail badminton equipment.

AS I SAID TO ROB BLAIR AND CLARKY YESTERDAY I WILL CONTINUE TO RUN THESE EVENTS DESPITE ALL THE STRESS IT CAUSES ME BECAUSE I LOVE THIS SPORT SO MUCH (GOD ON;LY KNOWS HOW MUCH!) AND URGE YOU READING THIS TO SUPPORT AND SPREAD THE WORD AROUND SO WE GET GOOD NUMBERS NEXT TIME.

AS FOR TAUFIK, I ONLY HOPE WHEN HIS TIME COMES TO MEET THE MAKER, HE HAS MADE AMENDS.

ok huangkwokhau.. i will let him know now.

i think that was a very honest and emotional post from george.. he is an awesome guy and has done a lot for the sport in england.

lets just say i respect him a lot more than i respect taufiq.

i dont know wot else to say regarding this matter. i was really a big fan of th.. i heard a lot of rumours in the past regarding his childish behaviour. now i can confirm those rumours to be true. Believe me, ppl drove so far and spent so much money for the up close and personal experiance to see th in action.. to talk to him, get his autograph.. and just meet such an awesome player.. we were left so dissapointed. we assumed he was not well.. but when we found out the real reason, the dissapointment turned to anger.

very sad indeed

I really feel for George and salute him for what he's doing for the game.
It's certainly more than what I have done or will possibly ever do.

What's supremely ironic here is that, finally, no money went to any charity (except for what George has decided to donate from his overstretched pocket).

It appears that whatever money was raised was divided between those who exhibited their skills, which was supposedly 'for charity'!

So, allow me to ask this question:
Which player did anything at all for the two charities mentioned?

George Frith

Rexy Mainaky, Misbun Sidek, Robert Blair and Anthony Clark asked for nothing. I felt it only right to pay them but Rexy refused to take anything.

Doesnt mean this George guy is a bad guy or anything, could just be misunderstanding.
...hmm, i had thought the same also, as the misunderstanding part about playing for charity came early (perhaps for Taufik, he would usually receive a bit more)..But then it (the doubling on appearance fee) could also be an excuse for TH to skip this event (like you mentioned also, eaglehelang)..
Still, i see it, after i read George's email and after reading he met & attempted to meet w/Taufik to confirm his participation, Taufik didn't keep his promise..

...
(rest of George's email content snipped for brevity)..yes, appreciate it George and zeddie for sharing that..:)
So, now, is there any chance for Taufik to "redeem" himself or "compensate" what had happened, if it's indeed a matter of misunderstanding? If it's a matter of taking away his personal time for not doing the exhibition, perhaps simply having an extended photo/autograph session would work? I think most fans would be glad if Taufik were to take up on that offer, since doing the earlier exhibition would take away his personal time also.
George, any chance you can try to talk a way to Taufik/his coaches and re-offer my suggestion, since he's still in England?..:cool:

its fantastic to see people such as yourself george organising charity events, and great to see stars such as rexy, sidek clark, blair and co. playing and giving their time for charity, i hope they will continue to promote their sport like this in the future. As for taufik? i dont think i can muster words to explain what i think, going back onm your word is a cardinal sin, and doubling your appeareance fees for a CHARITY event is just a shocking i dont think anyone in the badminton world would of expected.

again many thanks to George for organising the events, the many people and players who help to make these events take place. I hope he continues to do so in the future

Thanks, George, for your clarification. Though I must say a few things may have got muddled up when you had to contact Taufik or respond to email via Lius Pongoh. I have often found that going right to the source is the best way.

Not that I am defending Taufik here. The fact that he knows that it's for charity should be enough to make an appearance, though he may have overestimated the scale of this event (thinking it's a big draw), thus the request for doubling of fee. Taufik is a big name among the badminton fraternity, so his expectations are probably higher.

even if not for charity, TH earned much of his wealth from badminton. His fan base is from all over the world and not just indonesians. Any decent man in his position would have at least give something back to badminton like promoting the sports that been so good to him. TH better perform in AE or else the £500 was the best deal he could have gotten.

Thank you, George, and zeddie, for putting your side of the story up, and kudos to George for the work and effort, culminating with a big heart to right everything.

Unfortunately, we, as human nature, extend everything good to "great people," like Taufik, who is a phenomenal badminton player. Business/profit and charity is quite a scope away from the badminton arena, and as witnessed here, does not overlap.

I would suggest that the logistics and management of such events be relegated to people more suited to deal with "the real world," so misunderstandings like this is accounted for early, rather than on the eve of the event.

I hope this does not detract you (George, zeddie) from attempting this kind of event in the future, as human decency and big-heartedness is appreciated a whole lot more, in the long run.

Just got back from Birmingham and the quarter finals.

Ironic that Taufik lost the match he should have played Sunday thus earning him only $750 as losing quarter finalist. Had he played my exhibition he would have earned a guaranteed £500 ($1000) and if he had been prepared to speak to me on the Saturday prior to the event and haggled I would most certainly have paid him £1000 ($2000) as I have a close friend who I coach who on attending my Saturday class 4 - 6pm and learning the situation regarding Taufik wanting more money offerred to pay the extra £500.

Off to bed now as I have a whole day of coaching starting at 9am.

I'm back in Birmingham Sunday for the finals.

I m wondering why this kind of exhibition match scheduled just 2 days before such a prestigious tournament in badminton?
Even for good reason, I'm sure the timing was not really that right.

I'm sure if the same case happen in tennis, those pros won't do it. Imagine if you invite Maria Sharapova to play exhibition match just 2 days before Wimbledon?!

I guess TH can just simply refuse the invitation in this case, but asking for money give no excuse for people to defend him. What a shame!

Its not ideal but what can you do considering that these pros are only here due to the all england open. When it ends they will all fly back home (or those that lose early will fly back home already) meaning that setting it after the event may also be troublesome. I think that the numbers at the event was so low was due to it clashing with mothers day also...

Well, I'm not trying to defend TH. And I do not want to 'judge' him either.

But I guess we must know not everyone in the world know how to say 'no' in a nice way. And not everybody in the world have a good communication skill.

And I m pretty sure TH really did not want to play. Read from what George wrote: "many attempts".

That just my opinion. :)

What a sad outcome...If you give someone your word you should stick by it. Even if TH changed his mind closer to the event he should just be honest and state the reasons for not wanting to participate.

If TH really did not want to play(for whatever reason) but asked for more money as a get out clause then that was really naive of him to do so..if he chose not to play because the appearance fee wasnt enough then thats just pure greed! What a letdown to his fans.
