View Full Version : All-England 2008: Day 1 QUAL (Mar 4)
hcyong 03-03-2008, 08:34 PM MS
Pretty strong field even in the qualifiers
1st qualifying spot
Top seed: Lu Yi
Other seed: Nguyen Tien Minh
Other notables: Hsieh Yu Hsin, Tan Chun Seang (in Nguyen's half)
Prediction: Nguyen to beat Lu. But he has tough half, and since all matches are played within the day, may not have enough to beat Lu who has relatively much easier draw.
2nd qualifying spot
Top seed: John Moody
Other seed: Richard Vaughan
Other notables: Poompat, Arvind Bhat, Gong Weijie (in Moody's half) Kenichi Tago, Roman Spitko (in Vaughan's half)
Prediction: Tago to beat Poompat
3rd qualifying spot
Top seed: Dicky Palyama
Other seed: Bobby Milroy
Other notables: Scott Evans, Kasper Oedum (in Palyama's half) Tommy Sugiarto (in Milroy's half)
Prediction: Sugiarto to beat Palyama (or Evans)
4th qualifying spot
Top seed: Andrew Dabeka
Other seed: Eric Pang
Other notables: Shon Seung Mo, Chetan Anand (in Pang's half)
Prediction: Shon
hcyong 03-03-2008, 08:46 PM WS
1st qualifying spot
Seed: Elizabeth Cann
Other notables: None
Prediction: Cann. Apparently kind draw for Cann who even has a bye.
2nd qualifying spot
Seed: Salakjit Ponsana
Other notables: Anu Nieminen (in Ponsana's half) Adriyanti Firdasari, Soratja (in other half)
Prediction: Firdasari to beat Ponsana, but tough prediction to make
3rd qualifying spot
Seed: Julia Wong
Other notables: Pai Min Jie, Xing Aiying (in other half from seed)
Prediction: Xing to beat Wong, considering Uber Cup form
4th qualifying spot
Seed: Wang Yihan
Other notables: Susan Hughes (in Wang's half) Pia Zebadiah (in other half)
Prediction: Wang to beat Pia
badMania 03-03-2008, 09:04 PM Men's Singles Qualification R1:
Tommy Sugiarto vs Bobby Milroy [3] -- Bobby, and possibly Peter Mikkelsen and Dicky Palyama will be the opponents to face in the road to the main draw.
Women's Singles Qualification R1:
Adriyanti Firdasari vs Soratja Chansrisukot -- a tricky match for Firda...she could eventually face 2 Thai players if she were to go all the way to the Final Round. She should face Charmaine Reid next.
Pia Bernadet Zebadiah vs Malgorzata Kurdelska -- should be a breeze for Pia, but, Wang Yihan will be the greatest hurdle if she want to qualify. Shruti Kurian should await her next.
Men's Doubles Qualification R1:
Anthony Clark/David Lindley vs Bona Septano/Mohd Ahsan -- tough matches await Bona/Ahsan in their first AE. They should lose here.
Women's Doubles Qualification R1:
Lita Nurlita/Nitya Krishinda vs Mooi Hing Yau/Ooi Yu Hang -- Lita/Nitya should progress to the main draw.
robin7 03-03-2008, 09:09 PM MS
4th qualifying spot
Top seed: Andrew Dabeka
Other seed: Eric Pang
Other notables: Shon Seung Mo, Chetan Anand (in Pang's half)
Prediction: Shon
The lucky Andrew Dabeka has taken Peter Gade's place in the main draw.

hcyong 03-03-2008, 09:09 PM MD
Pretty tame lineup in the MD.
1st qualifying spot
Don't know. The British pairs (Adcock/Middleton and Lewis/Roebuck) have pretty good chances, I guess. But Spitko/Fuchs is out to spoil their party.
2nd qualifying spot
Kawaguchi/Kawamae stands above the others in this section.
3rd qualifying spot
(Xu Chen/Zheng Bo v Blair/Eidestedt) v (Clark/Lindley v Ahsan/Septano). Your guess as good as mine. I think Clark/Lindley has the edge.
4th qualifying spot
Cho Gun Woo/Han Sang Hoon faces some Danish opposition, but should advance. I guess.
george@chongwei 03-03-2008, 09:21 PM camon tan chun seang!!!!.
george@chongwei 03-03-2008, 09:21 PM hope also julia wong will through to the main draw...
camon MALAYSIA!!
hcyong 03-03-2008, 09:28 PM WD
Even tamer affair in WD
1st qualifying spot
I like Chau Hoi Wah/Koon Wai Chee's chances against seeded McKee/Reid.
2nd qualifying spot
Goh Liu Ying/Ng Hui Lin should take this oppurtunity given the apparently weak opposition.
3rd qualifying spot
Meulendijks/Yao Jie faces British opposition.
4th qualifying spot
Maheswari/Nurlita if they can overcome Mooi/Ooi.
hcyong 03-03-2008, 09:40 PM XD
A bit better in the XD
1st qualifying spot
Seed: Cooper/Flavell
Other notables: Fuchs/Mette (in seed's half) Langridge/Nicholas, Tsai/Cheng (in other half)
Prediction: Beats me. Langridge/Nicholas if I have to venture a guess.
2nd qualifying spot
Seed: Tan/Woon
Other notables: Bowman/Bok (in seed's half), Roebuck/Wallwork (other half)
Prediction: Should be Tan/Woon for the taking but the Brits are XD experts. Must tread with caution.
3rd qualifying spot
Seed: Middleton/Smith
Other notables: Razif/Chong, Logosz/Munt (in other half from seed)
Prediction: Polish-English pairing looks strong here.
4th qualifying spot
Seed: Stoyanov/Eymard
Other notables: Wiratama/Chau, Cho Gun Woo/Ha Jung Eun (seed's half), Lim Kim Wah/Ng Hui Lin, Ohtsuka/Suetsuna (other half)
Prediction: hmmm ... Lim/Ng cannot be taken lightly, but I like the experience that Ohtsuka/Suetsuna has
hcyong 03-03-2008, 09:41 PM The lucky Andrew Dabeka has taken Peter Gade's place in the main draw.
http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showpost.php?p=802533&postcount=9
If he has been promoted, then Lu Yi must have been, too. Not showing in the draws yet, maybe in a few more hours.
madbad 03-03-2008, 10:11 PM If he has been promoted, then Lu Yi must have been, too. Not showing in the draws yet, maybe in a few more hours.
Yes, both Lu Yi (for Ronald Susilo) and Andrew Debaka (for PG) have been promoted to the main draw - confirmed by hauge among others.
tjl_vanguard 03-03-2008, 11:10 PM kinda boring for starting...
leonardklh 03-03-2008, 11:55 PM come on malaysians... ng hui lin and goh liu yin, julia wong, tan chun seang, mooi hing yau and ooi yu hang, lim khim wah, tan wee kiong and woon khe wei, razif latif and sabrina chong sook chin...
abedeng 03-04-2008, 02:03 AM Xing vs Julia would be a great match, if it happens. Last time around, Julia won in 3.
madbad 03-04-2008, 02:29 AM MS Qualification
Q1: With Lu Yi gone, that pretty much opens the path for Nguyen Tien Minh
Q2: I wonder if Gong Weijie can continue his miracle run. Moody is a pretty tough nut to crack and Tago should contend. I think Gong can take the Q2 spot
Q3: The youth of Tommy Sugiarto v the experience of Dicky Palyama. If Tommy continues to show mental strength, he'll secure the Q3 spot
Q4: Shon Seung Mo all the way
WS Qualification
Q1: Cakewalk for Elizabeth Cann
Q2: The 2 Thais and Firda should duke it out. An easier passage (including a bye) might tip it Salakjit Ponsana's way
Q3: A beauty of an encounter awaits in Julia Wong v Xing Aiying. Xing has to dispose of Pai Min Jie first while Julia has the much easier route. Like in Germany, Julia to win again
Q4: It would be a monumental upset if Wang Yihan did not clean house here
MD Qualification
Q1: Adcock/Middleton, playing on home soil should outlast the others
Q2: I'll flip a coin and say Adcock/George again because of home field advantage
Q3: Xu/Zheng should make it through
Q4: Han/Cho is the only Asian pair in the Q4 bracket and I think they'll have just enough to hold off the Danes
WD Qualification
Q1: The HK pair of Chau/Koon will have the edge
Q2: Pedersen/Schjoett-Kristensen will sweep past the weak MAS pair
Q3: Meulendijks/Yao Jie should win the Q3 spot
Q4: I think Mooi/Ooi could come out after some tough matches
XD Qualification
Q1: The TPE pair Tsai/Cheng to push aside the ENG challenge
Q2: Tan/Woon will face stiff challenges from the ENG pairs. They should be able to hold on
Q3: Logosz/Munt are underrated and will win this spot
Q4: A tough quarter with the JPN tandem of Ohtsuka/Suetsuna squeaking through
BC member smashie54, aka Lauren Todt (USA) will be playing against Solenn Pasturel (ENG) in the first qualification round. GOOD LUCK Lauren!
CYW2006 03-04-2008, 03:31 AM sorry off topic here...
may i ask what is the time different between england and malaysia?
thanks..
hcyong 03-04-2008, 03:32 AM List to qualifiers promoted to main draw:
MS
Lu Yi (v Kendrick Lee)
Andrew Dabeka (v Taufik Hidayat)
Effect to QUAL:
Nguyen is given an easier task to qualify as Q1
No difference to Q4 as Shon is expected to win either way.
WS
none
MD
Fuchs/Spitko (v Hwang Ji Man/Lee Jae Jin)
Effect to QUAL:
The Brits (3 pairs out of 4) will have an even easier time to grab Q1.
WD
McKee/Reid (v Ha Jung Eun/Kim Min Jung)
Effect to QUAL:
Easier to Chau/Koon to grab Q1.
XD
Stoyanov/Eymard (v Kindervater/Piotrowski)
Cooper/Flavell (v Q4)
Effect to QUAL:
Not much effect to Q1 as Stonayov/Eymard are not expected to grab Q1.
Hwang Ji Man/Kim Min Jung got promoted from Reserve to make Q4 much more interesting. They are now my favourites to take Q4. Q4 also comes with the prize of facing Cooper/Flavell in R32 of main draw.
hcyong 03-04-2008, 03:36 AM sorry off topic here...
may i ask what is the time different between england and malaysia?
thanks..
Either 7 or 8, depending on whether daylight saving is in effect.
Another good thing to remember is this. You know Malaysia is GMT+8. Well, GMT means Greenwich Meridian Time, which is in England. Therefore, England is GMT+0 (if no daylight saving).
CYW2006 03-04-2008, 04:09 AM thanks for reply so fast...

Lim/Ng didnt feature in Asia Juniors cos Ng Hui Lin was injured. That's why Lim/Ng's ranking is lower than Wee Kiong/Khe Wei. If not, they could be in the running for an OG spot.
+ Hui Lin's did good too with Goh in Uber qualifiers. Good crop of juniors
leonardklh 03-04-2008, 09:27 AM ng hui lin is a good player... + lim khim wah i think they are the best mixed double for malaysians (junior) now.. we will see how they faced the koreans...

robin7 03-04-2008, 11:10 AM Can Lim/Ng fight back?
Misty100 03-04-2008, 11:12 AM A glimpse of hope to topple the Korean after coming from behind to draw level at 19 all

3-5 on 2nd game...
madbad 03-04-2008, 12:14 PM I'm afraid it's not looking good for Lauren trailing 6-14 :(
ah well, Lauren lost, 21-17 / 21-6. gave a good fight back on the 1st game, but ran out in the 2nd. good effort though.
Bad results from the Jrs. However dont really expect them to advance to the Main draw. :(
madbad 03-04-2008, 12:31 PM Surprised to see Shon lost to Eric Pang rather easily. Perhaps he was exhausted from his efforts at the GO. Nguyen Tien Minh has advanced with a 21-17, 21-18 win over Jorgensen.
Tago levels with Gong 21-17 in 2nd
Tommy edges Dicky 21-19 in 1st
madbad 03-04-2008, 12:34 PM Wow, the schedule has the MS going back to back rounds. Rene Ulsing, who's just completed a 3 gamer will surely be killed by Eric Pang.
Dicky 2-3 Tommy
Gong 1-2 Tago
xlasher 03-04-2008, 12:35 PM I surprise to see Tommy can do good against Dicky....
Hopefully he can go to the main draw....
:cool::cool:
xlasher 03-04-2008, 12:39 PM I imagine.... Tommy go to the Main Draw.... defeat chong wei in the second round face TH but Th win and face SDk in the Semi and TH will be in the Final.... wow....:D:D:D
But I want to see TH vs LCW though.....
Gong Weijie and TAGO Kenichi are still on court. almost an hour already.
madbad 03-04-2008, 01:05 PM Tago outlasts Gong 21-15 in the rubber. 59 mins
Susan Huges beat Louise Carter 21-1 in the 2nd :eek:. Now that's a thrashing!
Tommy eases through 21-19, 21-11 over Dicky
Xing v Pai on now and will be a good match. Xing 2-0 Pai
Meanwhile Blair/Eidestedt has taken the opening game 22-20 over Xu Chen /Zheng Bo
badadum 03-04-2008, 01:11 PM Hmm, I've to say I'm impressed with Tommy. 3 Matches on the same day and the last two is within hour of each other.

i just noticed that Gong WJ played another 1:00 hrs match on 1st round, 30mins on 2nd round, no wonder he seems to have ran out losing in 59min in the 3rd round!
madbad 03-04-2008, 01:15 PM i just noticed that Gong WJ played another 1:00 hrs match on 1st round, 30mins on 2nd round, no wonder he seems to have ran out losing in 59min in the 3rd round!
The scheduling for the MS qualifying is NUTS! A real test of stamina, like in the old (OSS) days. But I suppose it could be said it's the same for everyone.

Still an impressive win for Tago! Especially considering Gongs 2-0 win over Sato in German Open!!
Bad draw for Tago though to have CJ in the first round :-(

madbad 03-04-2008, 01:24 PM Julia Wong lost the 1st game 21-17 to Dimova  Upset in the making?

Young Indo's MD is running out of steam though.
TrueBlue 03-04-2008, 01:44 PM quite interesting how the newbie next to clark behave and how the indos try to threaten him a bit. i like clarks style, quite cool.
madbad 03-04-2008, 01:44 PM Young Indo's MD is running out of steam though.
Looks like Clark/Lindley have done enough to dispatch of the INA youngsters, up 18-12 in the rubber.
Wong 11-9 Dimova in rubber
Xing 18-13 Pai in 2nd
TrueBlue 03-04-2008, 01:47 PM think the commentator doesent know what to say...
madbad 03-04-2008, 01:58 PM Wong scrapes through by the skin of her teeth 21-19 against the unfancied Dimova. MAS fans will be relieved yet worried. Still one more round of WS to come. Will the 49 mins of action have taken its toll on Wong. She plays the winner of Xing/Pie who are still on court. Xing 11-7 Pai (52 mins elapsed). One of them will be drained for sure.
huangkwokhau 03-04-2008, 04:04 PM Glad that Pia and Firda are thru to Main draw................
huangkwokhau 03-04-2008, 06:02 PM Surprise that SSM lost easily to Eric Pang.........
huangkwokhau 03-04-2008, 06:09 PM Han/Cho lost to Danish MD in 3 tight sets...........
badMania 03-04-2008, 06:58 PM Glad to see Tommy Sugiarto, Adriyanti Firdasari and Pia Zebadiah all qualified for the Main Draw. At least PBSI's efforts in sending them to All-England bear some fruits and these players gain at least 2220 valuable ranking pts.
Lita Nurlita/Nitya Krishinda also qualified.
Only Bona Septano/Mohd Ahsan failed to qualify...losing in the first round to the more experienced Anthony Clark/David Lindley.
Kenichi Tago, Nguyen Tien-Minh, and Xing Aiying all qualified as well, not a bad day for the Asian contingent.
abedeng 03-04-2008, 08:09 PM Tommy is fighting back for the 4th Thomas Cup MS spot. He should pass through Andrew Smith, and hopefully provide valuable PAWS pts for me .....:D

huh? I did think & look, 2X in fact, I really thought you were joking or being optismistic cos you were the 1st to post it - there was no offense meant. You all joke around ok, eagle serious not ok???;):D:D
The reason was my livescore board didnt show Wee Kiong/Khe Wei's match, even after I refreshed 2X. Much later only I got time to count, there were more than 4 matches on at the same time. In any case, my apologies, jangan marah.

Thank you. I expected Lauren to be Caucasian because of her name but she seems to have some Asian characteristics! :) She must have played well in the first game. I'm sure she will improve further with wider exposure! :)
