Hi guys, I just checked and found out that KLM is having special offers for flight flying to/from Jakarta.

Return flight from KLIA (KL) to SHIA (Jakarta) is just RM441 (including taxes, surchanges and reservation fee).

http://www.klm.com/travel/my_en/index_default.html

Return flight from LCCT (KL) to SHIA (Jakarta) is just RM402.98 (including taxes, surchanges and reservation fee).

http://www.airasia.com/site/my/en/home.jsp

I will most likely go for KLM.

Busway won't work without Govt coercion.

You need hiking up the parking charges, providing ample parking space at busway locations, or introduction of congestion charges/ERP ala London and S'pore.

I find it faster, walking .....

In some areas yes, it will be wiser to take a cab. But, I think Sudirman area is quite safe for tourists. I walked from Nikko Hotel to the New Grand Indonesia, almost the same distance from Mandarin Oriental (not Marina Mandarin, which is in SG :p) to Plaza Indonesia.

Guys, it is true that in Jakarta it is better to take a taxi rather than to walk. :o

As for the taxis... please use baby-blue colored cabs with the brand BLUE BIRD or the black cabs with the brand SILVER BIRD. From what I know, some of the red, pink, green, yellow, and purple colored ones you pick from the streets might not be safe. You could be taken somewhere remote and then robbed there... Oh, and some of the baby-blue colored taxis are not branded BLUE BIRDs. Beware... some are tourist traps. :(

However, any cab you take from your hotel should be fine because the hotel guards will not let any of the hanky-panky cabs in. I also believe the cabs from the airport, malls, and Istora building [where the Thomas Cup will be held] should also be fine. The guards over there will also throw away the non-legitimate cabs. :)

I try to keep minimum things on me when I walk on Jakarta's notorious streets. I still carry that classic Nokia HP (bought like 7-8 years back) which is now worth nothing but still working well. If possible, no credit cards on my "fake" LV wallet and just enough cash for the day (try to keep it to Rp 500k).

They still have bajaj in Jakarta? I thought Sutiyoso banished all of them.... or maybe I'm thinking becak instead..heh.
At any rate, stick with Bluebird taxi for best method of transportation. And I mean Bluebird...not any of the so-called "part of Bluebird group" ones...

What taxi's are the white ones? Not too bad either but definitely Bluebird is the reliable one.

if you're doubtful of the taxi/cab ... don't use one.. try another taxi. firstly you must check the taxi-driver ID. the face of driver must match with pic on the ID..

don't use taxi if the taxi-driver don't have an ID

I try to keep minimum things on me when I walk on Jakarta's notorious streets. I still carry that classic Nokia HP (bought like 7-8 years back) which is now worth nothing but still working well. If possible, no credit cards on my "fake" LV wallet and just enough cash for the day (try to keep it to Rp 500k).

Yup...no "blink-blink" accesories or fanciful handbags (for ladies) or gold chains, rings, etc (for uncles :o:p).

that classic 'heavy' Nokia HP is still useful.. it can be a 'weapon'.. you can throw it to a criminals face :D ..he..he

now you scare them.........hehe

As long as we avoid back alleys and private transportation (including private buses, bajajs and taxis), we should be fine. But the main thing is to show that we are not tourists (don't bring anything we don't need, excess jewellery, wear revealing/high class clothing, if need to walk, walk in groups - though I flouted the rules myself).

That is correct, showing confidence is one way to avoid unnecessary attention ...... and the sight of Loh's tripod may come in rather handy.:D

Of course, JKT is safe. No civil war and high frequency suicide bombs as often happen in Baghdad, Darfur or Kabul. I think main problems of this capital city are severe traffic jam (too many private cars), low quality mass transportation (bis TJ is ok but still far from comfortable atmosphere particularly in busy hours), and annual flood disaster.

For us who living in Jkt, Bis TJ is so helpful compare with the standard buses, Patas/Kopaja/Metro Mini which have poor condition (I have tried these public transportations). For foreigner, yeah Blue Bird Group is highly recommended.

I was asked by immigration officers on a few occasions in Bali and Batam for my visa. I reckon they wanted some money and had to patiently explain that Asean tourists do not need a visa to visit Indonesia.

Bajaj is dangerous too as Hauge mentioned. If you must try, go for short distance only, don't go alone and always ask the price before taking. Sometimes, bajaj can end up more expensive than cab if you don't bargain.

I think it would be fun to go for Angkot (public van) if we are in a big group. I remember I tried once two years ago with collegues (about 20 of us) for lunch from our office and it costed us only Rp20k (around US$2.15:eek:) for the whole car.

Always travel in group, NEVER walk alone and never dress like a tourist on street.

Dress like a tourist when entering the immigration hall. Well, if you dress like a businessman, prepare some money for the officers. If they ask, just pretend you don't understand Indonesian.

In many countries, a great majority of its citizens have nowhere else to go to because of their social, educational and financial condition. Only a few own that luxury of having the option to live elsewhere. And in most of the so-called better and more popular countries, they are very selective and the doors are closed to many.

I'm not too sure about escaping the Jakarta mob by dressing up as a player. All the male badminton fans will swoop down on you to have your autograph. Or to Venice where I almost got pickpoketed in the train. My better judgement told me to get away from a young man pretending to be reading a magazine. PJ, unless you have someone trustworthy as guide (say one of our INA friends), I would suggest you and Jen to take a cab to Istora for that day.

Next week I will know if I can change my schedules, if possible, I will reach Jakarta by 14th morning or noon and we can walk together to the stadium.

I 'd rather walk 20 mins than sit in a cab for 20 mins.
We cannot change our flight to morning because those are premium 'business' flights costing even more and it's now already 50+% more supporting our high class airline, SIA!
So it'll be great if your 14th flight is noon but we'll be ok.Jen is taekwondo, unknown belt!

Yes indeed, walking is more interesting than cab fare, and if I change my flights, it would definitely be morning/noon. But there are other alternatives, like contacting the other guys already there (Ants, Terry, Fastdrop, Hau-ge, X-Ball), and see if they can provide "escort service". The sight of Hau-ge and X-Ball will strike "fear" into the hearts of wannabe troublemakers ...... :D
