Yeah, too many errors from LCW (mostly unforced).
LD anticipated the shots very well and replied some seemingly unretrievable shots, that frustrated LCW and he started making unforced errors. LCW was shouting in frustration towards the end of the 2nd game (trailing 17-18, I guess) when he sent the shuttle into the net.

well, normally the favourites doesn't win OG. So, the pressure is on LD to maintain his form. The trouble now is that there's no other player except LCW who can stop China domination. Any other countries you can think of? Again, credit to china for having so many talents. Lets see what happens when come to the OG. No point speculating.
Well he is also the favorite here right? His first round exit on the previous OG will also serve a great reminder for him to play better in the coming OG. It is not speculating, just predicting.

Maybe it's better for LCW to put himself down a little bit, to the level of PSH. Just keep the game going, don't think too much about winning.
It's interesting that it seems even Sairul was thinking about beating LD. He crumbled when that task seemed unreachable in 1st game at 13:15.

Are they due to LD playing well or are they due to LCW too nervous?
Others: Lin 24, Lee 10. Sharp contrast!
There's no rule to credit a player who hits more winners.
NSS favours the one who commits a lot less unforced errors.
LCW gifted LD in G1 but LD deserved it because he was clearly prepared and came out firing.
LCW's performance in G2 is a good sign even if he lost.

I agree. LD is different from the previous "most favorites". ZJH in 92 is old; DJ, TH and LD in 96,00,04 are young prodigies, they were too excited and thought they can crush anyone.
LD in 08 is at his best (physically + mentally).

Sounds like you misunderstood me.
I ask because I think on paper, LD only has slight advantage; So there must be a reason, either LD played super-well and forced LCW to make many errors, or LCW cannot deal with his winning desire and forced himself to make many errors.

That's exactly true.
LD is lucky in some sense because TH basically stopped pursuing badminton glory after 05 WC. In 06, even after winning his 1st WC, LD was still not truly confident, as we can see in his clashes with a much weaker TH. But after 07 WC I think LD was fully mature.

I think eagle is expressing her new discovery. :D
I am always happy when LD is truly strong and win without any controversy.
But on the other hand, I don't think LD is superior to LCW by this much (21:13). So to me, the situation is comparable to LD vs. TH WC05 final, where LD was by no means so much inferior to TH (3:15).

For me, this pair will never be a top top pair. XZB is too big and stiff to cope with faster play and when they are defending and despite his size his Smash is not very big. ZY is not much of a problem really, although sometimes makes mistakes at critical points.
He/Yu are much faster and powerful, with this added manueverability they can overcome difficult situations that can lead to match changing results.

i agree with your points about XZB, he is a big guy (perhaps too big) and his manueverability is compromised as a result. and his smash technique is strange.. he is very full frontal when he smashes, and the end product is not all that awesome. perhaps a change of technique (to something similar to FHF?) is the answer but not sure. HHB and YY have more potential. Still XZB and ZYW very consistent.

Sponsors will not stay if players are not made accountable for weak performances.
Players are accountable for losing, but it will not improve their future performances if they are given a grilling by administrators and sponsors as to why they lost.
This is what the coach should do, and then the coach should absorb this criticism then alter it into a positive outcome for the player himself. You must remember that the players are not politicians, businessmen and hard nose individuals who can shrug off this pressure. They are basically kids who have athletic capability and who must be guided into realising this capability into results.
If they receive this grilling which they are not trained to take (they are trained to play) then they will have severe mental problems both in their training and then in their gameplay.

I guess they have too much pressure. And don't forget HHB does not need to worry about MD.

If this is true (and I am not doubting you) then there is no wonder LCW cannot perform at his peak in finals. He will be fearing losing, rather than being confident of winning. BAM/NSC must surely review this?
"Msian hordes" cannot comment, will be considered too bias, he he.
Errrr, that's the review loh, review why fail in AE. For sure NSC & BAM want to meet up with the players & coaches when they come back to hear '"from the horses mouth what are the problems" and 'worried with players' performance'. This came out in the malay press Berita Harian, 10 & 12 March 2008. Later also in Malay Mail, after AE losses.
Basically, it's the heightened anxiety as to the OG medal chase. Normal-lah, this kind of thing.

Exactly. LYB did very well (maybe too well sometimes :D ) on this aspect.

Indeed, with this title in the Swiss Open, He/Yu will be ranked no 3.
He Hanbin/Yu Yang -- 68850 (need to defend 7000 Asian Championships title though)
Flandy Limpele/Vita Marissa -- 68180
Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen -- 66760 (no India Open, only Badminton Asia Championships left...and HAVE TO WIN IT to be guaranteed a spot!)
Wow...how about MS....CJ...after withdrawed from Swiss Open...out of No.4 already ...?

An interesting thing is that Flandy/Vita played far from well this year. As if they would like to see 3 Chinese pairs in OG. :D
They look disinterested...maybe the big bonuses at the end of the year (esp for Vita Marissa) did distract them a little bit
Basically, INA is only relying on them for the Olympics 2008....no big hope also...maybe a bronze medal? The big hope is till on the ever so inconsistent Nova/Butet.

i agree with your points about XZB, he is a big guy (perhaps too big) and his manueverability is compromised as a result. and his smash technique is strange.. he is very full frontal when he smashes, and the end product is not all that awesome. perhaps a change of technique (to something similar to FHF?) is the answer but not sure. HHB and YY have more potential. Still XZB and ZYW very consistent.
I nickname him the robot...I always think he looks so stiff and limited when he plays. unlike ZB who appears very supple despite his large build.
Yes they are consistent, but only to a point, when playing mid level pairs I would back them every time, but against top players in QF onwards I do not have confidence, maybe only 30%, this can mean sometimes they win if opponents have off day, but mostly they will lose at this stage.
He/Yu hav potential to grow into good pair, they are still young (22?)

I respect what you said and I believe it could be detrimental if they are pressurised in that sense. Perhaps I should have clarified more -- every time I read in the press on the players being interviewed it always has to do with BAM trying to ask in the most proper way what went wrong and BAM trying to help them sort out their problems, even though they were told that they need to change.
And this is why some people here think BAM is too soft with the players. I think some kind of accountability is good because it would make them not stray from their objectives. As you said they are young (and are not politicians) and they tend to lose focus sometimes. It is no different from being told off by the teachers in class.

Well shouldn't he have to account if he loses tamely ? I would want to know too if I can get him to report to me.
Sponsors will not stay if players are not made accountable for weak performances.
:D was refering to earlier posts. Bananakid mis-interpret my reply.
Yeah, LCW also must give you 20 page explaination. Not forgetting WMC for 'losing tamely' to Zhou Mi (that was the headline in the Star), he he
KKK/TBH 100 pages plus XXXX punishments ;). who else , master X ball?

Rexy believes in the 'stick' to get them focused. Young players will lose focus - it is a tough sport and you have to be very disciplined to keep winning.

Yes some accountability is required, but is it the form of this accountability that is the most crucial. For example in MAS I get the impression that the players who have performed in the past will continue to be backed with finance and resources as MAS believe they will perform again. If they don't MAS want to know why. (eg Hafiz)
In ENG there is a monetary system wherby the players are accountable for themselves. There is different level of funding availble to players depending on there level of performances over the last xyrs. If they don't perform then coaches and psychologists may well help them understand why but at the end of the day if they continue to underperform they will lose funding and therfore drop off the chart.
I am not saying MAS/ENG are good/bad, just that there must be a better way to improve MAS performances. MAS players have equal or similar talent to CHN players, but never seem to make it.

hehe yeh the Robot is quite apt nickname for him. I think ppl give his smash more credit than it deserves. ZB is very similar to Zhang Jun in many respects and perhaps that is why the GL/ZB partnership is so strong. I have always regarded XZB/ZYW as a pair which will help clear the way for the no.1 pair, which was ZJ/GL and now ZB/GL. However, it appears HHB/YY have the potential to be considered a pair which can "share the glory" with ZB/GL but its still too early to say that.
are England scared of CHN players? how did Eng beat IND's 2 top XD pairs and then wilt in the final. As sooon as I saw Clark/Kellogg make the final I knew HHB/YY had the title wrapped up. I realy do think Eng are intimidated by the CHN to a material extent.

There is another point. When KKK/TBH, Zakry/Latif, Lin/Tazary came out and rexy was in sole chage of them they improved, got good results, then their form dropped off. Why? Yes opposition may have worked out how to play them, but I would think (knowing what I know now) that it is possible that when the results were rising they were left alone, but once their level plateau'd is it posible that they were held accountable and this extra pressure inhibited their ability to perform?

Exactly...spot on....players who rose up "too fast" tend to crumble mentally when they underachieve subsequently. It's this pressure of "afraid to lose" which sets in into most players. They undergo this phase, including Lin Dan himself I would say.
