Why is LCW even involved? Shouldn't this now be about finding the next MAS MS star? Those in LCW's group just have their opportunities shut down.

This tournament is just like SS Finals , which suppose to held somewhere in Decemeber last year
Senior/Juniors who gained enough points for qualifying to this finals will be group together. No age preference.
For MAS Juniors, they can always participate in Pahang Open, Kedah Open etc for a start. Start earning their chances and ply their trade from there..

no doubt the favourite will be LCW... unless injury or walkover...

in MD, KKK-TBH should take it, but considering their form now, quite difficult...

Which part? Not winning Grand Prix? They're too distracted, looks like the uncles may take it. ;)

If the OG thingy, nope KKK doesnt share that optimism that Rexy wouldnt drop them- he's the 'bad boy' mah. If KKK/TBH are in for OG but still not buddy buddy with each other, post OG, very high possibility will split.

The Star quoted LCW saying that he intend to skip the ABC which will be on 15 Apr because he is tired, exhausted and all. Now, whats puzzling is that since the man is tired, exhausted and worn out why is he taking part in the Malaysian National Grand Prix which is gonna start on 25??? Wouldnt it make cow sense for the man to skip the National Grand Prix for some much needed 'R&R'?

Or is it that the MNGP is a much easier tourney, a walk in the park? All LCW need to do is just show up and he will successfully take the MNGP for a record 8th time or something??

Malaysia Boeh!

i think most of the senior players are encouraged to attend the grand prix nationals, sort of like giving back to the badminton community and encouraging local interest in the sport. most of the games are going to be physically less demanding for him anyway.

National GP Finals loses glamour with pullouts

By Ajitpal Singh

24 March, 2008
THE 2007 Proton National Grand Prix Finals where the national champion is decided, will lose some of its glamour as three of the country's better known shuttlers -- Muhd Hafiz Hashim, Wong Choong Hann and Wong Mew Choo -- will not be competing in the event starting in Alor Star, Kedah, tomorrow. Choong Hann, the World No 15, has decided to skip the event and instead concentrate on the India Open on April 1-6.

The 31-year-old does not want to risk injury or suffer from fatigue by competing in the GP Finals as he needs to collect as many ranking points as possible in India in an effort to qualify for the Beijing Olympics.

Hafiz, meanwhile, is giving the tournament a miss as he has still not recovered from an Achilles tendon injury sustained in the recent All-England.

With Hafiz, the World No 23, not entered for the India Open either, he can kiss goodbye to his chances of qualifying for Beijing.

Top women's singles, Mew Choo, last year's China Open winner, did not qualify for the GP Finals and will also be skipping the India Open.

Mew Choo can afford to give India a miss as being the World No 9 she has already confirmed her ticket to the Olympics.

Kim Hock said Choong Hann decided to skip the GP Finals to concentrate on his training.

"He (Choong Hann) wants to concentrate on polishing up his skills after failing to perform in the recent All-England and Swiss Open," said Kim Hock yesterday.

"The India Open is more important to Choong Hann as a good performance there would gain him valuable ranking points to confirm his place for the Olympics."

"However, on Hafiz, I am still in the dark over his injury problems."

Kim Hock confirmed that Mew Choo was advised to skip the India Open as she hasn't yet recovered from an injury to her right knee.

"We do not want to risk playing Mew Choo as if she aggravates her injury she could miss the Olympics," Kim Hock said.

With the absence of Choong Hann and Hafiz, World No 2 Lee Chong Wei will have little trouble clinching his sixth straight GP Finals men's singles title.

The tussle for the women's crown is likely to be between 2005 national champion Julia Wong and Anita Raj Kaur.

The men's doubles event is expected to be a hotly contested affair as all of the country's top pairs have confirmed their entries with former World No 1 Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Choong Tan Fook -Lee Wan Wah, starting as favourites.

Gan/Lin beat KKK/TBH in rubber sets. Not entirely surprisingly from recent turn of events

I'm more surprised the BJSS MD can drag our uncles to rubber sets.
Ong Jien Guo/Goh Wei Shern IMO were the future hopes for MAS MD.

Gan-Lin chalk up first-ever victory over Koo-Tan
By LOGANATH VELLOO
ALOR STAR: National pair Gan Teik Chai-Lin Woon Fui pulled off a stunning win over top seeds and defending champions Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong in a Group B match of the Proton National Grand Prix Finals at the Kedah BA Hall here last night.
It was the first-ever win for Teik Chai-Woon Fui over the highly-rated pair in a competitive match, winning a tightly contested battle 21-19, 19-21, 21-18 in 70 minutes.
Despite the defeat, Kien Keat-Boon Heong could still make it to semis if they win their final group match against Chew Choon Eng-Hong Chien Hun tonight.
“Even when we were trailing 8-11 in the decider, we did not push the panic button and continued to play our defensive game,” said Woon Fui.
“Our key to success was to dictate the play and force our opponents to imitate our style of play. Although there is still a long way to go in the tournament, it feels good to finally get a breakthrough win over them.”
In Group B, second seeds Ong Soon Hock-Tan Bin Shen and veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah booked their places in the semis after chalking up hard-fought victories last night.
The two pairs will battle it out tonight to determine the group winners.
Top seed Julia Wong is through to the women's singles semi-finals after brushing aside Sannatasah Saniru 21-10, 21-12 for her second victory in Group A. Also through to the semi-finals from the same group is Vivian Hoo, who also bagged her second win with a 21-15, 21-18 win over Sonia Cheah.
With both Mew Choo and Lydia Cheah not competing in the women's singles, Julia is the clear favourite to regain the title she won in 2005.
“Despite being the favourite, I am not taking anything for granted as there are players like Anita (Raj Kaur) and Tee Jing Yi who are capable of upsetting the formbook,” said Julia.
“But first, I have to beat Vivian to secure the top spot in the group. I failed to top my group last year and paid a heavy price for it in the semi-final (she lost to Lydia in the group stage and was eliminated by Mew Choo),” said a cautious Julia.
The contest for the top two spots in Group B was thrown wide open after Stephanie Shalini stunned second seed Anita 9-21, 21-13, 21-17.
If Anita beats Jing Yi, who has won her two matches thus far, and Stephanie downs winless Tiffany Currier today, all three players will have two victories each and the qualifiers will be determined on count-back.
In the men's singles, senior players Lee Chong Wei (Group A), Mohd Roslin Hashim (Group C) and Yeoh Kay Bin (Group D) all stayed on course to secure the top place in their groups. They chalked up their second win convincingly yesterday.
However, both second seed Tan Chun Seang and Mohd Arif Latif have an equal chance of securing a first semi-final appearance in the national meet in a winner-takes-all Group B match tonight.
“I have not played against Chun Seang in a senior competition but I am confident of beating him to move into the semi-finals.
“But it will not be an easy task as he is in good form,” said Arif.

Well... in form uncles almost beat in form KKK/TBH in Macau last year. Never know about uncles.

Uncles will need to get rid of this 'style' during their last OG. Time for them shed bad habits, going to retire mah. Better retire in good 'style'.

Yup, M'sia uncle in US! Generally, M'sia players are lack of "killer instinct" and do not have "finishing touch". Thus far, only LCW and KKK/TBH have showed some improvements on those!

You certainly dont sound uncle like in your posts, :D. Thought I was dealing with a young man here. If you are uncle as in fastdrop or Loh's age, I'll call you uncle.
KKK/TBH have to prove themselves after the recent bad performances, KKK kena blasting, and of course the lost to 5th senior MD pair Gan/Lin on the 2nd day of this tourney.

Agreed! They have put too much pressures on themselves after being world #1. However, they are the only doubles who could finish and win titles like they did last year.

Dear eaglehelang,

I think that it is not match fixing. Maybe the veterans are very tired after participating in the major tournaments. I think that they will go all out in ABC in Johore Bahru which will be held soon.

Yup, Gan/Lin need a win, at least a runner-up in sthing.

Huh? Yap Kim Hock was your junior? Oh yeah, YKH only 37 or 38. So, you not that old, I call those over 50 uncle, he he he.

Some here think KKK/TBH are lost cause for OG, since Rexy blew his top & wanted to replace them with Zakry/Fairuz aka Fuzzy (dont ask me why, but this nick fits Fairuz more). Now they are on probation.

Why do we refer TCS as monkey? Is it the way he plays? His look? (picture pls) or He acts like one? We use to call YKH (Yap Kim Hock) as little monkey due his fast and furious style and perhaps his look too...
..here's one earlier thread where you'll find TCS' supposed nickname being mentioned; and yes, our yannie is the person to ask those queries..:p;):

From:

Ask Yannie that too, it's the other members who gave them the nick - it's a combination of their names-> Fairuz & Zakry .
I nickname Zakry = Courageous Shortie, Zakry is shortie but bold, more agrressive, the risk taker of the pair. Fariuz is Fuzzy as in "blur", looks lost, has "nervous at crucial points" syndrome
