It is about time now to up the ante. Boston Open has been so far the biggest prize tournament excluding US OPEN. In fact, last year total prize moneywas $ 17,000.00. That will put some pressure to BO Organizer to step it up too. I am liking it ....it definitely will be good for the sport !!!

awesome job by Ben and BBC staff to pull this one off!! my jaws were dangling on the floor when Ben first told me about it.

such prize money will certainly attract lots of high caliber players from all over the world to compete. this is great for the development of badminton.

whoever they are, we need to send them a thank you note so that they know their money has been well spent.

as for pics, well of course, as always love to provide my service. esp since BBC has awesome lighting and good lighting always make good photos.

That is great! If the local clubs willing to combine their resources, maybe it is possible to have a bigger tournament, which LD, LCW, TH might be willing to come and play. Hint, hint: US Open? ;)

BTW, I hope BBC would publicize all the sponsor names more then they ask for. Those of us in the bay area should buy and use their services as much as we possibly can. This is all marketing. If the sponsor can see the leads, referral, exposure, and new business as result of the sponsor, it is easy for them to justify doing it again or even bigger next time. Way to go! :)

..yes, hope our Don Chew will step up the ante, too, w/ the prize money of the U.S. Open (for next yr); the guys up north are antsy to get a piece of the U.S. Open action, too..:) ;)..We need to upgrade the U.S. Open to a Grand Prix event!..

Don't worry folks. The sponsors are no secret. As a matter of fact, we will be finalizing everything on our website very soon. I will also post here on BC some of the players that have confirmed in coming. We are trying to make contact with some international players but due to Beijing this year, it may be difficult to get some. We'll see. We will certainly try our best. I will keep all you BCers posted. Stay tuned.

Well, this is fairly good and easy $$$ for CH, as he's "on his own" now. I doubt many 1st tier national players (from the power hourses) will really come, as it's OG year. However, for high ranking individual players like CH it make perfect sense for a tour, or even possible future career?

kwun, you should've made it a bit harder by mentioning, "two persons, whose first name ends with y and d (or m)"..;)

Because the same top players were in all the events, the organizers gave everyone more time to rest, forcing a ~2-3 hour delay by day's end, so I left a bit before some of the matches completed.

Eva Lee sprained her right ankle during the first set against Mona Santoso. As a result, she/Lili Zhou didn't put up much of an effort in their WD semi against Santoso/Johanna Lee. Santoso and Johanna Lee pretty much made a gentlemen's agreement in handing their WS semifinal match to Lee, I assume to conserve energy for their next XD match against one another.

Speaking of XD, Tony Gunawan and Santoso effectively steamrolled their way to the final. In light of Eva Lee's injury, her semi with Howard Bach against Halim Ho/Grace Peng appeared to be postponed (?). It didn't look like she was withdrawing, and there was extended conversation at the organizers' table. I would guess Ho/Peng vs Gunawan/Santoso tomorrow in the finals, (...but wouldn't count out Bach/Lee ;))

MS: neat to see Gunawan show off his old man legs ;) He was too pooped after the three-setter against Arnold Setiadi and defaulted his match with Bach. Otherwise no surprises...

Both MD semis were entertaining, Gunawan/Ho were having too much fun to be trying too hard. Many, many long rallies of 10+ shots as they kept lifting for their young opponents (Rai/Hsu) to smash away to please the crowd.

Huge crowds today. Largest I've seen yet in northern California for a badminton contest (easily more in attendance than the GGBC tournaments, for instance) Good advertising, prime location near SF, and big prize money attracts audiences, it appears! I think these large crowds prevented Kwun from roaming about as much as usual, as usually I see him standing on stools for great angles on those action shots, but there were just too many people around today.

It really was a treat watching Gunawan/Ho up close and personal, and they were generous enough with their time to take a snapshot with me, so that further cements my fandom ;)

so i finally recovered from the exhausting weekend. time to give my thoughts.

needless to say, the best match in terms of spectatorship is definitely the MD final. it is rare to see such speed and dynamical play in such proximity. Bach/Malaythong showed that they have the power to overcome the legends of Tony/Halim in few occasions, but at the same time, it also shows that Tony/Halim can most often than not defend with such ease. if i were in the court, the shuttle would've hit the floor and stopped before i could even react.

personally, i most enjoyed watching the WD final. Peng/Tang was lacking in power and speed compared to Santoso/Lee, however, they totally made up the deficit with superior technique and deception. esp Tang who looks a bit laid back and lazy but in reality, her shots are the most lethal often placing at the most "painful" and most unexpected location. if you think she will drop, she will clear, if you think she is going to smash, she will be happy to clear 20 shots with you. while the other side was more happy to play power game. at the end though, Santoso/Lee won by a small margin.

XD was ok. obviously great to see Halim & Tony playing mixed. but i cannot help to say that all 4 players do not display specialized mixed skill that we often see in international matches. often leaving obvious holes.

WS was the usual epic battle between Zhou and Lee. Lee has the better track record but i did notice that during this tournament she is not at her best, often not able to retrieve Lili's amazingly fast, tight and deceptive cross court drops. however, at the end of the match, Lili was obviously lacking in endurance with which her shot accuracy dropped significantly.

and as for the organization, BBC did an awesome job not only to have gathered the never before seen prize money for a private tournament, and the excellent organization of the tournament itself. one can see that much thoughts has gone into the tournament including the promotion, we have probably one the best turnout in spectator; the arrangement, excellent use of audience stands to create a tournament arena (although i suggest more and higher stands in the future as there are still a lot of ppl standing); in house BBQ food really saved my day as i was running hungry; and of course the usual amenities provided by BBC, lounge, kids room, etc.

despite having the top US players entering, i was slightly disappointed by the entries this time. perhaps i had high expectations but i was hoping to see more national players coming in from other countries with such attractive prize money.

my other disappointment was the lacking of crowd atmosphere. audience are too polite to cheer and support players. perhaps next time handing out whistles / thunderstick, etc may help. and of course the larger the audience, the better the atmosphere will be.

kwun, love that second picture from behind Halim. Very professional shot :)

If you guys wonder how kwun got these nice pictures, he was standing on the second steps from the top of a 6 foot ladder where it says "WARNING" and "don't stand here" steps. :D He was literally risking his life to get these pictures :D:D

Obviously, the MD Final was the feature match with 4 great players with power, speed, and bodies flying to return shots. Such skills and determination, I was glad to able to see in person.

The match that I enjoyed the most was WD Final. It was the first time I saw Peng/Tang play and they both seemed to have a great time laughing and joking around all match (see Grace Peng's big smile in pic#5). Santoso/Lee might have won by a hair but way too intense and too serious for me. kwun has a good summary already. Had Tang not made a couple silly serving mistakes, the result might be different.

Anyway, even with $4 gas, it was worth the drive.

haha. i did have some nice people offering to stabilize the ladder for me. but i figured since i will be there for hours, probably not nice to have them do that.

having said that, i find that 6 foot is not tall enough, should've borrowed that 10 foot one and lean against a pole. ah well. next time :p

Anyway, glad you guys had a wonderful time.:) I'm sure the players also had fun entertaining you guys....On that note, shall we see an encore, next yr??..With perhaps a bit more prize money??.. ;)

*Btw, ah, now we see how Halim's hairdo looks like..hmm...a bit of Howard Bach's influence in there, too...And he seems to be building up more muscles:cool:

i was told they are going to make it larger and larger every year. they only had a couple of months to raise money and organize this time. next year BBC will have plenty more time for the preparation. i expect there will be a significant improvement in all categories.

Excellent pictures and nice recap, Kwun. What was the approximate score in the MD final? A bit surprised Gunawan/Ho took second!

..Howard and Bob did a belly thump at the end of the match...
Btw, kwun, just wondering...did you take a lot of pics??..Because it seems like you only took a few by the number of pics you posted in flickr. Or you only pre-selected specific pics out of the hundreds of pics??..
