Before the play can start, the DRAWS have to be completed, and because this is the "National" Championships, the draws are done in public with everyone welcome to come to see the process. (This is perfect for those, and BC members, who have been questioning the fairness of draws in tournaments so it's your opportunity to come see for yourself how difficult a process it actually is!) So, this coming Saturday, (March 29th) the draws will be done by USA Badminton at GGBC Menlo Park, starting at 9:00PM. We actually need for some people to be present to see the draws being made so we have witnesses to verify that everything was done fairly, so if you are going to be around this coming Saturday evening (March 29th) and are at all interested please stop by GGBC to see the draws taking place between 9:00PM - 11:30PM and be our witness!

Hello harimau,
We are not familiar with www.tournamentsoftware.com (http://www.tournamentsoftware.com) but we will post it there if we can learn to navigate the site cos we need to register. If not we might post it on BC with an attachment but we need to ask our Tournament director if we are able to do this. Thank you for your patience and understanding, and we will keep BC members updated about this matter.
GG Management!
so the draw has been made and Chris Lawrence the tournament director is going to proof read it, format it, and then post it.
meanwhile, i cannot disclose what the draw looks like, but i can tell you guys that i was a witness to the draw and it was made fairly according to the regulation. :D :D

Hey Pete! Don't mock those of us who have been in the Seniors for some time now! :crying:
BTW, I played with Peter Mo the other day. Julie came to HKG with Peter and he tore his muscle just like ME! He was playing and SNAP!. Then he couldn't move at all. SO be nice when you see him Pete! Will you come to watch the Adult Nationals in GGBC?
Hey Kwun, Thanks for being a witness. Now you can answer all the questions regarding fairness to the draws on BC. I say whoever complains should learn to do draws and Draw themselves. Chris explained the process was difficult and I don't know how they did the draws for the Taiwan cup which was 1500 entries and then the Korean amateur tournaments was total 3800 entries! The games were on time and there were 20 pages of draws in Taiwan. I couldn't even FIND my name.
Hope everyone can make it to GGBC on April 4th to 6th. We will give commentary here. Right Kwun!? Official Photog?

with how a couple of the draws turned out, i think there will definitely be questions! but really, there isn't much to say, other than the fact that the draws are based on the regulation rules, and as well as simply luck, or bad luck for some people. the draw has been made fairly (accordingly to the rule) and randomly. which is exactly what a draw should be.
Hope everyone can make it to GGBC on April 4th to 6th. We will give commentary here. Right Kwun!? Official Photog?

All I have to say is that it would be a lot easier if you use the aforementioned tournament software. You could easily find your name by clicking at the players tab listed by last name, then find out your scheduled matches, etc.
The software would also eliminate all the manual tasks associated with the drawing, seeding, scheduling, etc. I am sure some of you know what I'm talking about. If it is a question of costs, I believe USA Badminton would even loan you a laptop with the software since this is a USA Badminton sanctioned tournament. It doesn't take long to learn the software either, it is very intuitive. I am not representing the software company; however, this is what the badminton professionals and enthusiasts are expecting these days with the advancement of internet.
Actually, I find it intriuging that a tournament this caliber in the US is not run using this de-facto standard software. The draw would have been published and known to the general public right after the draw as well. As I was searching for the draw is it still not available anywhere outside GGBC!
OK, I am done venting...

Let me answer you if I can. I believe Holvy is not playing because the rules of US Nationals is that you must have been in US at least for 1 year. I don't know if Holvy has been. But don't take my word for it. Our tournament program will be posted tommorow on BC and the draws on the 3rd. Please stay tuned! Howard and Bob are playing and actually many of the top players in the US! Tony told us he couldn't make it cos Yonex and other sponsors needed him in India. But he REALLY WANTED to come and gave us his best wishes as well as his support in our GGBC April Newsletter which is in full on another thread in BC if you want to take a look! Tony will be in a few issues cos he did a great interview for us by email! I was very very happy to see Tony in HKG last time and while he was coaching Eva and May, he was wearing our GGBC SWEATSHIRT! I almost fell out of my chair!:D:eek:
As for the draws. This Tournament is sanctioned by USAB badminton and we are only following their rules. Born Ready, your suggestion is good and you should write a letter to USAB and make your suggestion to him. Our tournament Director, Chris Lawrence is THE most experienced Tournament director in all of US. Mike Yang hand picked him because Mike said that Chris directed the most well run, super promptly scheduled tournaments in all of US, and I can vouch for that cos the last time I played I WISHED he would delay my game, but the game was just so on TIME!! Much to my dismay! :D
I just hope you all come out and watch this event being held in Bay Area for the first time in 21 years. It's an honour for us here in the Bay Area and really.. if you can please support it by coming to watch!
OK, Hey Cheung is that you? We had a great game tonight! Hope to see you next Tuesday! I will push my support for you to join our CCC club in HKG!

Hello Born,
I did pose your question about to our tournament Director, Chris Lawrence. He is aware of it, but he is not a fan of it, therefore he would not be adapting it. Maybe it's great for locating your game, but not so good for placing games.
I cannot make fair judgment not understanding software, but in this cyber millineum, oftentimes we get so frustrated with techno gadgets, it's so much more intimate to go the human way. I know that Chris is the most experienced from his many many years of tournament Direction and he is also an OXFORD graduate!
Again referring to my own minor experience, the morning cup having 1500 entries, is all done BY HUMAN HAND. My first 2 opponents were rather easy and the 3rd was tough as nails. I saw one 60 year old Ladies singles category where 2 HKG friends were playing against each other and one lady didn't even bother taking her thick sweater off cos the opponent was sooo weak, that I don't know why she would even enter the tourny. But that lady played her BEST game and did what she could, but her game was so very weak. Her opponent just kept handing her shots until she made mistakes which was in the 2nd shot or so each time. So the game was over in less than 10 minutes and they were both not sweating.
Anyways, are you playing in the tournament Born? We will be posting the Draws today. I guess we will post as attachment here cos I don't think we can get the draws pasted right on the page here. Thanks for your patience and understanding!

Sorry it's no secret, but you cannot IMAGINE, HOW MUCH WORK is involved in preparing this tournament, and we are on our last few days counting down. If we could only have shot a "making of" video, you would know. We have 2 clubs to run, a full time dedicated staff who hasn't had any sleep for weeks, ONE BOSS, Mike, who is directing everyone, and many other projects besides this one, and ME in Hong Kong right now, waiting for BOSS's instructions, to direct my team, into the middle of the night cos of the time difference, and there are just so many details of last minute preparations, which is a list well over 100 items to cover. Then we got new instructions from our tournament Director everyday, so placing the Draws online for all to see is only 1 item on our TO DO LIST :p. Our apologies. Hope you can be patient and understanding. The person who is going to upload the draws is in TORONTO, Canada, and she is doing it this very minute. Please enjoy them and hope you will show up to watch the tournament after all this ruckus! :D Thanks for all your patience!

Sally, Thanks for working so hard for the tournament. Hats off to you and your staff. I know how difficult and time consuming it is to run tournaments. I don't mean to be complacent.
However, with all due respect, I disagree with Chris's assessment; considering this is THE same software that the Super Series folks are using throughout the world, not just in one country, I submit to you that this is the best software there is to run tournaments. Just my 2 cents...

Oh no problem Born at all :o. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I think alot of times it' interesting to debate it out. Some people are used to a certain way of doing things. As long as the cake turns out good, it doesn't matter if you use cake mix or make from scratch! :D. So as long as it's fair and just, there is no problem to use either way. Whichever is comfortable. I think with the Super Series draw will always seem fair cos everyone is at that level. No matter how the draw turns out, computer or hand made, it's a tough draw cos there is no leisure games at that level. You should see what happens when they call "line out" in those games . I've seen birdies be SOO IN, and be called OUT, that the UNFairness of THAT is really frustrating. One Country has particularly alot of that. When I see that I really feel sorry for the poor bloke who got the call OUT.
But thank you for your letter and I always think it's good to have different opinions cos you always see two sides of the coin and others can have an interesting look at both sides! Thank you and hope you can make it to our tournament!

OOOOo that just makes me wish I was there too!!! I have to be in HKG cos my Parents are here and this is the only time they gave me to be here so I had to be here too cos they are not well!!! :crying:
But.. I'm so glad that you set high standards for us. Our club is young. Mike started his career on his own with GGBC, with fantastic results, and my experience in only ONE FIELD since my teens, and following behind Mikes clever intuition and skills, makes us rather inexperienced and and learning as we go. But I'm sure Mike is honored and proud that you would expect the same from us as you would a professional series tournament. Mike is leading his team to do the very, possible best we can, and we can only hope it's a smidgeon as good as any professional event. We don't want to disappoint anyone and we can only hope people can understand that it's not easy but we are trying!
I hope Kwun will stay up all hours to post :D some inkling of commentary.. cos he will get the best view taking so many photos. ha haa.. Poor Kwun, you'll be working overtime! We will have plenty of people taking videos and maybe Kwun can this time, take photos of not only the players, but the spectators experience and eyesight as well. Sometimes I find it so fun to also see what's going on around the premises. Just a suggestion!

Hello Born,
I did pose your question about to our tournament Director, Chris Lawrence.
Sally :D
hello sally, kwun and chris
this is the second times, i read the WS draw like that. Lauren Todt was put into a simple and non-balance draws!!! the reason is Chris is not familiar with the Tournament Software !
Firstly, I wonder USAB got that licence but their official not to use it, or is it a practise in the Referee Group of people ? last year US open, Adult National also using the software to make the draws and posting the results.
Secondly, I wonder how you guys process the draw according to the general tournament regulation of USAB, such as the seeds(who determine how many seeds or shadow seeds used in a draw), the ranking committee(any one), bye and geographical distribution(state, clubs etc how to distribut in a draw)... human touch, or magic touch.
Thirdly, referee is to overlook the process and see if the draw is unbalance, his duty is to advice to have a re-draw.
Please read regulations from WBF also. If the referee not accommodating this, that means he did his job badly!!
