Lim Han Ming rates the Olympic chances of the other sports

BADMINTON
THE Republic's shuttlers should know their fate by the end of this month when the qualification closes.
World No. 17 Ronald Susilo and No. 21 Kendrick Lee should qualify for the men's singles event, where there are 38 places on offer.
Xing Aiying, ranked 33rd in the world, should also earn one of the 38 berths in the women's singles.
There are 16 slots allocated each for the men's, women's and mixed doubles categories.
The women's pair of Li Yujia and Jiang Yanmei, ranked 12th in the world, and the mixed doubles pair of Li and Hendri Saputra, ranked 14th, are on course to qualify for the Olympics.
Susilo created a stir four years ago in Athens when he knocked out world No. 1 Lin Dan on his way to the last eight, before losing to Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana.
Plagued by injuries over the last few years, the 28-year-old is struggling to rediscover his best form.
Lee went all the way to the badminton final of last year's SEA Games before losing to Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat.
To have any chance of winning a medal, he will have to play the best badminton of his life.
Unless she can emulate the giant-killing act of former team-mate Li Li at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, Xing, too, is unlikely to feature prominently in Beijing.
That leaves us with the two doubles pairs. Depending on the luck of the draw, the women's doubles and mixed doubles pairs will do well to reach the quarter-finals
pjswift 04-07-2008, 05:25 AM We should have a breakthrough chance in WS table tennis in Beijing;our courageous paddlers have beaten CHN recently so they know it's now possible.
Our shuttlers will be winners just being giant killers again.

SINGAPORE (AFP) — An ugly spat has erupted between two of Singapore's top Olympic hopes, with badminton ace Ronald Susilo reportedly mulling legal action against former lover and table tennis queen Li Jiawei.
Susilo, once ranked world number six but now languishing at 17, is seeking a share of a car and a condominium the pair bought together when they were an item, the Straits Times said.
The claims sparked a furious response from world number eight Li on Monday that he was trying to ruin her Olympic dream.
The newspaper said Susilo, who shot to fame when he upset world number one Lin Dan at the Athens Olympics in 2004, had consulted lawyers and was seeking the payoff after his five-and-half year affair with Li ended in January
Li, who is tipped to lead the Singapore national team to an Olympic gold in August, said she was stunned.
"Does he want to affect my chances of winning a medal or my moods?" she asked through the newspaper.
"What's his motive and why now? I am a girl after all and he knows these things will upset me."
The Indonesian-born Susilo said he sought legal advice after unsuccessful attempts to contact Li, although she insisted he had never called.
"What can I do now? I have loans to pay and it is urgent," he told the Today newspaper, while pledging that the furore would not affect his Olympic preparations.
"Rest assured, I will focus on getting ready for the Olympics."
The pair got together at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and soon became Singapore's golden couple.

What on earth has that got to do with it... >_>. Oh you're a girl!! Oh you pooooor poor little girl, lets all feel sorry for you because you're a girl.
I suggest we should leave this couple alone to sort out their problems and not drag ourselves into the controversy. ;)
george@chongwei 04-08-2008, 08:04 AM hmm, i hope that once again ronald susilo will be able to beat lin dan:)

Who beat LD is the hero. :D:D
If RS meets LD in R1, it is fated that LD will lose again.
Then LCW, TH, Sony, PSH, LYI and PG will all rush to RS, hug him high and then blanja him with the most expensive kopi luwak!
Meanwhile, BCL and CJ will be shaking in their pants, sorry shorts, (and getting wet) as their 'match-fixing' strategy has gone kaput. LYB can be seen wringing his hair (might as well go botak as there isn't much left to pull out) and throwing tantrums on the spot, jumping up and down as though executing a furious jump smash.
All hell breaks loose in the Chinese camp.
On home ground and ranked as the world's top badminton nation, the MS crown has eluded them yet again! But will TH celebrate another win?

Girls... arent women fighting for equal rights?
So after breakup, the girl get everything?
This is singapore way or China?
Dato Asbullah 07-08-2008, 04:17 AM No matter who represents Singapore for the upcoming OG in Beijing, their chances to end at the podium is almost 0, for badminton sports.
Ronald Susilo are more expert in tackling beautiful girls rather than play a good badminton game.
Look at him past result - 10 years with SBA, he is only manage to win -
2006 Luxembourg Open
2003 Singapore Open
2003 Thailand Open
Other than that, early exit especially in the recent years tournament.

XinAiYing beat ZhouMi recently... so, she got chance lor... :)
That would be our "Uncle Loh":D
I'm sure you can do better than Uncle Loh. Uncle Loh has retired and pass the torch to you already lah.

Training in Korea can produce good result? Then we should send our Yoyo go there....
Why Susie-lo dont want to train with his team-mate?
I dont see LCW train in CHN, so do LD do it in MAS.
Weird...:D:D
hcyong 07-08-2008, 10:48 AM Singapore medal in badminton? Hmmm, very unlikely at best.
Susilo, Kendrick? Just think LD, BCL, CJ, LCW, PG, PSH, LHI, TH, SDK. It would require some luck to finish top three with these around.
Xing? I would say she has the highest chance among Singapore badminton players. I think ZL and TR are safely in the top 3. One more spot to fight for with ZN, XXF, WMC, PHY, XHW, etc etc. There is a chance but very slim.
Singapore's best chance will be in table tennis women's doubles, me thinks.

I think they lack quality sparring partners in this tiny island (even after recruiting FT(Foreign Talents), dats why he trains with kimchi now. Nothing wrong with that...
aiya... dato... dun blame them lor... blame me lah... coz me oso FT but my baddie skills not good enuf to be his sparring partner...:p
I think Singapore should recruit better sparring partners. Or better invite players from other countries to play and spar in Singapore.

brudderrr.... u dun know how the system works in this tiny island... all they want is RESULTS to showoff to their neighbors... haha....
oopppsss... Dato Abdulah will take over from here... haha...:D
samuel882 07-08-2008, 10:37 PM Well, Susilo might not have the ability to win Gold in Beijing. But he could help LCW to clear his hurdles by beating LD in early rounds :D

LCW never needed any help to clear hurdles for him to win and there's no need for it in OG08 either.Look at how he won JO07 to understand.LCW is used to winning on his own.

It work both ways bro. Msia also want results to show off to our neighbours as well. Not nessesary on badminton but in other aspects too. Aiyah.. all these issues sensitive. I might get ban from goin to Spore.

...hmmm...sparring in korea mean a higher quality mah...who in sg can match rs except kendrick lee???...
I concur with hcyong's view that Singapore has no chance at all in badminton at the Beijing Olympics, not even our up-and-coming Xing Aiying. But it will be an excellent exposure for young Aiying.
Nevertheless, I hope our selected shuttlers will give of their best.
In table-tennis our chances are much better and we hope our women's team can bring back a medal. :D
Our young sailors may also surprise us but their chances are not as good as our women's table-tennis team.
This is only my own opinion.
Cheers to our Singapore Olympians!

AlanY 07-09-2008, 04:20 AM agree...beaten th and ld in a row
pass record doesn't mean much, you such have to perform at your best from day 1 and with a little bit of luck wouldn't hurt.
didn't it recently at AE 2008, LCW beat TH to got into the semi and been trashed by CJ in 2 games? Be fair, LCW never played well in england, same goes to TH, dont know why?
abedeng 07-09-2008, 04:21 AM As Loh has wisely counselled, it is good exposure to their best future hope, Xing Aiying. Assuming she doesn't bail like Li Li, Xing is good for at least 3 future Olympics including Beijing.
All she needs now actually is to manage tall power players. Could be the 3rd player from SEA who can mount a real challenge to top guns after WMC and Maria Kristin.
AlanY 07-09-2008, 04:22 AM In table-tennis our chances are much better and we hope our women's team can bring back a medal. :D;):p:):D

Psst, Jimbo, I'm sure they've been fishing our Msia players too. Some country even wanted Gan/Lin, our 5th MD pair. For all you know, later, you'll see familliar name in wearing Spore shirt :D:p. Then, our uncle Loh, Pjswift will have more players to cheer for, maybe our Noriayu also will cheer for Spore players then.
Would it be the 1st medal for MAL?
Nope, 1st Gold yes. Spore also has never won gold bf.
Msia had won Silver bf thru CHeah SK (current KLRC coach)/Yap KH (BAM's chief coach), bronze thru the Sidek bros - Razif, Jailani, Rashid (back-up squad chief coach).

thats a big joke... haha... I doubt this tiny island will buy young players from Msia coz they prefer to recruit players from "villages". why? coz of "currency exchange". I wont elaborate much but just tell u that those talented young players from "villages" are paid peanuts. Even if this tiny island paid them "peanuts" in terms of their own currency, it's an astronomical numbers back in their "villages". How I know? Coz i know few coaches based in this island... they told me so... ;)

jimbo 07-10-2008, 09:23 PM Jiawei asks, and gets, flag-bearer honour
NATIONAL paddler Li Jiawei got what she wished and asked for - to be the flag-bearer for Singapore at the Beijing Olympics. That honour was bestowed on her at the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games flag presentation ceremony yesterday.
SNOC secretary-general Chris Chan believes that it was the first time that an athlete had made a request to be the flag-bearer.
Li, who flew in from her centralised training stint in Osaka to attend the ceremony, revealed that she wanted to go back to her native Beijing to make a statement.
'Over the years, there has been so much debate over the foreign talent scheme. This is my way of showing everyone that everything I've ever achieved is because of Singapore.'

Li Jiawei is a shameless, unprincipled and scheming person. In the Today Paper of 11 July, a forum writer saw a talk show `A date with the masters - an alternative ping pong route' on CCTV4 in Guangzhou on 26 June in which Li Jiawei and Feng Tianwei were interviewed. Li Jiawei said: `as a Beijinger, and a Chinese national (Zhongguo ren), Beijing is my home ground and I hope to do well'.
Bloody traitor and double-headed snake Li Jiawei!!! She has the gall to say that she is still a Chinese national when she abandoned her PRC citizenship for Singapore citizenship. She has the cheek to identify herself as a Chinese national! Where is her loyalty? Is her loyalty to China or to Singapore? Didn't she take the Oath of Allegience when she became a Singapore citizen?
If Li were really so patriotic towards China, why did she give up her PRC citizenship for Singapore citizenship? It is because of the promise of a million-dollar award for winning an Olympic Gold Medal. She took up Singapore citizenship for purely materialistic and mercenery reasons and I believe it is also the case for the rest of PRC-imported atheletes.
If Singapore did not dangle the sweet carrot and promise of million dollars for an Olympic Gold, do you think Li and her compatriots will come to Singapore and renounce their PRC citizenship? No! They renounce their PRC citizenship because China cannot reward them with the monetary incentives that Singapore can.
To Li Jiawei and her compatriots - I say that you are simply a bunch of merceneries - you have no loyalty at all to Singapore, your adopted country and you are ungrateful for what Singapore has done for you. Even if you do win an Olympic medal, I am not the least bit impressed or elated - because all you are thinking of is your prize money - not honour and glory for Singapore.

I am true-blue Singaporean - born and bred here, completed NS liability. I do not wish Singapore to get a medal because even if someone gets a medal, he/she will be a foreign-born athelete. I do not feel any more patriotic as a Singaporean if Li Jiawei or Ronald Susilo wins an Olympic medal. Who cares? They are foreign-born, not Singapore-born.
There is just too much hype over the quality of our FT atheletes. They are nothing at all. They are rejects - 3rd rated in their own countries. They know that they are no where in their own countries. Foreign atheletes embrace Singapore citizenship just to enrich themselves. Don't be so naive to think that they are patriotic towards Singapore and want to bring fame and glory to Singapore. What Li Jiawei said in her CCTV interview in Guangdong already speaks for itself. When in Singapore, she says winning a medal for Singapore is an honour. But back in China, she says that as a Beijinger, a Chinese national, she wants to do her best in home ground.

Dato Asbullah 07-14-2008, 10:32 AM We are waiting Uncle Loh to comment on this matter.
Jagdpanther 07-14-2008, 10:09 PM 4 days already. Is he preparing a 1-page long sermon in this thread?

So sorry you guys are waiting for me and I've disappointed you. :D
I don't think I want to dwell on a largely personal matter purposely brought on by someone who obviously has a dislike for someone else for whatever reason. Worse still somebody else's (a non-member) views were introduced here to try to stir up more trouble.
Worst of all, the posts have no bearing to the main topic which is "Singapore's badminton chances in the Beijing Olympics 2008". It is off-topic and should have been deleted from this thread.
I guess I have to say something to ease my mind.
I am very impressed with the manner in which johnps has spoken. I am sorry he has been dragged into this "discussion" which I tried not to continue because it will lead to nowhere but to more unnecessary misunderstandings and conflicts. I have tried previously to explain Singapore's FT situation but it seems not to have registered as certain quarters are bent on criticizing whatever the merits. But I thank johnps sincerely for helping me out.
I don't think I have met johnps personally but at the same time, I thought I knew him because of his writings and the views he holds.
Yes I know jimbo casually and had interacted with him as I did with many other BCers who went to Jakarta for the Thomas/Uber Cup competitions. It was our hardworking Malaysian friend abedeng who arranged for our rooms at Century Park Hotel and he also did some other 'mundane' tasks and for all his help I greatly appreciate. It made our stay in Jakarta that much more pleasant.
Brother Din (abedeng) had allocated us in different rooms. Hcyong was my roommate from start to finish. Jimbo was originally staying with probably Sammuel, but Sam had to return to Penang earlier and Jimbo was then being placed with someone else but he requested to bunk with Yong and me instead. He even had the gall to ask me to join someone else as there was no extra bed to accommodate him. I could not find a good reason to leave my room and to incur the resultant inconvenience. So he became our 'roommate' out of necessity.
All I can say is that I do not wish to waste any more time on the FT issue and I detest those who try to "bash Singapore" at every opportunity even though their remarks are disguised. And I am most appreciative of what johnps has done thus far. :)

Oldhand 07-15-2008, 11:24 PM 14 posts have been deleted.
They fit neither the purpose of this forum nor the subject of this thread.
Crude language does not strengthen an argument.
Worse, it clouds the reasoning, if there is one :(
Let's apply an ice-pack to our sensibilities and continue :p

Fret not. I've been living here for 7yrs, and dealing with all sort of people. Some people have low EQ or chose to be ignorant. No choice, we hv to lick their toes if needed for monetary rewards.
So, stop any ill comments. We must start beautifying and worshiping... err...

any singapore tv channel to broadcast the OG?
I think Channel 5 will cover quite a bit of the Games. Table tennis and BADMINTON will most certainly be featured. :)

Yes, two of your posts were deleted.
They were deleted because they were referenced posts.
When you quote an inflammatory post, your reply ends up citing that post.
As such, your post too will have to be deleted.
On the other hand, had you posted an independent reply, it might have escaped deletion.
It will help to remember this point :)

Aiyah ...Li Li long goner ...she lost to Larissa Griga (UKR) and Jeanine Cognini (SUI) before. She is hopeless. I believe it is because Aiying is nervous.
