View Full Version : Badminton axed from 2012 Olympics
bchan1986 04-07-2008, 07:48 AM I strongly disagree with this, just wanna know other peoples thoughts,
the reason the olympic committe dropped it is because they say badminton is only known in very few countrys,
also the drop will be replaced with chess possibly? WTF!!!!!!!!
rubbish, thats my thougts. the head of the olympic sports committe should be fired lol, not litrally
feel free to comment
Dreamzz 04-07-2008, 07:49 AM you do realise it was an april fool's joke, right?
Azwok 04-07-2008, 08:14 AM haha, thats brilliant, that april fools got me pretty bad at first too. I guess if you just read the article and not the thread you dont stand such a good chance as spotting it as a spoof cos you cant read others peoples alarming posts.
george@chongwei 04-07-2008, 08:27 AM so this thread will be no longer available..
removed!:)
haha
llpjlau 04-07-2008, 08:51 AM oh my goodness, you didnt bother to do a search before coming to a conclusion?
Oldhand 04-07-2008, 09:28 AM Well, we are still in April, aren't we? ;)
Loopy 04-07-2008, 09:44 AM No it's true.
Badminton will be dropped after 2008 OG, because it's so boring.
After all, people used to play it with a cocktail glass in their other hand :)
Tsumaranai 04-07-2008, 11:00 AM Haha, that's preposterous. Badminton was no less developed in England and they host one of the largest tournaments. But indeed, many people were not so fond of the idea that the Games should be held in London. So, contrary to the idiotic comments of YouTubers that "China sucks" and whatnot, I would have to believe that the person who tried to snatch at the Olympic torch might have been dissatisfied with the notion of the Olympics coming to London, and wanted to eliminate that "Olympic feeling" by attacking the torch.

Always read between the lines. :) The original draft was superbly written by an "oldhand".:p Lovely piece of fiction.
martin8768 04-07-2008, 11:12 AM haha its still fooling people :P poor bchan1986 he must feel silly xD
Vomit 04-07-2008, 12:19 PM Before opening this thread i was "damn i hope thats a late april fools!".
Aslong as they keep badminton and don't put ultimate-frisbee in the olympics im happy.
harmono 04-07-2008, 02:08 PM Hey what's wrong with UF? It's more of a sport then golf, archery or darts.
Vomit 04-07-2008, 02:56 PM Nothings wrong with it(as far as i know), though i do think it would be more intersting if you combined it with Archery....
chris-ccc 04-07-2008, 05:08 PM you do realise it was an april fool's joke, right?
Well, we are still in April, aren't we? ;)
.
Greetings,
I do not wish to spoil Oldhand's April Fool's Day joke (which was effective :):):)) but it wasn't a joke back in July 2005 when the International Olympic Committee met to decide which sports were to be dropped or to be included. Baseball and Softball were dropped from the schedule of the 2012 Olympic Games in London as they failed to receive a majority required to stay on the program. It was revealed that badminton was just in the brink of elimination in that vote.
Badminton did not do well at the Athens Olympics 2004. We were just lucky that Badminton is a popular sport in the UK. :)
I did mention about this scare in a thread about 2 years ago that Badminton, as an Olympic sport, is not really free from danger from being dropped. :(
We really need to promote and support Badminton. Please give me some time to find that article again for you.
Cheers... chris@ccc

OldHand might get into trouble.. hehehe
Hall0 04-07-2008, 05:49 PM Well... At first it's hard to believe the news, especially when the news was showing up at NBC Sports website, covering the olympics, http://universalsports.nbcsports.com/articles/show/55570?sport_id=2
:)

They are using bots to harvest related news.
And, of course, bots can be easily fooled ;)

Oldhand 04-07-2008, 11:03 PM It would be very very difficult for the International Olympic Committee to throw badminton out.
Currently, only a few sports fully meet the many and varied qualification criteria for classification as an 'Olympic Sport'. The requirements are tough, especially those relating to geographical spread and governing structures.
Football, volleyball, swimming, cycling and (lately) badminton and tennis are examples of geographically widespread sports - this implies acceptance on the world's many continents (and not necessarily a universal popularity). None of these sports can be voted out, much less arbitrarily discarded, by the IOC.
Equestrian events, fencing and (lately) hockey are examples of geographically restricted sports - few nations have practitioners, much less competitors or competition schedules. Any of these sports can be voted out by the IOC - however, we must accept that a few members are 'strong' enough to torpedo any such move.
Cricket, for instance, has neither a measurable following nor a graded competitive structure in continental South America or North America. As such, its popularity in India (Asia), England (Europe), South Africa (Africa) and Australia (Oceania) do not allow its classification as an Olympic Sport. However, using the West Indies (and, recently, Canada), North America can be cited as the fifth continent - this has allowed cricket to make a case for itself, albeit weak, before the IOC.
(To illustrate further, if Canada or South Africa were to pull out of international hockey, I'd imagine a very swift exit for the sport from the Olympic arena.)
Like it or not, our beloved badminton as an Olympic sport is here to stay.
Now, if the scientists on Antarctica would play it, we couldn't be unseated at all :D

jamesd20... thank you for giving us that thread. :):):)
That article that I was referring to, was from Xinhua@www.chinaview.cn, found located at:
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2006-03/13/content_4298351_1.htm
There, it said that "In the congress meeting of the International Olympic Committee last July (2005), baseball and softball was dropped from the schedule of the 2012 Olympic Games in London as they failed to receive a majority required to stay on the program in a secret vote by the IOC'. and "It has been revealed that badminton is just in the brink of eliminating in that vote."
It would be very very difficult for the International Olympic Committee to throw badminton out.
.
Oldhand...... You will never know.:rolleyes::rolleyes:
Now that the Olympics has become as a big entertainment business and as a big television program, like the Formula 1 Grand Prix Racing; if our Badminton is not regarded as a popular sport to watch by the non-Badminton-playing community, then I wouldn't be surprised that it would be axed from the Olympics.

Californian 04-12-2008, 04:10 AM This was the best part:
"Unlike judo, croquet has a distinguished and civilised history," said Laer Diputs, president of the ICF. "It's also not like badminton where you simply run around wildly, hitting back and forth. Croquet is very competitive and depends on a combination of physical skill and careful strategy. Most of all, success depends on a cool assessment of risks and probabilities, yes, much like chess."
DexDez 04-20-2008, 01:06 AM Wonder if the IOC put the number of Chinese badminton fans into consideration?
fsnicolas 04-22-2008, 04:02 AM I just read in the news section of BadmintonCentral that badminton is going to be removed from the Olympics in 2012. According to Laer Diputs, president of the ICF."Unlike judo, croquet has a distinguished and civilised history. It's also not like badminton where you simply run around wildly, hitting back and forth." I'd like to play with this guy and see him "run around wildly"...

storkbill 04-22-2008, 06:38 AM Actually Badminton is being replaced by Counterstrike. ICF doesn't stand for International Croquet Federation, it stands for International Counterstrike Federation.
Oldhand 04-22-2008, 09:49 AM It's heartening to note that we're not out of April yet :D

Really, wow, I knew australia did, the fighting roo's or something RIDICULOUS but wow. I still don't think if South Africa dropped hockey it would be axed though, too much of north america, europe, and northern asia have a large following of the game
Paul_A 04-23-2008, 04:03 PM the Asian Championships, mens singles in the semi finals, Sony Diwi Kuncoro vs Park Sung Hwan, posted by Modious and the commentator said that badminton might be axed from the olympics in 2012 and he said I think judo was on the chopping block as well. That commentator is one of those people who were on leave when brains were handed out to human beings
The scariest part is where he promises to be in Jakarta for the Thomas & Uber Cups. Now, that's a very serious threat to the game :(
modious 04-23-2008, 07:55 PM Yeah I can't believe Brian Richmond mentioned about badminton and judo being axed from the Olympics on TV.......
Worse still, he can't seem to get the names of the players and coaches right!!!

Dreamzz 04-24-2008, 04:43 AM i'd be dissapointed if he does the commentary for the TC or the OG, i'm voting for gillian and morten!
extremenanopowe 04-24-2008, 06:02 AM agreed.... too much emphasis on OG and kill all the other tournaments. The excitement is no longer there. Absentee, kelong... etc...

Gillian is.. unbelievable. I like her commentary. a bit excessive and far-fetched at times but aren't all commentators?
Dream Hai 04-24-2008, 11:08 AM What I really want to know is WHY this April Fools Joke has been allowed to go on and on and on...it last longer than a Duracell rabbit...Do us all a favor and lock it please...

Hey, I was joking when I said it was Oldhand's fault. It was a joke and you can't blame him and BC for that. That news was splash all over the news on April 1st (hey, April 1st, come on :) )
If there is anyone to blame, it is journalism nowadays, reporters run with stories without checking and double-checking the fact first.
Gillian is.. unbelievable. I like her commentary. a bit excessive and far-fetched at times but aren't all commentators?
BTW, for those of us watching on download, we can't tell who-is-who and the name of the commentator. Maybe you can educate us a little (not in this but on another thread).
