I've been playing for too long without proper training and i've gotten used to playing more with my arm than with my wrist. I am trying to change from playing with my arm to playing with my wrist. Has anyone here had any similar problems. Any advice? Thanx for all replies.

I use to go home having sore arm after each game. One of my buddies enlightened me "perhaps you should use more wrist than arm".

From then onwards, I have been paying more attention to proper techniques, and started the transition, which takes about 3 months to complete.

I started by strengthening my wrist with small weights and using squash and tennis rackets.

Then I practise proper holding of racket to use the wrist more effectively, and continue with wrist snapping smashes (not much arm movement to get the timing right).

After that I put it together with proper preparation.

I did have some lousy games while going through this transformation, but it resulted into better games for me.

Do you mean when you're smashing you only use wrist? so during the smash your hand is hanging up? Do you use body movement after doing wrist smash?
I've been using wrist for smashing all the time and my friend said that I should use arm to add more power, and I have quite trouble with that.

A real smash needs coordinated movement of body, arm, and wrist. A "wrist smash", however, is carried out with just the forearm and the wrist, and is a good weapon to have in your arsenal. It's a good surprise shot, and for situations where you don't have the time to execute a "real" smash. You need some basic wrist strength to get it right, however. Practise with squash or tennis rackets, as Justin said. Or use your badminton racquet with the cover on -- that really forces you to develop good technique and strength!

I use mainly my arm and a little wrist is my smashes. Yeah, i do use body movement as well after my smash coz my wrist alone isn't strong enough. Sometimes when i do all these things right, i even suprise myself with the amount of power i can get in a smash.

I agree with you Magnus, except a former school coach whose a friend of my uncles suggested to use light weights and a skipping rope to exercise the wrist. Strangly i can do a hard backhand smash with my wrist but not with my forehand. Wierd......

Do you use squash or teenis rackets for shadow badminton only right?? i tried to hit shuttle with it.... (it's funny...) yeah magnus is right body movement produce powerful smash&clear. wrist just add little power 2 it. but it controls the dirction of ur smash. oh one more thing, wrist smash = a good drop
