I read the news (The Star) and Msia team will field the FULL strength.

I found Korea's line-up rather interesting. I remember years ago (some of you young ones may still be playing with your rattle at this point :P ), if not mistaken, during the 1992 or 1994 Thomas/Uber Cup, Indonesia did the same thing when playing Malaysia in the group match to determine the winner of the group. (In those days, 2 groups with 2 winners from each group qualifing for semis with cross-over, i.e no.2 of one group playing the no.1 of othe other group).

Anyway, Indonesia fielded their doubles players as singles and vice versa to lose to Malaysia to avoid playing China. They came under severe criticism and I think at one point, the BWF (then IBF) was seriously considering legal action or defaulting Indonesia (which of course would be funny if they did!). Another example of sportmanship bowing down to the demands of commercial reality (if Indonesia was defaulted in the semis, all the sponsors would be very unhappy).

Anyway, in the end, Indonesia got away with it and lost to Malaysia, then they went on to beat South Korea I think in the other semis and met Malaysia in the final and lost anyway! Karma? I guess they still made it to the finals instead of being eliminated in the semis.

I was just thinking after that I would have thought something would have been done to prevent this from being repeated in future TU Cups but I guess not!

My only 2 cents into this is...to win the Thomas / Uber Cup, you need to be the no.1 team in the world and so doesn't matter who you play, you just got to kick a s s !!

At what point does the line becomes blurry between "doing what you have to do to win" and living up to the spirit of the game?

For example, say now Malaysia also wants to avoid China in the Thomas Cup and field their weakest team also against S Korea. Since players are instructed not to win, so it'll be funny watching both players trying to see who can lose first. Initially, after say 4rallies, a player will 'accidentally' hit the shutle out. The other player will retaliate by hitting the shuttle out after 3 rallies and so forth. Eventually, they're both going to serve into the net to give away points? When it comes to that is the saddest day in the T U Cup history.

On the lighter side of things, would be nice if China decides to play God and decide not to top their group just to teach those 'game throwers' a lesson! Wouldn't that be funny??!

I like the Korean strategy much more than "telling the players to lose on purpose". The Korean strategy will give us highly entertaining matches. For example, last time we saw Mr. Park wearing eye glasses. I'd love to see LHI playing MD. :)

Just thought of another way of explaining. Suppose China wants to lose (for whatever reason). Which one do you prefer: seeing LD putting on a show and BCL getting "injury" half way, or seeing LD & BCL pairing up and playing MD? :D

..i think Rexy was speaking/talking about the reality of his team, more so than him "looking down" at INA's TC & UC teams. The comments, being printed by the presses/medias, like a few BCers had mentioned, could've also been taken out of context/misinterpreted.:cool:

For Rexy - since he is working and being paid as a Malaysian, of course he will comment something about his team's/players' chances vs. Indonesia. And i think he's saying so by looking at the reality. Reality is, his anak-latihan (his trainees) have equal chance playing against their INA counterparts...realistic??..:confused:

Just thought of another way of explaining. Suppose China wants to lose (for whatever reason). Which one do you prefer: seeing LD putting on a show and BCL getting "injury" half way, or seeing LD & BCL pairing up and playing MD? :D

If KOR wins MAS tonight, they can still secure(?) their goal - to be third ranked.

Yesterday, MAS won ENG with no games lost. And if now KOR finishes to lose to ENG with only a game(in 1st MS) won, and tonight won MAS with at least 2 games lost, then KOR will be the third even though they win.

In short, KOR can be easily to be third, even though they win MAS by just losing 2 games in all the 5 matches. :cool:

Each qualified team for the Final will be guaranteed at least 3 matches.
The top team in each group is through to the QF.

To avoid teams 'fixing' their line-ups, they should introduce a rule that after the end of the group matches, a re-draw takes place placing all the winners of each group as the top 4 seeds in the quarterfinals (seeding based on original entry into the Cup seeding). The top 4 seeds will not be meeting one another until at least the semis).

The runners-up teams from the round robin group matches enter into a redraw to see who of the top 4 teams they will each play in the quarterfinals.

3rd team in the group round robin match gets eliminated. Also, the redraw means you don't just aim to get 2nd thinking you will avoid playing an obvious winner of another group in the quarterfinals.This way, your aim is always to finish top of the group to avoid playing China until at least the semi finals.

Too complicated... To me, a team CANNOT lost twice in a group.. If u lost twice u will rank last (3rd) in a group. And in each group (A,B,C,D), only 2 team will be qualify to Quoter final. Means, total of of 8 teams in Quoter final..

IF Korea LOST to MAS, they are LAST rank.. How can them qualify to Quoter final as well.. Someone pls clear my doubt.. tq

The rule doesn't say only the top 2 will qualify for the next round :cool:

The rule says:
Each qualified team for the Final will be guaranteed at least 3 matches.
The top team in each group is through to the QF.
The second and third team in each group will play again tomorrow in a playoff, determining the 4 teams to play each group winners.

I think the system is ok, but suggest the playoff will be re-draw, so if you are second and third team in each group, the draw will randomly put you in any path, then you cannot do what S.Korea did, CHOOSE who you want to play in quarter/semi final.

I think INA fans would prefer playing ENG in QF than having either KOR/MAS. So, KOR's moves saves our troubles of thinking how to best avoid the seeded teams in QF. At the same time, it will ensure the elimination of one strong team (either KOR or DEN) in the QF.

I suggested this format yesterday in another thread (can't remember which one–there are so many TC threads going around), except I said to redraw after the QF to keep things random and more exciting.

If they beat MAS 3-2, they might just got their wish of ended up 3rd. They will have the same 4-6 on ties won-lost with ENG, but ENG will finish 2nd courtesy of the victory this morning.

MAS will still ended up 1st because of their much superior record: 5-0 and 2-3 (if they lose later) of 7-3.

I have a feeling KOR might just send a team that will beat MAS 3-2...but not more than that.

MAS can spoil KOR's day by fielding all reserves, except one LCW. LCW will get the one pt needed for MAS, and MAS will get their wishes of not wanting KOR to end up 3rd, instead, feed them to INA for an early titanic battle in QF because its obvious that they will want to avoid INA in QF and prefer to play DEN.

Strategy plays more important role in Team event, we may not agree the way Korea handles the situation but if it works then credit to their master plan else lose face and lose respect.
Anyway, Malaysia should go all the way out and ready to face China in the semi final, we are usually better playing underdog part.
