On 17/5 morning, when we were having our breakfast, suddenly 3 uncles approached us and asked...ladies, r you from S'pore or M'sia? we said, M'sia...then he continued...anyone of you from Badminton Forum? we said, yes, we are from BC....then...he asked...which one is Louisa?....('Am i so famous?' came thru my mind)...I said, I am....then, the guy started to introduce himself...I am Tony, he said...and 3 of us (luyi, aileen n i) were like...oh ya, how can we forgot about him....:D:D:D

You see...without any picture, Uncle Tony managed to spot us...wow, how sharp he is...and tell you, when he partner with uncle Loh, they became the 1st MD in BC...:D play with speed, accuracy and power....

Of course, all Uncles are sharp by definition. Besides, there are no other sister lookalikes around, other than you and luyi80.

Uncle Tony actually tried to find me the day earlier. I'm sure I gave my real name and contact to him, but he used my BC Nickname to ask reception to locate my room, obviously I am not registered under my nick ........ :D

And u r rite, Uncle Tony and Uncle Loh more than a match to Jimbo's jumping smashes, kakakakaka ........

Anyway, good to see you guys, Tony.

Thank goodness fastdrop meditated for me, or else I would have missed my flight!

I was taking pictures of the 'golek' (?) wooden puppets when fastdrop and Rico (his constant Filipino companion) suddenly appeared and we engaged ourselves in pleasantries.

I then showed him the Indonesian tabloid picture of Rudy and him appearing with other INA supporters with the clapper balloons. We took sometime discussing the picture. Suddenly I remembered hcyong was supposed to be waiting for me to get to the departing plane. I then cut short my conversation and rushed out of the shop to meet hcyong.

He was nowhere to be seen so I assumed he must have gone straight to the departure gate. When I reached there, the attendants told me I was the "last" passenger with 2 mins to spare before takeoff! What a close shave! But thanks to Francis aka fastdrop for his intuitive 'prayer'. :)

But I have no time to buy one doll to replace the very old one bought many, many years ago!

The podium area was a natural setting to take pics and for being photographed. We were lucky to be able to enter this arena as we had our VIP passes around our necks. Others were prohibited by the security people. Thanks to Rudy again. ;)

That English gentleman, on whose shoulders Rudy was resting, seems to be the regular commentator from Singapore. Forgot his name but he was more knowledgeable on rugby and was perhaps once the national coach for Singapore Rugby, I think. :o

I must the only one who quite enjoys his commentary. I think he's a presents perfect balance of colour to Gillian's technical contribution. Yeah I know he's not perfect since he's not really a badminton person but hey, there we have it...

Actually, I was happy just to find English commentary.

YES! That's the name. Madbad how come you know him?

Oh you should have heard him some years ago. He was unbelievable, using terms not found in the badminton vocabulary, perhaps more from the rugby dictionary. I almost cried when he 'killed' our beloved badminton with his commentary then.

But recently when I heard him commentating on Kendrick Lee during the Korat SEA Games, he has 'improved'. :D

Whatever, he is gifted with a good voice and nice pace.

His name has been mentioned on BC before... as far back as 2006. I liked the way you described his gait... "nice pace" – very nice :). Just like Burgess lacks Gillian Clark's technical depth, you can't have Clark tackle Burgess' role alone. She sounds very staccato and lacks his ability to segue from one phase of the game to another. In effect, I think he acts well as a glue for this successful combo.

Rudy brought along the durian cake but there was a giant durian outside the BNI Building when I passed by on our way to Century Park Hotel.

More pictures in the stadium with Rudy dominating the scene, one of which saw him sweet-talking to Xu for her shirt after her win against Kristin in the UC SF. I think Rudy got what he wanted. :) But I also caught a glimpse of our 'swift' with ther 'buddy birdie' from afar, opposite us.

It was a rare moment for us to pose with the celebrated TC and fastdrop just couldn't help sneaking from behind to join us. :D

Perhaps Indonesia's most fervent cheerleader was also caught doing his act. I saw him at the ABC in Johor Baru.

And milling outside were a crowd of Indonesian fans still trying to get a ticket.

Cat Louisa and Kitten Michelle aka luyi80, surprised us when we first met.
They handed us a key-chain replica of the supporting wooden pillar of perhaps an Iban house as a good luck gift. This was very thoughtful of them as an exchange of goodwill and friendship with BC members.

I had a picture taken with the Thomas Cup when it arrived in Singapore many, many years ago. There was no digital camera then and I might have lost the film and the photo by now.

But it was a joy to see the TC again in Istora Senayan with a bonus to boot as its twin sister, the Uber Cup, was also sitting beside it for all to appreciate!

Under normal circumstances, one would not have had a chance to take pictures of these two coveted cups at such close quarters, but we are different this time as special arrangements have been made for us to don the VIP passes and get near the trophies. So it was pictures galore for me and many others with VIP passes! ;)

The media also took advantage of the occasion and two colourful artistes from the TV started by making a 'joking' conversation, more like a comic sketch. Then they were joined by another handsome actor, I believe, before they finally interviewed an European official from the BWF, who I think must be the Referee of the tournament.

(Well, I tried a few times to attach the pics but failed. I'll try again later.)

She was sitting in the front row just ahead of me during the UC Finals when Indonesia met China for the title. She joined the UC players on court during their motivational routine before the start of the matches to provide moral support but alas China proved too strong in the end.

In my opinion Susi is Indonesia's greatest women singles player and even now her name was chanted by some in the stadium. :)

An interview with Susi Susanti about her 'difficult' badminton life, her glorious achievements, her life after badminton, her views on the present state of badminton in Indonesia and her desire to have her children receive a good education first before everything else.

The Jakarta Post
Wednesday, July 02, 2008

Aimee Dawis, Contributor, Jakarta

Most of us who watched Susi Susanti receive Indonesia's first gold medal at the Barcelona Summer Olympics in 1992 will remember seeing tears streaming down her face while the Indonesian national anthem played.

In that historic moment, Indonesians across the nation were united in feelings of immense pride and joy as they shared her sweet victory.

Looking back, Susi admitted that many sacrifices had to be made to achieve success.

After secondary school, she had to leave her family in Tasikmalaya, West Java, where she was born, to live at a dormitory and enroll at a school that was only for athletes.

She said she was socially awkward because she only had athletes as friends. It is no wonder she chose to marry Alan Budikusuma, also an Olympic gold medalist at Barcelona and fellow badminton player.

As an athlete, her training schedule was extremely packed. She would train for six days in a week, from Monday to Saturday, from 7 to 11 in the morning and from 3 in the afternoon until 7 in the evening.

She also had to follow strict rules on what she ate, when she slept and what was wore.

She was not allowed to wear high-heeled shoes to avoid ankle injuries. Visiting malls and going to the movies could only be done on Sundays. However, she was often so tired that she opted to rest on Sundays rather than to go out.

In order to be a world champion, Susi fully understood she had to focus on her training and give up many things that non-athletes could enjoy.

"It is impossible to be a badminton world champion if you do not put your heart and mind in your goal. I even gave up my tertiary education because I could not concentrate on my game while studying for exams," she recalled.

"But I have no regrets. How else could I contribute to my country while achieving my dream at the same time?"

While Susi's gold medal at the Barcelona Summer Olympics is considered to be the pinnacle of her contribution to Indonesia, Susi lifted up the country's name numerous times throughout her glittering career as Indonesia's greatest female badminton player.

She dominated the women's singles event in the early to mid 1990s, winning the All-England in 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1994, the World Badminton Grand Prix consecutively from 1990 to 1994 and the International Badminton Federation World Championship in 1993.

She won the Japan Open three times as well as the Grand Prix Series in Bali in 1990. She also won various Badminton Grand Prix Series and Badminton World Cups.

She led the Indonesian team to triumph at the Uber Cup in 1994 and 1996. Other than her gold medal at Barcelona, she also won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, the United States.

Susi was inducted into the International Badminton Federation (IBF, currently Badminton World Federation or BWF) Hall of Fame in May 2004 and received the Herbert Scheele Trophy from the IBF Council in 2002 for outstanding exceptional services to badminton.

Until 1997, Susi continued to win badminton championships for Indonesia, the final one being the Badminton World Cup in 1997.

In 1998, she led the Indonesian female badminton team to second place during the Uber Cup competition in Hong Kong. It took a decade for the Indonesian team to reach the final of the Uber Cup again, the achievement finally coming in 2008, under the guidance of Susi as team manager.

Her achievements have also led to her inclusion in the forthcoming four-volume Dictionary of Overseas Chinese Personalities, to be published by The Chinese Heritage Centre at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

Susi recalled that the May 1998 riots broke out when she was in Hong Kong for the Uber Cup final.

Being a Chinese-Indonesian, she feared for her family and friends back in Indonesia. Thankfully, her family and friends escaped the wrath of the mob during the riots.

The international community's condemnation of the May riots was intensely felt by Susi, who was interviewed by CNN regarding her position as a Chinese-Indonesian badminton world champion.

During the interview, Susi said candidly she was deeply concerned about the situation back home because she realized news reports of the riots were much more vivid in Hong Kong than in Indonesia.

Nevertheless, she maintained that she was an Indonesian first and foremost, and would not hesitate to keep representing Indonesia in international badminton championships.

Her pregnancy, however, caused Susi to willingly leave the world of badminton in 1998.

Following the birth of her daughter, Laurencia Averina, she dedicated herself to being a full-time mother. Two years later, she was blessed with the arrival of a second child, Albertus Edward. Her third child, Sebastianus Frederick, was born in 2003.

Even though she and her husband had stellar careers as badminton players, Susi does not want her children to follow in their footsteps. She feels that athletes are under appreciated in this country.

Unlike Korea and China, which have comprehensive pension plans for ex-athletes and offer a host of benefits and incentives for star athletes, Indonesia does not offer its athletes a bright future.

She feels this is one of the reasons for the declining quality of badminton players in Indonesia.

With the exception of several corporate sponsors, including Djarum and Ciputra, Indonesian badminton players and federations receive little financial support for their efforts and achievements.

She shares how she and Alan had to pool their own resources to establish a sports equipment corporation, Astec (Alan and Susi Technology), to support their family. They have also opened a foot reflexology and sports physiotherapy center, Fontana, in Kelapa Gading.

Based on her own experiences and observations, Susi wants her children to concentrate on their education.

Badminton, she says, "can come after they have completed their education. Education provides more tangible benefits than the uncertain future facing badminton athletes".

In spite of everything, she retains the hope that Indonesia's government will learn to value its badminton players and help restore the nation's supremacy in the sport.

Of course I do!

And I'm glad you found time to finally locate us! :D

Having returned from the Beijing Olympics not too long ago, I have to say that our T/U Cup experience in Jakarta was more enjoyable. Of course one reason was that most of us were staying together in the same hotel and we participated in many common activities. It also helped when the badminton venue was within walking distance from our hotel.

But in terms of grandeur and variety, Beijing was superb!
