View Full Version : BC Gathering Pictures
Many of our BC members gathered to sit together at the VIP seats to watch the proceedings in the Senayan Istora stadium with special passes arranged by our ever resourceful and reliable Hauge.
After the matches we dined each night at three different places so far - at Furama, Lagunas and tonight at Mangga Besar. Krisna joined us at Lagunas with two of his close friends and distributed some Djarum T-shirts as souvenirs. We also celebrated abedeng's birthday here.
This late morning we took a group photo with our BC Banner at the Sultan Hotel where the players and some of our members are accommodated. Many of us stayed at the Hotel Atlet Century Park which was arranged by abedeng. Yesterday, we also took some pics with the banner inside the stadium during a break in between matches.
At 3 pm tomorrow we will converge at the Djarum courts for a game of badminton, many thanks to Gunawan who initiated the arrangement and followed up by Rudy.

jasonmarc 05-17-2008, 10:26 PM Thanks uncle Loh.......
abedeng 05-17-2008, 11:23 PM Unfortunately, due to a "technical glitch" (Hauge forgetting to inform Fastdrop on the photo-shoot), fastdrop is missing in the gathering pix with banner at the official hotel.
BTW, Jimbo was more interested in comparing his height against the players when taking pictures with them. Until now, he still can't believe that Le Hyo Jung is taller .......:p

Krisna 05-18-2008, 09:56 PM ...:p...everyone thought pjswift is a guy also, but turns out to be a lady. So, what made you guys thought Krisna is a gal??..:p :) :p
pjswift is a gal? :p
In the Indian mythology Mahabhrata, Krisna was the smartest, wisest, and most knowledgeable & powerful advisor [and helper/facilitator] of the good guys. He was the reincarnation of the Hindu God Wisnu [Visnu], the God of Wisdom. Most Indonesians and Indians should know that Krisna is a male character... ;) I guess those who aren't familiar with the Hindu epic or Indonesian Wayang probably do not know the Krisna story, huh? :p
abedeng 05-18-2008, 11:46 PM Yup, Jimbo used his one-time only weapon, to no avail. Even great uncle Loh and great uncle Tony Cheng could handle it....
I must complain though, my birtday cake is too small, can only fit 2 candles, kakakakaka .......

fabcargo 05-19-2008, 07:03 AM I had my own little gathering. In my room which was next to Cai Yun's room. We talked a lot and then I asked Alvent to join us. It was funny, they so friendly towards each other but dont understand each other's words at all. So i translated for them. :D:D:D
My wife thought CY is more good looking in person compared to the photos. Alvent too. But they are damn friendly!!!

Oh many thanks Krisna, the songs are just beautiful and the translation above is certainly very meaningful to every patriot. Wonder whether you have the music scores to ensure we sing the right notes. :p
I also saw Gao Ling enjoying herself cheering for her team on a chair although she was not playing.
LwW^w|n 05-19-2008, 07:58 AM wow!!! thanks for the pics! the members seem had great time together! btw, now i realised that cai yun is damn handsome *bang
too late?! hahaha..joking
I'm sure all BC members who travelled to Jakarta to watch the Thomas Cup & Uber Cup proceedings must have enjoyed themselves thoroughly. I have not experienced such close proximity with so many other members until this trip. Perhaps it is because almost all of us travelled from overseas and stayed in the same two hotels, the Century Park and the Sultan, where the players were also accommodated.
We get to know each other better, to enjoy the games together, cheering and making all sorts of noise, to take morning "brunch" and to dine together usually very late at night after the evening's matches, to go shopping and jalan-jalan together, to do our daily routine walking trips to the stadium nearby for those staying at the Century Park Hotel and to pose for many, many photographs with both members and non-members alike, especially with their idol players. Some made use of their caps and tickets for the players to sign autographs.
All these were made possible because BC members were committed to making it happen in Jakarta. Because Hauge made sure that we got as best a treatment he could arrange. In the end we obtained VIP passes, attended a potrait photo session and had our finger print registered and it really didn't matter which country Rudy made us to represent as we did not have to pay for the admission tickets.
Obviously, Krisna had a great part to play in ensuring the VIP tickets for some of us were available each day for the matches. And through Djarum, we were able to play some entertaining badminton during last Sunday afternoon at their Tubun company premises. We have to thank BC member Gunawan, who was brought up in Jakarta but now resides in the US, for making the arrangements and leading us to the venue with his elder brother Johnny.
I, together with those who also went during the semi-finals, also enjoyed three evenings of 'free' meals at Furama, Lagunas and Mangga Besar. During our Lagunas supper, Krisna brougt along a few designs of Djarum T-shirts to let us choose as a keepsake. Apparently his friend also paid for our meal.
We are most grateful to our "sponsors" and to Hauge for arranging them. :D
And the event organisers and sponsors ensured that we went home with fond memories of TC/UC 2008 Jakarta by distributing souvenirs for the VIP pass visitors.
THANK YOU ALL FOR MAKING THE EVENT SO MEMORABLE FOR BC MEMBERS.
Encountered some problems trying to attach some pics.
Hope it works now.

..for capturing the pics, Loh!!:)...Still hard at work in Jakarta, late at night, too!
Btw, sorry for asking, but who is the gentleman wearing the nice looking cap (3rd pic above, post #49)??..
That gentleman with a cap hails from Hong Kong and is a friend of Charles and Tony, who also came from HK originally. A badminton fan who plays little or no badminton like my two WOW Team cats featured in this thread. He is familiar with Singapore and goes there quite often to visit relatives. ;)
Krisna 05-19-2008, 10:22 AM I, together with those who also went during the semi-finals, also enjoyed three evenings of 'free' meals at Furama, Lagunas and Mangga Besar. During our Lagunas supper, Krisna brougt along a few designs of Djarum T-shirts to let us choose as a keepsake. Apparently his friend also paid for our meal.
We are most grateful to our "sponsors" and to Hauge for arranging them. :D
My friend who paid for the meal was Effendi Wijaya, owner of PB. Musica Champions, the # 6 ranked badminton club in the INA Superliga [badminton league]. He also owns (probably) Indonesia's biggest music studio. :D
He brought a lot of INA artists to watch the Thomas and Uber Cup because he thought (correctly) that this iniative of his should add glamor to INA badminton. And... sure enough, the TV cameras saw the famous pop artists and showed them time-and-time again on TV. INA badminton needs this kind of added prestige... ;)
So, in the next INA Superliga, we should cheer for PB. Musica Champion too... ;)
hFang 05-19-2008, 10:23 AM This trip to Jakarta was a memorable one....Big thank you to Hauge, Abedeng and Krisna especially Hauge for being such a good host...:)
Had a great time enjoying the games with all the BC members who went...had fun shouting, cheering or even 'booing' at the players...:D

Hmm.... U missed out one thing... we had the Msia TC/UC team lining up next to us at the airport and certainly u did steal some glances at "your kkk" and some small chats... LCW was looking at you (when u were "in" their queue) and wondered who the hell is this lady :D must be KKK's fanatic fan :p
FYI, Msia TC/UC took the 635pm flight from JKT back to KL but they were not flying with MAS

Yes...so excited to see the Msia team at the airport...and KKK was quite shock to see me there...He thought Im travelling back to KL as well...:p But too bad...Im coming back to Spore...else we might be travelling in the same flight :D
On my first night, Hauge brought us to Furama for supper. Unlike Restaurant Lagunas, which we just walk to get to the place as it is situated close to Istora Senayan, we went in a few taxis to arrive at Furama. Same goes with Mangga Besar. Below are two pics, one of Furama and the other, Lagunas:
It was during the afternoon of the TC finals on Sunday. Since Indonesia was not involved and Korea had to face China, we thought the attendance would not be as overwhelming as the previous day when Indonesia met China for the UC finals. We later found out how wrong we were when we reached the stadium as the good seats were all taken up when we finished our own matches at the Djarum courts a little late.
We assembled at Sultan Hotel at about 2.30 pm and by 3.20 pm or so, we organized ourselves in 4 taxis to reach Djarum Tubun in about 10 min to find that some young Djarum players were still training hard in the 3 wooden-floor courts. However our turn to take over came shortly and Krisna took the initiative to 'select' and match some of our players for a few games with his friends, and to play amongst ourselves.
Tony and I enjoyed a game with Krisna and his friend. So did Rudy when he partnered Lauren. It was a fun game all right as the pictures will show. :D
madbad 05-19-2008, 12:08 PM I had my own little gathering. In my room which was next to Cai Yun's room. We talked a lot and then I asked Alvent to join us. It was funny, they so friendly towards each other but dont understand each other's words at all. So i translated for them. :D:D:D
My wife thought CY is more good looking in person compared to the photos. Alvent too. But they are damn friendly!!!
fabcargo, nice pics and story.
This is one of the things that separates badminton players from many pros from other sports. They just seem so much more normal, like you and I, and we can relate to that. They are incredibly approachable and are willing to mix with each other, even though there is a language barrier.
madbad 05-19-2008, 12:14 PM I'm sure all BC members who travelled to Jakarta to watch the Thomas Cup & Uber Cup proceedings must have enjoyed themselves thoroughly.
WOW!:eek: It sounded absolutely perfect. What an incredible experience. Only makes being there even more painful. :( Nice summary uncle Loh. I wanna hear more from the other BC members
Here is Gao Ling, putting on a smile as always, whilst XXF was sitting on the floor nursing her overworked right elbow with ice:
Envy!!Envy!!Hopefully there'll come a day where i can join u guys...someday in the future!!Btw,else than lauren,anyone below 25 years old?
Talking about Lauren Todt, she is a very special lady with a diverse cultural background. Her Chinese mother came from Hong Kong, as a result of which Lauren is able to speak Cantonese, albeit with a foreign accent. But she emphasizes that she is 50% Chinese! :)
Want to know more about her, just ask her! ;)
madbad 05-19-2008, 01:03 PM I remember her being in Vancouver at the 2005 World Juniors. It sounds like she was hanging out with the BC gang more than with the US team! :D

abedeng 05-19-2008, 09:35 PM Had a conversation with one INA supporter during KOR - CHN match.
Both of us were disappointed with KOR standard of play, esp 2nd doubles. Terrible match. While we understands that KOR are there on merit, in a final, you are supposed to fight all the way. Even the 3-0 loss suffered by Denmark in the last finals were more entertaining.
I mentioned that it could be stage fright. First time a KOR team qualified for final, and they messed up.
abedeng 05-19-2008, 09:39 PM Hmm, hcyong looks similar to Jung Jae Sung in the baddy session pics. Similar body mass and clothing.
No wonder he and Terry thrashed fastdrop and his partner ........:D

Erwin Kyoto 05-19-2008, 09:56 PM thanks for sharing the gathering and baddy session pics....it is nice to see some BCers pics in this thread....but just wonder where Taufik-ist is...he didnt join u guys/gals during TC/UC???...

U have to "SEE" how "FAST" is fastdrop's dropshots that NEVER crossed the net :D Actually, he did very well... as good as Uncle Loh... I'm quite sure if they pair up, they will be seeded No.1 for a "100yrs old" category for Men Doubles

jimbo 05-19-2008, 10:15 PM wah, looks like u guys racquet are from lauren hmm?:D
What made u think so? We have plenty of local frens here...
Somehow the previous picture did not turn out big enough. I now try to attach a bigger one for you to identify the culprits! :D
Yes, their faces were printed in black and white in one local tabloid, "Warta Kota", Senin, 19 Mei 2008:
She was sitting in the front row just ahead of me during the UC Finals when Indonesia met China for the title. She joined the UC players on court during their motivational routine before the start of the matches to provide moral support but alas China proved too strong in the end.
In my opinion Susi is Indonesia's greatest women singles player and even now her name was chanted by some in the stadium. :)
Tang Xin Fu was such a complete and comprehensive player during his prime that his opponents feared him so much and referred to him as "The Thing", as if he was inhuman.
He later became one of China's greatest coaches, if not the greatest. He was versatile and coached not only the men in singles and doubles, but also the women players as well.
Seldom does he display any emotion, but I managed to capture this rare moment during the UC finals when he felt happy and applauded Lu Lan in her convincing second singles victory over Indonesia's Adriyanti Firdasari to give China the UC title once again.
Lin Dan is shown sitting next to the great Tang sifu.
hFang 05-19-2008, 10:59 PM Hmm, hcyong looks similar to Jung Jae Sung in the baddy session pics. Similar body mass and clothing.
No wonder he and Terry thrashed fastdrop and his partner ........:D
We were discussing about this with hcyong on the day prior to the finals...they are indeed looks very similar...

i think korea's second doubles were feeling the pressure and the expectation. it was their first final and they were then expected to beat China. the young ones crumble, as any players from any country can, under immense pressure.
Not me, I know Loh's tricks. Never will he catch me in "uncompromising" positions .....
hahaha, you just got lucky. uncle loh will be on on the prowl next time. hehehe.

LJJ/HJM are not young enough to be called young. So while I agree that pressure got to them, Korean training and conditioning should have catered for that. LYD was the youngest, but he was the best performing among the 4 MD players.
Luck, has nothing to do with it. The secret is in positioning. I was sitting beside Loh, there's no way he can maneuver to take my pics. No matter how silly I look ...... kakakakaka.
That's the great part of being in the Uncle group, you are smarter. Perhaps the only great part of being an Uncle.
samuel882 05-20-2008, 02:40 AM Uncle Loh... catch me if u can:D:D ;)

Relatively young in terms of Tc experience. and yes the training and conditioning should have prepared them but as we can see, even a seasoned campaigner get the jitters. and LYD was not affected too much maybe because he was the first doubles and he may be very good in terms of mental perparation. but not being the one playing the match that will either give the team another chance or lose it for the team can be less intense. hehehe. but that is just my take on it. hahaha.
wise uncles are treasures.

Aza, remember we said will go if TC in Msia/Spore ? It's happening faster than we thought, he he he. I want to cheer for our gals, they should be more matured by then.
A sumptuous meal of local dishes, courtesy of Krisna's good friend; a sampling of the local teh botel drink followed by abedeng's birthday cake. And the Lagunas staff stayed behind to serve us in this late hour after we had enjoyed the semi final matches at nearby Istora Senayan, just a short walking distance away. And all these were preceded by the souvenir Djarum T-shirts from Krisna. The staff were delighted that Krisna also gave them the shirts at the end of the supper. What more can one ask for? ;)
So we gave Bro Din a hearty birthday song.
Dreamzz 05-20-2008, 05:27 AM damn, that food looks so good.
fortunately i've just had lunch.
i think it's time for a list, say clockwise, of who's who from the pictures.

After the TC finals on Sunday night, it was too late to go for supper. Jimbo and hcyong spotted the road side stalls plying just outside Century Park Hotel where we stayed.
We decided not to call Room Service for food. Instead my two younger room-mates went down to buy packets of local food from the stalls for much more quantity for about a third of the hotel cost and it was yummy, yummy. Naturally we rang our three ladies to join us to partake of the delicacies and I'm sure they must be very happy for it.
I don't think any of us suffered any tummy ache, at least not for me. :)

IN DO NE SIA...
merah darahku, putih tulangku
bersatu dalam semangatmu
IN DO NE SIA ...
debar jantungku, getar nadiku
berbaur dalam angan-anganmu
Translation (Courtesy of Krisna):
Indonesia...
The red of my blood, the white of my bone
United in your spirit
Indonesia...
The beat of my heart, the tremor of my pulse
All blend into your wishes
I can now hear the song being sung with love from Senayan! :):):)

Hish, you guys took a lot of risk eating food from roadside stalls, something that I would always avoid.
As for Jimbo's "multiple" jump smash, not penetrating enough. Great uncles could defend 'em with ease.

Pic 13 (second last one)... just who were you taking there (I see a couple of cats lurking in the background)? ;)
Century Park Hotel where we stayed was a regular meeting place for us, especially during breakfast time. We were able to meet a number of foreign line judges and some coaches like the Malaysian Sidek brothers, Misbun and Rashid.

From Century Park we walked to Sultan Hotel in mid-afternoon to meet up with others for our journey to Djarum. It took longer than expected to get everybody assembled in time for our foray into the famous Djarum courts. Rudy, as usual had to do some last minute assignment but reappeared in about 10 minutes.
Henry Gunawan, the leader of the troop, handed out paper slips with Djarum's address and Johnny's, his elder brother, contact number to a few 'leaders' so that we would not get lost on our way. We hopped onto about 4 taxi cabs, wound into a few narrow side streets to reach our destination at about 3.30 pm for just about a 10-min ride. Thereafter it was all fun and games. :D:D:D
