Sooo, since Lauren is considered good looking by most Indonesians plus, she is Eurasian [Indonesian consider Eurasians "premium" beauties], she gets priority camera-time... ;) And... as I have mentioned before, Lauren looks like Agnes Monica, who is a big badminton fan too. So, people can mistake her for Agnes... This is the most likely reason. :p

In Indonesia Eurasian looking girls are "premium" beauties... ;) By the way, just to avoid any confusion: Lauren is Eurasian because she's half-Chinese. But Agnes Monica is not Eurasian, she's 100% Chinese Indonesian. ;) Agnes just have Eurasian features from several angles.

This man in the middle is Kartono [a.k.a. Kim Tek], the 1983 and 1984 All England MD Champion. ;) As All England Champ, he partnered with Heryanto. But later on, he was surprisingly partnered with Liem Swie King at the last minute to help win the fifth and final match of the 1984 Thomas Cup in KL. Not many people outside INA knew that he was Liem Swie King's partner when they were both juniors. So the CHN team of 1984 was surprised with this last-minute combo.

In 1985, he spent the full year partnered with Liem Swie King and defeated Tian Bingyi-Li Yongbo several times... ;)

Little known fact: Ade Rai was a badminton athlete at PB. Djarum before he was a bodybuilder. He trained together with Ardi B. Wiranata under Coach Tan Joe Hok [All England Champ 1959] in the Djarum courts where the BC gang played last Sunday...

Even though Ade was tall and strong, he could not compete as a top world-class badminton player. At that time, INA was very blessed with so many talents, even Ade's Djarum clubmates at that time consist of: Ardi Wiranata, Alan Budikusuma, Haryanto Arbi, Lioe Tiong Ping, Fung Permadi etc...]. Tough era. Coach Tan asked Ade to concentrate in other disciplines... :o Ade did... and became successful at body-building. Until today he likes to hang-out with the badminton crowd. :D

Wow, Agnes is very pretty. I got to sit right behind her and I was wondering if she was a celebrity. hehe. Mr. Hartono and his wife was so humble and gracious. They took care of the US team the entire time we were there. Mr. Hartono even took us to his friend's club to play some friendly matches with the club members there.:)

Oops. My bad. I meant Mr. Kartono. hehe. You were at OCBC? How come I didn't see you? Yea, I was still a bit tired as I had just gotten back the night before. Some friends and I went to see a movie afterwards and I fell asleep thru some of it. hehe.
The trip was fun.
In Jakarta, the feeling of the crowd on the stadium was awesome. Unfortunately, I didn't get to meet any of the BC'ers except for fastdrop and his buddy, Rudy, Ants and ant's friend. I was stuck with the team the whole time. Lauren was luckier, she snuck away from the team a few times to hang out with the rest of the BCers.
Thailand was a blast, the Thai team took us to the beach for 2 days, then 2 more days in the mountains.
This trip was great thanks to all the great people taking care of us in both Jakarta and Thailand.

Kartono / Kim Tek was fondly remembered by INA fans after his MD win [with Liem Swie King] over China in the 1984 Thomas Cup. But individually his best achievement was his 2 All England MD title with Heryanto. And yes, I remembered them defeating LYB many times. I still remember the 1985 INA Open win that I watched live... ;)

Kartono & Liem Swie King were from Djarum Badminto Club since they were juniors and won the Boy's Doubles Under 19 National Championship together. Heryanto joined Djarum afterwards and partnered with Kartono since Liem Swie King wanted to mainly concentrate in singles for a couple of years back then...
