From wikipedia... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badminton
Men's doubles player Fu Haifeng (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fu_Haifeng) of China set the official world smash record of 332 km/h (206 mph) on June 3, 2005 in the Sudirman Cup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudirman_Cup). The fastest smash recorded in the singles competition is 305 km/h (189 mph) by Taufik Hidayat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taufik_Hidayat) of Indonesia.[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badminton#cite_note-16)

i was told that it was in fact 235km/h instead of 335km/h which would've passed FHF's 332km/h.

oh, coz i also heard from the TV that LD did a 339km/h jump smash...

235km/h? Too slow from a top pro.
ye333

It may be sliced. 235km/h is common for LCW. It's a little bit slow for LD though. But on the other hand, most of LD's smashes (even seemingly full power ones) are around 280 - 290, still pretty far from 332.

just to clarify. If Lin Dan did hit a smash of 329kmh then this would be a record for fastest smash for a singles player, but not the fastest smash overall, which would still be Fu at 332kmh.
Lindan didnt have any smashes more than 300 kmh in the final against Park.

yes, it will be for single.
yet, we need confirmation from IBF for this?
or, we assume or take granted that this is the new record?

I noticed JungJS (LeeYonDe's partner) and ZhengZB also have very powerful smashes even in the rubber game  ZZB broke one of his rackets during the match against KOR MD2...

Anyone can explain?
Personally it's hard for me to believe LD can smash that hard. Never seen him smash >310km before.

the picture shows 339km/h. if this is true, then LD would be the new record holder. there is no confirmation yet.
i heard that the commentator did admit that it was his mistake and was indeed 239km/h. so... we'll have to wait and see.

05-20-2008, 11:41 AM
the commentator (Gillian) hv checked with the person whom are monitoring the shuttle speed and i heard that it is 239km/h, not 339km/h...
mistake in entering the figures...
jimbo
05-20-2008, 11:45 AM
During the MD matches, I had repeatedly monitored the "big plasma" that was showing the speed of the shuttle... NEVER had I seen any 300++km/h... so, NO ONE had broken the record... FHF still holds the record, i believe so...

Discussed a billion times before. This is not an official speed record.

it's not an official BWF but taken as the world record by the Guiness Book of Records. depends how you define 'official' I suppose.

Its not on a match at Japan Open 2009, but on a test trial/demo for Arc ZS. So cant be compared. The smash it self is recorded by GBR, but not on BWF record because its not in a match situation.

Is it really in Guiness? I highly doubt it because Guiness asks for reproducible results, with their officials present. Or else any car manufacturer can say "O my car goes to 270mph in our lab! No problem!!"

I think it is official made under guiness controlled and repeated.. But the way of measurment was very different.. in the Yonex test they use a highspeed camera and then calculates the initial speed of the millseconds when the shuttle leaves the stringbed.
the BWF records (332 km/h and the ones you see on TV during thomas cup are radar speeds much like when you measuer tennis serves etc. with a radar gun.. so the speeds are not really comparable.
The Yonex speed is quite uninteresting as there are no other similar speed tests to compare it to..
Its like introducing a new car telling everyone it does 0-3mph in 0,1 seconds.. this accelleration figure is quite menaingless if every other car maker uses 0-60mph as measurment..

Guiness does not have representatives present at all records, but will outline the controls & recordings of events in order that they are ratified against their own criteria.
On the subject of a controlled environment (ie not a competitive match) I believe Simon Archers record (264kph) was done under controlled conditions.

u have a point there...
from thomas cup 2010...
I would say... on average players' smashes are around
woman single 220kmh
women double 250kmph
men single 260kmph
men doubles 280kmph
Taufik men single record of 318kpmh & Fu Hai Feng 332kmph are very rare...

As far as I can recall, none of the smashes displayed came remotely close 300 kph at this TC/UC. 280+ kph was the top end for men's. I think 240+ kph for women's.

Not trying to confirmed anything. Yonex has a poster at 2010 TC in Malaysia showing TBH breaking the smashing speed record, with a Guinness certificate. I have posted the photos in the following. See photo 4 & 5

with new top of the line yonex radar gun from 2020...
hahahahahahah.. ^^ :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:p:D:D:D

on a more serious note though
IMHO, they should try to keep measuring variables consistent
such as the type of radar gun...
or else, the results are meaningless.
Some international body (BWF) needs to regulate this...
well, I guess the 421km/h is better from a marketing point of view.. :D
imagine saying to a friend, who plays tennis:
"you think tennis is tough, badminton shuttlecock has reached speeds of ____km/h!!" :D:D
