Oldhand 05-27-2008, 06:38 AM Quite a few top players will skip this year's Singapore Open:
(scann has helpfully posted the tournament draw here (http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showpost.php?p=886015&postcount=11))

Luck of the draw: Zheng Bo & Gao Ling
Curse of the draw: Muhammad Rijal & Greysia Polii, Flandy Limpele & Vita Marissa
And finally...
Perhaps since the famed INA-US MD combo of Candra & Tony is missing, the girls have decided to have their own transnational WD combos ;)
So, this tournament will see an India-Canada team (Saina Nehwal & Anna Rice) and a Germany-Canada team (Nicole Grether & Charmaine Reid).
However, playing both singles and doubles might not be easy on the first combo.
In singles, Saina Nehwal has Yao Jie and Yip Pui Yin in her path... and Anna Rice has the formidable Tine Rasmussen ahead. Stamina will be required in truckloads
Dreamzz 05-27-2008, 07:35 AM i don't think TH's draw is too bad actually.

Apart from Zhang Yawen & Wei Yi Li, which top pair isn't playing?
Anyway, Zhang Yawen is missing from the XD draw as well.

the korean, lee & lee
Oldhand 05-27-2008, 09:14 AM I don't think ronald susilo has luck of the draw. after all, he is playing BOONSAK!!! =)
Boonsak's current form (and physical fitness - or, rather, the lack of it) is unlikely to worry Susilo too much ;)
Even against the relatively mild Chetan Anand (at the recent India Open), Boonsak had to work up quite a sweat. In contrast, (knowledgeable sources tell us that) Susilo has been training hard - eyeing a possible peak in August.
Assuming he disposes off Boonsak, Susilo then has Roslin Hashim in his way - and Roslin is now, at best, pre-quarter tournament fodder.
Further on, Susilo will run into one of these three: Lu Yi, Andrew Smith or Kenneth Jonassen.
Of these, if the very very fast Lu Yi gets rid of Smith or Jonassen, Susilo could be in trouble.
If, however, the unpredictable Andrew Smith gets rid of Jonassen and Lu Yi, Susilo can breathe easy.
Lastly, should the mercurial Jonassen hold off Smith and Lu Yi, Susilo should still be good for a semi-final berth.
Of course, if Susilo hasn't fully regained his fitness, it will be another story altogether. But the news is that he has :)
Oldhand 05-27-2008, 09:37 AM AlanY is right... and the list is amended :)

Is just purely his opinion, luck can only take you that far and you have to be good to get deep into the round. Chong Wei seems to have good draw but if he doesn't play to his level then he will be history too.
If Anup able to beat Taufik then is not because Taufik have a tough draw rather at this stage of their careers, Anup is a better player. Simply, if you don't come prepare then ready to accept the defeat!

well, i don't think his current form should be used to measure his luck of the draw. i would say, for a 3rd seed, his path to the semis is pretty good.

Surely, Taufik is plain unlucky to have drawn Anup as his first opponent.
On current form, it'd be surprising if Taufik got past anyone in the draw, much less Anup who's beaten him convincingly not too long ago.
The name Tanongsak should ring a loud and recent bell ;)
Noridayu 05-27-2008, 05:46 PM He played during recent satelle tourney in Spore, most probably for club.

still. boonsak IS a good player. no denying that fact. and i think there will be more motivation for him since he is defending the SO title. (though of course, susilo has the home crowd). in all objectivity, casting national loyalty aside, i personally think boonsak has more talent than susilo.
i think that this match is going to be the most exciting out of all the first round matches. even more than taufik vs anup. can't wait.

Yup, Anup is potential threat for TH at first round since the Indian player had downed him with rubber sets in last year World Championship.
tjl_vanguard 05-28-2008, 08:21 AM based on current TH's form, he might be out as soon as 1st round.. but u never noe!! :D
badders7 05-28-2008, 08:57 AM According to danish federation home page Jonassen has pulled out of Singapore Open: http://www.badminton.dk/Nyheder/Nyhedsarkiv%202008/Maj%202008/Jonassen%20melder%20fra%20til%20Singapore.aspx
Translated version:
Kenneth Jonassens back injury forces the danish star to withdraw from Singapore Open. The Super Series tournament is being played in the beginning of June.
The danish players injury occured at the world championships (Thomas Cup) in Indonesia and meant that Kenneth didn't play in the deciding match against Korea. Since he got back home Jonassen has been recieving intense treatment by physiotherapist Martin Baun and has accordingly trained easily to build up his form again. - I'm not going to Singapore. It wouldn't really make sense when I haven't been training for 14 days, says Jonassen. - I'm not in need of tournaments and it has helped a lot on my back to have a week off. So there is no reason to force the training just to be able to play in Singapore.
But one thing is the rational decision, the irrational feeling of wanting to go is something else. Singapore is a tournament with a special place in Kenneths heart: - I won Singapore in 2004 as the first european ever. That's my biggest win to date. That's why I would like to go back to say goodbye. Also when I see the draw, it really makes me want to play, says the experienced player, who now misses his last chance of reclaiming the title. Kenneth Jonassen will stop his international career after Denmark Open in octobre.

Maybe you should ask GO fans whether it's boring without CHN top guns (GO08) or with CHN top guns (GO07) where they did not play the MS final.

what is GO? btw.....
pjswift 05-31-2008, 08:32 AM With some unexpected, unfortunate withdrawals, it presents an opportunity for those playing to earn ranking points at perhaps 50% of the usual SS effort. That's too good a bonus to miss. For some special ones, there are other good reasons:
1) LCW
The last time LCW met PG was in HKO07, some six months ago. Should be of interest to LCW to check out how PG outlasted PSH in 80 mins TC QF.
2) kkk/tbh
This pair should not worry about losing confidence if they don't do well in SO. Instead they should play here with the objective of checking out what other gaps they may have in their partnership. Then Rexy can do a comprehensive overhaul instead of fixing some leaks and missing some latent ones. That way, they can go to OG08 with thorough preparations and more faith.
3) TH
Is he confirmed not coming? That would be a pity. Maybe he did not like the draw.Wait till the IO draw which could be worse. But what's the real reason? Surely it cannot be Anup phobia? Anup's just coming back from injury. TH lost to Anup in WC because he was caught napping. TH can't possibly nap twice.
Meantime, may I wish Hendra full and speedy recovery. It's sad to hear my fave INA MD being down.
pjswift 05-31-2008, 08:35 AM what is GO? btw.....
Gentlemen Only. Seriously, it's German Open.

huangkwokhau 06-04-2008, 02:14 AM LWW/CTF also withdrew from Singapore Open.
I wont be surprised either Wang Lin or Zhu Jing Jin withdraws as it is too far and expensive at the same time to face each other in 1st round.
May be it is good to have a draw a day before tournament starts.

samuel882 06-05-2008, 11:54 PM All the while we've been worrying about MAS uncles, now KKK Pulak.
Why dont just send a scatch pair (if it is allowed) to OG - CTF/TBH :D

..and TBH. KKK everyone thought ok, no problem.
Cannot lah for OG, must be in top 16. Too late to send Fuzzy, cannot change already. Spore Open, maybe but uncles said want to stay home & train. Uncle Ah Fook must train together with his partner mah.
For OG, someone from MOM did say can change provided one partner is still playing & the replacement is also "registered player". Registered player mean registered to play in OG?

Registered player should meants any players active in the current circuit and got a BWF ID

I finally found the OG rules :
4. Substitutions
4.1. A player/pair may participate in an event of the Olympic Games Badminton Competition only
if the player's/pair's entry is made by the closing date for entries as established by the relevant
Olympic Games Organising Committee.
4.2. After the closing date for entries but before the draw is made, a player who has entered may
be unable to take part through illness, injury, or other unavoidable cause. That player's place
in singles or doubles or both can be taken by a player from the same NOC who has already
entered another Olympic Badminton event, provided the player or resulting pair would have
been the next to be invited following the withdrawal.
4.3. No changes or substitutions of any kind can be made to the draw after it has been made.
http://internationalbadminton.org/statues-pdf/OLYMPIC%20GAMES%20REGULATIONS%20FOR%20BADMINTON%20 COMPETITIO.pdf
means registered for OG.
ye333 06-06-2008, 11:36 AM Ah 3 sets. That means KKK/TBH were indeed pretty "friendly" in that match. :D

Badminton: Kien Keat out of Singapore Open
By Ajitpal Singh
2008/06/07
KOO Kien Keat has been ruled of next week's Singapore Open (June 10-15) after a freak accident at the National Sports Council (NSC) in Bukit Jalil on Thursday. In the 4pm incident, Kien Keat suffered deep cuts to his right hand and right upper thigh when a glass partition near the Jungle Gym shattered when he rested his hand against it.
The cut just below his right elbow needed 20 stitches. It is not known how many stitches the cut on his thigh needed. However, Kien Keat is not in any danger of missing August's Olympic Games as he is expected to be back in training in three weeks. The Singapore Open was to be Kien Keat and partner Tan Boon Heong's final outing before the Beijing assignment.
They are the second Malaysian pair to pull out from the event which is already experiencing a host of absentees of world class shuttlers. World No 4 Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah pulled out last week.
According to national doubles coach Rexy Mainaky, a scan on Kien Keat's injury revealed that the shuttler suffered a minor muscle tear in the right hand.
"It's not serious but I hope his wounds will not get infected as if they do, he will need more time to make a full recovery," said Rexy at Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara yesterday.
"However, I want to stress that he is in no danger of missing the Olympic Games. Kien Keat will start rehabilitation in the second half of next week," he added.
Meanwhile, Kien Keat, when contacted, said the incident was just bad luck.
"I can't do much about it. Doctors have advised me to take full rest and that's what I'm doing now," said Kien Keat.
National chief coach Yap Kim Hock said the ISN will conduct a comprehensive evaluation on Kien Keat's condition in 10 days.

The story differs slightly from one to another press as where the stitches are needed (hand, below elbow) but definetely it's right hand & right thigh as Huang described. KKK die hard fans will be anxious.
This is really bad news not only for Singapore fans but more particularly for KKK himself since his very important BO assignment is just around the corner! :(
Hope he could recover in time to give the Koreans and the Chinese a run for their money.
CLELY 06-06-2008, 11:11 PM Hmm, many players have pulled out here with various reasons, Olympic preparation, sick, injury, accident including number of INA shuttlers such as SDK, TH, Alamsyah Yunus, Tommy Sugiarto, Maria Kristin, Kido/Setiawan.
madbad 06-06-2008, 11:53 PM Err... quick question if anyone has any info. I noticed Jun Jae Youn (KOR) wasn't in the draw, implying she has not recovered sufficiently from her injury which kept her out of the UC. Does anyone know what her injury status is, and if she'll be ready for the INA SS. I assume her target is the OG, will she miss the remaining tournaments leading up to it. Anyone? Thanks :)
shawn30_k 06-07-2008, 05:21 AM So many people not going to SO anymore =((
