View Full Version : Best non-badminton shoe?

I find myself in the strange position of not being able to wear any badminton shoes. My foot is somewhere between a US13 and a US14 and has become significantly wider as I've aged (and I live in the US which doesn't help).
Yonex makes shoes up to US13 and when I tried on the 100MX's they are long enough but not wide enough. They crushed my foot right at the "Lateral Claw". It doesn't appear that anyone else makes badminton shoes that large, at least not for distribution in the US.
After trying on about a dozen non-badminton shoes (volleyball & squash, all of which were too narrow) I have two possbilities that might work:
1) Nike Air Tiempo Mystic II IC (indoor soccer shoe) in size US14

2) Hi-tec 4:SYS (squash shoe) in size US14.

Given my non-badminton choices, which is more suitable?
The indoor soccer shoes are lighter and lower profile but have almost no cushioning. The squash shoes have more padding and more side to side stability.
Other factors that might affect a decision
I weigh 210lbs
I run a lot on the court
I jump smash
I have poor footwork
I have never sprained an ankle playing badminton despite never wearing badminton shoesWhere do I go from here?

Hum, I saw somewhere in the description of the HiTec 4 sys is that it also for badminton. However, if Hitec does provide the good fit for you then you should look for another model, I'm pretty sure that HiTec does make badminton dedicate shoes. Good luck. BTW, I would go with the HiTec. Also, look for the Nike Air Zoom, I have a friend that use those, they are good, hopefully they fit you good.

They do make a badminton specific shoe. In the US they only come in the silver:

But according to racquetballwarehouse.com they have a tighter fit and only come up to size US12. So they won't work for me.
The badminton ones are supposed to be lighter but I'm not sure how much difference there is between them.

They may be a little bright for my tastes :D

I'd say go for the Mizuno Wave Lightning 4 in Size: 14.0.

Also, give the Yonex SHB-91M a try in Size: 13.0.
The 91M are very wide. I got the Size: 12.0 and it was significantly wider than my normal Size: 13.0 Asics Tiger Gel Nimbus which are "D" width.

The Wave Lightning 2's didn't do very well in your shoe review (like all the rest of the volleyball shoes). Are the Wave Lightning 4's an improvement?
PS Congrats on passing 10k posts :D

Yeah I was wondering about the SHB91. You said that they are wider than the 100's and they don't have the "Lateral Claw" which might give them a chance. I'll keep looking for them in a size 13 to try on.
How did the Asics Gel Nimbus 13's compare in width to the Asics Gel Rockets? I tried both the Gel Rocket III and Gel Rocket 4 in size 14 and neither was wide enough. I'm trying to get a sense of how wide the SHB91 is.

Yes, the WL4s are much improved for badminton. I rated the shoe already but just realized I didn't update all my reviews. Here's the rating:
Mizuno Wave Lightning 4
Stock Insole
Designed For: Volleyball
Overall: Good+
Transition: Good-
Grip: Good
Comfort: Excellent
Cushioning: Excellent
Stability: Good-
Durability: Excellent
Comments: highly recommended for players who need max cushioning but don't expect too much lateral performance.
P.S. Thanks but quantity of posts don't mean a thing. Most of mine were noise. :o:p

The Gel Nimbus are running shoes. I have no clue on the Gel Rockets but I tried some other Asics volleyball shoes and they were more narrow relatively speaking.

Give the Asics Gel Powerplay a try. I compared these to the Rockets and 1120V and these ones had the lowest clearance, almost identical to the SHB100mx in height.

Thank you. I've tried both of the Asics Gel Rockets and they are both too narrow. And it appears that Zappos is the only place to get the Nike Air Zoom IC (for men, a lot more choices for women) and the don't have sizes above 11 and I wear a 13 (or more likely a 14 in Nike shoes).

Thanks. Apparently they don't sell them in the US. I'd expect to see the same shoe selection in Canada and the US but all the websites I found that sold the Asics Gel Powerplay were Canadian or in the UK.

Thnaks for all of the advice. I finally ended up going with the only wide court shoe I could find in the US, the New Balance CT653 in size US13 4E.
There is plenty of room to use a Superfeet Blue and my feet no longer hurt (the old shoes didn't have any rips or tears but the cushioning had been pounded flat and they weren't supporting my feet anymore)
They aren't light, and they aren't ventilated but they fit and they have good traction and in the long run, a pair of shoes that fit is more important to me than a pair of shoes that is light.
