Doubles pair must have exposure

07 June, 2008

PERHAPS the underdog tag could work to their advantage. There’s nothing much national women doubles pair Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei Hui are able to do right now except to work on their ‘feel’ in gearing up for the Beijing Olympics this August.

With national doubles assistant coach Phang Cheh Chang given the task of guiding Pei Tty and Eei Hui for the past month, Cheh Chang pointed out the duo will need to play in tournaments to get their competitive rhythm in gear.

Thus, the pair will play in three consecutive tournaments — the Singapore, Indonesian and Thailand Opens — next week.

“The BA of Malaysia (BAM) asked me if it’s wise to play them in three tournaments, but after discussing with the players, we feel they need to get accustomed to the competitive mood,” said Cheh Chang.

“In training it’s different, and our skills match players from other countries.

It’s more of a psychological warfare and only the mentally strong will triumph.” Cheh Chang admitted the favourites usually are smashed out in such major tournaments as they crack due to the mounting pressure.

“The Chinese players have an uphill task. Playing at home is never easy and being the world champions is equally demanding.” All Cheh Chang hopes now is for his shuttlers to be injury-free.

“ I ’ve told them the Singapore, Indonesian and Thai Opens will be an assessment so that we can work on what needs to be rectified.

“While I expect them to play their best, they know how to push themselves.” Three Chinese pairs – Yang Wei-Zhang Yawen (No 1), Wei Yili-Zhang Yawen (No 2) and Du Jing- Yu Yang (No 3) — dominate the top three positions while Pei Tty-Eei Hui are ranked 11th.

Their problem is, and has always been, having quality sparring partners that can push them hard. The gap between them and the rest are too big. Much worse than in WS, where Julia and Lydia are bridging the gap against WMC.

So playing in many tourneys is the only way to gauge themselves against the opposition.

I agreed with you that our ladies need more exposure in major tournaments. I believe that I had seen many major improvement in them compare to before. I hope that by sparing with our men, they will improve further.
