View Full Version : Do u guys ever get a hole on the side of your shoe?

Hey, do u guys ever get a hole on the side of your shoe, as in not on the inside of the shoe, but on the foot that u drag when u lunge. I was wondering how to prevent getting the hole, and I am wondering if that's a telltale sign that my lunge technique needs work.

no, not a hole but it is normal to have wears on the non racket foot shoe.
try putting a white tape over that area. If it is bad, sew a piece of white leather over that area

This happens quite commonly on Yonex shoes.
Actually, nearly half the people I know who own Yonex shoes ( all shb90m and shb100mx ) have duct tape stuck on top of the hole.
My friend recently bought a pair of Shb90M's, and those shoes are already showing signs of wear.

I always get a hole on the side of my shoes,
happens quite often in badminton.
actually I haven't met a single person who does not have that problem.
I stitch a patch on it helps really good.
Can be done at every "shoemaker" (don't know if you have that there)
also in leather stores.

P.S. @ drifit: I don't think he means that.
what he means is at the inside of your shoes (on the left for your right shoe and vice versa for the left shoe) where that ball of your big toe is...

The backwards foot should also be used as a brake (the more force-absorbing components, the better!). Turn the foot outwards so that the inside side is dragged along the floor, and allow it to drag forwards towards your front foot.
As well as providing a brake, dragging in the back foot reduces the width of your base. If you don’t do this on deep lunges, you will finish with your feet too far apart (an excessively wide base), and it will be difficult to push off again for the next shot.
If you do this properly, your left badminton shoe will develop a distinctive wear pattern on the inside side wall. This will eventually become a hole. This is perfectly normal, and actually indicates that this element of your footwork is correct.

i have never had that problem with my yonex shoes and ive been playing for over 5 years.
if you have a hole on your non-racket shoe due to lunging, then you are lunging incorrectly. the very tip of the shoe should be dragging, not the sides.

Yeah I heard its a sign of lunging correctly too.
I used to use white duct tape - worked quite well and didn't show up like a sore thumb.
My new trainers dont need it though, they're hi-tech ones with the so called 'abbrazone' in that area - it's pretty tough stuff.

yeah, i only drag the toe part, not the whole side. I got my SHB 100 LTDs recently, first game some parts were already flaking very very slightly, so i wanted to keep them alive for awhile since i cant afford to drop 150 on shoes that often

Personally, I put a piece of medical tape (as it's white color) over the spot I believe will be dragged. Every a few weeks, replace the piece of tape, if you see it's wearing out. Therefore, it takes like 15 seconds of your time, and a few pennies, to save a $80-100 pair of shoes. ;)

You sure about this??? I thought it suppose to be the side, as it can keep you balanced and provide "friction" during fast movement. I wonder how you can keep balance, when you only drag the top... :confused:

where do u get medical tape? and i think ur only supposed to drag the front side, so u can use that as a rebound spring, since if u drag the whole side, it takes a little longer to get back to be ready for the next shot

I see some pro's doing that. Balancing on the toe's only, not the ball of your foot.
The difference is that those people rotate their hips to face the shuttle. Some say it's better, some/most trainers don't care.
I, personally, can't do it in a match.... Because you can't really drag you foot.
here's my worn down 100mx. I use two pairs, this one was bought in December.... (just for fun, notice the gripclaw coming of, on the yellow-like leather...)

I get these with every pair within about 10hrs of use. I just go to a cobbler and get them to sew a leather patch on and around the affected area. It usually costs about £4 in the UK, but doubles the lifespan of a £45 pair of shoes. definately value for money.

if you have a hole on your non-racket shoe due to lunging, then you are lunging incorrectly. the very tip of the shoe should be dragging, not the sides.Depends on your style...some drag the side while others drag the top of toe...the further you lunge the top of the shoe will come into contact with the floor and if it does not then you are not lunging far enough...the side of the shoe in lunging is better because you have more balance from the side....:)

my SHB 99s died in 6 months, the area was becoming really fuzzy, so i got a pair to replace them
looks like im off to get some medical tape, or worse comes to worse sew a patch of leather on there

i am 100% sure about this. just when you are about to lunge you have to rotate your hips so you are squarely faced to the shuttle.
some of you may say that pros dont follow this technique, but watch closely. it's not the side of the foot that's dragging, it is the (side) of the toe. (LD is an exception to this, he does both ways :cool:)

My SHB 90MX are quite old now but is it weird to have a hole on the side of the racket foot? on the outside... Has anyone had this problem before?

BTW Its on the racket foot, I did this to show where the hole is.

that is totally common... i have holes on the outside of my shoe for both left and right on my shb98...

The small hole on the inner side of the non-racket foot, near the ball of the large toe, is a sign of proper foot technique when braking during a lunge.
The holes (or even tears) that develop on the outer side of the shoes (can be either foot) are a sign of the fabric beginning to wear down from use. These tears can also develop along seams. These tears occur near the bend that forms from the toe. To see the stress on the shoe caused by the toes bending, you can place your foot flat on the ground, then raise the heel such that the toes (all the way up to the ball of the toes) remain flush with the ground. You should notice that there are crease marks in the shoe or bends.
