The best Danish hope bows out -
After wresting the first game, Lars Paaske & Jonas Rasmussen were felled by the Thai duo of Songphon Anugritayawon & Tesana Panvisvas (14-21, 21-17, 21-19). Incidentally, Anugritayawon means "The Blessed One"!

Indian coach and All England 2001 champion Pullela Gopichand betrays no emotion as his ward Anup Sridhar concedes a game to Taipei's Yu Hsin Hsieh. Sridhar went on to win 22-20, 19-21, 21-11 after his opponent ran out of steam in the decider. (Incidentally, the bald expanse next to Gopichand belongs to Tom John, sometime coach to the great Morten Frost.)

It took Andrew Smith 58 minutes, five arguments, two half-tantrums and an abundance of errors to dispose of Japan's Kenichi Tago 13-21, 21-18, 21-16. Only late into the second game did the mercurial Briton finally find his rhythm against Park Joo-Bong's latest Japanese protege.

If Lu Yi is a bullet, then Petr Koukal is lightning.
The Chinese youngster was quelled by the Czech upstart in shocking fashion: 21-16, 21-17. (Koukal will need all his wits around him if he is to subdue his next opponent - Andrew Smith) ;)

In the players' gallery, Chen Yu takes a nap before stepping out to thrash Yeoh Kay Bin. (The Malaysian youngster was cheaply shut out by the Chinese senior in less than half an hour - 21-7, 21-13.) Elsewhere in the picture, Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana mentally chalks out his eventual win against home favourite Ronald Susilo while Misbun Sidek and his fellow Malaysian coaches take a breather.

Lee Chong Wei serves to Sho Sasaki to win the first game 21-11.
The Japanese turned out to be a tenacious customer, fighting off the Malaysian's attacks to win the second game 22-20.
In the decider, the Malaysian's superior skills sank Sasaki's boat with awesome ease 21-8.

My apologies for the amateur quality :o
These were shot with a humble Panasonic Lumix FZ-18.

The battery also ran out when I was framing Peter Gade's bandaged left little finger... so much so that I got neither his face nor a clear shot of the hand :(

Hi Oldhand, good to note that you've joined the company of amateur photographers like Sealman and myself and contributed some colour to the SO tournament in BC.

I thought I saw someone resembling you at the Premium Seats section. But I wasn't too sure as I thought you were not as 'heavy' as that big man.
That would be a good place to take shots. Fastdrop was there too but he doesn't use his camera as much as we do. Unfortunately I was farther away in the mid-section and was unable to take clearer pics of the action in the courts but I guess it doesn't matter that much.

Enjoy your shooting! :)

About a year ago, the SIS vicinity was in chaotic disarray. When I visited this place again, it was more tidy and the new Stadium MRT station was already in place.

Being underground and part of the Circle Line, the building was unimpressive but vital to bring lots of people to this sports, recreation and amusement playground much more conveniently than before. In any case, with the National Stadium to be torn down to make way for the Kallang Sports Hub, many outstanding buildings will appear in about 3 to 4 years. Then this Kallang venue will be a popular meeting place for the young and old. :)

Denmark's Tine Rasmussen prepares to serve to Canada's Anna Rice.

Rasmussen's last loss was to Germany's Xu Huaiwen at the recent Uber Cup. But here, Huaiwen isn't around... and neither is anyone Rasmussen has reason to fear. Next, the Danish powerhouse takes on the diminutive Xing Aiying of Singapore.

Malaysia's Kuan Beng Hong has had a dream run of the tournament so far.
Three scalps in the qualifying stage, compatriot Roslin Hashim in Round 1 and reigning champion Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand in Round 2 (16-21, 22-20, 21-17).

The Clash Of The Malaysians:

Expectations were high that Wong Choong Hann would trump Lee Chong Wei - and the stadium was abuzz after the veteran picked up the first game.

But, simply, it was not to be.

Although Choong Hann had packed an AT-900, an ArcSaber 10 and his trusted Carbonex 21, Lee Chong Wei had packed something more - a clutch of highly polished skills. The final score says it all: 17-21, 21-5, 21-9

If Hong Kong's Wang Chen expected an easy time against Indonesia's Bernadet Pia Zebadiah, she couldn't have been more wrong. The Indonesian, who downed Japan's Kaori Mori almost exactly a month ago, was in cracking form, especially at the net.

After losing the first game, Wang Chen looked miserable. But coaches do notice weaknesses, don't they? It was apparent that Bernadet had a weak corner... and, of course, Wang Chen began pushing everything to that one spot.

Final score: 15-21, 21-15, 21-18

France's Pi Hongyan, the reigning champion, will want to forget this one-hour encounter with Indonesia's Adrianti Firdasari. After four wins and just one loss (to Germany's Xu Huaiwen) in the recent European Championships, Hongyan was expecting a cruise up the Singapore river... except that her boat sank.

Playing Firdasari, nothing seemed to go right for Hongyan... and, eventually, she caved in to the determined Indonesian girl. Final score: 21-16, 20-22, 21-16

When Malaysia's Fairuzizuan & Zakry began their game against Indonesia's Rian Sukmawan and Yonatan, the omens seemed to be unfavourable. They broke strings, broke racquets and broke ranks... but eventually they broke the Indonesian youngsters: 21-18, 21-12

The greater the man, the humbler his presence!

A studied glance, a quick scribble and an inconspicuous gait... Misbun Sidek tries to attract the least amount of attention to himself.

Clutching his little blue book and offering curt trouble-shooting pointers, the coach saw every one of his senior wards through to another day.

His courtside attitude mirrors that of the other greats present - Hendrawan and Park Joo-Bong. No fuss, no frills and no outward evidence of exasperation - just a confident calmness.

Not so with Thailand's and Singapore's coaches - they have too much at stake... and it shows.

It's easy to see why female voices from the stands sound infatuated with Denmark's Peter Gade. Age has obviously not dimished his looks... but it has certainly slowed the Danish master. His game is now more calculated than fast, more sliced than punched and more circumspect than adventurous.

But it works... and it's been good going so far.
Poompat Sapkulchananart succumbed in less than half an hour to the Gadian game. But next ahead is the indefatigable, giant-killing Nguyen Tien Minh from Vietnam.

Will the wily Dane survive to see another round?

With so many withdrawals at the top, youngsters from Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore have never had a tournament so good.

It's been a treat for the spectators too... great eye-candy (like the colour-coordinated Anna Rice, the ageless Gao Ling and the ethereal Hwang Hye-Youn), smash-until-die young wannabes and, of course, a few great matches.

And then there's a few who are paid to ogle :D

It's been a treat for the spectators too... great eye-candy (like the colour-coordinated Anna Rice, the ageless Gao Ling and the ethereal Hwang Hye-Youn), smash-until-die young wannabes and, of course, a few great matches.

And then there's a few who are paid to ogle :D

Unlike you who will ogle for free :D:D:D

Singapore's Ju Guan resolutely fought her way up the qualification ladder and then played a magical game to drown Hong Kong's jump-smashing Yip Pui Yin.

But India's Saina Nehwal seemed impervious to Guan's spells... Pullela Gopichand's protege relied largely on raw power to quell the charming Singaporean's delicate game 21-19, 21-17

Coming into the draw, India's Anup Sridhar and Czech Republic's Petr Koukal looked exceptional. Their flags flew high until they met the Malaysian variety of the game.

Sridhar's flat drives and cross-court drives were killed off by Malaysian Sairul Amar Ayob's steady hands (17-21, 13-21)... and Koukal sank into a fatal panic when facing Englishman Andrew Smith's Malaysian game (13-21, 19-21).

Reach and speed were no match for consistency and method.

I'm trying to deliver a bit more than just what's in the picture... especially since it's all too obvious that my pictures aren't too good.

In any case, neither the little camera I have nor the photographer in me is equipped to shoot action pictures. And, believe me, it's quite humbling to discover that :o

After crushing Taipei's Chou Chia Chi & Lee Tai An, China's cheerful duo Du Jing & Yu Yang headed straight for the stringers' corner. That's nothing new - a fresh string-job for every match is a priority for most players.

Carlton, Forza, Victor, Gosen, Yonex - these brands dominate the Singapore Open. While the most preferred strings remain Yonex's BG-66, BG-65Ti and BG-80, there were a few who opted for the Titan Ti-68X and Ashaway's MicroPower. String tensions ranged from a relatively mild 26 pounds to a whopping 36 pounds.

Before his match against Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei, Japan's Sho Sasaki had a new ARC-10 and three new AT-700s strung at 33 pounds - well, he never needed any of them.

Denmark's Thomas Laybourn asked for his NS-8000 to be armed with BG-80 strings at 36 pounds. And, yes, it was done. Unfortunately, his Mixed Doubles campaign ended in the first round.

Maybe that's why he doesnt change shirt in 3rd set like TBH. ;)
And also our Samuel?

Thanks Weijin for the photos. Misbun also happy KBH finally winning over top 15 player. And I'm always happy to see our semi-uncles in action. No coach to guide them on court, still can beat seeded pair.

TBS and Khoo also cannot tahan against fuzzy. Zakry got good reflexes, but stamina may be an issue against top players.

His surprise arrival in the stadium's main lobby nearly caused the stands to empty. Taufik Hidayat was in town for a special coaching clinic (read: promotional appearance for the sponsor)... and dropped in to see how his rivals and compatriots were faring.

"So, why aren't you playing here?" I asked him.
"I wanted to play... but it was not possible," replied Taufik.

Well, what went unanswered is 'why it was not possible' :o

Hidayat couldn't say any more as he was swamped by hordes of fans.

Chong Wei Is The Man, Says Gade

From Dan Guen Chin

SINGAPORE, June 9 (Bernama) -- If Peter Gade is forced to pick a winner for the Aviva Singapore Open men's singles crown, his choice is obvious - Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei.

Not because the field is depleted with the spate of withdrawals of the big names from the US$200,000 championship starting at the Indoor Stadium Tuesday, but Chong Wei's current form makes him the outstanding favourite.

In a tournament where there is no Lin Dan, the world's No 1; no Taufik Hidayat, the reigning Olympics champion from Indonesia and no Park Sung Hwan, newly-crowned Asian champion, Chong Wei, is the No 1 seed and rightly so.

"For me, the two best players in the world today are Lin Dan and Chong Wei. Lin Dan is not here and therefore Chong Wei is the red-hot favourite. Those who want to win the crown must beat Chong Wei first.

"For me, if I clear my early rounds I will have to come up against Chong Wei in the semis and that's a very tricky match. I saw Chong Wei at the Thomas Cup in Jakarta last month and the signs are all there that he is in top form," said Gade who is seeded No. 4 in the tournament.

For the 30-year-old Gade, it has been a season of extreme high and low.

Low when he suffered a lung infection which saw him broke two rib bones early in the year but yet he came back strongly in the Thomas Cup to give Denmark a place in the semi-finals.

"I am feeling good at the moment and my performance at the Thomas Cup has given me a lift especially after the long lay off I had early in the year.

"Singapore is special to me. I have been playing here a long time and won the title in 2006. I like to have another win here and as I say if I can reach the last four and then beat Chong Wei, I have a chance," Gade told a press conference.

But yet the injury jinx continues to haunt him.

After he returned home from the Thomas Cup, Gade suffered a freak injury on the small finger of his left hand which saw his hand all bandaged up.

"I was in the kitchen and then the plate I was holding slipped from my hand.

And while trying to retrieve it, I ended up suffering a deep cut. It was quite bad but that's no excuse. I can still play badminton. No, it will not affect my performance here," he said.

Gade is down to play a qualifier in the opening round before he meets Hong Kong's Ng Wei in round two and a possible meeting with Malaysia's Yeoh Kay Bin in the quarter-finals.

Here's a few of Vitenam's Nguyen Tien Minh (http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=900222) at the Singapore Open 2008.

It's a pity that there are no devices that measure a badminton player's on-court swiftness or speed of reaction. If there were one at the Singapore Open, it would have imploded trying to track the streak of Malaysian lightning named Mohammed Razif.

One of Mohammed Zakry's younger brothers, Mohammed Razif is blessed with lethal speed in addition to a cracker of a smash. China's Xie Zhongbo & Guo Zhengdong discovered this the hard way - by getting beaten time and again by the alternating bursts of speed and ferocity from the young Malaysian.

Worse for China, when Razif was not attacking, he was defending tirelessly. To the hard-hitting Zhongbo and Zhengdong, it was as if Razif's racquet face was as wide as the court itself. Not that young Tan Wee Kiong didn't contribute anything - it was just that his quicksilver partner ruled the points.

My vote for 'Fastest Player of the Singapore Open 2008' goes to Mohammed Razif Abdul Latif.

Oldhand, I assume these were taken with your Panasonic. IS that right? If so, the quality is very decent.

It's the Panasonic Lumix FZ-18.

For clearer pictures at long range, I need either a DSLR or a courtside seat or frozen players or less shaky hands or a stiff drink or all of them :o

If you or kwun want to donate one of your used DSLRs (and an obscenely powerful telephoto lens), you know where to find me, don't you?

PS: These were all resized down from the original 3MB to 4Mb files.

That was her, disappointed after the semis lost. Could tell she was really
wanting to win. Guess the win could have meant a big deal to her for
one reason or another.

Had cheered so hard for her but I guess some things are not meant to be.
Like a friend said, no matter how well both parties played, someone has to
lost in a match of badminton.

Uncle Loh, where is the BC gathering photos?

Sorry, that's all we had. No big gathering and very few BC members were able to meet. So a few of us, namely Sealman, Jimbo, hFang, tjl_vanguard, abedeng and I, managed to take dinner together at the Old Airport Road food centre for two nights.

I met up with Hauge and fastdrop for lunch on two earlier occasions at the "Tofu" food court at the nearby brand new shopping complex, Kallang Leisure Dome Park, adjacent to the Kallang Theatre which is expected to be demolished to make way for another brand new building.

This food court is a popular meeting place for fans and players alike. Will try to post some pix later. :)

But I caught some BC members in the SIS stadium after the matches:
