I was there to witness his fighting spirit to fence off the defending champion. Yes, he has improved in terms of skills and fitness... but... he is still far off from the top level... may be he has just joined the "darkhorse" group, definitely not those big names yet.

speaking technically, he has injected speed n endurance on court. however, he still lacks variety of shots (just like the Viet). Most of their shots are predictable.

Lets not get overhyped for his triumph over Boonsak and we shall see if he progresses further in SO and IO.... will cheer for him tmr :)

I was there when KBH won over Boonsak. I do agree that it was not an easy win for him. He managed to overcome his own fear and exhaustion when he was playing Boonsak. All of us at the player's bench including his buddy Chong Wei was cheering for him. At least he has broken his mental barrier for now. The Win over boonsak will be meaningful to him.

Absolutely agree with both observations. I think KBH has potential but he have to overcome the mental block of the 2006 TC disaster. It seems that he has come a long but sure way to overcoming that.
I felt that he has pretty good footwork, powerful though not exactly very accurate smashes that can be enhanced as a real weapon. Great stamina and fighting spirit. However his netplay need a fair bit of improvement.

It is just the beginning or a good start for KBH but definitely for sure he had overcome his mental barrier which has been haunted him for 2 years.

He must maintain the consistency if he wish to go far. This guy has the potential after all.

One good match doesnt meant he had overcome his mental barrier. Consistency is the key. Won't be surprise if he being kick out during Qualifying round in next SS which all the top guns will be competing

Absolutely agree. The game had nothing to do with luck. It was mainly the endurance n determination from KBH that won him the game. Period. ;)

KBH's been in the doldrums for 2 years since the TC lost in 2006. Before he couldnt even get past qualifiers. It's a confidence boost for him though he lost to Andrew Smith.
Not fully overcome but a breakthru of sorts, hopefully in future more breakthrus to come.

Badminton: Giant-killer Beng Hong

http://www.nst.com.my/Friday/Sport/2266192/insidepix1
KUAN BENG HONG

LEE Chong Wei took a giant step towards capturing the elusive crown while Kuan Beng Hong turned giant-killer in the US$200,000 Aviva Singapore Open at the Indoor Stadium.
Chong Wei's 17-21, 21-5, 21-9 win over compatriot Wong Choong Hann yesterday sets him up for a quarter-final clash with Denmark's Joachim Persson today. Beng Hong, after dislodging defending champion Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand 15-21, 22-20, 21-17 in a match which lasted one hour, now plays Englishman Andrew Smith in the last eight.

"It's not always easy to play someone you know so well. I am very impressed with Choong Hann's performance and his ability to stay among the world's top 16 despite his age," said Chong Wei.

"He is a credit to the sport and today (yesterday) we saw how good he can be, especially in the opening game. But it was obvious he was tiring in the second and third."

"I now have to stay focused if I want to win the tournament. I feel comfortable and as long as I don't lose my concentration, I think I have a good chance of going all the way," added the Malaysian World No 2 whose best performance at the Singapore Open was runner-up to Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark in 2004.
But the spotlight was on Beng Hong who came through the qualifying round and then beat teammate Muhammad Roslin Hashim in the opening round on Wednesday.

Yesterday, Beng Hong's stamina was a telling factor against his Thai opponent which helped book his berth in the last eight.

"There was no pressure on me to win today (yesterday)," said Beng Hong.

"After all I was the underdog and Boonsak is the defending champion, but as the match wore on I felt confident and winning the second game gave me a real boost.

"In fact, towards the end of the match even when I was down 7-13 in the third game, I didn't feel tired or disappointed. I could see that Boonsak was tiring and he was slowing down."

The key win is over BP. KBH needs that breakthrough victory to rebuild his confidence. But expect KBH to see saw for a few more tournaments before his true mettle settles. AS won because he's fresher and we'll have a better SF in AS vs SS.

Remember KBH defeated BP despite having to play extra matches to qualify? How can JP be compared to BP? JP have not improved since. Two years out in the wilderness must have helped KBH grow up.The last thing KBH need to worry is JP.(If you've seen how LCW demolished JP in SO QF,you'll feel very sorry for JP.His confidence was destroyed.)

I have not been following this tournament much, but from what I can see:

I am usually a very optimistic person, but in this instance, I am reluctant to see Kuan's victory against Boonsak as anything more than just a win, that is, that we should look in future tournaments to see how he does before making judgments about how he has 'improved'. I have seen Malaysians unexpectedly beating some top players only to fade back into the scene many times before. Hopefully this will not happen.

I still think Malaysia's best bet for replacing Lee Chong Wei in the future is Tan Chun Seng.

I happen to see Joachim as having improved tremendously since TC06. Unless Kuan has improved tremendously, and if he can repeat the performances against Boonsak (I don't think he did against Smith) consistantly in every match, I would still put Joachim above Kuan.

Looks like my faith in the Malaysian second tier team is not good :(:(:(

Beryno Wong is longer with back-up squad since 2008. He's with some club in his home state in Sabah.

TCS I would put slightly ahead of Arif, he also made it to beat PG. Chong Wei Feng too this year have been impressive. Arif, 19, is ahead of those in his batch but needs experience.
