.
kwun ... Thank you for informing us.
It's just after the Finals of the SCG THAILAND GRAND PRIX GOLD 2008.
Perhaps the span of 4+ hours for the server backup could cool down comments for the expected MS Final between Lin Dan and Boonsak Ponsana. :D:D:D
Cheers... chris@ccc
:):):)
.
haha. it would be cruel to shutdown the server during the finals... ;)
we will see how it goes. if there are tons of good discussions, maybe i will postpone the downtime.
drifit 06-24-2008, 09:30 PM i think it will be ok for 4 hrs.
many will be concentrating on Euro 2008 final.........:D

i knew there was something genius about my timing... :D
...9 pm, this coming Sunday night, will be 6 am Monday morning, Vienna time. The final should be over and our Pemuda should be on his way back to join all of us... ;)
If kwun wants to shut BC down (for back up duty) and have all the football maniacs congregate, sit and enjoy the Euro 2008 Final in front of their tubbies, whilst at the same time not miss the Thai Open Finals, then it shall be done about 9 hrs. earliler (11:30 am PDT)...which i believe the TO Finals should be over also..
Btw, i think a warning (http://65.186.65.233/sounds/televis/startrek/10sec.mp3) & countdown (http://wavcentral.com/cgi-bin/log/log.cgi?id=4167&sound=/sounds/movies/hunt_october/hrotorp.mp3) might be needed...

as Oldhand has alluded to, this backup will be expanded to more than a backup.
with some really good luck, i have managed to lease a new server for badmintoncentral at an incredible price.
here is the spec for the new server:
Dual quad-core Xeon (yes, 2x4 = 8 CPU cores!)
Dual 15k rpm 143GB disks
2GB Ram
compared to our previous dual Xeon 2.8G, the new server has 4 times the cpu and 4 times the disk storage.
and the kicker is, all these upgrade only cost $8 more per month!
i have tested the server and it is amazingly fast.
anyway, so tonight will be upgrade night. meanwhile, i am doing all the prep work for the actual migration.
hopefully will see you tomorrow with a brand new and much faster server.

ops... the downtime just now was unintended. sorry for the brief outage...
apologize to those who are online. since my prep work for the server migration has been completed, and that i find there are few members online, i have decided to move the downtime earlier.
that was painfully long wait for the migration.
the disruptive part is now complete. from here on there should be one more down time in a few days' time and that should be it.
do let me know if you run into any issues.
cheers.

i was looking back at the historical specifications of previous BC servers. BC managed to grow processing power pretty quickly over the years.
1998: some 300MHz Pentium3 that was also my desktop workstation in graduate school.
1999: slow Celeron on a shared server with 200 other hosts
2000: dual 300MHz Celeron sitting on my company's network.
2001: 1.7GHz Celeron dedicated server
2003: 2.4GHz Pentium4
2004: Dual 2.8GHz Xeon
2008: Dual Quad-Core Xeon. :D

yes. in 20 years time. at that time, the BlueGene/L will be the size of a desktop machine.
looking at the forum usage right now, the decision to do the upgrade around 3pm PDT was a good one. there were hardly anyone aruond then as europe/asia were asleep and Americas were busying sunbathing in the Sunday afternoon sun.

looking at the forum usage right now, the decision to do the upgrade around 3pm PDT was a good one. there were hardly anyone aruond then as europe/asia were asleep and Americas were busying sunbathing in the Sunday afternoon sun.
..actually next weekend wouldn't be a bad time also to do an upgrade. As next week is the Fourth of July weekend and most Americans will be away for the weekend.. ;)
ctjcad 06-30-2008, 01:45 AM i was trying to log in during the Euro 2008 first half break. but unable to do so, assuming kwun shut down the server........:p
so honored that some members tries to log into BC when they should be engrossed in the extremely popular soccer final in Europe.
..imagine all the BCers who really hate soccer and want to log into BC, but can't; instead, they had to suffer by watching it on TV...they must be feeling frustrated saying "Why is kwun doing this to us?!?!"... http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/102.gif:eek: :rolleyes:http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/62.gif
drifit 06-30-2008, 01:53 AM i type really fast. :)
i just went and did some maintanance of the post and forum counts. sometimes the post counts gets out of sync with reality.
that means maintenance and edit also counted into your post count. we will never be near you forever.......

will you suggest to boycott BC..........? :p:D
ctjcad 06-30-2008, 02:00 AM ..personally, i won't boycott BC. I'd probably follow the instructions given on the screen, when BC is down for maintenance, to "Just go out & get my lazy behind to play some baddy!".. :cool:http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/23.gif
drifit 06-30-2008, 07:00 AM is there something wrong with my notebook? net? firefox? or BC is experiencing some hick-up...?
birdie68 06-30-2008, 07:17 PM dunno what happen, is it cuz of the server upgrade or what, but i can't get into the forum thru http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/ or any other link from the main. I could do this posting thru the ip address only.

Hahaha... kwun was still trying to fix up a few things for Badminton Central. :D:D:D
Just 12 hours ago, when I tried to log in, I found this message...
====== * ====== start message ====== * ======
BadmintonCentral.com forum is currently down for site maintainance, will be back shortly.
apologize to those who are online. since my prep work for the server migration has been completed, and that i find there are few members online, i have decided to move the downtime earlier.
we apologize for the inconvenience caused... in your service,
- BadmintonCentral.com staff
the usage silly message:
While you wait, how about pulling your racket from your racket bag, take a piece of silk cloth and carefully wipe off all the shuttle marks on it? after that, take your rackets and practice some overhead swings. make sure you rotate your body, pronate your wrist, and follow-through in a very smooth and fluid motion. for extra credit, make sure your motion is relaxed but tenses up at the moment of impact. please be extra careful if you have a low ceiling.

george@chongwei 07-24-2008, 09:04 AM what happen to bc forum juz now???
i seems to cant view the badmintoncentral page!!!:(
damn!
but after i disconnect and try again, then only can open this page.
so far the server has been holding up with flying colors. neither the disks nor cpu has been too highly loaded despite having up to 2000 users online. i notice zero perceptable slow down.
i am not seeing the user number hitting the level that we saw in the TC though. maybe the semi/finals will surprise us.
Kwun, can you fix the broken URL? I PMed you and the mods about it.

kwun ... It's great that our server has been holding up with flying colors. :):):)
However, our record of 2,914 users online on 16-May-2008 remains unbroken.
Yes, the TC hit us at BC more than the OG.
Perhaps it's because live matches from the OG were shown more, compared to from the TC.

yes indeed!!
i monitored the server load and disk access load. server load never went above 2.0, as we have 8 cpu cores it should handle up to 8.0.
disk load is less easy to measure as it fluctuate but it was no where nearly 100% utilized.
pity that we didn't break any record. i saw the user online went as high as in the low 2,000. we will try again next time!

With some server adjustments it should be better. I notice on more than one occasion if one were to post something, the page does not refresh even thou it did post - verified this from different locations.
Also, the broken link has not been addressed yet.
