Understand that Ng Boon Bee, former doubles partner with Tan Yee Khan and Punch Gunalan, a three times winner of the All England Mens Doubles was honoured with a Datukship. Boon Bee was well known among, and well respected by, the top Chinese players of that time lead by the "Thing" or Master Tang.
I wonder why he had to wait so long for this award. Both Yee Khan and Punch Gunalan became Datuk a some time ago.
BTW, Malaysia's youngest Datuk is squash queen Nicol David.

I have three close friends who are Datuks, all prominent Malays. One volunteered a donation of a quarter of a million ringgit because it was small change for him. Datukship also has market value. They are sought after as chairman of companies.

Better late than never. I watched him play and he was one hella player. Boom Boom Bee as he was better known deserves the Dato title. I think LCW should be awarded the Dato title if he wins 'GOLD' as Nicol got one.

The title "Datuk" nowadays are too commercialised. Many of them have the title but they have no substance.
I'm not saying the "Datuk" title is no good. I myself also have many Datuk friends whom i know very well. But at the same time i also met some Datuks which i don't think they deserve it.
Datukship does has its value. Some of my business partners, either Chinese or Malays prefered not to have the title if given the opportunity to do so.
Times has changed.

In Malaysia there is another type of Datuk, more ancient than the present form. Datuks were considered Fore Fathers of the Land or Saints of the Land. You go into the jungle and if you do a foul deed the Datuk will spin a curse on you.

He will get more than a Datuk-ship if he is malaysian.

Wait and see, Rexy will be the next Datuk when mas win the gold medal in OG08.

A Datuk is equivalent to a knighthood under the British tradition. It has very high value because there is a fixed limit of Datukships at any one time, only 200. However, foreigners can be awarded a Datukship and is not subject to this limit, thus reducing its value relative to native Datukship.
There is also Datoship which has no fixed numbers.
But there is another type of Datuks that have a hold on the Malay psyche and Malay martial arts.

kah kah kah, that's a good one :D:D. Or there's a less..... violent way, by virtue of having grandchildren, one becomes a "Datuk"(grandpa).

Nicol David's title is "Datuk" conferred by Penang's Gabenor. Penang, Melaka, Sabah no Sultan. But I'm not sure abt the difference between the Datuk given by Agung & the one given by the state.

He he, Sir Drift, sounds..... drifty...:D:p

I say Ng Boon Bee deserved the honours but I am sad to say the title came a little too late! He should be awarded one ages ago!!!

And I think Nicol Davids should not be given her 'Datukship', yet. We should have waited until her playing days are over. The 'Datukship' title need to have some prestige and honour. And I am sorry, awarding it to someone who is in her 20s just dont sound right, even though she is a world champion in squash.

At the rate we are dishing these Datukships out, dont be surprise in 10 years time, we may have teenagers being awarded the title!

Looks more of a money thingy than prestige. Tan Sri shd be better.

I got a Datuk renting my place for his mistress. Now you call this Datuk? Sure has some priviledges. hehe.

Anyway, NBB shd have his. Perhaps he's more conservative than others.

A Google search (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malay_titles#Datuk) reveals the following:

Federal titles

In Malaysia, federal awards are granted by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and some may carry the following federal titles. Such titles are honorary and non-hereditary

Datuk

Datuk is a federal title has been conferred since 1965 and limited to recipients of PJN (Panglima Jasa Negara) of which there may be up to 200 living at any one time, and PSD (Panglima Setia Diraja) of which there may be up to 200 living at any one time. The PJN and PSN rank 9th and 10th respectively in the rank of federal awards.

The wife of a federal Datuk is a Datin

State titles

The following titles, which roughly correspond to the British knighthood, can be granted by the Ruler or Governor of each state. They are honorary and non-hereditary.

Dato'

Different from the awarding of Datuk, the award of Dato' (pronounced in similar manner as Datuk) can only be conferred by a hereditary Royal ruler of one of nine Malay states.

Other types of Dato':

Dato' Seri Utama is the highest state title, below Tun but above Tan Sri. The wife of a recipient is "Datin Seri Utama" .

Dato' Seri or Dato' Paduka ranks below the federal titles above. The wife of a Dato' Seri is a Datin Seri.

Dato' is the most common chivalrous title. The wife of a Dato' is a Datin, except in Terengganu where they are known as "To' Puan" (not to be confused with "Toh Puan", the wife of a non-hereditary "Tun").

There are also hereditary Dato's from Negeri Sembilan, where titles are held for life by heads of certain families and passed on to their heirs. These are not conferred by the ruler, but passed on through the customary native laws. The wife of a hereditary Dato' is addressed by courtesy as "To' Puan".

In other states, certain noble families also have hereditary titles and are addressed as Dato'. For example, the current Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato Seri Najib Tun Razak, is hereditary Orang Kaya Indera Shahbandar of Pahang and would have been addressed as "Dato'" even if he had not been conferred a "Dato' Seri" state award.

Datuk

A ruler who is appointed by the Yang Di Pertuan Agong, namely the Governor of Melaka, Penang, Sabah and Sarawak, can confer the award of Datuk, not Dato'.

Some state rulers grant awards which carry titles unique to that state, such as Datuk Wira of the state of Melaka and Kedah, and Datuk Amar and Datuk Patinggi of the state of Sarawak and Datuk Seri Panglima of the state of Sabah.

State awards may be revoked by the Ruler or Governor, and may be returned by the individual

Fake or real also the same one nowadays.

Nicol David gets her Datuk-ship for her great achievement in squash.

I wonder what title should the gov give to

1. Diego Maradona
2. Guus Hiddink
3. Peter Schmeichel
4. Michael Schumachel
5. Lin Dan

if all the ATHLETTES above are MALAYSIAN?

Another type of datuk..the malay term for grandfather! Seriously, Datukship being given to players now..Lee Chong Wei, Nicol Ann David (squash), Tan Yee Khan..Eddy Choong before (can't remember when he got it..and given by whom..anyone can help?). Also in Athletics..M Rajamani, M Jegathesan (track and field)...apt recognition for their contributions..but should be selective. Depending on where you get it..it's spelt as Dato' (given by Agung I think) and Datuk (state level) .. correct me if I am wrong. Sometimes maybe politically motivated.
