View Full Version : Zhang Ning is going
BrunoLi 07-21-2008, 11:08 PM Zhang Ning is going for WS, but not Zhu Lin. It's official decision.( I think it's LYB's decision) Xie Xing-Fang, Lu Lan and Zhang Ning will representing for China in WS in 2008 Beijing Olympic games
I think Zhu Lin has better chance to win, since she is much younger and Zhang Ning is 33 years old now.
everybody, any comment ?
huangkwokhau 07-21-2008, 11:12 PM like XXF before...winning WC did not get her to OG...now it is ZL's turn...sigh!
I think ZL has a better chance than ZN.
george@chongwei 07-21-2008, 11:19 PM haiz..zhu lin is not qualified to the OG08:(
Louisa 07-21-2008, 11:22 PM like XXF before...winning WC did not get her to OG...now it is ZL's turn...sigh!
I think ZL has a better chance than ZN.
XXF won WC after ZN returned home with OG04 crown, not before OG04
though I am superfan of ZN, but I think that ZL should go. ZN is famous with her fighting spirit and strong mental on court. ZL, LL and even XXF tumble occasionally due to pressure...not as stable as ZN. BUT, AGE DOES MATTER...
BrunoLi 07-21-2008, 11:33 PM agree with Louisa.
It's a wrong decision to send Zhang Ning instead of Zhu Lin. :crying:
Who is in charge of this ???

ZN still have the chance. She will go for the last hurrah.

just woke up?
this decision are made long long time ago..........;)
as ants said, ZN is still a good contender.
apontoh 07-22-2008, 01:00 AM Would you put ZN's chance of defending her olympic crown as greater than TH's though?
Both ZN and TH have equal chance of defending their Gold. Still water runs deep. You don't know what they are doing right now.

No, the list just out.
Actually it's midnight here in Boston around 2am. I need to go sleep now.
Anybody have a chance to translate these 2 articles to drifit?

CLELY 07-22-2008, 01:14 AM Poor Zhu Lin, her Wolrd Champ title can't guarantee to gain Olympic berth. Zhu Lin must work very hard to keep her chance alive at London 2012...
lamlam50254 07-22-2008, 01:24 AM She will be 28 in 2012 , and her teammates just like wanglin , WYH, jiaojiao and LULAN will be her competitors . another difficult 4 years :o

It's the Olympic rules which encourage participation. I think for any event (not just badminton), the most entries from any country is three.
pjswift 07-22-2008, 01:47 AM Coaches don't have the heart to say no to veterans who still want a last shot for glory even when indications are they are fast going downhill. The thought they may just go out in shame and at the expense of a golden exposure opportunity for a younger, more deserving teammate may or may not have crossed their minds.
Well, are ZN and JE/ML deserving of their retirement gift? We shall see.
it is really a 50/50 deal. ZN is experienced but form dipped lately. ZL form is always only 80% but young and less experienced.
only time will tell if the Chinese coaching staff made the right decision.

rwchen 07-22-2008, 04:46 AM I thought Zhu Lin should be chosen ahead of Zhang Ning as the latter has not been performing well for the last one year but then again, WS is so unpredictable nowadays. I won't be surprised if early exits of the duo, Xie and Zhang during Asian Games 2006 take place again on the Olympic stage.

volcom 07-22-2008, 08:10 AM ZL is too unfit, and lacks the power game that the other 3 have.
Who in their right minds would think just because the decision to play ZN instead of ZL will jeoporadise China's chances of gold? XXF alone is enough to beat everyone, while Lu Lan is super superb and can beat anyone as well.

I Prefer Zhang Ning And Im glad Shes Going..But I Have To Say .. I Think Zhu Lin Had A Better Chance:cool:
cooler 07-22-2008, 12:25 PM LYB learnt from 2004 OG mistake, he put in youth (BCL) over experienced (2003 WC) Xia Z. ZN can build up stamina just for this OG, it is do-able. Experience and mental strength which ZL lacks, takes longer. I'm sure LYB have gotten commitment from ZN to rebuild her stamina before making his final choice. ZN knows her chances. She won't take up space just for personal satisfaction of being in 08 OG.
Shiryu 07-22-2008, 01:17 PM I think this is good decision for the entire Chinese team, to have a veteran like ZN playing along side, to lead by example. It's also nice to show that the coaching staff is showing compassion towards the aging players which may not be able to perform as well as they used to. No, it does not make the decision any easier for ZL to swallow I guess, but hopefully she will have another chance in London.
Natrificial 07-22-2008, 01:23 PM It's the Olympic rules which encourage participation. I think for any event (not just badminton), the most entries from any country is three.
I know this rule applies to all events and participation is an important olympic ideal. But they can always have a bigger draw, qualifying rounds.
But when a world champ and legitimate gold medal contender sits in favour of more participation, that is a slap in the face of other supposed olympic values, i.e. achievement through competition.
Whoever wins the WS now won't be able to say with much certainty that they would have won if ZL (or any other 1 of 4 that could have been left out) had been allowed to compete as any of them are substantial favourites for the gold. That just stinks of something rotten.

Even if there is only one staff, he has been making good decisions on behalf of the Chinese team for the past 10 years at least. I don't see any other countries in this world has better STAFF(s) than China.

how about Australian/US swimmers, they can easily beat the rest of the world but IOC allows max 2 only...is that fair too?like Tyson gay could not even compete in 200 m as he lost to his teammates but he can easily beat the rest of non US..
If they can accept the rule of IOC, why Badminton cant accept it..well too bad...lif is not really fair.
Natrificial 07-22-2008, 08:33 PM Your argument is that it applies to everyone, live with it.
That's a terribly defeatist way of living life when the changes I'm suggesting are not pipedreams (one qualifying round? bigger draw?) beyond anyone's control.
The whole point of the Olympics is to make things fair-er for everyone, leading by example.

The whole point of the Olympics is to make things fair-er for everyone, leading by example.even tho i dont like it either but that's how the OG are marketed by the old boys club of IOC, a private corporation which money and politicing reign supreme. I always had said Opens are the best way rank individual skills. OG is high profile because of superb marketing aiming at politicans and multinationals, not athletes.

it's should't come as a surprise to ZL. ZN remain in the team even tho her performance was laggard since 2006. I think she has 08 OG in her mind or else she would have retired gracefully after 2005. If this old horse is willing to give her last best effort, she deserve the chance. In the OG, mental focus and experience worth alot. LYB remembered what happend in 04 athen when he excluded Xia Z. from the game. I'm not saying ZL doesn't deserve it but i think LYB had weighed in all angles and chosed what he think is the best chance against tine, wmc, xu, etc

ZN had demonstrated extraordinary performance even after 04 OG.
When she is prepared she is #1 in the china team.
2007 aviva open.
xxf vs zn even 1-1 close set.
in the 3rd set, ZN beat XXF 21-3 for the title
2006 Japan open
xxf vs zn even 1-1 close set.
in the 3rd set, ZN outlasted XXF in the famous 30-29 win for the title
In lyb's eyes, the best of ZN after 2004 is still better than the best of ZL in 2007 and 2008. If ZN has no injury and building up stamina well toward 8/08, the choice is obvious.
Simp84 07-22-2008, 09:57 PM if u ask me I think Lu Lan should be dropped instead. She is not convincing at all, I think she is too young and lacking in experience to win big titles. Well nobody know what goes on in LYB's head hehe

I know she had produced consistent results, but to me she appears to crack under pressure.. She is still lacking in the killing instinct.. Compared to Zhu Lin I think she is not a strong attacker and her play is not very consistent.. Anyway whatever it is.. LYB is the ultimate decider

we are unsure of what is gonna happen.Maybe just another 'strategy' from lyb.
But,im excited enough to wait for that suprise.

Lu Lan to me is not going to be the gold medalist. her role as part of the team is to eliminate as many non-China competitor as possible. this way her consistency will payoff and solidifies her inclusion in the Olympics lineup.

for me, ZN serves as the eliminator for her team mates and she will be the source of encouragement and motivation for her team mates. XXF, LL and ZL are good, but lack of charisma of which ZN possesses.
I prefer ZN to retire gracefully before OG, but seems that the team can't let her go. Well, this time, I will give my full support to WMC & Tine...but, if ZN is in the final against non of WMC & Tine, for sure, I will support ZN...:D afterall, she is the GREAT ZN...
giant 07-23-2008, 12:36 AM agree..seldom see woman still wana play a big game before retire..is a good fighting spirit..
reports from China says that the ultimate list has not been submitted and decided, and even LYB himself says the final selection is going out to BWF on the 23rd, which is today China time. the team will have an unveiling event on the 25th.
so there is still hope for Zhu Lin, but even herself thinks that her chances is quite slim, in her blog, she signature has recently been changed to:
"nothing is important anymore."
ctjcad 07-23-2008, 01:14 AM ..to me, personally, although ZN is not the favorite going in to win the WS Gold, the way i see ZN's last Olympic appearance is reminiscent to that of Gong Ruina's last OG appearance in 2004.
Yes, there could be a bit of "politicking" in the decision (between her and ZL), but more so, her performance in the qualifying tourneys solidified her position. And i think, if ZN is healthy enough and ready to go, she deserves to go and defend her WS title.

Not as strong attacker as Zhu Lin???!! You serious? I'd say Lu Lan has some phenomenal attacking shots from the matches I've seen her play since the Korean Open where she lost to Zhou Mi (I think) and also her netplay is very consistent and good.
Zhu Lin as can be seen in her match against Maria in IO08... Lacks the killer hits to finish Maria on many favourable occasions. I believe in that match Maria lost the match due to her mistakes and also her lack of fitness, if ZL lost the first set of that match I think she wouldn't have won the secnd with the way she was playing. LL or XXF certainly wouldn't have let it go into 3rd set when they hold advantage unlike ZL.
Her mentality is always stable like the way she totally destroyed WMC after lagging behind 16-9 or something. She is a player that can't be written off IMO.
volcom 07-23-2008, 02:46 AM ZN's participation, ....Good news fro Indonesia then...
ZN will be the first victim of Maria....it will be a great shock to China....
Defeating ZN will be the opening step of "destroying" the mighty China. Maria and Tine can do that...so defeat the most senior at early rounds and the rest will be a matter of time...:D
In your dreams .
Watch Tine defeat Maria in the early rounds (If the draw permits)

Thats good news for competitive badminton, can't let the WS titles always be dominated by Non-South-East Asian countries like China, South Korea and Chinese Hong Kong. Or by ex-China players from Netherlands, Germany.
Gotta have more pure-breds like Tine Rasmussen and WMC.

Ma Long beat his other teammate include senior Wang liqin, and paddler from another country to won few tournaments on the last month when his other teammate lost to other players.
but still the decission maker choose Wang Liqin as he is more experience...
it's not happen in badminton only,,, so Zhu Lin should not sad...

dont just put all the blame to him
but he is the china badminton head coach!!
so no matter what happen, he is going to be responsible for all these.
remember what happen to YKH? during the WC07.

But george,i always believe lyb has a different way to face the consequences of his actions.differently from ykh.In other words, better than our head coach.
Im bored with his press statements.
If kicking out zakry/fairuz was proved to be a mistake.Im going to forgive the whole team if they just admit that mistake in any press conference.Do not twist ur words.

ZHU LIN is 24 and for the next olympic she'll be just 28...
ZHANG NING won her gold in 29 isn't??
and look now ZHANG NING hunt for her second olympic gold...
so ,, logically ZHU LIN still have a chance for 2 next olympics..

limsy 07-29-2008, 06:10 AM but zl better than zn this year...right???
LYB-Fan 07-29-2008, 08:56 PM agree that the competition is between ZHU LIN and LU LAN ,, as ZHANG NING has been prepared for this olympic after she won in athens...
Defenitely CHINA need an experience player,,,,
LYB has done a good choice,,,,

and now he didn't want to do the same mistake

u may have been deceived.
let say, ZN has a better chance advancing along their event than your older MAL player WCH. Again, stop worrying about the chinese players.
cooler 07-29-2008, 09:08 PM just for nice to hear...:(xxf and zn are in lyb's battle plan. 3rd WS slot will be who has the highest ranking, in this case, LL over ZL.

But XXZ was in his 20s then. ZN is now in her 30s. If her opponent has the skills to make her bend 30 times in G1,she wouldn't have time to unbend and recover for G2.Sorry, my last impression of her was she's rickety.Maybe she can do a U turn, who knows.
giant 07-30-2008, 03:43 AM sure LYB will see the performance between two of them not only this year..even though ZL won one of the match but LL get in final so many times as compare to ZL..hope ZN can do the best for her last olympic..wil she be the coach of WS china team?

Qidong 07-31-2008, 11:57 PM I just hate this kind of selection by coaches. It's completely not fair to the players. Either selecting by ranking - XXF, LL and ZL, or have a selection tournament. Same in Malaysia, keep hearing Rexy keep saying who is going and who's not going....

kyiyu 08-01-2008, 06:36 AM There are many noises about why Zhang Ning currently WR.6 is presenting PRC with seeding 2 in Olympic and why not Zhu Lin current WR.3.
I just checked the WR for women's single at time of cut-off date (continental tournement ASIA game, some time begging of May). Zhang Ning was WR.2 after XXF on the death line of Olympic seeding... Thus litterally she is more qualified (of course seeded.2 by IBF now) than Zhu Lin...
Thus, in my opnion, it is more related to World raking at Olympic seeding cut-off date rather than LYB. (though I will not rule out or argue if there is LYB's influence.

Once you have many quality players / pairs, the coach has to do the cut. Thanks for the "limited entry" rules...

INA should have more MD and XD pairs too.....

Most definitely! Exiting the game with a Gold or Silver medal in OG in her own country, wow!. No matter what happen in the final, she is already a winner. No just in this OG but a great great career.
yen_saw 08-15-2008, 06:05 PM Yes indeed she made LYB a proud coach for choosing her to compete in Olmypic.
cooler 08-15-2008, 06:24 PM lyb made the right choice it seem to went with ZN over ZL.
ZN played amazingly well, as good as, if not better, than 2004 athens WS final
Wong8Egg 08-15-2008, 06:26 PM Please who complained on the first 6 pages should really give credit to LYB for picking ZN.

Agreed, those haters of LYB should go and eat a large chunk of humble pie.
Louisa 08-15-2008, 09:13 PM XXF won WC after ZN returned home with OG04 crown, not before OG04
though I am superfan of ZN, but I think that ZL should go. ZN is famous with her fighting spirit and strong mental on court. ZL, LL and even XXF tumble occasionally due to pressure...not as stable as ZN. BUT, AGE DOES MATTER...
for me, ZN serves as the eliminator for her team mates and she will be the source of encouragement and motivation for her team mates.
Please who complained on the first 6 pages should really give credit to LYB for picking ZN.
Not me.....:D
Agreed, those haters of LYB should go and eat a large chunk of humble pie.
I love pie....as a fan of ZN, I hope she retire with an OG gold, which she made it 4 years ago...this year, judging from her performance + injury + age, I m wondering whether she can make it...if she fails...ppl will say, nvr give chance to youngster, and the reigning OG can't make it...
Anyway, I will cheer for ZN today...Zhang Ning is always the GREAT (though I think XXF fans is more as compared to Zhang's in this forum:p)...don't bite me...;)
luyi80 08-15-2008, 10:40 PM Hmm...I'm a GREAT FAN of THE GREAT ZHANG NING, and I was really happy when ZN was selected instead of ZL, coz ZN lost her IO 08 while ZL won it! I thought that LYB would choose a better form ZL instead of an old ZN. But LYB proved me wrong, and I was happy with the outcome, but worried about ZN's form. But, she won match after match in OG, and make it to the final eventually!!! I'm so touch that she MAKE IT!!! Yup, no matter silver or gold, she deserves all the applauses! She is a legend in Badminton, and a role model to all, SALUTE HER!!!
I'll go home now to support her......Zhang Ning JIA YOU!!!

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wong8Egg 08-16-2008, 12:43 AM Zhang Ning is going for WS, but not Zhu Lin.
