Special report: 2008 Olympic Games

by sportswriter Chen Jian

BEIJING (Xinhua) - Top two seeds in badminton men's singles for Beijing Olympics, Lin Dan from China and Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia, are set to caution their way toward the final through a dangerous minefield.

According to the badminton schedule released by the World Badminton Federation on Saturday, Top seed in men's singles Lin Dan will meet Ng Wei from Hong Kong on August 11, while No.2 seed Lee Chong Wei on the same day will face the challenge of Ronald Susilo from Singapore, who had surprisingly upsetted Super Dan in his first match at Athens Olympics.

Susilo, the "giant killer" currently ranked No.32, also downed the 26-year-old Malaysian in the second round of last year's Swiss Open when Lee was at a low ebb.

"Chong Wei should treat his first match against Susilo like a final," warned Malaysian national badminton singles coach Misbun Sidek, who considered the Indonesia-born Singaporean a great fighter, as he had survived two career-threatening injuries.

In the third round, Lin Dan is set to meet his "bogeyman", Park Sung Hwan from South Korea, who achieved the best head-to-head record against the world No.1 among all other men's singles shuttlers.

It won't be easy for aging Peter Gade from Denmark to stop Lin Dan in the quarterfinals in top half. On the contrary, Sony Dwi Kuncoro from Indonesia could be the highest hurdle for Lee to conquer.

The Olympic bronze medalist enjoyed a comfortable advantage over Lee by a 4-2 margin from six head-to-head meetings. He also delivered a third-round defeat to the Malaysian in Kuala Lumpur in the 2007 World Championships.

If the Indonesian cannot stop Lee, No.3 seed Bao Chunlai, who has reversed his head-to-head record against Lee in favor of the Chinese hopeful, would try to dash the gold medal hope of Malaysia at Olympics semi-finals.

Lee Chong Wei handed Bao six straight defeats before the 2006 World Championships. However, Bao tendered a sweet revenge against Lee by securing four wins in their six meetings after the Madrid Championships.

Once No.7 seed Hidayat Taufik from Indonesia could fully recover from his recent fever, he might duplicate the victory in Athens where the unseeded genius pocketed the gold medal and ruin a much-anticipated encounter of the top two seeds.

Seated in the top half by the draw, the Indonesian "bad boy" could be a nightmare to Lin Dan, his long-time rival, as he boasted a couple of wins over the Chinese "bad boy" at some important occasions, such as the 2005 World Championships and 2006 Asian Games.

If both Lin and Lee survive the minefield, an exciting gold medal showdown will be staged at the Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium on Aug. 17

It says Susilo beat LEE when LEE was at his low ebb. Now LEE is at his highest ebb. So what is the analysis ? :)

Anyone who knows if Lee Chong Wei is chinese? And if so can China take pride if he get a silver? :) Because of course Lin Dan will win gold! I heard alot of chinese people live in Malaysia

In Southeast Asia, Singapore has the highest percentage of Chinese at close to 70% but not in absolute terms because of its small population at around 4.5 million. Other Southeast Asian countries have more Chinese who are assimilated into their culture.

Probably Indonesia has the most number of Chinese in view of its bigger population size, followed by Malaysia perhaps. But there are quite a number of Chinese who have settled in the other parts of Southeast Asia, like Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanma. A Goggle search should produce some interesting results.

But most Chinese who are citizens of their respective countries, especially those who were born and raised there, owe their allegiance to the overseas countries which their forefathers had adopted. The longer they remain in their adopted countries, especially for the younger generation, the less they look towards China.

But in times of crisis, as in the case of natural disasters like earthquakes, typhoons, etc, which may hit mainland China, overseas Chinese are more ready to chip in to help in whatever ways possible.

i think you mean ethnicity not nationality. There may be lots of ethnic chinese in Mal or Indo but most are loyal to their government and country of birth/residence. but i think they are regarded as huaqiao and in a sense part of the big huaxia family.

but China's government are not responsible for their well being, like during the organized murder and rape of chinese-indonesians during the suharto riots, china can't do anything about it and prolly won't do anything.

But even with ethnic discrimination in their home countries, malaysian/indo chinese are certainly still proud to be malyasian/indonesians.

except me maybe haha, i support china first, then singapore, then indo.

Fastdrop used to give charms to his favourite player and he would win. Then later, he decided to 'spread' his charms to other players and the magic disappeared.
Maybe you should just choose one favourite to win the 1 gold. How about Lee/Choong since they can do it but need the extra luck?

The Gold medal should definitely goes to Lee Chong Wei...the most promising player and versatile player of all time. Look at how he demolised Lin Dan at the Thomas Cup. Lin Dan was in a daze as to how he could be defeated so easily. This is because he said he was well prepared to face Chong Wei. Lin Dan is definitely most worried about Chong Wei. If they meet, it will definitely be Chong Wei's gold.

But of course the chances of CW slightly high and this is the "GOLD" that we wish to get it "the most"......still i want to give my "wish" to the rest.....to show my support on them too!!!!

OF ALL TIME  You can't be serious! Have you seen some of the great players in the past, particularly Rudy Hartono, who has won the AE 8 times, for example? Indra will debate with you that Taufik Hidayat is the best! :D

Better not undermine Lin Dan for he could take revenge on home ground advantage!

Keep in mind, when one is full of "boleh" spirit, only records or history which favored team boleh will be used or remembered.

Ex. Have anyone of the Real greats(in badminton) like Yang Yang, ZJW, or Morten Frost, ever been eliminated in the first or second round of like 4-5 tournaments in a roll like LCW did back in 2007? I don't think so.

Most performance problems that players struggle with are not a result of poor conditioning, inadequate coaching or a lack of physical skills or technical ability. Sure, these physical or mechanical factors can sometimes cause sub-par play. However, when the heat of competition is turned up high like the Olympics, the individual player falls apart most often does so because of mental factors like runaway nervousness, intimidation, poor concentration, negativity, lack of confidence or an inability to let go of mistakes or bad breaks.

And Taufik and SDK are more than ready to be crowned with a GOLD MEDAL

CHONG WEI FEELING THE HEAT

BEIJING: Badminton's world number two Lee Chong Wei Tuesday poured cold water on his chances of winning Malaysia's first ever Olympic gold medal, saying it wasn't something he was counting on.

With the hopes of a nation resting on his shoulders, Lee said he was simply planning to take one game at a time once the tournament began on Saturday.

ll try my best to win every match step by step. I haven't wished for a lot as I don't want to give myself too much pressure he told reporters.

Heading into the Beijing Olympics, Lee admitted he was starting to feel the pressure of taking on the Chinese juggernaut of shuttlers, and winning his country's first Olympic gold in any sport.

Malaysia has only ever won three Olympic medals, one silver and two bronze all of them in badminton. But despite being a badminton powerhouse, the Southeast Asian nation has never captured gold.

Lee has hit top form heading into the Games, winning the Malaysian and Singapore Opens this year and downing China's star and world number one Lin Dan at the recent Thomas Cup.

But Lee, who was knocked out in the last 16 at Athens four years ago, played down his chances here of defeating Lin and China's equally fearsome Bao Chunlai and All England champion Chen Jin.

I think the Chinese athletes have more advantages because they are playing in China's the second seed said. But I like the venue – there is no wind and the lighting is comfortable.

In his opening match on Monday, Lee faces Singapore's Ronald Susilo who downed Lin in the first round at the Athens Games.

I think Chong Wei will take RS pretty handilly. It's hard to say between SDK and BP though... my money and hopes are with BP. Boonsak can pull off some pretty ridiculous upsets...
Also I think if LHI is focused and on his game he is very dangerous... I picked him to win singles.

LCW is sure to get better as the games progress. He was awesome against Susilo, controlling the guy - Susilo was at 'sixes and sevens' (lost at sea) most of the time.

Misbun is a happy man - he must have been nervous but had a sigh of relief at the end. Always tough in the 1st match.

I think, now that he beat taufik, wong c h can upset chen jin, as chen jin is far more unexperienced en wong is now super motivated
I hoped taufik would win the game, but I think wong really deserves a medal for all the years of hard work and always almost-getting-it

Certainly we like to see Choon Hann go far into the round but we also have to be realistic about his journey. I am not sure Choon Hann has the speed, power and fitness to play against Chen Jin as I am yet to see any veteran players in this Olympics won because of the experience thus far? Chen Jin is young but has been around for years so can't be that inexperience and cost his the match.
Anyway, one match at a time and lets hope Choon Hann can win over Yu Hsing of Taiwan today.
Malaysia Boleh!

Thats our problem la. Itu lah dia, mentaliti orang Malaysia kito. One win against someone who just recovered from dengue fever, suddenly we feel we are closer to the podium :o. Yes, a win is a win. And yes, I am happy for WCH. But we must be realistic, it is still early days. Lets not count em' chickens before they are hatched.

Look what happened to our archery?? Before the Olympics, everyone was confident we could be win a medal but at the end ... pocik ;)

lets do some input on LCW game. Hopefully misbun or LCW notice it and not make the same mistakes. 2 days away is a precious time to waste. pure mental and solid game now. now or never.

in this game, lcw weakness is more on the half court lobbing. lhi took advantage of it. many points lost in this area. hopefully misbun reminds him that. Also be careful with netting. Lindan is slightly better in this department.

strong points cool and calm. persistent and kill when necessary. More is better than defending as LD will surely try to attack more.

Bisa in the Indonesian language means "boleh" :) In the Malay language it means poison.

bisa has two meanings in Indonesian, it can also mean poison e.g. "ular berbisa" (poisonous snake).

I guess it would be cool(literally) to have bald head during summer, but unfortunately, you won't have to worry about it, my friend... as you can put those shaver and scissors away or save yourself a trip to a barber and send me some RM(the amount which you would have spent on the barber) as I have never seen any before.;)

From the last two Olympics, we can see that the Mens singles gold medalist and bronze medalist have been from the same country.

2000 gold CHN JI, bronze CHN XXZ
2004 gold INA Taufik, bronze INA Sony

Which makes it simple to predict:
2008 gold CHN Lin Dan, bronze CHN Chen Jin.;)
