If Lin Dan earns US$1.7 million last year from his badminton fame, it will cement China's hold on badminton well into the future. Other countries just cannot offer incentives of this scale. Chinese corporations are getting bigger, not smaller, and the bigger they get the more incentives to Chinese athletics. We will see an explosion of this after the Beijing Olympics. In contrast the money from the super series is small change to the Chinese.
That depends if they win Gold or not. The US$1.7m is before taxes i suppose. Even if its half of that. Its still okay.

Yeah, tax is very high in Mainland China. If Lin Dan wins, he can't negotiate his way out :D. He is too famous to . . . :D

i think that the $1.7mil he made isn't from the chinese badminton association. i think most of it is from his sponsors and what not. i doubt the association can afford to pay him $1.7mil per year, and plus tournaments don't pay very well lol

Just this piece of news will bring forth perhaps 10 million new players to badminton in China. This has enormous appeal. Every parent will enrol their kids in badminton schools. I see that in Hong Kong where parents of promising young kids from 10 years old to 16 or 17 sacrifice so much time, money, dedication to improving their kids badminton performance. Some of these kids' skills and quality of play have to be seen to believe. Some of them spend two hours nonstop practising just net tumbles. Some on backand drops, smashes, clears, crosses as well as straight. On another day they practice other strokes repeatedlly. This sometimes comes at a cost. A lot of them don't do so well in studies because they spend almost all their free time on training and competition. For every such case we see in Hong Kong there will be 200 more in China. This is really frightening.

China's Top 25 Stars
Forbes China Staff and Laurie Birkitt 06.30.08
Though hobbled, big man Yao Ming is at the top of the list.
Athletes are at the top of FORBES CHINA's fifth annual celebrity list, a trend that will likely continue in coming years as Chinese standouts at the Beijing Olympics will no doubt use their fame to grab big pro contracts and endorsement deals. Entertainers are also wasting no time getting work as spokesmen for luxury brand names.
They are also giving back, as many celebrities on this list have offered financial relief to victims of the Sichuan earthquake. China's richest celebrity, NBA star Yao Ming, is known for his charitable work but was criticized after his initial donation was deemed paltry. He later raised his donation considerably (NBA colleague Yi Jianlian also gave). Huayi Brothers Media Group, the powerful entertainment conglomerate that got a $10 million infusion in December from Li Ka-shing's Tom Group, contributed through actor Jet Li's One Foundation, which donated over half a million dollars. Actresses Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi (Maybelline China's first Asian spokeswoman) also chipped in.
As is the case with FORBES' U.S. celebrity list, winners are ranked by combining income (salaries, endorsements) with the number of times they appear in Web sites, print publications and other media.
Compiled by FORBES CHINA's Echo Yang, Sunny Jiang, Rong Fu, Rachel Lu and Jane Shen. Additional reporting by Laurie Burkitt.

I heard a rather sad story the other day about China's athletes that dont make the cut. there are a lot of them. the get over-trained and then when they can't make the cut because they're overworked then it's bye-bye. not an uncommon story for Chinese elite athletes who dont make it all the way it seems.
link to the story:

anyone have any thoughts about this? i'm sure that China isn't the only country with such a problem.

From the list, there're only 4 athletes among entertainers domination. Just wondering that Guo Jingjing a.k.a. Diving Diva is excluded from CHN top-25 Stars?! I think she's very popular in China and also worldwide with her remarkable achievement and good-looking appearance.

You know, since badminton in China is more of a team sports. Like the player represent the whole nation, more then just themselves. I wonder if the the team gets some money with it's player is sponsored by someone.
Like if Nike wanted to sponsor Lin Dan, they will also have to pay a royalty fee to the China National team, because Lin Dan belongs to the team.
What do you guys think?

I think this is fair, like a singer who gets promoted always has to share their sponsorship money, income with their parent company.
But I think it is a positive act to badminton regardlessly that a badminton star weight so much in China, a rising country.

I don't want to sound cynical but with Liu Xiang popularity to drop off, plus LD winning the gold so convincingly, Lin Dan could be 2nd or 3rd most popular athlete in china. :D:) To me yao ming and Yi Jianlian popularity are mostly due to their signing with america's NBA and making the big buck, as a performing basketball player, they are not that much special than any other NBA players. I heard yao ming plays ~50% of the games due to many injury and operations.

I saw the short coverage on Liu Xiang's injury on TV late last night. As he and the rest of the runners setup to start, then a false-start. Liu Xiang pulled up, took off his # and walked straight back the locker room. It was very unfortunate that he never get to run.
You are right on Yao Ming also. If you are not familiar with NBA, each team has a 82 games season. As you can in his stats, http://www.nba.com/playerfile/yao_ming/career_stats.html, he played 82/82/80 games each of the first 3 seasons, then 57/48/55 games each of the last 3 seasons. I must say his PPG (Point Per Game) was much better the last 3 years.
Hope you are right that Lin Dan will get more popular in China. He has a very interesting story to tell with 04OG, XXF, bad-boy image, and so on. His winning, throwing the racket, the shoes got some coverage on NBC last night also. IMO, what is good for LD good for badminton. :)

Money matters to losing athletes
By Chen Xiangfeng
China Daily Staff Writer
Updated: 2008-09-02 09:17
There is more to winning or losing an Olympic gold medal than pride - as the cash rewards from marketing athletes suggest.
"Diving Queen" Guo Jingjing is one of the most successful female athletes in marketing thanks to her success at the Beijing Olympics, as well as her healthy and pretty image.
One of Guo's major sponsors, Japanese electronics giant Toshiba, said Guo's image matches the company's global impression of being "perfect".
It is planning to launch a new series of promotions involving the diving superstar, who has four gold and two silver medals.
Another reason for Toshiba's support of Guo is her popularity. A survey on "who was the best female athlete at the Beijing Olympics", conducted by Sina.com and Titan Sports, put Guo top.
During the Chinese gold medalists' visit to Hong Kong last week, tickets for Guo's diving performances sold quickest, with people queuing a day in advance for a chance to see her in action.
In 2002, after winning both the 1m and 3m springboard titles at the World Cup, Guo joined male diver Tian Liang, as the face of Chinese beverage company "Aodeli".
At the Athens Olympics, Guo won two gold medals and was signed up by such famous brands as Red Earth, McDonald's, Toshiba, and Coca Cola. Her income from TV advertising alone rose from 600,000 yuan ($87,900) to 1 million yuan.
In 2005, Guo appeared for the first time on the Forbes list of Chinese celebrities, which gave her annual income as 10 million yuan.
In July's Chinese Celebrity in Sports list, Guo was the richest female athlete in China with an annual value of 15 million yuan, ranked third overall after NBA superstar Yao Ming and 110m hurdles icon Liu Xiang.
Her fortune should increase after the Games with some reports speculating her personal wealth will reach 100 million yuan.
This will be a bonus for Kenneth Fok Kai-kong, the grandson of the late tycoon Henry Fok, who is reportedly set to marry the diver.

Super Dan soaring
Badminton world No 1 Lin Dan is going to become another marketing phenomenon after he grabbed the men's singles gold medal, a sweet victory after his first-round exit four years ago in Athens.
Lin has long been a target of sponsors thanks to his glittering career, fashionable lifestyle and handsome image.
Even the Athens flop did not prevent companies from signing him up and the 2008 Forbes list of Chinese celebrities, released in March, ranked him 18th, with an annual income of 12.5 million.
Lin's major sponsors include Pepsi, Yili Group, Gatorade, FedEx and L'Oreal and each sponsor deal is from 1 million to 2 million.
With success in Beijing his career is prime time fodder and his love affair with women's world No 1 Xie Xingfang is adding to the excitement.
His annual wealth is expected to reach around 30 million for the coming year.
Even the shoes Lin wore during his final match at the Games could be worth a small fortune. A local newspaper reported they could be worth as much as 500,000 yuan.

Liu loses big
It's a different story for hurdler Liu, who will pay for his shock Olympic withdrawal before the first round of competition.
Officials from the sport's governing body insist Liu will be able to recover but there are doubts he will regain his status.
The negative effects of withdrawal and lack of exposure due to injury will likely decrease his value after many of his contracts with sponsors are set to expire next year.
The 25-year-old hurdler was formerly, with basketball hero Yao, one of the two most marketable sporting personalities in China.
Liu is believed to have earned over $20 million in endorsements last year alone, as companies such as Nike, Visa and Cadillac sought his help in building their brands in China.
Liu Xiang grimaces in pain as he settles into the starting block of his 110m hurdles heat of the athletics competition at the Beijing Olympic Games in this August 18, 2008

Based on results only, probably Wang Yihan.
Based on results and "marketability" probably Wang Lin.
Based on "marketability" alone, either Wang Shixian or Wang Lin.
But all three of them are still quite young, so let's take it as 'potential' instead.
