Yup. The Azizul guy beat 2004 gold medalist in June in a tourney. In today's news, Josiah Ng beat 2 OG champs to win the sprints. Of course, title wise, the younger Azizul has won more titles this year then Josiah - 2008 Asia Champ for Keirin & Sprints, hence he'll be the flag bearer. Cycling has a chance on medal, i.e. bronze, in individual event.

I saw that Asia country only Japan has won medal before in cycling. I didnt count Australia as Asia but Western

Archery, team event is a maybe only, since they got 2nd in 2008 World Champ. South Korea won it. Their coach is from South Korea, coach said wind conditions in China unpredictable, may affect the archery event since it's outdoors.

I just hope Josiah will not make the same mistake as in Athens 2004. He could at least have won a bronze medal that time.
But I don't want to put so much hope on winning golds (maybe a little), just want 2 enjoy all the games..:D:)

archery is more a competition against yourself. one of our archers had the jitters i guess and lost his concentration. italy showed a lot more mental strength. and our best chance in archery was the men's team event. for individual, there are others who are way better than our archers. but one managed a fifth place and who knows, he might surprise us with a medal. :)

Who can guarantee a definite win ? Even Leisel Jones failed in Athens when she was a clear favourite. But she worked at it and won gold finally this time.

Don't talk about archery -- it was only hype on that one. But cycling, our two Keirin sprinters have done well in recent form. TaeKwonDo women are strong (ok not guaranteed but at least better chance than archery).

Ah, badminton, think you are going bald on this. Please make sure you don't disappoint Nayuchi with a photo.

You are right, there are no guarantees in life. But true achievers through tangible hardwork and determination will deliver. Leisel Jones is a world champion swimmer with a couple of world records. She had her ups and downs but at the end of the day, she is a winner. As for us, our Malaysia Boleh is about empty razzmatazz and a whole bunch of hulabaloo with no tangible achievements to show at the end of the day. We talk the talk - rhetorics but when it comes to the walk, we come out short.

Yes, dont talk about archery, it is all hype. But thats what Malaysia Boleh is about. We are good in making the noise.

Cycling??? Trust me, our cyclists are gonna be found out in Beijing big time. Josiah Ng did all the high fives with Tyson Gay, Kobe Bryant etc but when the moment of truth comes, he will stumble. Cold feet or something.

Taekwondo?? We are decent la. Above average la. Ok ok la. Can cari makan la. But medal contenders?? Well, if its the Sukma or Sea games, I would say yes.

Badminton?? You said MAS will take 2 gold. I will gladly go bald if MAS win 1 gold. And yes, I will be more than happy to provide the pics. Question is, are you willing to eat that humble pie should MAS not bring home even 1 gold from badminton??????

Archery
In the 1st place, the hype surrounding archery was by the media, and not all media at that. They were barred from talking to the press in Beijing, the team manager answered questions, one of the reporters was concerned how they would handle the pressure on the day.
THis hype came about cos the archery team won silver in 2008 World Champs, it's World Champ, that means 2nd best in the world, behind South Korea. They could handle the pressure ok then(they got nervous but keep it together).

BUT the coach himself, from South Korea, had repeatedly said OG is different, and that the archers are 1st timers in OG, not that experienced.
The archers themselves down played their chances, they just wanted to give their best (who wouldnt)
They got nervous, I wasnt surprised cos they also got nervous in 2008 World Champs, the coach had to keep calming them down.
Anyway, all the best to them.

Cycling has been touted as 2nd in line in terms of getting OG medal. Josiah Ng has been in the 2004 Athens, he could handle it. He & his juniors are in good form, that's one of the reasons the track cyclist was chosen as flag bearer. But they themselves mainly said they focus on getting thru qualifying, then to final.

Taekwando is 4th in line for medal, one of the gals was runner up in 2008 Asia Champ. The chef de mission mentioned them 1st, then the media followed suit, before that nobody even thought of Taekwando. Aparently in martial arts, they dont have bronze play-off. 3rd & 4th place both get bronze. On paper, Taekwando doesnt have much chance, it's just hype.

Pemuda
08-13-2008, 09:06 AM
In the very first place, lets stay on subject and not go all over the place. So, leave the media aside.

Archery World Championship 2008??? :o I did some checking cos I am no archery fan nor expert. The last Archery World Championship was held in Leipzig, Germany in 2007. And I certainly didnt see our team finishing 2nd. Here's the site; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/44th_Outdoor_Archery_World_championship#Medallists
So, seriously please go check your facts.

Cycling ... and what did Josiah Ng achieved in Athens exactly?? And his juniors being in 'good form' can be touted as medal prospects?? :o Well, WCH, LWW/CTF were all in good spirits, best physical shape and form going to the Olympics too ... what happened to them??

TaeKwondo, we need to know that our athletes are average. And they are certainly not medal prospects in Beijing as this is the Olympics, not MSSM games or som inter bank jamboree.

IF squash is an olympic game, i think nicol david will have soo many competitors. not only the Grinham sisters, but the whole world, esp USA and China will be trying their best, gathering people around their nation to do the best in the game. u think we will have chance?
yes she will have competitors no doubt. But squash is already highly competitive and having it as an OG sport will raise its profile moreso than just the competition level. In other words, in the short term the status quo will likely remain the same. If they make it an OG sport in 2016 then maybe the bar will be raised higher but then the bar will be raised higher for all players so that point is moot.

Also just because a sport is in the OG doesn't mean China and US will dominate in it. Look at baddy in the US...there's been 5 OG's since badminton's entry in OG92 and they still haven't come close to getting a sniff at the badminton podium. And their best players are usually imports. Maybe if they offer US$3M to LCW and MK/HS each and citizenship papers , they might have a chance next OG :D. And some countries have resorted to that unfortunately.

And China traditionally relies on events like weightlifting, gymnastics, table tennis, diving, shooting events for their gold medal haul. Tennis for example has been around as an OG sport longer than badminton and one of the original 9 sports in Athens but I don't see China being medal worthy in the past or anytime soon.

Thank you very much hehehehehe...I am not boasting about the good of Indonesia first of all cos they might lose their medals....well I am not sure however....up to this day MAS has 0 medals so thats good for me.

U know guys there is only 1 way u can win a gold in Olympic.....Only if u return Batik to us and stop claiming it...if that happends MAS might win one or 2 gold here and there.....

Balikin BATIK!

I'm not trying to start an argument here but don't drag BATIK, POLITICS or whatever not related into the OLYMPICS ...MAS winning a medal has nothing to do with batik...If you really hate Malaysia you shouldn't be here.Try to be more logical and mature please.Btw, I'm seriously rooting for Indonesia in badminton XD, Flandy/Vita is my favourite pair:p

what do you mean return Batik?

What about the Sakura tree/plant/flower? AKA Cherry Blossom.
Its a national symbol of Japan (as the name suggests) but it is actually native to Japan, Taiwan, Korea(s) and China. So should the 4 other countries hope the worst for Kumiko Ogura and Reiko Shiota just because of that?

he he, Chu beat the OG record holder actually, South Korea guy, in R16. By 1 pt only. Cant imagine how he managed to upset the record holder, who just set a new record a few days earlier, ;)
Then Chu lost in QF to the Korean looking guy representing a European country.

But the hopes were only hype. The archery coach, from South Korea(the top country for archery) ,meticulous guy, very cool only, he wasnt angry with his charges though he's a taskmaster. The coach already said early2, our archers are young rookies, 1st timers at OG, inexperienced as compared to the opponents.
I only knew what he meant when I saw how "matured" looking some of the opponents were, Beijing for them is 4th OG. :D

They need to learn to keep cool consistently & one of these days do better than their silver/runner up in 2008 World Champs (sound a wee bit similar to... he he he). They're good for another 2 to 3 OG, dont think archery will be taken out of OG.

The thing I find funny about Malaysia Boleh and its hulabaloo is that before the Games, we will have the usual sabre rattling like badminton can win gold. Archery and cycling also got chance for medals. All the hype and jamborees.

But now with archery and cycling all pocit, we turned around and put the blame on the media, archers being young, cyclists no luck etc etc etc. All the usual sad stories la.

Aiyaaah no need to buy la. Just organise an 'Oympics' comprising Malaysia, Nepal, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Yemen, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos and Luxembourg. Then la we can show our Malaysia Boleh la.

Medal hopes hinge on Elaine, Chew Chan

MALAYSIA have one silver medal from Lee Chong Wei in the men's singles badminton but whether they can add more medals to their tally will very much depend on taekwondo exponents Elaine Teo and Che Chew Chan.
Of the five Malaysian athletes yet to see action, only Elaine and Chew Chan have realistic chances of winning medals.
Fifteen-year-old Pandelela Rinong, the youngest competitor in the women's diving competition, competes in the 10m platform preliminaries tonight. But the Sarawakian cannot expect to get on the podium.
She can only aim to get into the record books as the first Malaysian diver to make it to the top 18 semi-finals.
Walker Yuan Yufang, making her third Olympic appearance, will also set out to achieve a top 15 finish for the first time in the women’s 20km race tomorrow.
World Championships finalist Bryan Nickson is the other Malaysian yet to see action and he will go into competition in the men's 10m platform event on Friday.
Elaine will compete tomorrow in the women's below 57kg but it is Games debutant Chew Chan who has the better shot at putting on board another medal for Malaysia at the Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium on Saturday.
Chew Chan competes in the above 72kg category and has a more favourable draw than Elaine, who faces the big names from the start.
Chew Chan opens her campaign against Uzbekistan's Karimova Evegniya while Elaine has to contend with European champion Azize Tanrikulu of Turkey.

hehe, sori, golf is being considered for 2016 OG, it's one of the sports vying for the 2 spots. Others sports = , baseball, softball, roller sports, squash or karate . for Msia's sake, hopefully either squash or karate makes it.

By then, Nicol will be 33, haha, hopefully by then she'll have replacement.
Or Karate, Msia quite strong, 2007 Asia Champ.
