Who will win the 100 metres sprint? I'm looking forward to this one, along with a WR.
- Powell (JAM)
- Bolt (JAM)
- Gay (USA)
- Any others?

Definitely Powell!! Tyson Gay won't have a chance.. and for 400m, it's Wariner.. but i hope he won't beat M.Johnson's world record because M.Johnson is the best sprinter of all time!!:D:p

100m Is looking tight, I might go for Powell, although he is a strong sprinter he is certainly not the favourite. Gay is injured still so won't be fully fit. Bolt is the favourite, but is inconsistent.

110m Hurdles should be the best race - Xiang vs Roubles. Normally Roubles taking the world record would ease the pressure but in this case with home crowd and heavy expectation it will have put more pressure on LX. Hurdles requires a good rhythm and pressure can disturb this.

One certain gold medal will be won by Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva. She's broken the world record a staggering 23 times:eek::eek::eek:, most recently at Monaco in her last pre-Olympic event. Her record now stands at 5.04 m and no other woman is remotely close!

jamesd20
08-01-2008, 07:21 PM
Nothing is for certain, and a number of women have been close - 4.97-5.01m it only takes a couple of bad jumps for the pressure to tell.

In her case though I agree. In Athens she was on her last jump against feofanova(sp?) and jumped it, then clear the next jump first time and took the gold. She has never looked back since.

The pressure on Liu is tremendous. I honestly can't see him pulling it off. His injury has never really been righted and his form has deserted him at the wrong time. That said, I am still fully rooting for him.

If Bolt can get a half decent start (tough for a 6 ft 5 in giant), the race is over. In the Stockholm race (2 races ago I think), Bolt had a slow start; coupled with Powell's blast off the blocks, it left Bolt a lot to do but he closed dramatically in the last 30 metres and was just pipped at the line.

Like I said, if Bolt can get a half decent start....

Radcliffe intends to run in Olympic marathon

Aug 4, 7:17 am EDT
MACAU (AP)— Paula Radcliffe intends to run the marathon at the Beijing Olympics “unless my leg breaks down.”
The world record holder from Britain has been trying to overcome a stress fracture in her left thigh in time to compete in her fourth straight Olympics.
“I’m racing unless my leg breaks down,” said the 34-year-old Radcliffe, who joined her teammates at their training base in Macau on Monday.
“The aim has always been to start the race. Everyday I go out and plan to start the race,” Radcliffe added. “I’m getting more and more confident, because every day you run more on it and it gets stronger.”
Radcliffe dropped out of the marathon at the 2004 Athens Games, but she won the world championship title in the event a year later in Helsinki, Finland.
“I feel good. I feel happier even to be at this stage,” Radcliffe said. “I know from the stuff that I’ve done that I’m in good enough shape to be on the start line.”
In February, Radcliffe won the Laureus award for World Comeback of the Year for winning the New York Marathon after two years away from competition following childbirth.
She set the world record of 2 hours, 15 minutes, 25 seconds at the London Marathon in 2003. She also won the London race in 2002 and ‘05.
“I don’t know but I guess I’m probably not in 2:12 shape, but I think if you put yourself on the start line, you’re in with a chance,” Radcliffe said.

Yeah, the biggest upset for China as defending Olympic Champ withdrew from Men's 110m Hurdle event. Here's the article taken from official website of Beijing OG 2008 :

The world gasps as Liu walks away from Men's 110m Hurdles
Updated: 2008-08-18 13:36:50

(BEIJING, August 18) -- In the biggest upset of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games for host country China, world and Olympic champion Liu Xiang stumbled at the start of his qualifying heat in round one of the Men's 110m Hurdles on Monday morning. He later withdrew entirely from the event.

After Mohammed Issa Al-Thawadi of Qatar in lane three made a false start, Liu slipped off the blocks himself. When the athletes gathered at the start to get set a second time, Liu was conspicuously absent.

"A 110m Hurdles race without Liu is such a pity," Al-Thawadi said after the race. "I really wanted to be just next to Liu's lane because he's such a big champion. It's a great pity I lost an occasion to race with him. I hope he will come back soon."

At a press conference following the event, Liu's coach confirmed that the star's withdrawal was as a result of an injury to his right take-off foot, which has been affecting him for about six years. Liu reported on his own website Sunday that he was suffering from a sore Achilles tendon.

Liu's showdown with Dayron Robles, the Cuban who took away his world record earlier this summer, was one of the most eagerly-anticipated events of the Games.

During his warm-up, Liu grimaced as he attempted to stride over a set of two hurdles. He stepped onto the track with the other runners in his heat and warmed up in his start lane. In one practice run, he fell to his knees and held his leg.

After the false start, he attempted a run several times, but eventually shook his head, removed his race numbers and began to repeatedly kick a wall.
Liu took first place at the world championships in Osaka, Japan, last year with a time of 12.95 seconds, but has yet to break 13 seconds this year or even turn in a top 10 performance.

Robles overtook Liu's world record in April 2008 when he ran 12.87 at the Ostrava Grand Prix in Czech Republic. The Cuban just missed out on a medal at the 2007 World Championships when he finished fourth. So far in 2008, he has run 13.01s at the Shanghai Grand Prix and 13.20s at the Berlin Golden League meet.

Terrence Trammell of the United States was also disappointed after failing to finish his race due to an injury. He was looking to finally win a gold medal after earning four major silver medals in his career.

The 29 year-old took silver at the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympic Games. He has twice finished second at the World Championships, in 2003 in Paris, and 2007 in Osaka when he ran 12.99, the first time he went under 13 seconds in a major final.

In the same lane Liu was assigned to run in one heat later, Trammell fell dramatically after hurting his hamstring.
"He's a veteran in hurdles for the United States, and we're going to have to pick it up and make sure we represent the US," said David Payne, after seeing his teammate fail to finish his race.

David Oliver of the United States enters round two as the fastest qualifier, after running a time of 13.30 seconds, putting him ahead of Colombia's Paulo Villar in 13.87s and Ryan Brathwaite of Barbados, who ran 13.38s.

Robles moves on after running a relaxed 13.39s to win the first heat.
Round two will be held tomorrow night, August 19, at the National Stadium.

It ia slightly unjust to say he walked away from the race. He couldn't have raced anyway with that injury.

You have to ask questions about the standard of medical attention he has had - Apparently his injury has been ongoing for 6-7 years. Unless it is incurable something could have been done by now surely.

both US men and women team dropped their baton in the men 4x100m and women 4x100m relay respectively.

US is doing really crappy in tracks. i thought they would catch up with China on the Gold count with track and field but it looks like there is no way for US to catch up with China now.

The mens was laughable, the guy could see his hand, was looking at it, but just didn't put the baton their. 2nd OG in a row US team dropped baton. GBR defending champions dropped as well.

Looks like russia will catch GB too.

Is it true NBC changed the way they count medals (total medals rather than golds) so USA is top?

yeah. so now both sides are happy. the Chinese are counting golds so they think they win. the Americans are counting total so they too think they win.

I just watched the TV broadcast.

the women's team last leg, Lauryn Williams, who dropped the baton, ran back to pick it up and finish the race despite being seconds behind. that's admirable.

US team got disqualified in relays almost in every recent editions. According to the commentator, this was the back-to-back disqualification for Lauryn Williams (she exceeded the exchange area when Marian Jones ran the 3rd leg in 2004). FRA team also got disqualified.

Nightmares continued in US men's team, it was laughable because it was just one of the heats, why can't just run safe to reach the final? GBR team also got disqualified because their anchor leg has exceeded the exchange area. So disappointing! Lucky CHN got made it to the final thanks to the qualifications.

Nope, it was decided ahead of time that this year, the Olympics table would be decided by the number of medals won, not by the traditional gold count

Yes admirable.....I assume that in Relay you are allowed to step on the lines then? Or did they finish but get disqualified?

So they did change it then.

Bolt without a doubt for me. Three Gold Medals, Three world records, All in Blue Ribband events, beyond compare.

Having gone through a temporary change in location, I haven't got to post in a while.

I must say I am proud to be part of the 2.7 million people that produce people like Usian 'Lightning' Bolt, Veronica Campbell-Brown among many, many others.

Unfortunately all I got was NBC vidoes  which are all after the fact but at least I got to see the results in real time.

Without a doubt Bolt is Mr. Olympics! Looking forward to seeing how much he'll accomplish in the future.

Cheers!!

Still really, really puzzled as to how NBC could not bring ultra blue medal events like the 100m live:confused::confused:

Usain Bolt is the most successful sprinter who grabbed 3 golds after Carl Lewis era, a Jamaican power in track & field. Both Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps are the headlines of Beijing OG.
