Kevin Cordon (from Gautemala, of all places ) should be one of the finds of these Olympic Games :)

At Beijing 2008, he almost did to Bao Chunlai what Ronald Susilo did to Lin Dan in Athens 2004... except that Bao Chunlai seems to be a lot luckier.

In their 38-minute encounter in the Round of 32, Cordon surprised the Olympic MS 3rd seed with a very stubborn game. Yes, Bao Chunlai won the match... but not before being forced to concede as many as 33 points to a player relatively unknown beyond the Americas.

Final score: Bao Chunlai beat Kevin Cordon 21-17, 21-16 ;)
(For those who have seen this match, no explanation is needed.)

Cordon is just 21 years old (born on 28 Nov 1986), stands 5'11" (182cm) in his socks and is one of the best known athletes in Guatemala. He won the MS silver medal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badminton_at_the_2007_Pan_American_Games_-_Men%27s_Singles) at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His current world ranking is 54.

An awesome jump-smash, a very determined playing style and a solid defence are attributes that put this young man on a higher level than most of the non-Asian players. It could be that he has had extensive training elsewhere, perhaps in Indonesia or Malaysia (or in Denmark)

To his credit, Kevin Cordon didn't look the least bit intimidated by Bao Chunlai during the Beijing Games encounter. In fact, he made the long-limbed Chinese star work very very hard for the straight sets win.

Unless he decides to choose an alternative career, you can safely bet that we'll be seeing and hearing more of this talented Gautemalan in the time ahead :)

----------------
For trivia fans:

Kevin Cordon was Gautemala's flag-bearer at the Beijing Opening Ceremony. This is not the first time he has had this honour. He carried the national flag at the 2007 Pan American Games too.

Uh oh, somebody is in trouble!!!!!!
Oldhand was probably implying that because Gautemala is not that famous for badminton!!! & suddenly out of nowhere, we see a talented player from Guatemala. So thats probably why he 'expressed' that.

..his game is still pretty raw. He is talented, young and has a devastating and sharp jumpsmash. But a couple of things i (and a couple other BCers who watched his match vs. BCL) noticed about his game is that he still needs work on his defense and net/touch game. It happened also in this yr's U.S. Open too, when Andy Dabeka exposed those 2 areas, in their Semifinal match.
But i think, if Kevin keeps on improving, Guatemala will have a future star in the professional badminton circuit..

No problem :), but I was waiting for an answer from Oldhand.

As an interesting fact Kevin first sport was "fútbol" (soccer) and he began playing badminton just for fun because the gym was near his home.
He began training at the age of 10 but a badminton female trainer who was visiting guatemala told the badminton federation president that Kevin has no future in badminton, luckily his trainer Amilcar Castañeda in La Union Zacapa was no agree and ask for the national team trainer support and told him: "Look him play, and if you think he is not good, we don't pick him to the games". José María Solís, the national team trainer let Kevin play at the national championship and Kevin was national champion in his category minor 11 years old (José María was Kevin coach in Pekin 2008).

As he is 21 years old only, I am sure he is going to make history in Guatemalan sport and I hope in international sport too.

To go beyond where he is at now, he need to play against and practice against equal or better players

Yer you are right. As a matter of fact he won a two years scholarship in Germany where he has been living for one and a half year and trained by Per Henrick Croona (Sweden) and Ge Cheng (China) and has partners from Peru, Sweden,Canada, Czech Republic, Byelorussia, Ukraine, Estonia, Austria, Vietnam, Nigeria, Uganda, Austria, Lituania and Zambia. Kevin deserves all the support from National Badminton Federation and national and international institutions who sponsor him, Guatemala spends a lot of money in other popular sport (the one I am not going to talk about here) without succesful results but with Kevin's performance I think that is going to change, I hope.

Here's the text of the article:

BEIJING 2008 OLYMPIC GAMES
Strong cast from Saarbrucken in Beijing

8 August 2008

COACHES Ge Cheng, Per Henrik Croona and Kim Ji Hyun have every reason to smile and celebrate.

Thanks to the trio’s hard work at the Badminton World Federation world training centre in Saarbrucken, Germany, 16 players have qualified for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. And their efforts have not gone unappreciated by the players.

“We would like to express our gratitude towards our coaches – Ge Cheng, Per Henrik Croona and Kim Ji Hyun - who played vital roles in turning our dreams into a reality,” said Ukraine’s Larisa Griga on behalf of the players.
“They were constantly there for us 24 hours a day, supporting us and sacrificing so much to see us qualify for the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Needless to say it was tough training, much fun and an invaluable journey for all of us players.”

A total of 16 players qualified and they are Jeannine Cicognini (Sweden), Kristina Ludikova (Czech Republic), Olga Konon (Belarus), Larisa, Claudia Rivero (Peru), Simone Prutsch (Austria), Grace Daniel ((Nigeria) and Nhung Le Ngoc (Vietnam) in the women’s singles.

In the men’s singles, the players who qualified are Raul Must (Estonia), Kevin Cordon (Guatemala), Edwin Ekiring (Uganda), Eli Mambwe (Zambia), Stuart Gomez (Australia), Kestutis Navickas (Lithuania) and Yuhan Tan (Belarus).

However, the National Olympic Committees of Belgium and Austria did not include badminton in their contingent.

There were also other players who qualified for Beijing who benefited from short training stints in Saarbrucken. They are Petr Koukal, John Moody, Nguyen Tien Minh, Scott Evans, Anna Moura, Karen Foo Kune, Thilini Jayasinghe and Akville Stapusaityte.

The Road to Beijing programme started in June 2006 and focused on singles only with the target of qualifying as many players as possible to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

To make the programme more interesting, the training centre also organised, with the co-operation of Badminton Europe, a one week sparring and training camp for the European qualifiers in singles.

The coaches were full of praise for the training camp and were delighted with the opportunity to train and compete before the Olympics in a professional and systematic programme.

“It’s finally time to say good bye to the BWF training centre in Saarbrucken after 26 months. During this time, it was a wonderful experience to live with players from all over the world- to discover new cultures and make new friends,” added Larisa who is also captain of the women’s team.

“Our sincere thanks to our head coach, Ge Cheng (China), who taught us to train the ‘Chinese’ way. His distinctive skills and sense of humour which personally touched every player ensured that training sessions were more physically bearable and enjoyable.

“Additionally, he was the best cook in our private kitchen. For so much more than has been mentioned here, Ge Cheng, you are special to us and will remain in our hearts forever.”

Larisa also had a special word for Kim, whom she nicknamed ‘Kim Chi Power.’

“Her spirit and energy is truly amazing. No matter the time – 7am Monday morning or 7pm Sunday night – she constantly strives to push us further,” added Larisa.

“Always there to assist us, both on the court and off when necessary, Ji Hyun, you are a fantastic coach and a great friend. We will always remember you.”

The players also extended their gratitude to Croona who continuously challenged them to improve their performance,.

“We will never forget his outstanding training programmes, outside activities, hill sprints and various other fun games which never failed to make us competitive. He fully dedicated himself to the players and was willing to listen to and understand our problems, and we thank him for that.

“We would also like to wish all our coaches the very best in their future undertakings and efforts to develop badminton around the world. And not forgetting the wonderful support from the office that made sure each and every need of the players was taken care of.”

With one chapter concluded, Larisa and her ‘teammates’ are now preparing to embark on another. And come Saturday, it will be a new journey in Beijing.

It's great to note that, in particular, Olga and Kevin put up a great show at Beijing :)

At the 3rd set, during 23-23, it seems that several of Kevin points was due to its smart play. he sets the condition so to make easier for him to score a point or make Chen long did mistakes.

He sent Chen Long at right hand corner, and finish it with tight net shot...

An article by LA Times, written during the US Open this year...

http://articles.latimes.com/2011/jul/15/sports/la-sp-us-open-badminton-20110715

Badminton serves Kevin Cordon's mission

The sport helps the Guatemalan, who's competing in the U.S. Open Grand Prix event in Orange, in his Olympic quest.

July 15, 2011 (http://articles.latimes.com/2011/jul/15)|By Lisa Dillman, Los Angeles Times

Trying to become a Guatemalan futbol star, say, the next Carlos Ruiz (the former Galaxy striker), would have been the understandable path for a certain youngster bursting with athletic talent.
What, then, if the Olympic Games happened to be the ultimate destination?
The way Kevin Cordon looked at it: One made a lot more sense than 11. To reach the Olympics, playing soccer, he would need help and a lot of it. Ten other players, in addition to himself, of course.

There was another sport to potentially get him to the vaunted Olympic stage, having to rely solely on the man in the mirror. He picked badminton, a curious selection considering the pecking order of the sport in his native Guatemala.
"Why badminton? That's a good question," Cordon said. "One of my dreams was to qualify for the Olympics. So I couldn't do it if I played futbol because with futbol, it is very difficult. With the team, it's not easy. Badminton, I thought, was not [as] difficult. I'd have more chances to qualify."
There wasn't anyone in his family with stray Yonex rackets sprawled around the house to pave the way.
"No one. Nobody," he said. "I live very far from Guatemala City, five hours by car. That's interesting because as I tell you before, nobody [really] played."
Cordon was talking after his third-round singles match this week at the Yonex/OCBC U.S. Open Grand Prix event at the Orange County Badminton Club in Orange. He took his first two matches in straight sets and defeated Dieter Domke of Germany in three sets. In Thursday night's quarterfinals, Cordon was to face Hsuan Yi Hsueh of Taiwan.
The tournament is one of a series of qualifiers for the 2012 London Olympics, but Cordon said he'd already qualified for that event. He qualified for the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and was the flag carrier at the opening ceremony for his country's 12-member contingent.
"It was one of the best experiences of my life," he said.
The 24-year-old has had to take his talent far away from Guatemala to improve. Cordon had been at the national training center in Madrid since March and will be based there until October, leaving shortly before the Pan American Games in Mexico.
This has led to his educating a lot of his badminton colleagues about his native country.
"That's the first question they ask me: Where Guatemala is? I just say it is next to Mexico or something like that," Cordon said. "That's really good because now people know where Guatemala is."
There weren't exactly a lot of national predecessors on the badminton circuit, to be sure.
Kenneth Erichsen played in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics for Guatemala, and Pedro Yang represented Guatemala in Athens in 2004. Yang happens to be a member of the IOC Athletes Commission and is still active in badminton, losing in the first round of singles and doubles at the U.S. Open in Orange.
The U.S. Open is something of a sneak preview for the Olympics with about 350 of sport's elite on hand for this event running through Sunday. The skill, finesse and power, all in a confined space, are fairly overwhelming and that helped attract Cordon to the sport.

"Badminton looks easy," Cordon said. "The sport looks easy. You have to have power, instruction, good technique. You have to be smart. It's not, for example, just running and running."

KC knows that his previous WC entry had ended early in the hands of Datuk LCW and since KC has already progress this far beyond anyone expectation, he will definetly give our Datuk LCW a match of his life if he's the one who will be going out in today 2011 WC QF match.

To KC, eventhough he has all the package to become a next visible threat from a non asia countries, If he and his coach watched Datuk LCW near perfect performance against PSH, its requires a more huge improvements in all aspects of his gameplay, better than what he did against CL if he's to beat Datuk LCW.

If KC can reduced from making any unforced errors, remain solid in his defence and being more dominant in the front court, his match with Datuk LCW will indeed be an interesting encounter and certainly a highlight for today matches.

The match was finally played.

Lee Chong Wei [1] defeated Kevin Cordon 21-07, 21-13 in 24 minutes.

Not to be disappointed; For Kevin has done well, reaching the Quarter-Finals at this 2011 World Championships.

Well Done Kevin Cordon !!! :):):)

Kevin couldn't really stand up to LCW though, I saw that match at Wembley last Friday (live, my first ever time watching pro badders and in Wembley) and I was almost embarassed for Kevin at the mistakes he was making and not recovering from shots/predicting opponent shots near quite well enough to compete on even terms. Seems like he did well to get that far but LCW was on the way through.

he played at 8pm the night before for 80 minutes. Whereas LCW played for 30 mind at 12pm the day before. So really there was not much recovery time for Kevin. Mistakes due to fatique are likely to come in as a result.

Stage fright. He knew all eyes were on him by now... :D
He's a very good player; huge potential; a great asset to the game right now, when it was threatening to stagnate a bit...

...
..eerily almost the identical score lines as well:
Yonex BWF World Championships 2011 - 21-7, 21-13
YONEX BWF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010 - 21-7, 21-11

He's the man to watch out for China team currently..:D
..he's to watch out for, for team CHN, really??..incl. LD, CJ?..or you meant for Chen Long and the younger CHN MS players?..

Kevin's current BWF ranking is 28. I hope to see him go more regularly into the quarter and semi finals stages of SS tournaments that he participates in. He needs to stitch together a good run of tournaments to boost his confidence level in the run-up to the OG. It would be great to se him shine there. And anywhere else, as well! :D

the problem with this guy is he is not that consistent...he can peak at big tournaments (OG, WC) and beat some good players and then end up losing to inferior players in small tournaments

Where is KC these days? Dont see him participating in any superseries event after the world championship event.

Don't think we well see him much, probably no govt funding/support to fly/play in Opens, how he pay for coaching? via donation, sponsorships in Guatemala, soccer players have better luck there..OLY12 may be out, too bad.

He won the game against Chen Long in the first round of WC, but otherwise I'm not aware if he's ever peaked in any big tournaments or beaten any top players.

He will be at the OG12, continental representation pretty much guarantees him a spot even of he was #60 in the world...
