There are 2 coaching VCD's on the market. It teaches the basic skills, in Madrin though. I learned a trick or two from them, but my friends found them useless.

does anyone knows the maximum play time of a VCD? I'm thinking of dumping tapes into VCD.

Depends on the quality.
You can get around an hour or less on VCD but images aren't great.
(Kwun, what do u think?)
Waiting for a recordable DVD seems a better option but the prices need to come down more.
Check out www.apple.com on their latest G4 computers.

cheung, they r coming out with ML cd very soon, with 2x to 3x of current cd capacity. DVD cant seem to get its act together.

The capacity is still not big enough to get good quality pics.
5 minutes of footage on miniDV will use up approx 1Gb of memory.

cheung, i'm not a keener in video compression. The 5 minutes miniDV footage = ~ 1GB but that's for high quality audio video stuffs. I'm thinking of transferring my old tapes onto vcds. Since VHS tape images are poor quality as compare to dvd, could i compress VHS source data stream and pack more into a vcd?

Cooler,
Yes. You can compress VHS into VCD but the quality will certainly be poorer. And it is going to make a difference because badminton has a tiny shuttle that moves really fast across the screen.
When talking about DV footage, the implication is not that it will improve the quality of image. Recording onto DV will not degrade the image further.
Compression of VHS image takes a surprisingly long time in spite of modern chip developments. I guess you have many hours of footage (probably double or triple what I have). It would take at least a few months to get everything onto VCD and I'm not sure it's worth it with the resultant quality images.
That's why I believe DVD is the better option.

cheung, thanks.
I agreed that vcd is only an interim digital storage medium until a better one come along. Sony and panasonic better hurry up with their recordable dvd. I read that a prototype optical magneto disk can hold 1 gb per layer. The disk is colorless.

Then 12 layers will give 1 hour of recording.

A short mpeg file i downloaded from badminton-interactive which i play from my HD. The image is similar to vcd quality and it only use up 9.32 MB/minute. So on a typical cd-r, it should hold 69 to 75 minutues of video. Of course, it's not dvd quality with THX, but playing from a cd will eliminate video degradation. Old tapes degrades with time.

It depends how much degradation of quality you are prepared to accept during the transfer process.
My old video tapes are not too bad at the moment (stored in cool temperatures in a garage) but they will need to be transferred to a longer lasting medium at some point.

ok, this will solve my problem.
**Over the past decade, we occasionally heard reports on holographic storage that had the potential to revolutionize the storage industry with its huge capacities and fast retrieval rates. Storage using the third dimension of depth allows more data to be packed into a given area while retrieval in two dimensions allows data to be read faster. How much larger? How much faster? One estimate places the capacity of a 5 sq. inch plastic wafer at about 80x that of DVD... not bad. Transfer rates start about 25 times that of standard DVD rates... 25 MB/sec. Compared to optical media, its swift. Compared to hard drives... eh. However, Lucent's development arm, InPhase Technologies, appears to be positioning the technology more against DVDs than traditional winchester drives.**

Good news. I need to archive my tapes. They are taking up lots of space.

DVD is the best standard that is accessible to the mass market at present.

agreed, if only they could mass market dvd.
cheung, r u into audio? dvd vs SACD is a hot debate in the audiophile world.

yes, the days of affordable dvd is nearing. However, too many standards, at least 3 different formats coming soon.
