Does the Olympics Games result count for world ranking points? Anybody knows how much it counts and Maria (and Zhang Ning) ranks next Thursday?
Big thanks

Yup, it follows World Championship ranking pts. Ranking pts from last years World Championships will be superseeded.

Thank you, abedeng...
Does it mean 4.800 points Maria got from round 16 in WC'07 will be deleted, and 8.400 points will be granted as a bronze medallist in OG'08? It will gives her 3.600 added points for 35.223 points she had now, right?
I'm still novice on this...:D

Dear moderators,
now that OG is over, woudn't it be better if this thread moved to the Professional Players forum?
meanwhile, here is an article about Maria from The Jakarta Post.

Maria Kristin Yulianti: New face in women's badminton Primastuti Handayani, The Jakarta Post, Beijing
She walks slowly onto the court with a blank face. When the match begins, she looks like she will not chase after the shuttlecock. Please welcome "Queen of three games" Maria Kristin Yulianti of Indonesia!
At the age of 23 (a little older than your average Asian shuttler) Maria earned a bronze medal in the women's singles badminton competition at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
This was an achievement in itself since none of Indonesia's entrants in the same event four years ago (in Athens) were able to qualify.
"The result surpassed my personal target of making it to the quarterfinals. Of course I am happy," said Maria who is currently ranked 21 in the world.
Top seeds may ask how she did it. Maria not only upset Danish sixth seed Tine Rasmussen in the 16th round, but also blocked the Chinese from making a clean sweep of the medals by defeating third seed Lu Lan 11-21, 21-13, 21-15.
Born in the coastal town of Tuban, East Java, Maria began practicing badminton at the age of 10 in her hometown, before joining the Djarum club in 1998.
Djarum (based in Kudus, Central Java) is one of the biggest badminton clubs in Indonesia, however Maria was not happy there.
"I hated badminton back then. The reason why I joined the club was because my father forced me to, but if it was up to me I would have chosen volleyball."
Maria's father, Yuli Purnomo, loves Badminton and still coaches children in the neighborhood. But neither of her siblings -- Krisnathan Yulianto and Magda Thalia Yulianti -- took to the sport.
It took Maria eight years of intensive training at the Djarum club before she grabbed her first title at the Surabaya Satellite.
"I realized badminton was my life. I preferred badminton to study, so I had to dedicate myself to it," she said.
The year 2005 was a turning point in Maria's sporting career. She and the other national female shuttlers -- who for the first time in history failed to qualify for the Uber Cup women's team championship -- were given an ultimatum by the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) to improve their form or leave the national training center.
The PBSI called in the 2000 Sydney Olympics silver medalist and 2001 world champion, Hendrawan, to coach the female shuttlers.
At that time, Hendrawan said he could get them medals at the 2008 Olympics -- and he kept his promise.
"This victory is for Hendrawan. He was the one who got me this far. I didn't expect this to happen. Hendrawan not only taught me badminton, but he taught me how to deal with life," said Maria (who is now coached by Hendrawan's former assistant, Marlev Mainaky) after the bronze medal playoff match.
Hendrawan not only trained the girls in badminton technique, but also boosted their motivation in off-court matters.
"He's democratic. He allowed us to argue and have discussions and he has a good sense of humor. Hendrawan often gave us guidance and evaluated our performance -- especially at major events," Maria added.
Hendrawan and Marlev have different play techniques, Maria said. "While Hendrawan is good in long rallies and lobs, Marlev prefers drives and fast rallies."
The loyal reader of Detective Conan (manga) is now ready to take on more responsibility.
"We have proven we can improve. PBSI should not discriminate against us with the male players," she said.
Even 1992 Barcelona Olympics gold medalist Susy Susanti praised Maria's achievement.
"Women's singles players need more opportunities to prove they can follow in Maria's footsteps. We need new talents to support her," Susy said.
When asked if she was ready to be the next Susy, Maria answered, "Susy has everything."
"I still have a lot to learn to become like her."
But with her recent win, Maria's name will never be the same.

Her play will be carefully studied & analyzed by the Chinese coaches from now on since OG08, she becomes a major threat to the Chinese superiority in WS. Will she replace ZN as either #1 or #2 at the world ranking list?

We certainly hope so. She will be in the top 16 by end of this week (when the ranking table is out). Players like Zhang Ning, Xie Xingfang, Xu Huaiwen, Wang Chen, Pi Hongyan, and Tine Rasmussen have either expressed their wish to retire or will be retiring soon. So, Maria Kristin surely can break into the top 10 pretty soon.
The new top 10 will be filled with players like: Lu Lan, Zhu Lin, Wong Mew Choo, Zhou Mi, Yip Pui Yin, Jun Jae Youn, Saina Nehwal, and Maria Kristin :)

OMG, you're right! If those 27+ year-old players all retire, then Maria could be a top player! ...vacancy[/I]... :p] But seriously, [B]Wang Yihan is a very good talent and a future top player... Wang Lin... er what happened to her?!? Lost focus or something... puberty problems maybe...?
i think it's too fast too judge her as cengeng or fragile..
it just sucks too lose when u are so close to win
and it's hard to accept even when you try to.. ;)
There is a possibility that Maria will cry too if she is the #2 ranked player on Earth and then loose the Bronze medal game to the #21 player from China at that time... :p

Yes it was from one of the posting recently. I just feel strange how come there is none whatsoever of Maria Kristin thread even after she won the bronze medal at this Olympic. Maybe we should use this thread to compile more info on her, more pictures, profiles, achievements, personal life etc as long as any info pertinent to her and badminton career. It will definitely be an inspiration. After watching her sudden surge of fame in this Olympics, my daughter who is a hard core fan of hers demanding me to send her to Djarum to get trained.....she has been looking at the PB Djarum website and felt in love with the school and its facilities. I hooe this is not "panas panas tahi ayam" phenomena. You know what i mean !

Maria Kristin is Indonesia's 2008 Olympic real hero!!!
not MKido/HSetiawan ;) i love them for winning us a gold medal. but they are expected too, they're ranked #1, seeded #1.
but Maria play well above expectation. winning bronze??? that's crazy, but not as crazy as beating Lu Lan, even dominating the second & third sets. proving that she's an adept tactical player. her tactic was not to give lob shots and press toward the body or Lu's left/backhand side.
hopefully with more physical training and international exposure, she can achieve more. (but i still fancy Firdasari over her actually ;)

Kudus - Cuaca panas berawan menyelimuti GOR bulutangkis Djarum, Jati, Kudus. Tak mau ketinggalan puluhan pebulutangkis junior binaan PB Djarum ikut menyambut pahlawan bulutangkis.
Maria meraih medali perunggu setelah mengalahkan Lu Lan.

Key news points [in English]:
Maria Kristin receives 150 million Rupiah from her club, PB. Djarum. Maria was on a one day vacation to visit her younger clubmates and former coaches [from when she was trained in Kudus, as a young child]. She was greeted as a badminton hero by all the current trainees with a parade of rackets, flowers, and chants of the PB. Djarum badminton-mars-song. "I didn't expect to be greeted like this. Actually, my intention in coming here is just to spend holiday and to meet my fellow younger clubmates." :)
From other newspaper articles I read in Indonesia, they said Maria cried a lot that day because she felt very honored by the welcome-reception in Kudus. She said that in 2008 she improved her big weakness in the past: her footwork. With stronger and faster legs, all her other gamesmanship became more lethal and effective.

As for those who didn't get any medals... well, INA have long rejected the Communist ideals [of giving loosers rewards]...
Thus, we should keep embracing the idea that rewards are for the high-performers. Bigger rewards are for the very-high-performers... ;) The so-so participants, [however hard they've tried] should not be financially rewarded. Rewarding non-performers is not a good practice. They should just get pep-talks on how to do better in the future.

Just the info about Maria & INA WS
Since a lot of changing of Pelatnas WS coaches, made INA WS got big trouble.
Maria and INA WS was coached by Verawaty in 2002 - 2003
her debut in Sudirman Cup 2003
Together with Jo Novita/Lita Nurlita She saved INA's team from the bottom of group, beat England 3-2 after XD lost and shocked MD (Chandra/Sigit) lost too.
In SF she met world #1 Zhou Mi, while she was world #180s and lost 8-11, 8-11
2003, reshuffled in PBSI
WS coached by Ivana Lie & Sandiarto in 2003 - 2004
The 1st layer players was kicked off, Yuli Marfuah, Atu Rosalina & Dian Novita Sari. They are all short under 160 cm height tall, sometime they called "Trio Kwek Kwek"
The WS squad keep only, Silvi Antarini, Maria Kristin, Adrianti Firdasari, Fransisca, Siti Mahiroh & Fitria Firdaus. The other youngsters also kicked out too from Pelatnas although they stayed less than 1 year in Pelatnas.
A good performance in ABC 2003
Silvi as runner up, lost to Wang Chen, she beat Jun Jae Yun in SF
Maria & Fansiska lost to Wang Chen & Dai Yun in QF
Firda lost to Jun J.Y. in R-16
UC 2004, INA got QF by beat Germany 3-0 but lost to Korea 0-3 in QF.
2004, reshuffled again in PBSI
Pelatnas Management under Icuk Sugiarto's era
Ivana Lie, Agus Dwi Santoso was kicked out from Pelatnas
Hendrawan & Sandiarto as WS coach
Joko Suprianto in as MS coach
2006 (or 2007, I didn't remember)
Joko Suprianto retired as Pelatnas MS coach
Hendrawan was moved to be MS coach
Sandiarto still as WS coach but he retired too.
WS coach was empty after Marleve Mainaki took over this position.

In SF she met world #1 Zhou Mi, while she was world #180s and lost 8-11, 8-11
In INA Open 2008, Maria finally avenged her defeat by Zhou Mi in 2003... :p

Yup, maria kristin is a hero! Nobody expect her to get medal in OG, but she did it. She never give up in every match, even though her opposite have a high rank than her in BWF rank..
Thats a good lesson to other INA shuttlers, they must have a great attitude like Maria Kristin
saved from match point of Juliane Schenk di 1st round..
beat favorit winner aNd 3 super series include All England this year,Tine Rasmussen..
show to the world, who is the real 'rising star'..she beat Saina Nehwal...
Be the one and only unseeded player and non-China player in big four..
and, failed clean sweep China women single. she got bronze medal and beat China's most promising star,Lu Lan.
the real hero!!!

I already saw that Maria was too tired after the Olympics... She had to go to so many non-badminton functions... She is considered a sports-hero and thus a semi-celebrity in INA now... :p Many [powerful] people invited her to this-that event... and hard to refuse them... :p I heard that after KKK-TBH's 2007 All England win, many political leaders used them for campaigns etc. too... :p

I'm just concern about her nagging knee injury, and according to Maria's statement in INA newspaper she said she wont get knee surgery because she's afraid that she cant play as well as before the surgery ... well something like that, but i think that the longer she let it untreated it will cause her much bigger problem in the future.

i had high hopes when she won the first set. but after losing the second set i just knew she would lose. i told my roommate - we were just looking at the scores on the net - and he didn't believe me ;) i hate to say told you so.
but still, people should keep an eye on her. several more 5 star competitions and she'll be up there with the others. eventhough not in ranking, but in reputation.
too bad she couldn't finish off Lu Lan today. if it happened, she will be Lu Lan's nightmare for sometime.
if you get beaten by somebody several times straight, it somehow sticks in your head everytime you meet again on the court. its a mental state, and i believe its one of the most important thing on professional level, because skills are not that different between players. but i do have to give credit to Chinese and Western players for having great mentality, above average i should say.

Maria's style is too slow compared to chinese players. She must do more smashes, instead of cross drop to get more points. I saw she playing in uber cup 2008 in istora senayan, Most of the audience shouted "smash, smash" but she didn't do it, she just did dropshot. So she lost to eriko hirose & xu huai wen.

Let me get this straight... you are saying that Maria Kristin is the reason we couldn't grab the Uber Cup this year?
The fact that China had Xie Xinfang, Zhu Lin, Lu Lan all in the top 5 world ranking and then the #1 to #4 Women's Doubles had nothing to do with China winning the Uber Cup? While on the other hand, Maria Kristin, being ranked #21 in the world at that time was the highest ranked player INA could offer... plus Firda-Pia-Nana who were all ranked 35 or worse ...plus our best WD couldn't win against the Chinese either... It was due to Maria's fault?
I think almost all the fans know that Maria is quiet, composed, and does not appear dynamic on-and-off the court... :p Yes she is not a 'leader' type... But was she a destructive force in the team? Never! But for you to say that our Uber Cup team didn't win the cup because of Maria is not right! We just lost to a VERY good China team. That's all! ;) No shame in that!

Maria lost again to LL....i guess maria wasn't too patient and concentrate esp in set 1 and 3.....well she should learn from that if she wants to beat yet chn plyr whose seem have similar type to LL....better next time in France against Zhu Lin....even Petya Nedelcheva could strech ZL into the limit here last night........best of luck......

after OG Maria lost twice in SS from Lu Lan consecutively....
Even though she lost in rubber, but when they meet again and Maria lost again, it will make her confidence drop.......
I wish Maria not facing Lu Lan again in the nearest tourney....

Three INA WS players have bad drawing in French SS, they must face tough test so early. Reigning World Champion Zhu Lin is trying to fix her below par performance recently, Maria Kristin should overcome this stumbling block, then likely Yu Hirayama will become her opponent and on paper scenario she will take on Lu Lan at quarterfinal.

That's a bit harsh. Compared to the beginning of this year, who would have thought Maria would snatch the OG Bronze? Most people would write her off against any of the Chinese WS top 4, yet she has beaten 3 of them this year (XXF is the last remaining one). She beaten Zhu Lin in straight set to avenge her rubber set loss in INA open, and all her losses to Lu Lan have been through tightly contested rubber game.
I said it before, the skillset is there, she just need to execute it.
