Lin Dan awaits Lee Chong Wei in Changzhou
By K.M. Boopathy

World No 1 Lee Chong Wei and Olympic champion Lin Dan's rivalry will resume in the China Masters in Changzhou on Sept 23-28. Troubled pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong will also be desperate to revive their career.

Chong Wei, the top seed, has a few tricky early matches against China's lesser known players, and providing he advances, is in line for an intriguing title showdown against Lin Dan.

Lu Yi will be Chong Wei's first round opponent before the Malaysian comes up against China's junior shuttler Zhou Wenlong.

However, Chong Wei is not expected to stumble against either one or against most probable quarter-final opponent Joachim Persson of Denmark.

But Chong Wei's semi-final encounter will be a crucial test as he will most probably face China's Olympics bronze medallist Chen Jin.

Should Chong Wei play Lin Dan in the final, it will be their fourth meeting this year with the latter securing a convincing victory in their last match-up when winning gold at the Beijing Olympics.

Hafiz Hashim is the other Malaysian competing in the men's singles but faces a tough early match against Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat in the first round.

Third seeds Kien Keat-Boon Heong, who received a bye in their opening match, have a tricky second round against China's Sun Junjie-Xu Chen before a possible showdown with either compatriots Razif Latif-Tan Wee Kiong or Indonesia's Rian Sukmawan-Yonathan Dasuki in the last eight.

Survival will pit them against China's second seeds Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng and a win will be a massive boost for Kien Keat-Boon Heong who have yet to reach a final this year.

Zakry Latif-Fairuzizuan Tazari, the fourth seeds, will also be looking forward to a place in the semi-finals.

They received a first-round bye, but will face Indonesian pair Hendra Gunawan-Joko Riyadi in the second round are expected to meet compatriots Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng or Khoo Chung Chiat-Tan Bin Shen, in the last eight.

The semi-final will be tough as the winners will find Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia or China's Guo Zhendong-Xie Zhongbo awaiting them.

In the women's singles, fourth seed Wong Mew Choo has a potentially dangerous second round match against world junior champion Wang Lin.

Women's doubles Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui can consider themselves lucky to gain direct entry into the quarter-finals after receiving a first-round bye.

They play China's Pan Pan-Tian Qing and a win will pit them against Olympic champions Du Jing-Yu Yang of China.

If LD has withdrawn from the 2008 China Masters SS, then a new draw should be forthcoming.

It should also mean that BCL and CJ will be moved to the bottom half of the draw, and SDK to the top half

Assuming that the top 4 seeds were to reach the Semi-Finals, then we would have these 2 interesting matches:

BCL vs CJ

Olympic is over and I do not think LYB will fix the match.....
It is better for LD to withdraw if he thinks he is not ready...plus he did a lot of tour after winning Olympic........
I hoped that our TH did same thing and gave the olympic spot to Simon instead as we all knew that TH was not ready at all.....

This just goes to show that ever since Lin Dan won OG08, he doesn't even care about his world ranking any more... skipping the next 3-4 tournaments...wow:eek:

If I were Lin Dan, I would retire right after OG08 just for the best possible reputation and fame, instead of staying in play for the money earned from sponsors and etc.

Just look at Taufik these days... he is no longer being remembered as the top player he once was before any more.:crying:

In the far ahead future, only 2 types of players today will be forever remembered... The 1st type is the very best player, eg. Lin Dan, Yang Yang, Zhao JW, and etc:cool:. or the next type is the very very bad players, eg. Mr. YoYo Hafiz Hashim..LOL;)

Don't think it's as simple as that.

XXF is World No.1 and she didn't win the OG08 Gold, but yet she is not playing. Some are saying that LD is not playing because of XXF. :) But for Team CHN, LYB is the decision maker.

However, many Badminton fans around the world are disappointed that their idols, LD and XXF, will not be participating.

Even LCW said that he has flashback of OG08 just because of how fast Lin Dan was, and that LCW had no chance of even playing his normal game... and now you have a different opinion from LCW himself.

.

Another reason can be that in order for some of the China Junior players to participate in SS events, there has to be enough room available... so by having the top players giving up their spots, then the lower ranking Chinese Juniors then have a chance to participate.

By the way, players play to win and play for their own reasons, not really to please their fans.

Badminton: Chong Wei holds advantage to book world championships spot
By RAJES PAUL
KUALA LUMPUR: National number one Lee Chong Wei has a head start as far as qualification for next year’s World Badminton Champion-ships is concerned.

And he intends to keep the momentum going when he takes part in three back-to-back Open tournaments — Japan Open (Sept 16-21), China Masters (Sept 23-28) and Macau Open (Sept 30-Oct 5).

Chong Wei has set his sights on winning honours in the world championships, which will be held in India from Aug 10-16.

The 52-week qualifying period ends in May and the top 16 in the ranking are assured of places in the championships.

Chong Wei harboured hopes of becoming the first Malaysian world champion last year but he was beaten by Indonesian Sony Dwi Kuncoro in the third round at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

In the first tournament that offered qualifying points for the world championships, the Beijing Olympics last month, Chong Wei emerged as runner-up to China’s Lin Dan.

He moved up one rung to number one in the ranking and will be out to retain the Japan Open title.

“In order to remain at the top, I have to win the Japan Open title,” said Chong Wei after a training session at Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara yesterday.

“The qualifying period for the world championships has already begun. I want to do well in all the tournaments so that I can maintain my number one status for a long time.

“China and South Korea are not sending their best players to Tokyo. But I expect tough challenges from Indonesia and Denmark, who will have their best players there.”

Top seeded Chong Wei has in his half of the draw three Indonesians — fourth seed Taufik Hidayat, Simon Santoso and Tommy Sugiarto — and two Danes, Joachim Persson and Jan O. Jorgensen.

The other half of the draw has second seed Sony, three Chinese players — Chen Yu, Gong Weijie, Li Yu – and Dane Peter Gade-Christensen.

Chong Wei added that he was recovering from a bout of fever.

“I was down with fever on Friday but I had two days of good rest. I just slept in. But I will not let this affect my plan to do well in Japan,” he said.

Until a week ago, he had been busy attending numerous functions since winning the silver medal in the Beijing Olympics.

“I still think about the defeat by Lin Dan. He was so fast that I could not play my normal game,” he added.

“It hurts just thinking about the match. I even felt numb during the medal ceremony.”

i think LD is just being nice..since he was #1 for so long, and then to brutally destroy LCW's mental game and gold medal, he's gunna relax with XXF for a bit, and let LCW enjoy being #1 for a bit. then he can make sure XXF doesn't retire, so they can retire together to "golden couple" in 2012 ;)! ...well and to take back his #1 =]

u guys are beyond funny, more like chee seen silly.
LD has won all the key titles already.
On china Masters/Open, he won it in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007. LD does not need to prove himself in this regard anymore. Rather, he will let BCL, chen jin, chen yu AND 9 other chinese MS players a chance of glory. For the lcw fans, u should pray that silver medalist lcw doesn't get beaten by one of these 12 chinese MS players.

Regarding pjswift's theory that LD's devious plan of not playing japan open so that he can conserve energy to beat LCW, LOL. Theory busted. Too much rest actually slowed him down.

I don't see XXF being able to play again since ZN has retired.ZN has all along played escort to XXF like CJ,BCL, CY and CH for LD.If XXF continues to play, who's gonna prop her up? LL, ZL,etc? These CHN WS can't even take care of themselves.
It's a pity that LD plans to take such a long rest but he deserves to,after playing the match of his life.(And I'm glad because he can now sleep well because he does not need to prove anything anymore, not even AG)
Yes, he needed to get into 6th gear(OG08) to demolish LCW who will just need to get into 5th gear to do the same (TC08)It's great that LCW has been instrumental in gearing LD up to his highest level.Let's hope LD shows even more greatness in NOV in front of his home crowd.

If the words "hurt just thinking about" and "felt numb" doesn't imply the feeling of LCW is "afraid" of LD(unless you expect a pro to say directly " I am afraid of LD"), while you people believe that "skipping 4-5 tournaments" mena Lin Dan is afraid of LCW... then all I have got to say to is "WELCOME TO A LIFE OF DENIAL"

As usual, LCW is refreshingly (or foolishly) candid. It just meant he underestimated LD and paid a high price for it.The good thing for LCW fans is LCW will most probably play on till 2012.

See how Noridayu, one of LCW's strongest supporters, does it... just providing a firm and strong support.

I too believe that LCW can revenge his defeat against LD, the match played at OG2008.

It's not as though LCW has never beaten LD before. In fact, if my memory is correct, LCW has beaten LD at least 3 times before.

We hope that LD will allow LCW to play a Return Match ASAP. And we hope that LI De Quan is correct; that their Return Match would be at the 2008 China Open in Shanghai, November 18-23.

Lee Chong Wei to skip 2008 China Masters

KUALA LUMPUR: National coach Misbun Sidek has given shuttler Lee Chong Wei the green light to skip next week’s China Masters in Guangzhou.

World No. 1 Chong Wei confirmed this after reaching the final of the Japan Open in Tokyo yesterday following a 21-6, 21-4 demolition of Dane Joachim Persson in the semi-final.

Chong Wei said he was skipping the eighth-leg of the Super Series in China because of a slight pain on his right hand.

The Malaysian had been seeded top ahead of Lin Dan of China for the tournament.

“It is nothing serious. It is probably due to heavy smashing. I need a rest. The coach also does not want me to aggravate any injuries,” said Chong Wei in a telephone interview yesterday.

“I will return home after the Japan Open. I have also been entered for the Macau Open (after the China Masters) but I am not sure if I will play. I will let my coach decide.”
