have any of u guys played or heard of any badminton video games on any consoles?
No, personally I think sports games on consoles or the PC are pointless. Why have fun with the sport sitting in a chair, when you could be enjoying it and getting exercise? Kinda like sports buffs who memorize every fact on a sport but have yet to play it.

phil, think of it this way:
when we play for hours upon hours on the court, we eventually get tired and need rest.
during our time of rest, we can comprimise and play badminton on a console cant we? ^_^ thats the way i think of it!
24/7 badminton BWAHAHAHAHA.
my friend said there was one for PS2, except there is only a japanese version of it so far.

Hey guys, has anyone played or been playing the badminton game for the NES? (yes it's VERY old, but it's the only badminton game i've found..)
if you have, how on earth do you hit a drop shot or a net shot?
and if you haven't, YOU CALL YOURSELF A FANATIC?!?! j/k : )
where can we find the game? can we play it in the NES simulator??
DontAskMeWhy
06-18-2002, 01:06 AM
... you can find NES roms in a few places:
-IRC
-newsgroups (alt.emulator.*)
... certain websites that may or may not be inundated with pop-up ads.
I wish some company would take a chance .. imagine IBF Badminton 2002 by Electronic Arts...
DontAskMeWhy

..i forgot to mention you'll need to download an NES emulator for your PC -- either MAME or NESticle ... MAME supports different platforms, and NESitcle is just for NES roms.

what exactly is the game called.
surely, with the advancement of 3D computer graphics, someone can definitely write a good looking badminton game that will take advantage of the 3D aspect of badminton..
Look at the scoreboard! Japan vs USA?! And USA in the lead!
Is there online scoring for this match, Kwun? ;)

Hi,
Its such a shame that there are no badminton games out there. I mean, EA can produce top quality real life tennis games on the playstation etc, so why not use the angle at which the tennis games are done at and turn it into a badminton game? I feel it would be a right good seller over here. They have the capablity to do it, but once again lack of knowledge, funding and promotion of badminton??

i agree, vitua tennis is one of my favourite games right now, it's just like playing tennis... however, for badminton, if they did make it realisitic, I would think that once someone lifted, it would almost be over.... at 300 km/h the defending player has a 50/50 chance of getting it back.... that's the problem with ALL sports games, all the players always hit excellent shots.... for example, in the NES version of badminton, the smashes are ALWAYS at the sidelines (assuming you aimed there)
Matt Ross

Hi,
I just feel that with the technological advances in games, making a badminton game should be no problem. I love virtua tennis on the reamcast, it's a great game because you have all the training and different levels. So if they can do this for tennis, why not use the same camera angles etc for badminton? It should be no problem.
Matt
Nanashi
06-19-2002, 10:07 PM
well, for one thing, tennis, the ball rarely goes very high, unlike badminton.... so with that camera angle, it'd be difficult to know if it was a smash or a clear.... then to compensate, they'd have to change camera angles specifically for the player receiving, which would screw over multiplayer... the only way i see this working is if it's split screen...

firstly I would like to make a few points
EA does not have a lack of funding in any way shape or form as they are one of the biggest companies in the world. (also have the most expensive share in australia at around $150 each)
And do you know how easy it would be to make a badminton game running on the engine of one of those tennis games. **** EASY ! as soon as the player detail and interface is changed all the need to modify *other than the images etc* is the physics of the shuttle which would not be that bigga job if you ran it using the engine of some other game.

oh where did u get the screenshot ?
and for the camera angle I think that third person is the way.
Matt Ross

Exactly! So if it's so easy why haven't they made one yet?

Maybe there's been some market research and that discovered a lack of demand for such a product.
guys, trust me. there is a lot of work involved in making a game. especially nowadays when all games are 3d. there are a lot of modelling and art work involved, as well as intelligence (of the computer player) as well as knowledge and research into the nature of the game itself. not just "chaning the images"... a big game company takes a year or two to create a 3D game (sometimes more than that!) involving huge budget. unless if they know that they are going to get some revenue from it, unlikely they will pursue working on such a game.
and Nanashi is right, the camera angle is a problem with badminton, which is in nature very 3D and tennis is much more 2D. the game developer will be facing the same problem as the cameramen/producer for TV broadcast. although the developer will have a much more flexible "camera" than the cameramen.

Matt, did you read my first paragraph, towards the end?
company is partly driven by technology, and partly driven by economics. if they can't see how they can make money out of it, it will be stupid of them to spend money and resources on it. development, and human being costs a lot of money to maintain.

It is amazingly hard to make a game from scratch but if you use the engine of a game it make everything easier.
They (EA) are not making the games due to lack of funds...
OR because it is to hard to make the game....
it is because there is no demand....
why spend money and hours of work on something that you know is not going to sell well because in the world of buisness it all comes down to money so what I am saying is that they would'nt bother. The only way I really see something happening is that a group of game programmers who loved badminton would make it but not EA.

I LOVE THAT GAME!!!!
i have a rom of it but the right side of the court is all screwed up visually.. :(
the physics are awsome tho you can do every shot! its really fun but hard to play
if someone made a real 3d badminton game it would be so awsome
make it so you have to train and get good at timing each of the shots or else they will suck..
the physics would be the hardest thing to do..

I have a great Idea.. I think we should start some kind of online petition that and we can write to companies with the petition and they might see that there is really demand out there. If you just say to them that you would buy it if it was there it would encourage them (who over they are) to make a badminton game.

all the members combined together couldn't put a petition worth looking at.... each signarture on a petition is usually looked at as 100 people... so 700 sumthing times 100 is 70000.... not worth looking at, when people want games to sell millions of copies...
I had the NES Badminton game on my computer before on an emulator. I loved hitting a right drop/net shot, and then the computer would lift it really weakly and it would be jump smash at the net time! :D The Chinese player would always smash to the sides really good though, so it was no fun playing him.

Hi,
I'm sure there was a badminton game on this olympics game for the Mega Drive. The olympic game consisted of diving, swimming etc, and was wondering if anyone else remembers it?
Matt
I totally agree with wedgewenis point of view, there are some serious gamers in Asia, and most importantly, they are not price driven kindda person, since they can easily get a copy for like US $3 bucks? The point is like so many of you already mention, there is no such demand even there is, company will not make any profit out of it since Aisa countries are so good in this clone thing. Although I sure will buy a original copy since I luv this sport so much. Sigh... if I got the money and all the resources that EA has, I definitly will develop a 3D badminton game for personal sake :)

Joseph
09-30-2002, 07:26 PM
unfortunately, i dont know the name of the game. it's been about a year or so since i did my last search on the game. all i remember from my last search was that it said badminton for ps2. i told my friends about it and they said that they sold the game on this one website which is now down. i think it was called gamecave. it was either quan or my other friend who told me. i cant find any reviews on it though :( so it's probably just a made up game of some sort...
can't offer much help, i did try to do the search, but came out with little other than this review of the track and field game, this is from what the reviewer says, looks like this guy actually has a clue.
http://sony.gamerweb.com/reviews/ps2/espnitandf.asp
"Most of these events have been done time and time again in other track and field games, and not just Konami's. Only a few events are remotely original, and those include the rhythmic gymnastics, trap shooting, and weight lifting. No entirely original events are included, though. I'm still waiting for some company to really dip into the Summer Olympics sports list... getting to things like badminton. "
i was playing another game, one of the tennis game in the playstation a few weeks ago in my friend's place. we played doubles mostly. it was a fun game, and surprisingly, it felt a little bit like badminton due to the doubles nature of the game. however, it was slow, slow just like tennis and i think a badminton version will have to be faster but that would make it less playable. the amount of shots is ok, there are drives, block, volley and lob. and the controls aren't too bad, one can do pretty good control for directions and stuff. but still badminton is much more complicated than that.

Because distribution + marketing costs more than actual production. That's why alot games and other products are made but never sold. Because they market isn't there by the time it's finnished. We may love a badminton game, but I think the typical computer game reviewer would hardly be impressed.

The petition to bring back Undergrads (awsome show) is over 100,000 already, but MTV still refuses to pay for another season. Same with Family Guy, which has around 300,000 signatures I think?
I doubt EA will be impressed by 7000. Try 700,000. It costs 2-10 times more to make a video games these days than a TV show.

For the cost of developing a serious 3D game (several million US) you can create a huge 24x7 badminton facility, and keep it running for a long time. You could definetly promote a lot of badminton with that kind of cash.
Just did a check for playstation 2 sports title in Japan. They have weird stuff there and as for racquet sports, they have about 10 titles for tennis and one title for SQUASH!! C'mon if you make a game for squash, you gotta give badminton a try. :(

"s" is your select or start button
"d" is for the jump
"f" is to hit
Arrow keys for movement
there is an option to change the keys though

Just watch out for where the bird is gonna land, get there, hold down "F" (or A Button in NES), and it'll hit it back.
For Canada, serve, or return a serve, then run to the middle line.
All you have to do then, is go left or right, then hold down A :)
U could smash when the time is right too.
LOL!!! The only player that I could match was the Canadian!! I streched him to three games before finally bowing out in set match. I won first game 15-3, lost second 15-8, and lost in set 5-0 in third:( . That Chinese guy is impossible to even score a point on as he jump smashes half of the shots that he gets:eek: !! Somehow, I can only play well from the left side of the the screen.
The strategy to beat the Canadian:
Serve and just keep using jump smashes in combination with clears; he will miss on usually the 3rd or 4th jump smash.
GGz.

"Shuttle": seems can never hit the shuttle when using "upper half" (sweet spot and aove) of the racket. Hitting with shaft is a safer choice than "tiptap"... :(
"Keep it up": a lot of times, shuttle lands on feather, and bouncing higher when hitting feather than cork, heehheheh... :D

That shuttle game got me thinking... creating a quake III mod that changes the guns into different badminton racquets and chaning the character animations to be more badminton related should require very little work.... maybe a month or so for a couple of people. Since skinning the racquets would be pretty easy (a few days) and we only need to add a few animations (lounge, smash, hit, etc.) If quake 3 is as moddable as I hope it will be, changing the AI to play badminton should be possible too...
any takers?

I made those games at BVHouten.nl
The reason why the shuttle is bouncing higher when hitting feather, is because I've used the physics of a bouncing ball.
I'm not an experienced flash programmer, so it's very hard to implement the right physics for the shuttle in this game.
If anyone have experience with this problem, and know how to implement the right physics in this game, please contact!
Also, if you have a good idea of an online badminton game, please let me know.

Where did you get this? I was staying at a friends place for the Thomas & Uber Cups in Guangzhou and they had this game - play one or twice, but controls were very difficult.

For those who are interested in getting a badminton game for their PC you can try this company, based in Japan. Looks like the graphics are okay and at least you're looking from the players view and not side on. It's only 1280yen which shouldn't break the bank, and you can order it online using a credit card. Here's the link.....

It looks weak by modern gaming standards, but looks better still compared to the old NES game. BTW, how's everybody doing on that game? I've been able to beat the Canadian, American and Brit. I came close against the Korean but was outclassed by the Chinese.

Hey guys,
I finally managed to beat the chinese guy, I had to do lots of jump crosscourt drops followed by jump crosscourt smashes to the other side to get points off him
Also, when I used drive serves I found he didnt jump smash as much
The game is actually pretty fun, even for an NES game!!
I must revive this thread as I have great news to share to everybody: about 5 minutes ago, I defeated the Chinese player 15-0 in the NES game!! The main weapon to use against him is a combo of drops and then clears to make him put up a shorty for the easy kill.
This game really satiates my badminton hunger when I'm off the court. Now, if only I can play in real life as good as I can in the video game!:p

which court did you play on? i found that the court 4 chinese player was the toughest opponent, it took me awhile to beat him after beating the court 1 chinese guy.

I did the "goose-egging" on courts 3 and 4 but have not done it yet on courts 1 and 2. For some reason, I find those to be more difficult to play. It could be the background color that distracts me or the fact that my own shuttler and the opponent can get "camouflaged" (especially on court 1).
But it's so addicting that I have to get my share of it every day!!

I've always wondered what a badminton game would be like, it would be brilliant if one were to ever come out that matches the current sports games available. Although it's been said earlier here, it is remarkable how much more advanced the games have become in the last decade.
Ideally if it was a reality, you would be able to play as any of the world-ranked players (real names, not made-up) in all of the international tournaments (Grand Prix and A,B ranked satellites). Also the stadiums should be real (Senayan, KL Badminton stadium, NIA, Queen Elizabeth stadium etc.). Major tournaments such as Thomas/Uber/Sudirman Cups, World Champs and Olympics (?) would be in there as well.
I suppose I've just turned this into an extended wish list, but given how good other sports games are these days, it doesn't seem that unrealistic. It's a shame that there isn't seen to be a market for this.
Jono
If EA Sports ever makes a badminton game, I would buy it the day it comes out!!! Of course, we just have to convince them that their major target sales zone is not the North American market but rather mainly Asia and parts of Europe!! :D
If there are already curling and dart-throwing "sport" games out on the market, I think a decent badminton game should not be inplausible.

virtua tennis 2...but with real licence and badminton:)
that would be good....although probably a bit too arcardy for die-hards
Hmm.....i guess even if EA knows tat there r so much badminton fans out here.. They noe tat most badminton fans r from Asia.. and.... where does those pritated games from????haha..... most probaly they noe tat there will be pirated games then.......and.....there is not really much badminton fans in the euro....
As for tennis...it is so popular in Euro...so isn't a problem for the market then...

To summarize, which Badminton Games are available - I would like to put in a short List:
1. Super Dynamix Badminton NES (also available as Super Naked Badminton - lol)
The best Badminton game that I know. It was released on the NES and is years old.
2. Badminton
This game is for Interton Electronic Video 2000 (It's just a variant of Pong).
3. FB's Badminton Version 1.0
It's a Badminton Game for PC - but I would not buy it! It has lots of bugs within and it's no fun to play compared with the NES-Version (there are only rackets - and no players in the game).
There's a screenshot attached.
4. "Ping-Pong - Tennis - Badminton" or "Value Ping-Pong - Tennis Badminton" from MAGNOLIA
(This seems to be a professional release - but where to get it or at least a screenshot  ???)
5. Panda Badminton
A Flash Game.
Feel free to add something you own or you have seen...

I enjoy playing sports video games, especially games of sports that I enjoy in real life. But I don't think anyone has yet made a badminton video game.
Imagine, you can choose to play as a famous player, each with their own unique powers (ie. Taufik with extra technique points, Lin Dan with extra smashing power and speed, etc.). You can even choose to play as badminton legends (ie. Zhao Jian Hua, with extra deception), which is sort of like how you can play as vintage Brazilian teams in the FIFA teams. You can use the mouse to aim and use different buttons for clears, smashes, drops. You can add deception by using certain button combinations. You can leap into the air using the space button and move around with WSAD or the arrow keys.
For example, you can press one key to move your arm in position to do a straight net shot, but then delay it, and press another button to flick it to the back of the court. Of course, doing so will increase the chances that you'll mishit the bird.
You can even start a "career" mode, where you start off as a lowly club player. You can play at local tournaments at highschool gyms to gain skill points and win money. You can add skill points to various attributes, like "backhand deception", "anticipation", "movement", etc. Once you win enough tournaments, you can proceed to compete at national and international level tournaments, and on Taraflex mats in better facilities. The money you win can even be used to buy your own rackets and shoes from virtual Yonex pro shops. You can specify your racket weight, grip size, grip tape, string, string tension, etc. They'll all affect your game.
Imagine how fun that'd be!

it might be difficult for programmers to make a realistic one with good playability. the shuttle cock is just a bit too fast for game players if it's in actural speed. of coz those experts can slow it down for better playability. but IMO less realistic less fun!

it might be difficult for programmers to make a realistic one with good playability. the shuttle cock is just a bit too fast for game players if it's in actural speed. of coz those experts can slow it down for better playability. but IMO less realistic less fun!
They have made many tennis games which have been quite successful (eg. Virtua Tennis, even Mario Tennis). Certainly there is a good way to implement badminton into a video game form.
I don't think a badminton game would be so popular in North America for the same reason it isn't broadcasted on TV. I do hope it will be popular enough some day that maybe EA will pick it up :p. One can always dream.

Something a lot of people have waited for (since the appearance of Nintendo's game) ...:
Actually - there is the first Badminton Game online. It is hosted by the NBV (Germany). It is quite funny - and there are a lot of prices to win.

Do anyone know any pc game in the market???

01-25-2006, 01:21 AM
Probably not yet, as it will be very difficult to make/control the player's movements on courts. Badminton has too many variations in terms of movements :)
Unless some major company really willing to spend a bunch on development and with putting up pro's faces, I think it will be hard to make it a good selling game.

Modelling the dynamics of the shuttle isn't as simple as tennis balls too :)
And like you said: too many variations :)
more so, how about camera angles? <= here's a hard one :)

I heard that the GTA producers are going to bring out a wonderfull ping-pong game, if they had made a badminton game, it would be in short time a very famous sport !!! Link: http://www.computerbase.de/news/software/spiele/2006/maerz/neues_spiel_grand_theft_auto-entwickler/

i'm not a programmer but overall it is very enticing graphic.
As a suggestion, i find 'upbeat badminton' and '2005 anaheim' court rotation too fast. I like it better at rotational speed in 'malaysia boleh' and 'single badmiinton'.

You should go a quest to make the ultimate rackets. Different players in different parts of the world have certain peices of it... haha so archetypical
This might be a big step in badminton entertainment for badminton addicts and badminton gamers.
Heard from a reliable source that EA Sports. A leading videogame company is working on Badminton. I don't know which players they will use or the game will be out. It is still in testing.
Imagine using characters like LeeChongWei, Zhang Ning etc..
Its like playing Fifa2006, or Tigerwood, NBAlive etc..
