Haha, I did recognize your extremely thorough efforts. I do think keeping track of upset matches are important, for example it's great for spotting rising stars. I guess my point was that there's always rank uncertainty. I wouldn't consider #10 beating #9 a true upset, even though technically the result is "not expected" on paper.

The question in the mind of many Malaysians is what is next for KKK/TBH? I recall Rexy made such statement as spliting this pair if they don't perform well in China Open. Personally I think it's in-evitable to split them up as these two players are still young and still capable of playing high level badminton. The question is will Rexy have enough gut to actually pull the trigger? I know the players have threatened to retire if they are force to split but I think they will hang around ...
I think Rexy will have to make this tough decision before the end of the year.

Really... I assume Zhang Dan is the same one who used to be Zhang Yawen's partner. They were rising stars, before Zhang Dan disappeared due to injuries, I think. Wish her the best!
Actually with Zhang Dan's experience, I won't really calling this one an upset.
ye333 09-25-2008, 12:51 PM It's still an upset if you taking into consideration that Zhang Dan is training in Macau (suppose this is the case), where the training resource (both material and human -- say sparring partners) is not comparable to that of Team China. We all see how CH got worse and worse after leaving the national team.

yes.indeed zhang/zhang are fr china but representing macau. it is always hard to beat china pair no matter which country they represent. in fact, i knw that it will be a hard match for wpt/ceh after zang/zang beat pan pan yesterday.

I agree. However, I think experience and mental strength counts a lot more in doubles. Look Tony G, I am sure the resource in US should be like none when compare to INA MD teams. ;)

I would say Tony is one of the greatest of all time, if not the best... but I strongly suggest not to violate the 1st commandment though, even if you are not religious. I do understand you don't mean it seriously, but yeah... I hope you know what I mean.;)

i have no doubt he is one of the better players from INA but to put him inline with GOD is a bit too much.
there are much more good players to mentioned
ng boon bee / tan yee khan / punch gunalan
tjun tjun / christian hadinata
park joo bong / kim moon soo
rexy / ricky
li yong bo / tian bing yi
razif / jailani
i still remember 1985 jvc open in stadium negara park /kim vs razif/ jailani. It is one ofthe perfect game with near zero unforced errors. superbly WORLD CLASS.
Tony Gunawan is still biting his pacifier admiring what is badminton, i reckon.

hmm...as u see...i doing this base on wr...mean that...wr will consider if that match is upset or not...my policy is: any lower rank player beat a higher rank opponent, that consider as upset...;)
because...the standard of upset is differ from all bc member here...maybe some will think wyh beat tr is not upset...but some think yes...and many many more...so,this is hard to torelate with all bc member...setting a guide line is a good solution for this...;)
well....everyone can sound out his/her opinion...if the majority think that this is not the best guide line,we can discuss and find the solution...:)
wr shows ur best result for one year...no excuse like compete in lesser tournament should be used...looks at lin dan ranking point...now...he have more semi finalist than lcw...and lcw have more finalist than lin dan...SO...IF LIN DAN was well performed(just blame lyb lah),then,he should have AT THE NO.1 spot...lcw cant takeover...hmm...so,if anyone disagree...pls tell me...:D
extremenanopowe 09-27-2008, 06:24 AM A good final is on the cards. Well done Sony... ;) Play that funky music... hehe..

goldenbear 09-27-2008, 01:09 PM Like a lot of ex-CHN players, many left the country to pursue better opportunity because of the corruption in the sports bureau, namely the pingpong/badminton association in China. Zhang Dan had personal grudge against Li Yongbo and was "let go". There are MANY MANY great ex-national players that got sent back to the province teams because of disagreement with the management. It's a very shady/dark situation - you have some very untalented players who come from a somewhat influential or even affluent family and they get to be the center of training focus no matter how poor of results they deliver.

yes it would because it would surely upset him:D:p
..i would imagine the next time LD plays LCW and if LD beats LCW, all the headlines will read "LinDan, world no. 2 (maybe even lower) has upset LCW to win (such and such tournament)"....:);)
george@chongwei 09-29-2008, 02:10 AM thank u very much limsy for counting all the upsets:p:p:D

since lcw got the #1 ranking and datukship with boleh fans jumping up & down with glee, lcw failed his #1 expectation at JO, he failed(to show up) at CM. Too much pressure i'd say.:p LD says 'u can have my #1 ranking as my token gift to u' since i can beat u all even in an unseeded position:p My new pressure now is from doing interviews with various international sponsors, and from hot chicks fidgeting my hairs and adjusting my shirt and pants(for photo shoots):p
george@chongwei 09-29-2008, 02:32 AM btw, when did he failed at China Maters???:(
he didnt played in that tournament also, how did he fail?:eek:
or are u trying to tell that lcw doesnt participate in that tournament is consider a failure for him?:confused:

i saw lcw name in the CM's MS ladder, it was a walkover win by yu li.
ok, lcw didnt play CM, it was a very last minute withdrawal, as good as saying i give up.http://www.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/draw.aspx?id=24230&draw=1

1) Nope, most probably, it would read, "LD, the 2008 Gold medalist has beaten so & so.........." As you know, that's how they would introduce the players until 2012 when the new winner is crowned.
BUT if LCW fail to beat LD or worse CJ, Bao, as when he's WR#1, there'll will headlines as to his failure to maintain his #1 position - WC 2006 example. That would be how it'll come out the Msian media anyway ;)
2) Hmmmm, in counting of upsets, best to go by ranking, cos there'll loads of different opinions from BCers as to whether it's an upset or so. Then there'll debates back & forth, never ending ;):D
Unless : player seeded no 6 beat seed no 4, lets say BUT in the latest BWF ranking seed no 6 is WR#12 but seed no 4 is WR#14. Seed no 4 has a lower WR than seed no 6 due to non participation, losing early rounds, or Seed no 6 having won consecutive titles (like Sony).
This type of scenario has happened bf, but mostly with players/pairs who're close to each other in the rankings.
Then, personally, I would follow the WR, as the seedings are done earlier.
Sounds complicated eh? :p

;)..both in media (LD as OG & WC champ winning over wr #1) and in BC (LD, lower world ranking upsetting wr #1). And you've covered it well.

Wow, isnt it late over at your place?? :p:p.
Nahh, if we start to "count upsets" then one will encounter some of the scenarios i posted. If not go by WR, instead of counting match upsets there'll be BC members arguing, getting upset & locked threads, LOL. ;)
And.......added to that the 'upset" of not getting to watch baddy live, which looks to happen in Macau Open.
ctjcad 09-29-2008, 04:39 AM ...i thought that's limsy's pre-requisite for an upset??(thus i brought up that scenario, LD vs. LCW).. ;)
*yeah, it's getting late to doze off, but the day is just starting or soon to be..;)
limsy 09-29-2008, 06:31 AM HMM....its hard to tolerate with 36k bcer u know???...all of them have differ opinion...so...if anyone can have a better guide line than depend on wr...just sound out...and i will follow...anyone???
if not....wr will be the best solution...
