View Full Version : Better having 2 different rackets or 2 similar rackets?
If i have a heavy racket like Ti 10 or MP 100 and got used to it, then wanna buy a second racket.
1......Is it then better to choose one that has the silimar style and performance so when I switch between the two I won't have to get accustomed to it first ....or
2......go for a light one so I have various type of rackets that I could choose for different type of match or strategy ?
Some comment please, thank you !
two words - personal preference. And I think you already answer yourself.
1....if you have difficulty switching between racquets, get the similar one. Plus, different kind of racquet doesnt really suit you if you are not used to it, eventually you will hate the racquet and throw it aside.
2....if different type of racquets really influence different kind of matches of yours, then go for different type of racquet (as i know, most people use one racquet for every kind of games, and it doesnt seem to bother them that much)
Matt Ross 06-19-2002, 04:07 PM Hi,
Well, as Nic said it is up to you. I have 3 different Carltons and i play alot of open tournaments, which to me i feel is a bad idea. If you think about it, say i play in a tournament and the strings on my best racket go. It means i now have to carry on the game with a total differnt racket, which could be say 10g heavier and you lose the game because of it.
Now say you had 3 of the same favourite racket. The strings go and then you can switch over and if will be like playing with the same racket. This is my personal view, but it's up to you.
Matt
Nanashi 06-19-2002, 05:06 PM i use the same one racquet for all my matches. I have others, but I always use the one i currently use. It's quite heavy (or at least everyone who picks it up thinks so... i don't..) and i use it for singles and doubles... some people tell me to get a lighter racquet for singles.. but i find that i'm so used to my current one, that it doesn't feel the least bit heavy...
TDotSmAsHer 06-19-2002, 05:17 PM nanashi, what racquet do u use?
Matt Ross 06-19-2002, 05:44 PM I can't stand heavy rackets!
adelina76 06-19-2002, 06:27 PM Hi Voda, whether or not to have two different weight racquets in my humble opinion depends on:
1) How many disciplines do you play in and what level are you at in playing badminton - If you only normally play just one discipline, e.g mens singles (particularly so with professional players), then it is perhaps better to stick to just one type of racquet. You see, that's because most of the time, people will have two different types of racquets based on different weights and manouevrability in order to compliment both the singles and doubles game. For example, a heavier weight in the head of the racquet and a stiffer racquet will give you better smashing abilities in your doubles game but you may want a lighter head racquet for your singles game.
Also, whether or not to have two different types of racquets depends on the level of your ability, i.e beginner or intermediate or professional. Obviously, if you are pro and is concentrating only on one discipline, then perhaps stick to one type of racquet. Same goes for if you are a beginner and you just want to have a hit and not too worry about the performance of your racquet..stick to one. However, if you're somewhere in between..i.e intermediate level and you're not focussing on one particular discipline, perhaps you might want to look at having one racquet for singles and one for doubles
2) As Nic have pointed out, you need to look at how quickly you can adapt to changing and getting accustomed to another racquet - i.e if you find that it doesn't take you that long a time to be able to use two different racquets, perhaps it might pay to have 2 different types to enhance your singles and doubles games respectively. Again, if you find changing between 2 different types of racquets too much of a hassle and often you can't adapt to the quick change, then perhaps, stick to one :)
Anyhow, whichever way you go..why don't you try using 2 different racquets during practices and social games and see whether it makes any difference to your singles and doubles game. If not, why bother? Stick to what you know best..what's the gospel saying that you men prescribe to, "if it ain't broken, why fix it?" :P
Good Luck..
Just my 2 cents worth..

Matt Ross 06-19-2002, 07:57 PM Well said!
if i were you i'd have something like 2 different models, irregardless of the quantity of each in my bag... but make sure you like them both!
when this happens, tendency is that you'll like one better than the other... then you'll sort of discard the other one. Then when you find yourself playing on a bad day, you switch to the other one and for me, it work wonders!
then for the few weeks to come i will use the 2nd one more often than the 1st one... well, until a bad day comes again =D
i know there is absolutely no scientific basis for this, but i guess it's just psychology!

believe it or not, (nanashi's believe it or not, lol...) i use a racquet made by the club i play at....
but it's basically a hi-qua clone... (forgot the exact model name of the hi-qua racquet..)
haha Nanashi,
the racquet made by the club is all graphite right?....
so it's not really heavy....:p
Thanks so much to all for such valuable advice !

well, there IS titanium PAINTED on... lol....
well... every person who's picked up my racquet has immediately told me that it weighs a ton.... but, maybe cuz i've used it for a while, i can use it for hours on end without making my arm tired (compared to "lighter" racquets..)
