View Full Version : Poor fitting shoes... Anything I can do?

I asked my brother to pick up a pair of Mizuno Wave Gate 3 when he went to Hong Kong. At the store, only wide size was available (and the sales person told him wide size would be more comfortable) so he bought that.
But it's -too- wide. It's okay if I wear thick socks and tie the shoe laces really tight but there is still a lot of space in the toe box area that make the shoes kind of dig into my toes with a sharp fold when I bend them.
Anything I can do to make them more comfortable? Maybe add another layer of insole?
My old shoes is a pair of Yonex SHB-99M that I bought years ago. It's half a size too long but that doesn't pose much problem. It still has plenty of threads but I stopped wearing it because:
the power cushion is completely dead and flat
I've managed to wear a hole through the power cushion at the ball of my right feet
it has zero arch support and causes my feet to hurt after running and physical training drills and
because it... smells bad (left a pair of sweaty socks in the shoes one time, and left the shoes inside a plastic bag for almost a whole week. Yuck.)Is it possible to get replacement power cushions? Get anything to add arch support?
Don't really feel like spending $$$ for another pair of shoes and letting these two pairs go to waste...

This is why I usually don't recommend getting shoes without actually trying the pair you are buying. They're hand made so there's variations even for a given model. I've personally experienced this.
Thicker socks and thicker insoles can only help so much. Try it, it's not much to.
For your old 100, try washing it. Use clothes detergent. You can also try scrubbing it with a bit of water and baking soda. The insoles are replaceable. If you need more arch support, try Superfeet. That's the type my sports physiotherapist recommended after I got an ankle injury and also the type that a lot of people here recommend.
For the future, to minimize stinkiness, try using a cotton shoe bag instead. I bought 3 cheap drawstring ones that I wash after each session. You might be surprised how damp the cotton bag gets!

For the new shoes that are too wide.....get rid of them. Sell them while they're still fresh. All they can give you is blisters and calluses.
For the shoes that are too long.....your arch might be sore because your foot's arch and the shoe's arch support are not in the same place.
Take care of your feet. You only got two. We are hard enough on them already that we don't need to find new ways to torture them.:)

If the shoes doesn't fit you perfect i recommend you don't where it since improper fitting of the shoe can lead to injuries.

...Know what Canadian stores sell Superfeet? Washing my SHB-99M + new insole seems like the best course of action.
And where do you get cotton shoe bags? I don't think I've... SEEN them before, sounds like an awesome idea.

I think it's too late, there are fold marks everywhere and the insole has my foot print already.

If I can't get either pair to fit decently enough... I'll buy a pair of the cheapest badminton Mizuno has to offer... In person! Or maybe give those Apacs $45 shoes a try...

Mountain Equipment Coop sells Superfeet Orange here. I've had two crack at the hard plastic part in 3 months though. I'm back to the green ones. In Vancouver, any of the stores from the same company Sportmart/Sportchek/Coast Mountain usually carry these. Most sporting footwear stores here sell them too.
The cotton drawstring bags I got were not marketed as shoe bags. I got them for $2 each at Daiso --- a "Japanese" 2-dollar store.
The other thing I do to keep shoes from getting too yucky is to have a separate pair of socks for when I'm on the court and one for pre/post playing. On intense playing days, I bring multiple pairs and change socks about every hour.

25% off (http://subscription.sportchek.ca/resources/friends-and-family-event2/) at Sportchek tomorrow and the day after. I'm going to see if I can pick up a pair of superfeet.
Is there a specific colour I should go for? Orange? Green? Blue?

Nevermind, found a superfeet thread (http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59957&highlight=superfeet&page=2) and got my answer.
