all the best to all mas players in semis!! hope all can win title back...

Exactly what I mean.
MAS coaches see their potential, and keep improving them. Now, MAS is enjoying the yield: dozens of good, young MDs. Some in the making.

However, (this is my silly opinion) INA players are late bloomers. So-so when below their 20s, then rock the world after 20.
AFAIK, Kido/Hendra didn't win any WJC in their junior ages (if I'm not mistaken, they were paired up when they're around 20).
But, look, who is the reigning world MD #1, WC champ, and newly-crowned OG gold medalist?

Agree with you. Most of INA players just improve when they are above 19. Only few players have good below 19 such as Simon Santoso and Taufik Hidayat. There are few of top players of INA ex-WJC champion, I think only Kido in XD pairing with Lilyana if I don't mistake, and Sony and Tommy as finalist of WJC.

I think this year INA has no representative in the final since tomorrow our WD will meet 1st seed from CHN. But, this is a good start from them to compete at international tournament...

As usual, no INA representative in the Finals, but, I am glad to see Saina Nehwal winning the World Junior Championships title this year. She should have won it earlier, but, this year really marks her maturity as a World Class player.

The scarry thing is that she's barely 18 years old and will be one of the contender for World Championships as well as Olympics Gold Medal in London 2012 if she continues her progress

Unfortunately for Saina, she is in the WS category, which is one of the toughest category to crack the Chinese. Even in her age group, there are already Wang Yihan and Wang Lin.

Same for WD.

But it's a good thing to have more challenges to China. India is a big market itself.

I was pleasantly surprised to read that Singapore has captured the WD World Junior crown for the first time in Pune, India! Our best achievement hitherto was when Kendrick Lee was runner up in the MS in 2002.

After all the recent 'sad' news on why our talented juniors Gu Juan and Zhang Beiwen left the SBA because of 'perceived' biased treatment of their singles coach and the reappointment of the 'disgraced' chief coach for want of a better candidate as explained by the SBA, this win is refreshing news for a change.

Singapore’s foreign talents, Fu Mingtian-Yao Lei, unseeded, shocked No 2 seeds Lu Lu-Xia Huan in the semi-finals to prevent another all-China affair in the women’s doubles.

China-born Mingtian and Yao Lei, who came to Singapore when they were around 13 in the same batch as Gu and Zhang, showed greater desire and determination to win the match and were eventually rewarded with a 21-18, 13-21, 21-18 victory.

This unexpected win forced the Singapore team to reschedule their departure on Saturday.

Fu who now trains as a singles player, was only put together with Yao several days before the championships although they had been playing together in the past. Yao's regular partner is Indonesian-born Sari, who might be overage for this championships.

Mingtian-Yao Lei then took on China’s top seeds Xie Jing-Zhong Qianxin in the final. The Chinese had beaten Indonesia’s Aneke Feinya Augustine-Annisa Wahyuni 21-19, 22-20.

Imagine, Singapore is able to produce China-born imported foreign talents to match China's own very best at this level! Really quite eye-catching and satisfying for a badminton fan like me! :)

In the final, Fu and Yao defeated the top seeds Xie and Zhong in a tightly contested match 21-19 and 21-17 and prevented China from taking the WD crown, something they are so accustomed to winnning in the past in both junior and senior WD competitions. It appears that China has won all the Under-19 WD biennial contests since 1992!

Standing on the podium and hearing the national anthem being played for the first time must be a great emotional experience for our two young ladies. ;)

I just hope their departed teammates, Gu and Zhang, will change their minds and rejoin the national squad to give Singapore any chance in world women badminton. :) :D

I still remember that I was sitting with Loh when we watched Saina Nehwal being "thrashed" in the Singapore Open 2006 (forgot who was the opponent though). And now, she's a World Junior Champion.

Shinta Mulia Sari/Yao Lei is increasingly maturing to be a solid pair. I hope Eng Hian is still coaching them as they have a good prospect of becoming at least a top 10-16 pair.

Yes my friend, time has really passed when we were last together. ;)

However, way back in 2006 I knew Saina would be a star someday when I saw her in action during the Melbourne Commonwealth Games. If I'm not mistaken, the present BWF Secretary General, Stuart Borrie, whom I got acquainted with during the Games, was also impressed with Saina.

Oh yes, I've almost forgotten our own Chris, whom I missed the great opportunity of meeting up in Melbourne, must surely be a fan of Saina too!

YONEX SUNRISE-BWF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008

India, Singapore create history

3 November 2008

HOSTS India and Singapore won their first ever gold medals while China’s dominance was dealt a blow when they were restricted to just two gold medals in the Yonex Sunrise-BWF World Junior Championships 2008 in Pune.

http://www.badmintoninternational.net/NewsEditor/Data/866-saina-final.JPG

India’s gold came courtesy of Saina Nehwal who secured a comfortable 21-9, 21-18 win over Japan’s Sakaya Sato, a feat which bettered the Indian’s silver medal feat in the same championships in Incheon two years ago.
The first game was just one way traffic as Saina showed greater composure and power to run away with an easy 21-9 win. However, in the second game, the Japanese left hander suddenly found her rhythm and began to show the form that brought her a win over China’s No 2 seed Lie Xuerui in the second round.
Sakaya turned defense into attack and often caught Saina flatfooted by switching play from left to right.
Despite trailing 9-16, the Japanese caught up to 14-17 and 18-20 before Saina nailed the game with a smash to the joy of some 2,000 fans.

http://www.badmintoninternational.net/NewsEditor/Data/38-bilu.JPG

“I was not able to play in Auckland last year and it was a big disappointment. As such, I was motivated today (Sunday) to give it my all,” said Nehwal.
“She (Sakaya) is a good player but I am just happy to be able to win the title at home in front of all the fans.”
The bronze medals went to China’s Wang Shixian and Thailand’s Porntip Buranaprasertsuk.

While China did not feature in the women’s singles, they were left shocked in the women’s doubles as Singapore’s Fu Mingtian-Yao Lei stunned top seeds Xie Jing-Zhong Qianxin 21-19, 21-17 to give Singapore their first ever World Junior Championships gold medal.
In Auckland last year, Singapore finished third in the mixed team event. However, this year, Singapore finished 12th and Mingtian-Yao Lei’s feat makes up for that disappointment.
Mingtian-Yao Lei, a scratch partnership, showed resolute defence to frustrate the Chinese. It did not help matters for the Chinese that they committed far too many unforced errors which was fully capitalised by the Singaporeans.

China was also frustrated in the men’s doubles when Malaysia’s Mak Hee Chun-Teo Kok Siang lived up to their top billing with a 21-18, 21-14 win over Chai Biao-Qiu Zihan.

http://www.badmintoninternational.net/NewsEditor/Data/616-mas-md-finals.JPG

“We may be the top seeds but we did not put ourselves under any pressure as the target was to reach the final,” said Hee Chun.
“Once we achieved the target, all we wanted to do was to give it our best shot.”
Bronze medals went to Malaysia’s Chooi Kah Ming-Pang Zheng Lin and Korea’s Kim Dae Eun-Kim Ki Eung.

China’s gold medals came through the men’s singles and mixed doubles, which was obvious, as both were an all-China affair.
In the men’s singles, Wang Zhenming beat Gao Huan (21-13, 21-16) for the title while Chair Biao-Xie Jing beat Zhang Nan-Lu Lu (21-19, 21-15).
In the men’s singles, bronze went to R.M.V Gurusaidutt of Idia and Lee Dong Keun of Korea.
In the mixed doubles, Mak He Chun-Vivian Hoo (Malaysia) and Korea’s Kim Ki Jung-Eom Hye Won.
