Well, I think is better that I open a new threat for this...;)
Cat & Kitten are thinking to go (very tempted as Sabah is famous with her beautiful islands), but haven't decide yet. Who else wanna join? The more the merrier......and we'll try to persuade Abang Din to become the coordinator again, haha...!:D
So far, Uncle Loh & Samuel did ask, Abang Din, Pj, spchu, ronnie14 show interest...how about the rest?
We can discuss transportation & accommodation here. Hope there are Sabahan out there to help, hehe! :p

I'm 100% going. This is the best of all BWF tournaments and it's only 3 days duration.I'm just wondering.Should i fly MAS or AirAsia, the airline that gives one lots of time to appreciate the airport when one should already be in the air?
And luyi, i know you're all excited, just calmly start a new thread, don't scare anyone with a new threat.I don't remember any of your threats. How about start a list now?

Wow, it has been 5 years since I last visited Kota Kinabalu.
December 18-21 looks okay to me. Hmm, I might go and conquer Mt Kinabalu again. Hehe...

Not going to happen, I will go, but I am not coordinating, thank you very much ......
Last time I did coordination, had to wait for someone who only arrived at 3 am :p, and had to do multiple long distance ferrying of "Technical Delegates" from Century Park to The Sultan.

Most like the venue will be Likas Indoor Stadium again. Around 5-10 minutes from City Centre.
If that's the case, closest Hotel would be the Likas Square Condo Hotel, within the Likas Square Commercial Complex. However it is more suited for families or groups of up to 6 since you have to take a whole apartment (3 rooms).
So if any of you are willing to take up coordinator work, this might be worth looking. Otherwise there are cheaper options at Api-Api ......

How many stars is the likas Condo hotel? I don't mind sharing.
Is the Stadium far away from Sutera Harbour Resort or are they on opposite sides of the city centre?
I really like KK.The air is relatively unpolluted and the teh tarik even better than KL! The amazing thing is they have this new KL-style shopping mall called One Borneo in the middle of nowhere but clearly targetting tourists cos there are two hotels within the complex.
There is really not much to see but lots to observe. There are so many Filipinos working there,I realise KK is so near to the Phillipines.Lots of KFC.It's like anytime I think of KFC as a source of protein, there'll be one around the corner. The seafood is excellent(and so affordable)and I'm not even a seafood fan. However, most of the tourist activities will be some drive away.
I heard there's one terrific reflexology place where they do it so well the customer fall asleep within the hour. Gee, what a missed opportunity.

Likas is 3 to 4 stars probably. For similar types of accommodation, you'd be better off at Promenade Hotel's sister Resort Condominium at Marina Court. Cheaper and closer to good food and shopping ......
Likas is at opposite ends of Sutera Harbour Resort. Sutera is closer to Airport. Stayed there before and no doubt it is nice, but I don't fancy it because it's quite a distance from the town.
Of course One Borneo is in the middle of nowhere, it's beside the University at Penampang. Goodness knows if the huge thing will ever make enough profit ....

There are 4 flights from Kuching to KK daily on MAS, 2 flights from Air Asia. Air Asia flights are much cheaper but they are only available in the afternoon and night, no morning flights.
If you book now, prices should be around MYR 150 - 200 range, the night flight is cheaper.

Well, I'm not that particular abt accomodation, I'm fine with 3-star hotels and don't mind sharing room/apt. I also plan to climb Mt Kinabalu again (unless there are more interesting events).
I just checked return ticket (including tax) on Air Asia (MYR467) and MAS (MYR1096:eek:).

Louisa had contacted her fren in KK, so she suggested that we stay at Likas Square Condotel, which is 5 - 7 min walking distance to Likas Stadium. It's a apartment suite which can accommodate max 6 person, family style with a living room & 3 bedrooms, free 24 hrs internet... and the best thing is, they are having a promotion right now, ard RM350/6 pax (normal price is RM650). But I think is ok to add bed if needed, or maybe we have enuff person to book 2 apartment.
Besides, this area is 10-15 min driving to KK, so is quite conveniece for us to go down town, hehe...:D Stay in KK town area is not recommended as the taxi fare is very expensive.
We plan to go on 19/12, back 22/12. But we'll wait for all of ur arrival date, as we need to share the accm. Do let us know your date of arrival. We need to ACT FAST coz the promotion may last anytime. Thanks!
Please go http://www.likassquare.com.my (http://www.likassquare.com.my/) for the hotel overview and http://www.likassquare.com.my/blog/ (http://www.likassquare.com.my/blog/) for the promotion.

You fly all the way for the almost free seafood? By the time you cost in the airfare, it's no longer cheap. But you can buy back at the airport and they pack the seafood like professional(it's fascinating to watch but I'm jakun in many things)
so it's still frozen fresh when you reach home.
BTW , I just saw the condotel and it looks like they just refurbished it in anticipation of our arrival.Looks like there's space for mahjong too.

That's because I've lived in KK, long before the Likas Sports Complex was ever built and the whole Api-api - Tanjung Aru area got developed commercially .......:p
And good food not difficult to find.
The trick is, to find good food within walking distance, that would be tough if we stay at Likas ..... though we shouldn't worry so much about cabbie fare since we move as a group.
Wonder if it is worth it to rent a car, MPV perhaps? Hmm .....

Super Series Masters Final - Dec 18-21
Kota Kinabalu: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) Super Series Masters Final that will be held here on Dec 18-21 will offer a total prize money of US$500,000, the biggest the BWF has ever offered.
Sabah Badminton Association (SBA) President, Datuk Maijol Mahap, who is also BAM vice-president, said the sum was the biggest compared to that of Super Series events in other countries which offered prize money of US$250,000.
On Sunday BAM (Badminton Association of Malaysia) secretary P. Ganga Rao told AFP that Sabah would be the host for the finals.
"We are very glad that the BWF and BAM have agreed to our request to host the most prestigious badminton tournament in the world," said Maijol.
"I have been in discussion and consultation with BAMÉSBA's good relationship with BAM made it easier for us to bring the tournament to the State," Maijol added.
On the players participating in the tournament, Maijol said that only the top eight ranked men, women, men's and women's doubles as well as mixed doubles in the Super Series standing will be invited to compete.
"The French Open is currently being held and that will be followed by the last two Super Series - China Open and the Hong Kong Open. At the end of the Super Series circuit, we will know the top eight players in each category. So, you can say that the Super Series Masters Final here, is the final of all the Super Series."
He said that the Malaysian shuttlers likely to compete in the tournament are Datuk Lee Chong Wei (current Men's world number one), Wong Mei Choo (currently fifth in the Women's singles world ranking), Zakry and Fairuz (currently third in the Men's Doubles ranking) as well as the current fourth ranked Women's Doubles Wong Pei Thy and Chin Ei Hui.
"However, all of them have to compete in the China Open and the Hong Kong Open to at least maintain their ranking," he said.
Maijol said that this Nov 18-22, the State will host another world-class event-the Malaysia International Challenge-that will see some 200 shuttlers from 10 countries including India, Chinese Taipei, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Singapore and hosts, Malaysia.
Tickets for the tournament is now available and those interested can contact Tan Chu Chen (012-8158191), Yapp Su Chew (012-8254419) and Ajahar Abd Latif (013-8661616) for further details.

Hi all...I didnt log into BC for so long. Very busy this lately and I didnt know that this super series final will be held in KK, Sabah which is so near to my hometown (Labuan). Not until Samuel informed me. Unfortunately I wont be able to join you all as I'll be away for my year end trip. For those who arrive earlier or leave later than the tournament, I would like to recommend you guys to visit the national park in Kundasang. To enjoy the nice scenery and also the cold weather there. :)

Likas Square Condo Hotel is very near to the stadium but there's nothing much in Likas Square Commercial Complex. Staying around Api-Api area will have more choices of food (especially late night supper) and of course shopping since its in the city area. But only problem is the transportation. Would suggest you guys to rent a car if possible. :)

Jen and my flight details
18 DEC 3K525 ETD 1320 ETA 1550
23 DEC 3K526 ETD 1620 ETA 1850
We're flying JETSTAR and hope there are no flight cancellations cos they fly alternate days.
For accm,Likas may offer nothing but we're gonna be in that area from noon to night anyway;the only free time is morning and supper. In any case,Likas provides shuttle to town centre and One Borneo. The last thing I would go for is a location that's neither here nor there; not walking distance to stadium or to great food places. If we hire a car,Likas shouldn't be a problem. As for shopping, that's taken care of by its shuttle service. There's really nothing much to shop in KK, anyway. Jen and I like the idea of sharing accm during the tournament days but we'll move out of Likas on 22 Dec.
Car hire is a super idea.

Yes,and I just discovered that they have a local office (here) which probably can give a better rate(right now special is USD88++).Will try my luck tomorrow.Cat and kitty are joining us so we have more talk time opportunities.
Sutera has confirmed they are the official hotel.l last saw at least 4 courts, maybe 6 and they looked first class. The marina's lovely to admire since I'm a jakun who's rarely near one;we're getting the seaview! great to be considered a 'regular' although i've been there only once.
The air conditioning's the best I've found in a hotel so far, silent and refreshing.
Food's plenty but average. In the evenings, there's 'live' performance by a wonderful Filipino group.
This beautiful place is rather well maintained and is owned by a Singaporean who loves KK's atmosphere so much he decided to live there.
But most of all,we'll have direct shuttle service to the stadium!

Aiya, feel the pleasure of donating RM20. Every time I book Jetstar, I end up giving them 3-month interest-free loans because they will reschedule. And that gave me the option to explore alternatives in exchange for the interest free loan.

Question 1: Only God knows ..... until now, no info yet.
Question 2: We prefer staying at City Centre, but if you insist, Likas Square is the closest hotel to the venue.

We'll go on 19.12.08 and back 22.12.08. Is up to u whether u wanna follow our plan or plan on ur own. We'll meet with other members either in hotel or stadium, not yet plan.

Option 2: Pay RM1500 for the Season VIP Pass. U'll be provided a FREE dinner together with all the players...

1) Preliminary Round/Group Stage (11 & 12 May/08) ; 08.00-23.00 (3 sessions)
VIP -- IDR.50,000
First Class -- IDR.20,000
2) Quarter Final (13 & 14 May/08) ; 13.00-23.00 (2 sessions)
VIP -- IDR.100,000
First Class -- IDR.50,000
3) Semi Final (15 & 16 May/08) ; 13.00-23.00 (1 session)
VIP -- IDR.100,000
First Class -- IDR.50,000
4) FINAL (17 & 18 May/08) ; 18.00 WIB
VIP -- IDR.150,000
First Class -- IDR.75,000
If attend all the sessions, the price are as below (RM1: Rp2500):
VIP -- RM480
First class -- RM228
So, the SS Final ticket is overprice IMO...or maybe the organizer think that SS Final is more prestige than TC/UC???
ctjcad
12-02-2008, 09:56 AM
..considering KK is somewhat of a tourist town, as they say;), cost/price will be slightly higher since basically tourists will flock in; but still somewhat reasonable esp. if the organizer believe this event is more "prestigious" than a WC or TC & UC or Sudirman Cup.
Does anyone remember/know how much do M'sian Open tickets cost, this yr(per session/whole season)? How about last yr's World Championships in KL (if not mistaken, i remember they were around the same price)??
Another reason could be they (the organizer) are charging extra to cover the commission fee to ticketpro (as do any other events/tourneys).
ctjcad
12-02-2008, 04:35 PM
..i'm comparing the most expensive seats available...
-with this yr's M'sia Open SS (over a 6-days span):
http://www.bam.org.my/tournament/webapps/proton_malaysia_open_2008/upload/ticket_info.jpg
Qualifying round – Free of charge
1st & 2nd rounds – Premium seats - RM25
QF & SF rounds – Premium seats - RM35
Finals – Premium seats - RM45
-with last yr's World Championships in KL (over a 7-days span):
http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44717
1st - 4th rounds - Lower numbered seating - RM38
QF round - Lower numbered seating - RM68
SF & Finals rounds - Lower numbered seating - RM103
The Premium seat's prices in this yr's SS Finale are a bit more pricey than last yr's WC in KL. Call it on KK being a tourist city & this being a more "prestigious" event...:p;)

the ticket was a bit expensive compare to the other tounaments... i never thought that they will separate one day to two session and we actually need two tickets for two different session... btw, why is the night afternoon session more expensive than the morning session?
ctjcad
12-03-2008, 02:36 AM
..a night time session usually generates more people, as working folks, even students will be able to come and watch the matches after work or school. Usually it's a family time.
Higher ticket price + more people = more profit.;)
Although, the last 3 days of this event is going to be held during the weekend; so ideally more people would come even during morning/day session in comparison to a regular weekday.

I've always found that the best view comes from the cheap free seating seats, plus you get the ability to roam.
In the case of Likas Indoor Stadium, best view comes from the White Free Seating Seats, as shown on the seating diagram here (http://www.ticketpro.com.my/data/editor/Image/Yonex%20Sunrise%20SS%20Seating%20Plan%20-%20Website.jpg).

Ticket prices also depend on the general population average purchasing power + inflation + seating capacity + days of competition. So although you are right in the sense that pricing is higher against TC/UC finals or even the World Championships last year, our currency value probably had gone down significantly since then .....both the other competitions last between 7-10 days. Whereas Super Series Finals only get 4 days of competition in an, ahem, more cramped venue ....... :D

I also think that the best view actually was the white colour portion... the only thing tat's different from the numbered seats is that the numbered seats will be nearer to the court, see clearly on the seating plan... the actual stadium have 10 courts, they make it to only 3 for this super series...Since i always go the badminton court at the likas stadium, and i just went yesterday... the stadium wasn't very big actually, so if you actually sit at the upper part also you can see clearly compare to the other bigger stadium... that's what i think so...bt something i have to remind everyone is that the stadium really hot...

Here's the ticket price for TC/UC 2008 in Jakarta, let's do some calculation...:D
1) Preliminary Round/Group Stage (11 & 12 May/08) ; 08.00-23.00 (3 sessions)
VIP -- IDR.50,000
First Class -- IDR.20,000
2) Quarter Final (13 & 14 May/08) ; 13.00-23.00 (2 sessions)
VIP -- IDR.100,000
First Class -- IDR.50,000
3) Semi Final (15 & 16 May/08) ; 13.00-23.00 (1 session)
VIP -- IDR.100,000
First Class -- IDR.50,000
4) FINAL (17 & 18 May/08) ; 18.00 WIB
VIP -- IDR.150,000
First Class -- IDR.75,000
If attend all the sessions, the price are as below (RM1: Rp2500):
VIP -- RM480
First class -- RM228
So, the SS Final ticket is overprice IMO...or maybe the organizer think that SS Final is more prestige than TC/UC???
Shouldn't the SSF be considered more prestigious than TC or WC? It after all sieves out the top players(or at least 80% of the top) to showcase their skills more than their stamina. It means saving time more than money.Money can always be juggled. When ticket price is higher than expected, it just means less money for eating and shopping well.
Consider the extra 'price' as contribution to players' daily allowance.Surely a worthwhile cause.

thanks luyi08, good thinking, i will stay at sutera hotel to meet up with some of the players ...will have breakfast with taufik and lindan together. apart from that i think this super series too commercialize (talking about ticket price.... bit much.)
It looks like the players are staying at Sutera Magellan which is next door.So you may wanna check into Sutera Magellan to be sure of breakfast opportunity with LD and TH unless Magellan guests share the same breakfast restaurant as Sutera Pacific.

You are going to likas stadium from where? If you know where is the outdoor stadium then the likas indoor stadium just opposite the likas outdoor stadium, with red roof and orange colour one... If you are going from sutera harbour that's actually quite near, maybe just 5 minutes or probably less than that.

Everyone bought tickets? Is it all of you guys watch for 4 days? And you guys bought free seating, numbered seating, vip seating or season pass? i think the ticketpro website didn't put out the vip ticket price but just the season pass... I didn't know there's vip seats as i thought vip seats just for the season pass, but that day when i went likas stadium to buy for the ticket the price listing was a bit different from the website, the price was same just that vip tickets is available for every single day or single session... but of course the price is RM20 more expensive than the numbered seats again... the vip seats for final is RM145...

Well, it seems like there is not much info given by any people staying in Sabah. Anyway, the stadium is actually situated right in the middle between, KK and One Borneo. In KK, there is a lot of backpackers lodge that you can stay with affordable price. Staying in Sutera Harbour will be too expensive, unless you are rich.
The is also hotels in One Borneo, such as Tune hotel. You can try that too. For those who wants to rent car, you can try renting it at Kingfisher park, which is one of the nearest housing area near Universiti Malaysia Sabah(which is beside one borneo as well). To get a good rate, preferably if you have someone with student card. Special discount is given to student as that place have businesses catering students.
The taxi in KK is quite expensive because they don't use NGV but petrol. But since Likas Stadium is situated in between both places, it shouldn't be that expensive if you are traveling in groups.

I tried to contact the secretariat, but no one answer the phone. From ticketpro website, can see the number is 012-8307193.
I will contact this guy and ask for more info. Please check the thread for more updates.

Hi abedeng,
The distance from the Likas Sports Centre is hardly 5 miles from the City and if you take a cab from one of the five stars hotels in the City, you will realise that it is only less 10 minutes' ride.
For your information, there is no University of Penampang in Sabah. Perhaps, you are referring to USM (the University Science Malaysia).
Happy holidays.

Ok, I managed to talk to Mr. Yap, and he confirmed that the VIP season pass is not available online.
Those who want to get the VIP season pass have to go down to Likas Stadium to buy.
The dinner with players will be on 17/12/2008, 7pm at Sutera Magellan. Players stay together with us Sutera Pacific:D:D:D

Yes I know, I lived in KK a few years. And I didn't mention the University of Penampang, I meant the University Malaysia Sabah campus. There is no USM there, only UMS.

Hi abedeng,
Thanks for highlighting my mistake. You are right that it should be University Malaysia Sabah.
It is nice to note that you had been staying in KK for a few years in this case you could be a tourist guide for some of the guys who are new to this city.
Happy holidays.

Yaa, but that was a long time ago, when Likas Sports Centre was but a dream.. Although actually the town didn't really change much, other than the commercialization of Api-api and huge resorts lining the coastline. I could still find my way thru, but being a tour guide is too much work .....wakakakaka.

Enjoy yourselves guys. Pls post as many pics, starting from your makan get together. Sorry I can't join you this time. :D

Then it must have been a very long time since you last stayed in KKU.
Let me put this straight that there in no University in Penampang. For your information, 1Borneo is not in Penampang but along Sulaiman Road heading towards the world famous Nexus Resort Karambunai, a beach resort which I believe is something new to you too. Why don't you come and have a first hand knowledge of KKU city? There are a number of changes along the coastlines from Shangrila's Tanjung Aru Resort until the Yayasan Building. Seafoods are cheaper than other cities in Peninsula Malaysia.
If time permits, one should join the local tours to see for oneself the reasons why Sabah is now known as the most attractive tourist state in Malaysia.
Happy holidays.

It has been a long time since I stayed in KK, yes.
But it has not been a long time since I last visited KK.
Therefore yes, I know the Uni is not at Penampang ....
I think I meant to type something else earlier, must be getting old ...... :p or could be the pressure of the job, today my Internet telephony network went haywire and need to do some explaining to the big bosses ....
If you are somewhere near, why not join us? :D

Yup Paul, I need to be amused to relieve some pent up pressure from customers and colleagues alike.. It always amazes me what a delayed building construction could bring forth to the ICT Project Director.

For those who ever visit KK before will be really shock with the changes here... If you're taking MAS Airline you will get to see the new airport... which is really better than the old one... Somemore few fly-overs have been made... There's lots of shopping mall like One-Borneo, City Mall, KK Times Square and lots other which is new... Btw, there's a christmas carnival at jalan gaya from 17-19dec... maybe some of you can have a look there...will have fireworks too... Besides, just one the few days of the badminton tournaments, there's a food and beverage expo at sabah trade centre which very near to likas stadium...you can get lots of food and drinks there...

Hi
Was thinking of getting some tickets to the Finals online but some of my friends said last time they watch any badminton competition in Sabah it was only $20-30 malaysian ringgit, the website says $105 for the free seating, can anyone get a cheaper price, also is Chinese's players not playing?
